In a major embarrassment to the UK Royal Navy, a Trident nuclear missile misfired and crashed into the ocean near the submarine that launched it, last month. The test firing was conducted off the coast of Florida and it was the second consecutive time a Trident nuclear missile had failed.

Dozens of lawmakers stormed out of Britain's Parliament during a vote on a ceasefire in Gaza. The uproar followed a decision by the speaker to ignore precedent and allow a crucial vote. The decision helped the opposition Labour party to avoid a largescale rebellion among its own lawmakers over its position on the Israel Hamas War. Lawmakers from the governing conservatives and the opposition Scottish national party left the debating chamber in protest. Watch to know more!

Abu Dhabi's Mubadala Investment is actively considering an investment in London's Heathrow Airport, Reuters reported citing sources familiar with the matter.

The sovereign wealth fund is contemplating this move after being approached by Ardian, a buyout firm based in Paris.

If Mubadala proceeds with the investment, it could join the ranks of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) and Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) as prominent stakeholders in the renowned London hub.

While discussions are currently underway, no formal agreements have been reached, and Mubadala has not finalised its decision on the potential acquisition.

The consideration comes after Spanish infrastructure company Ferrovial SE agreed to sell its 25 per cent stake in Heathrow to Saudi's PIF and Ardian for £2.37 billion (approximately $2.99 billion) in November.

However, an additional 35 per cent of Heathrow's capital, held by other shareholders, invoked tag-along rights, necessitating the sale of their positions for the deal to proceed.

The move aligns with a trend observed in recent years, where Middle Eastern wealth funds actively diversify their portfolios by investing in global infrastructure assets.

Could the UK stop the sale of weapons to Israel over its war in Gaza?

Following a tumultuous and occasionally disorderly parliamentary session regarding Gaza, the Speaker of the House of Commons issued an extraordinary apology.

MPs unanimously supported a Labour motion advocating for an "immediate humanitarian ceasefire" in Gaza. However, this vote came about only after Lindsay Hoyle, the Speaker, broke with established parliamentary tradition to permit the motion to proceed to a vote.

Hoyle's decision sparked outrage among Conservative and Scottish National Party MPs. However, Hoyle asserted that his intention was to facilitate the airing of a diverse range of perspectives.

Calls for action against Speaker amid division

In response to Hoyle's actions, some individuals are advocating for his removal from office, while others urge the Conservatives to challenge him in the upcoming general election.

Despite the controversy, Labour's amendment passed uncontested after Conservative and SNP MPs walked out of the chamber. Labour leader Keir Starmer criticised them for prioritising political manoeuvring over substantive solutions.

At the conclusion of the six-hour debate characterised by parliamentary manoeuvring and partisan accusations, Speaker Hoyle apologised to MPs, acknowledging the suboptimal conduct of the proceedings.

He admitted to reflecting on his role in the discord, expressing regret that the outcome did not align with his intentions.

Also read | US urges UN court to consider Israel’s ‘security needs,’ not order Israel out of West Bank and Gaza

Behind the scenes, Starmer personally lobbied Hoyle to allow the Labour motion to proceed to a vote, fearing a potential rebellion within his own party. Labour MPs had threatened to defy party orders and support an SNP amendment unless Labour presented its own alternative.

The decision to allow both the SNP and Labour amendments stemmed partially from concerns over the safety of MPs who had reportedly faced abuse and threats for their past voting decisions.

Hoyle faced criticism, including from his own clerk, for deviating from established parliamentary norms.

The decision not to participate in the votes by the government, coupled with bitter exchanges in the Commons, underscored the deep divisions surrounding Hoyle's actions.

While some expressed support for Hoyle and accepted his apology, others, particularly from the SNP, remained deeply dissatisfied, viewing the proceedings as disrespectful to their party.

Gaza ceasefire vote: Chaos erupts in UK parliament, Commons speaker apologises

For the first time in more than 140 years, Lyle’s Golden Syrup, a staple in British households, has changed its logo from a dead lion being swarmed by bees to a happier version of the animal with a single bee. The move marks the first rebrand for the company since 1883.

