Morning news brief: Irish service station devastated in a blast killing three & more

After a truck blast damaged a crucial bridge constructed as Moscow's only land connection to the occupied Crimea, Ukrainian officials made fun of Russia on Saturday without specifically attributing the blame. Russian investigators said three people, the occupants of a car travelling near the truck that blew up, were killed, but did not mention anything about those in the truck.

The Kerch bridge, which President Vladimir Putin personally opened in 2018, is a crucial transportation route for delivering military supplies to Russian troops fighting in Ukraine.

Moscow said that a vehicle had detonated, starting a massive fire that destroyed two automobile lanes of the massive road and rail system and destroyed seven oil tankers being transported by train.

A dramatic video posted on social media shows the bridge on fire and with pieces falling into the water.

Moscow officials promised to track down the criminals but refrained from accusing Kyiv right away, despite the fact that a Crimean official blamed "Ukrainian vandals."

The explosion occurred a day after Putin celebrated his 70th birthday on Friday, and no Ukrainian politician has taken direct responsibility for it.

However, some made jokes about Moscow.

The "Crimean bridge — or more precisely, what remains of it," was shown on the stamps that the Ukrainian Post Office indicated it was getting ready to manufacture.

Boss Igor Smelyansky shared a stamp design for the upcoming issue on Facebook, showing the building being destroyed in an explosion.

The attack was compared by the Ukrainian defence ministry to the one that sunk the Russian ship Moskva in the Black Sea in April, an occasion that has already been commemorated by the issuance of commemorative stamps by the post office.

Crimea bridge partially destroyed after blast; Russian authorities say will be repaired soon

Hong Kong said Friday it will not act on any "unilateral" Western sanctions, after a luxury megayacht linked to one of Russia's wealthiest oligarchs docked in its waters.

The vessel, named Nord, is reportedly tied to billionaire Alexei Mordashov, one of the many oligarchs close to Russian President Vladimir Putin who have been sanctioned by the United States, the European Union and Britain following the invasion of Ukraine.

Authorities in Spain, Italy, France and Fiji have impounded yachts linked to Putin-linked sanctioned oligarchs to try and add pressure on him.

Hong Kong, however, has said it will not take such action after the 142-metre (466-foot) yacht was spotted west of the city by eagle-eyed locals on Thursday.

The Marine Department said it implements United Nations sanctions but not those imposed by individual nations or blocs.

"The Hong Kong government does not implement, nor do we have the legal authority to take action on, unilateral sanctions imposed by other jurisdictions," a spokesperson told AFP on Friday.

The Norwegian Nobel committee has announced the winner of the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize, it was three joint winners - Ales Bialiatski from Belarus, Russia's Memorial group and Ukraine's Center for Civil Liberties.

WION Fineprint: Nobel Peace Prize committee announces three joint members

On Friday, Berit Reiss-Andersen, Chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, announced the winners of the Nobel Peace Prize 2022, which was awarded to one individual and two organisations that “represent civil society in their home countries.” This honour was bestowed upon Ales Bialiatski from Belarus, the Russian human rights organisation Memorial and the Ukrainian human rights organisation Center for Civil Liberties.

“They have for many years promoted the right to criticise power and protect the fundamental rights of citizens. They have made an outstanding effort to document war crimes, human rights abuses and the abuse of power. Together they demonstrate the significance of civil society for peace and democracy,” said the Norwegian Academy.

Belarusian human rights activist: Ales Bialiatski

Reiss-Andersen then went on to address the press about the jailed Belarusian human rights activist Ales Bialiatski. He was one of the initiators of the democracy movement that emerged in Belarus in the mid-1980s and devoted his life to promoting democracy and peaceful development in Belarus, she said.

In 1996, Bialiatski founded the organisation Viasna which means Spring, with time they had evolved into a broad-based human rights organisation. According to the academy, the group has “documented and protested against authorities’ use of torture against political prisoners”.

