United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak fired a government aide after he called for a “permanent ceasefire” in Gaza amid the ongoing war after the Palestinian militant group Hamas attacked Israel.

The Conservative Member of Parliament Paul Bristow who served as Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan’s parliamentary private secretary broke ranks in a letter to the PM last week.

What happened?

Last week, Bristow in the letter to Sunak said that a “permanent ceasefire” in Gaza would save lives and allow aid to reach those in need. However, the UK government has previously supported the idea of “humanitarian pauses” but not backed calls for a complete ceasefire.

The now-former government aide also warned against the “collective punishment” of the people of Gaza “for the crimes of Hamas.” Bristow, who is the Conservative MP for Peterborough, is among a few Tory MPs who have called for a ceasefire in Gaza.

The letter reportedly sent on Thursday (Oct 26) said, “My constituents and I are deeply grieved by the heart-breaking and devastating humanitarian crisis now unfolding in Gaza. Thousands have been killed and more than one million now displaced.”

Bristow, in the letter posted on Facebook also said some of his constituents have been “directly affected” by the ongoing war. “It is difficult to understand how this makes Israel more secure or indeed makes anything better,” said the Tory MP.

The UK government along with several other countries in the West have repeatedly said that Israel has a right to defend itself.

Earlier this month, the UK PM also visited Israel and met with his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu and extended support to the country in its “darkest hour” amid its ongoing fight with the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

Sunak has also announced millions of dollars in humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza while addressing the parliament last week.

Former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss in a letter to her successor Rishi Sunak, on Thursday (Oct 26), asked him to "reconsider" his decision to extend an invite to China for the upcoming AI summit.

Truss said that she was "deeply disturbed" to learn that the British government intended to welcome representatives of China who have in the past abused technology for its own gains and have devalued freedom and democracy.

Expressing her disappointment, she took to her official X account and said, "China should not be invited to the UK's AI Summit at Bletchley Park. We should be working with our allies, not those seeking to subvert freedom and democracy. I have written to the Prime Minister requesting that the invitation be rescinded."

She, in the letter, hit out at the Chinese state which she said had used technology to "aid its oppression of millions and attack on freedom and democracy”.

“The regime in Beijing has a fundamentally different attitude to the West about AI, seeing it as a means of state control and a tool for national security,” she warned in the letter shared on X.

She further in the letter stated that the above-mentioned reasons were why the deputy prime minister of the UK in 2020 when he was serving as digital secretary, had removed all Huawei equipment from the UK's 5G networks.

Police in the UK are treating an act of drawing 'Hitler moustache' on the posters of two abducted Israeli children as a hate crime. The children are said to be abducted by Hamas in Israel.

The poster of the two siblings was put up in Camden, northwest London. It shows Emma and Yuli Cunio, both three years old.

It has been reported in British media that the children were kidnapped when Hamas fighters crossed the border into Israel and launched an attack, also kidnapping more than 200 people.

It was observed that Hitler's moustaches were drawn over the children's faces. Another poster, showing a 58-year-old missing lady was defaced.

The posters appeal to passersby to share images of those missing in the hope that this would secure their release.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has already warned that anyone glorifying Hamas terrorists will be dealt with the full force of the law.

“This is what the Jewish community is facing. Not in 1936. In 2023. Here. In London,” wrote journalist Dan Hodges as he posted a photo on social media of the Cunio children’s poster, branding the defacements “evil”.

The Independent has reported that London Metropolitan Police are witnessing a "massive increase" in hate crimes against Jewish members of the society ever since the current war between Israel and Hamas began.

The force has reportedly recorded 105 antisemitic incidents in just two weeks of October. The figure is up from just 14 in the same period last year.

The incidents include intimidation outside synagogues and loudly playing German military music. Jewish people have also been confronted by protesters.

“Police have been made aware of a number of photos that have been posted on social media today of posters which have been defaced in the Finchley Road area," said a police spokesman as quoted by The Independent.

“We fully understand the distress this will cause to local communities. Police are investigating the incident and are treating it as a hate crime.

“Local officers have immediately responded and will be focused on the area to carry out reassurance patrols.”

Britain's Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said on Wednesday (Oct 25) that a British police officer was handed life sentence for manipulating girls aged 10 to 16 into sending explicit images and threatening to share them. Lewis Edwards (24) admitted to 162 child sexual abuse offences. He posed as a teenage boy while talking with these girls on Snapchat app.

Edwards targeted more than 200 girls between 2019 and February this year.

Prosecutors in the case said that some of the victims even begged him to stop but he blackmailed them and demanded more images.

As many as 200 Afghan refugees will fly out of Pakistan, where they are currently stuck, to relocate to the UK onboard the first charter flight scheduled for Thursday (October 26), media reports said.