World’s oldest unchanged brand packaging

Lyle’s Golden Syrup, for more than a century now has featured a rather peculiar logo of a lion’s carcass surrounded by bees, for which it also holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s oldest unchanged brand packaging.

It was not until 2006 that the Guinness World Records took note of the product’s unchanged branding aside from the “slight technical changes” which were made during the war due to “shortages of materials”.

In 2008, the company’s then-owner Tate & Lyle announced that it was changing the tin to a gold colour to mark the 125th anniversary of the golden syrup, also known as light treacle.

Notably, the syrup made from refined sugar was first produced by Abram Lyle & Sons in 1881.

“We’re excited to unveil a fresh redesign for the Lyle’s Golden Syrup brand,” said James Whiteley, brand director for Lyle’s Golden Syrup, in a statement.

He added that while they will continue to “honour the original branding”, the “consumers need to see brands moving with the times and meeting their current needs.”

The company plans to continue using the product’s old logo on Lyle’s classic golden syrup tin while the bottles and dessert toppings will have the new branding – an animated version of a lion with a single bee placed slightly above its head.

“Our fresh, contemporary design brings Lyle’s into the modern day, appealing to the everyday British household while still feeling nostalgic and authentically Lyle’s,” said Whiteley.

Story behind the old logo

The origin of the old logo lies in the Old Testament and was based on the idea of the product’s founder and Scottish businessman Abraham Lyle, who decided to include a Christian analogy on the tin.

He then proceeds to present 30 wedding guests with a riddle to solve: “Out of the eater, something to eat; out of the strong, something sweet.”

UK: Chaos in British parliament over Gaza ceasefire vote

The General Medical Council (GMC), the UK's oldest medical regulatory body, is set to issue a formal apology to gay doctors who faced discrimination due to their sexual orientation through the years.

This action follows a report by The Guardian, revealing the GMC's intention to extend apologies to medical practitioners who underwent investigations, sanctions, or practice restrictions under outdated laws criminalising homosexuality.

Long history of discrimination

The GMC conducted 'fitness checks' targeting male doctors between 1899 and 1994 due to their sexual orientation.

An internal investigation has disclosed that 40 male doctors were subjected to these checks, resulting in at least eight of them being permanently removed from the medical register, effectively ending their medical careers.

The GMC's archivist, collaborating with the medical body's LGBTQ+ staff network, unearthed records documenting these discriminatory actions. Shockingly, the last instance of a doctor being barred from practising medicine was as recent as 1996, with some doctors facing scrutiny or warnings even beyond that date.

Charlie Massey, the Chief Executive of the GMC, expressed regret over the organisation's past actions, acknowledging the detrimental impact on the affected doctors' lives and careers, as reported by the Guardian.

Massey stressed the adverse consequences of the GMC's regulatory actions, which were based on homophobic laws prevailing until the 1980s and beyond.

In a forthcoming statement scheduled for Thursday (Feb 22), the GMC will convey a heartfelt apology, recognising the personal and professional harm inflicted due to outdated laws and discriminatory attitudes.

The announcement of the GMC's apology has been met with appreciation from the Association of LGBTQ+ Doctors and Dentists.

“The profound impact of these actions on their lives cannot be overstated. This apology is an important step in righting the wrongs of the past and, while the hurt and damage that has been caused to those doctors cannot be undone, it is important to acknowledge past injustices,” Duncan McGregor of the GMC said, as quoted by the Guardian.

He added, “This apology represents progress towards justice for those impacted by these historic homophobic laws and progress for the LGBTQ+ community. We hope this gesture brings some measure of solace to those affected doctors and their loved ones.”

BAE Systems, the British weapons manufacturer on Wednesday (February 21) reported a massive 17 per cent jump in annual net profit. The massive increase has come in the wake of Britain's increased defence spending as war in Ukraine drags on.

BAE said that profit after tax was at almost GBP 1.9 billion (USD 2.4 billion), while the revenue jumped nine per cent to GBP 23 billion.

