In a tragic turn of events, Indi Gregory, an eight-month-old British girl at the centre of a legal battle over her treatment, passed away within 24 hours of specialists withdrawing life support.

This happened, despite her being granted an Italian citizenship to facilitate her treatment abroad.

A desperate bid for treatment abroad

Indi was diagnosed with mitochondrial disease, a genetic condition that made it hard for her to breathe and also impaired cells in her body from producing energy.

The condition has no cure, due to which a UK court ruled that medics can lawfully limit Indi's treatment.

Her parents, Claire Staniforth and Dean Gregory, however, had sought to transfer her to the Vatican-owned Bambino Gesu hospital in Italy.

The hope was to explore treatment options for mitochondrial disease. However, the UK's National Health Service (NHS) and multiple courts consistently ruled against the transfer, arguing it wasn't in the child's best interests.

Courts reject parental pleas

Even the parents' plea to have Indi's life support removed at home instead of a hospital or hospice was rejected by the Court of Appeal on Friday.

In a statement, as reported by AFP, her parents expressed anger and heartbreak and said: "The NHS and the courts not only took away her chance to live a longer life, but they also took away Indi's dignity to pass away in the family home where she belonged."

Last week, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni granted Indi Italian citizenship, hoping to facilitate her treatment in Italy. Pope Francis too expressed his support, and said that he "prays for them and for her".

However, British courts deemed the intervention from Rome as "wholly misconceived," and blocked her transfer to Italy.

A plane departed from Stansted Airport in London, destined for Florida, with two missing window glasses.

The Airbus A321 jet, previously used by the government, had an unsettling return journey to the Essex airport after a crew member spotted the missing windows while the aircraft was in mid-flight.

The aircraft had reached an altitude of 14,500 feet.

During the flight, all passengers were seated in the middle of the aircraft. After takeoff and the deactivation of the seatbelt sign, a crew member at the rear of the plane noticed that the seal around one of the windows was "flapping".

The mishap was attributed to high-powered lights used during a filming event that took place the day before.

As per a report in The Independent, these lights had been positioned near the aircraft to create a sunrise illusion for the filming. While it was meant to be a controlled operation, it ultimately had serious consequences.

The annual address – known as the King’s or Queen’s Speech – is a centuries-old tradition marking a new parliamentary session. The remarks are prepared by the government and read out by the monarch.

The speech lasted for 10 minutes and covered various important issues like data protection, criminal sentence guidelines, tobacco regulations, and a plan to expand oil and gas extraction in the North Sea.

He then outlined the agenda planned by Sunak for the new parliamentary session at the House of Lords, saying that his ministers would make the “difficult but necessary long-term decisions to change this country for the better".

“The impact of Covid and the war in Ukraine have created significant long-term challenges for the United Kingdom. That is why my government’s priority is to make the difficult but necessary long-term decisions to change this country for the better," King Charles said in prepared remarks.

The British monarch also talked about government initiatives to control inflation, bolster energy security and protect consumers from hidden prices, as he outlined what Sunak hopes will be vote-winning reforms for the Conservatives.