Notably, his win comes at a time when the country has been facing historic crackdowns, this led to Reiss-Andersen also calling for his release from prison so that he can visit Oslo for the award ceremony that will take place on December 10, later this year.

She added, “Government authorities have repeatedly sought to silence Ales Bialiatski. Since 2020, he is detained without trial.”

However, despite these hardships, Bialiatski has not “yielded an inch in his fight for human rights and democracy” in the ex-Soviet nation, said the academy. This is also not the first time Ales Bialiatski has been arrested, he was once detained for three years between 2011 and 2014 and again in 2020.

Subsequently, in 2021 he was jailed yet again and was charged with tax evasion. According to several critics of the Belarusian government, these charges are a veiled tactic used by the government to silence dissent in the country. Bialiatski has also helped many jailed demonstrators and their families.

The sweeping crackdown has been by the country’s longtime authoritarian leader, Alexander Lukashenko, after huge anti-government demonstrations, last year. This makes Bialiatski the fourth person to receive a Nobel peace prize while in jail or detention, including Liu Xiaobo of China (2010), Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar (1991) and Carl von Ossietzky of Germany (1935).

Russian human rights group: Memorial

One of the two organisations that were given this honour was the Russian human rights group, Memorial. The organisation was founded in 1987 by activists in the former Soviet Union, “who wanted to ensure that the victims of the communist regime’s oppression would never be forgotten,” said Reiss-Andersen. She added that the organisation was based on the notion that, “confronting past crimes is essential in preventing new ones”.

The Russian human rights organisation was dissolved by the Kremlin last year in December, prior to the ongoing invasion of Ukraine. According to reports, they allegedly broke a law which requires certain civil society groups to register as foreign agents. Notably, the founders of the organisation also included a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, a dissent, and physicist, Andrei Sakharov who died in 1989.

Since then the organisation has been at the forefront of “efforts to combat militarism and promote human rights and government based on rule of law,” said the academy. In the early 1990s after the fall of the Soviet Union, an International Memorial was created in the former soviet countries, they reportedly documented political repressions and rehabilitated those repressed under communism. Subsequently, they built a database of victims of Joseph Stalin's (1937-38) Great Terror and Gulag camps.

The academy also cited the Chechen wars when the Memorial “gathered and verified information on abuses and war crimes perpetrated on the population by Russian and pro-Russian forces.” Reiss-Andersen also spoke about Natalia Estemirova, the head of Memorial’s branch in Chechnya, who was killed in 2009 because of this work.

However, they refused to be suppressed and went on to work, till last year’s shutdown reacting to the announcement, the group’s board member Anke Giesen said, “It encourages us in our resolve to support our Russian colleagues to continue their work at a new location, despite the forced dissolution of Memorial International in Moscow.”

‘Advancing human rights and democracy in Ukraine’: The Center for Civil Liberties

Founded in 2007, The Center for Civil Liberties in Ukraine was established for the “purpose of advancing human rights and democracy…It has taken a stand to strengthen Ukrainian civil society and pressure the authorities to make Ukraine a full-fledged democracy,” said the academy.

The centre’s role has been pivotal in holding those accountable for their crimes since the Russian invasion began earlier this year as they are working to “identify and document Russian war crimes against the Ukrainian population.”

What the head of the Nobel committee had to say about the announcement coinciding with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s birthday?

Berit Reiss-Andersen, the head of the Nobel committee went on to say that this prize is “not addressing President Putin not for his birthday, or in any other sense.” Except that his government and the government in Belarus are “representing an authoritarian government that is suppressing human rights activists,” she added. This comes amid the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine and the alleged human rights violations that Moscow has been accused of in relation to this conflict and otherwise.

“The attention that Mr Putin has drawn on himself that is relevant in this context is the way civil society and human rights advocates are being suppressed. And that is what we would like to address with this prize,” said the head of the Nobel committee. Reiss-Andersen also concluded by saying that they give prizes for “something and to somebody and not against anyone.”