After the Taliban's takeover of Kabul in August 2021, over 3,000 Afghans, including a majority of those who worked for the British army, were evacuated to Pakistan and promised residence in the European nation.

However, these individuals are still stuck in Pakistan. Apart from Pakistan, hundreds of Afghan refugees are also stranded in Iran as they wait for a possible evacuation to the UK.

This situation has caused concerns among the refugee community in Pakistan. Many of the refugees in Pakistan had initially gone there to process their UK visas, with the aim of starting a new life in the UK.

BBC reported that the sign has been on the postbox for at least four months. It read further, "Whilst you are very welcome to continue using this postbox, we wanted to mention that your letter may not arrive without some nibble marks around the edges." Villagers believe the vegetation on the wall encouraged the snails to conquer the postbox. The snail invasion has existed for at least a year, and the parish council has not discussed it yet. Residents can post their mail at the village post office, as snails have not raided it yet. However, the Lewdown postbox is not the only place these tiny creatures have settled. Residents of Marazion, Cornwall, found their postboxes sealed off to keep these tiny invaders out. The postbox survived without any issue for over a century, surviving even two World Wars and the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the authorities had to shut it down as it became impossible for the staff to retrieve mail from it. ALSO READ | Artemis II Orion crew, service modules joined together as NASA's moon mission set to launch next year However, the 'snail mail' is a decade-old issue in England. In 2001, the slimy creatures crawled up postboxes in piles of letters all over England. The officer in charge, Tom Potts, told The Guardian, "We were finding 20, even 30 snails at a time in the bottom of boxes. It wasn't just ones or twos. They were leaving their slime everywhere, getting into the letters, licking the paste. But they left the stamps alone, respectful of the Queen's image." Snails are herbivores, and they breed rapidly in damp conditions. They eat vegetables, fruits, flowers, and cereals. They also feed on rotting organic material. However, they are fond of glue on envelopes and stamps. According to Country Life, there are over 120 varieties of snails in Britain. However, people mostly notice the common brown snails lurking around in corners. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced Monday that Britain was sending an additional £20 million ($24 million) of aid to help civilians in Gaza affected by the war between Israel and Hamas.

Hamas militants stormed into Israel from the Gaza Strip on October 7, and killed at least 1,400 people, mostly civilians who were shot, mutilated or burnt to death on the first day of the raid, according to Israeli officials.

UK PM Rishi Sunak announces extra £20 million aid for civilians in Gaza

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's old personal phone number has been leaked online, causing concerns about the security and privacy of government officials.

The breach came to light when pranksters on social media shared audio recordings of Sunak's phone ringing and the Prime Minister's message response, Express.co.uk reported.

The leaked phone number has been in use by the UK Prime Minister for many years, even during his tenure as Chancellor and the leadership election that transpired last year.

When Rishi Sunak assumed office as the Prime Minister a year ago, a new phone number was allocated to him. However, the leaked messages reveal that the old number remains operational, posing potential security risks.

Downing Street's response

When approached for comment about the security breach, a Downing Street spokesman refrained from making any statements, stating, "We don't comment on security matters." This response adds an air of mystery to the situation, leaving many to wonder about the extent of the breach's implications.

The leaked phone number has sparked varied reactions, with some considering it a significant security breach and others downplaying its importance. A member of the Tory party on the home affairs committee expressed that while the situation might be inconvenient for the Prime Minister, it might not necessarily qualify as a security breach, as it's possible that many colleagues and friends already had access to the number, not to mention potential hostile intelligence agencies.

WhatsApp messages in question

In an unrelated development, Sunak's testimony to the UK COVID-19 Inquiry revealed that he was unable to provide WhatsApp messages sent from the leaked number. He cited the lack of backups and multiple phone changes over the last three years as the reasons behind his inability to access these messages. This brings up concerns about the preservation and accessibility of government officials' communication records.

The leaking of a UK Prime Minister's phone number is not a novel occurrence. In a similar incident, Prime Minister Boris Johnson was compelled to change his phone number during his tenure after a security breach. Reports from The Guardian indicate that his mobile number had been accessible online for approximately 15 years, emphasising the challenges of safeguarding sensitive contact information for high-ranking officials.

Additionally, the breach of a government official's phone number is not limited to Prime Ministers. Former British Prime Minister Liz Truss experienced a personal phone hack, allegedly orchestrated by agents working for Russian President Vladimir Putin. This breach resulted in unauthorised access to classified information, including top-secret details of international negotiations and private messages. The compromised communications also contained discussions with senior foreign ministers concerning international matters such as the conflict in Ukraine and arms shipments.