"Our performance, combined with our global footprint and record order intake, means we're well-positioned for sustained growth in the coming years," said chief executive Charles Woodburn in earnings statement.

He further said that BAE's investment in new technologies would help the company deliver an "order backlog and help ensure... government customers stay ahead in an uncertain world".

Last year, BAE's order backlog reached a record GBP 70 billion.

Shares in BAE tumbled by 2.5 per cent to GBP 12.21 .

"The wider market weakness will not have helped, and there is also the possibility that some investors have simply been taking some profits, with the shares having risen by 35 percent over the last year," said Richard Hunter, head of markets at Interactive Investor, as quoted by AFP.

London Metropolitan Police has found a body in Thames River which the officials 'strongly believe' is that of Abdul Ezedi, the alleged chemical attacker who targeted a woman and her daughters on January 31 in Clapham, south London. The man was missing since the attack and the police previously said that he had "gone into" the river after the attack. Ezedi was seen in CCTV footage as he walked to Chelsea Bridge leaning over the railings of the bridge. He went out of the focus of the camera after that. Police said that there was no footage of him coming off the bridge.

The body of the yet unidentified man was found by the police on Monday (Feb 19). It is now being examined by the coroner.

"...We strongly believe this man to be Abdul Ezedi...," says Jon Savell, police commander, in a video posted from official London Met Police handle on X.

Savell said that the police have contacted Ezedi's family and were now working to officially ascertain identity of the body.

Big embarrassment: Alarm over UK's dying navy

The UK's air travel watchdog has put forth a proposal that, if passed, can see legal use of drones for delivery of critical medicines and for inspection of railways, roads and power lines. If passed, the proposal from UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) would allow flying of drones beyond line of sight. There are currently strict restrictions on operation of drones in such a manner.

The new proposal proposes that drones be allowed to fly at low heights away from the altitude required by the air traffic.

"Our proposals are a positive step towards unlocking the next stage for drone flying in the UK. Allowing drones to fly beyond the sight of the remote pilot, without placing restrictions on other aircraft in the area, will be a major achievement for UK drone operations," said Kevin Woolsey, the head of remotely piloted aircraft systems at the CAA.

“Safety comes first in everything we do and so we have identified sensible mitigations on where drones can fly using this proposed concept to make sure we maintain levels of safety.”

Wolsey was quoted by The Guardian.

The proposal represents a step in expanding use of drones in the UK to the next stage. This has potential of expanding drone operation even for delivery of goods purchased online in future.

The proposal reportedly also suggests use of drones on private property with having to obtain permission. However, such a drone must fly under 15 metres.

The proposal has been posted by the CAA for consultation, which will be open for six weeks. These consultations are part of the process from the CAA for UK future flight programme. Under the programme, in it envisaged that drone would safely share the skies with traditional airspace users. CAA is also working with private players with an aim to develop drones and newer forms of air transportation.

The European Union, on Monday (Feb 19) formally launched a naval mission to protect the Red Sea shipping from the Iran-backed Yemen-based Houthi rebels. Meanwhile, the militant group claimed to have targeted “two American ships” in the Gulf of Aden, a day after a missile attack severely damaged a Belize-flagged ship.

On Monday (Feb 19), European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the decision to deploy Naval Force Operation Aspides in a post on X. “Europe will ensure freedom of navigation in the Red Sea, working alongside our international partners,” said von der Leyen.

She added, “Beyond crisis response, it’s a step towards a stronger European presence at sea to protect our European interests.” The EU aims to have the mission named Aspides, Greek for “shield”, up and running in a “few weeks” with at least four vessels, an official said on Friday (Feb 16).

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, on Monday, said that revenues from the Suez Canal had “decreased by 40 to 50 per cent” since this year due to the attacks by Houthis.

“See what is happening at our borders...with Gaza, you see the Suez Canal, which used to bring Egypt nearly $10 billion per year, (these revenues) have decreased by 40 to 50 per cent and Egypt must continue to pay companies and partners,” said the Egyptian president.
