Two dogs that fatally attacked a grandmother in Britain's Essex have been identified as the banned XL bullies, police confirmed Friday (Feb 9). The 68-year-old lady was attacked on Saturday (Feb 3) while she was visiting her grandson at a Jaywick home. The attack on Esther Martin only ended after police officers shot the animals dead. Now, post-mortem examinations have revealed that the dogs were indeed XL bullies after much speculation about their breed.

The news comes as new rules came into effect on owning American XL bully dogs, which amounts to a virtual ban on the breed. In England and Wales, owning the breed without an exemption certificate has been outlawed.
The rules stipulate that registered XL bullies be kept on a lead and muzzled in public. Scotland will introduce similar ban later this year.

The owner of the dog, 39-year-old Ashley Warren has been arrested by police on suspicion of dangerous dog offences and released on police bail until March.

“I know there has been a huge amount of speculation about the breed and type of dog involved here, but it was really important we got that information right and established the facts," said Chief Superintendent Stuart Weaver.

"We owe it to Esther and her family to ensure we are thorough, professional and, above all, fair," he added.

Owner calls for eradication of the breed

The owner is now calling for the eradication of the breed following the death of Esther Martin. Warren, from Jaywick, said: “Never in a million years did I see [the dogs] as a risk.

“If my dogs did that to her, when I had never seen anything but love from them, then that breed just has a killer switch," he added.

Esther Martin’s family blames owner’s ignorance

Meanwhile, Esther Martin’s family has said the dogs were not responsible for the attack but Warren’s attitude towards the animals.

A court in the United Kingdom, on Tuesday (Feb 13) found three people guilty of a terror offence after they displayed images of paragliders at a pro-Palestine march in London a week after Hamas’ deadly October 7 attack on Israel.

‘You crossed the line’

The trio, identified as Heba Alhayek, 29, Pauline Ankunda, 26, and Noimutu Olayinka Taiwo, 27, were each handed a 12-month conditional discharge by the Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

“You crossed the line, but it would have been fair to say that emotions ran very high on this issue,” said Deputy Senior District Judge Tan Ikram giving his verdict. He added, “Your lesson has been well learned.”

Alhayek and Ankunda had reportedly taped images of paragliders to their backs while Taiwo stuck one to the handle of a placard during a pro-Palestinian protest in London on October 14, 2023.

The protest took place a week after Hamas militants attacked Israel and killed nearly 1,200 people, according to Israeli officials, and took more than 240 others as hostages back to Gaza.

The three protesters were later charged under the UK’s Terrorism Act for carrying or displaying an article to cause reasonable suspicion that they were supporters of a banned organisation, in this case, Hamas. The trio had denied the charges against them.

The verdict followed a two-day trial where prosecutors argued it was “no coincidence” the defendants were displaying the images merely days after the attack.

However, lawyer Mark Summers KC for Alhayek and Ankunda, argued that the police were “mistaken” about what they saw that day and termed them images of cartoon parachutes which are a “well-known nationalist symbol of peace”.

The idea that the image was of a paraglider started with “an internet group with an agenda,” said KC.

“Seven days earlier, Hamas went into Israel with what was described by the media as paragliders. A reasonable person would have seen and read that,” said the district court judge.

He added, “I want to be clear, there’s no evidence that any of these defendants are supporters of Hamas, or were seeking to show support for them.”

The judge said he had “decided not to punish” the defendants while handing them the 12-month conditional discharge.

‘Glorification of the actions’ of Hamas

In response to the verdict, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said that displaying the images amounted to the “glorification of the actions” of the Palestinian militant group.

“All three women knowingly displayed the images of paragliders in central London and therefore showed their support for Hamas – a proscribed terrorist organisation,” said Nick Price of CPS in a statement.

He added, “The fact that these images were being displayed in the context of a protest opposing the Israeli response to the Hamas attacks demonstrates a glorification of the actions taken by the group.”

A missile on Monday (Feb 12) reportedly hit a vessel off Yemen's southern coast at the time the ship was transiting the strategic Bab al-Mandeb strait, said security agencies.

The incident took place before 0400 local time (0100 GMT) in the area where Yemen's Houthi rebel group, in recent months, has launched repeated attacks targeting Red Sea shipping, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency said in its report.

"The crew are reported safe and the vessel is proceeding to the next port of call," UKMTO said.

Another security organisation, Ambrey, said that the Marshall Islands-flagged, Greece-owned bulk carrier "was targeted by missiles in two separate incidents" within 20 minutes and "was reportedly hit and sustained physical damage on the starboard side".

According to Ambrey, the vessel had a private armed security team on board.

The Iran-backed Houthis have been launching targetted missile strikes at the Red Sea shipping vessels for months which the group says are in solidarity with Palestinians and Gaza amid the Israel-Hamas war.

The owner of the group and operator of the bulk carrier, that was targeted on Monday (Feb 12), regularly trades cargo with Iran, "so this was assessed to be the likely destination", said Ambrey.

"The group owner of the bulker was also listed on the US stock market index NASDAQ, which was identified as the likely reason for the attack," it said.

Houthis claim attack

Yemen's Houthi rebels released a statement on Monday claiming an attack against a US ship in the Red Sea with a "number of suitable naval missiles".

"The naval forces of the Yemeni Armed Forces targeted the American ship Star Iris in the Red Sea with a number of suitable naval missiles, and the strikes were accurate and direct," Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree said in a speech on Monday.

The Houthis "will not hesitate to carry out more operations in retaliation to the Zionist crimes against our brothers in the Gaza Strip, as well as in response to the ongoing American-British aggression against our dear country."

"During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted," Buckingham Palace said in a statement on Monday. "Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer."

Since then Charles has been "advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties" while undergoing a series of "regular treatments. It's unclear what cancer diagnosis His Majesty received.

"Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual," a statement said.

"The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible," it added.