United States President Joe Biden said on Thursday that the world is currently facing a major threat of “nuclear Armageddon” and it is currently at its worst since the 1962 Cuban missile crisis. The observation came days after Russia confirmed that they can use nuclear weapons in their ongoing invasion of Ukraine. With Ukraine reclaiming some regions after eight months of war, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that they can use nuclear weapons to claim victory. Ukrainian soldiers shelled a bus in the Russian-controlled area of southern Ukraine's Kherson region on Friday, resulting in at least five fatalities and as many injuries, according to the Russian TASS news agency.

Russian President Vladimir Putin asked the government to take over the operations at the Zaporizhzhia power plant in southern Ukraine. The largest nuclear power plant in Europe has become a major point of focus for both parties in the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“The government will ensure that the nuclear facilities at the plant... are integrated as federal property,” the executive order signed by Putin said according to AFP.

The power plant has been in the middle of a power struggle as the Russian military occupied the facility at the start of the invasion. In the next few months, Ukraine has regained a lot of areas around the nuclear plant, but it is still being operated by Russian forces.

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi said on Wednesday that he will be travelling to the Zaporizhzhia plant in the near future along with a delegation.

Ukraine on Thursday (October 6) said that it had recaptured swathes of territory in southern Kherson region. The counter-offensive has undermined Russia's claim to have annexed the territories. The announcement was made after major Russian bombardment of Zaoporozhzhia. Kyiv said that the bombardment was aimed to "sow fear" among the population

Russia launched Ukraine invasion on February 24 this year. After sustained gains in initial months of the conflict, the Russian forces have had to retreat in the face of Ukrainian counter-offensive.

"The Armed Forces of Ukraine have liberated more than 400 square kilometres of the Kherson region since the beginning of October," Ukrainian southern army command spokeswoman Natalia Gumeniuk said in a briefing online.

Kherson was captured easily by Russians in the early months of war. The region had an estimated pre-war population of around one million people.

Ukrainian forces have in particular made gains on the west bank of the river Dnieper that cuts through Kherson, but the Russian military in a briefing said Thursday that its forces rebuffed "repeated attempts to break through our defences" in the area.

The United States is stockpiling medications for radiation sickness, which might be a worrying sign of the times.

On Wednesday, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced that it would spend $290 million to secure an undisclosed quantity of Amgen's blood disorder drug Nplate, which has been approved to treat blood cell injuries caused by acute radiation syndrome (ARS) in both children and adults.

In a release, HHS stated that ARS, also known as radiation sickness, happens when a person's body is exposed to a high dosage of penetrating radiation that is capable of "hitting interior organs in a matter of seconds." Low platelet counts, which can cause uncontrolled and potentially "life-threatening" blood clotting issues, are symptoms that can result from ARS injuries.

Other than immune thrombocytopenia, which results in low platelet counts, the Amgen medication is licensed for use in children and adults.

Additionally, anti-radiation tablets are apparently being distributed in Ukraine amid rising concerns about a nuclear attack from Russia.

According to NBC News, the Kyiv City Council has been distributing potassium iodine tablets that aid in reducing radiation absorption.

When taken near to nuclear radiation exposure, the pills prevent damaging waves from entering the body through the thyroid gland.

HHS did not elaborate on the reasoning behind the Nplate stock-up, despite the fact that the action coincides with rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine. Russia's President Vladimir Putin has threatened nuclear reprisal and portrayed the dispute as an apocalyptic war between Russia and the West.

Although there is disagreement among experts as to whether Putin is lying, Reuters reported that the White House is taking the warnings seriously. As a result of shelling near the Ukrainian nuclear power facility in Zaporizhzhia, for which Russia and Ukraine trade accusations, neighbouring nations to Ukraine, including Poland, are apparently giving iodine tablets.

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases contributed to the development of the blood disorder medication as well.

BARDA is utilising its authority under the Project Bioshield statute of 2004 for the current agreement, in addition to providing the $290 million in Project Bioshield cash to buy the unknown Nplate supply.
