The Just Stop Oil demonstrations, which have caused four days of disruption on the M25 highway encircling London, will be put on hold to allow the government time to rethink awarding new licences for oil and gas exploitation.

The protesters claimed they stopped the action on Remembrance Day to urge Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to "honour all those who served and loved their country" by making sure that there is a "liveable future."

The Metropolitan police said that the 32 days of unrest orchestrated by Just Stop Oil at the end of September and into October led to 677 arrests, 111 charges, and officers working a total of 9,438 more shifts.

Hertfordshire police faced criticism earlier this week when it was revealed that they had detained several media professionals, including a photographer, a documentary filmmaker, and the LBC radio journalist Charlotte Lynch.

The question "What is the aim of this police?" and photographs of a protester standing atop a gantry over the London orbital road with numerous officers watching appeared on the front page of Friday's Daily Mail, which added to the pressure on the police.

Outrage has been stirred by the M25 action this week, and not just because commuter travel has been hampered.

The protest group said on Friday, “From today, Just Stop Oil will halt its campaign of civil resistance on the M25. We are giving time to those in government who are in touch with reality to consider their responsibilities to this country at this time.”

“We ask that the prime minister consider his statement at Cop27, where he spoke of the catastrophic threat posed by the ravages of global heating, the 33 million people displaced by floods in Pakistan, and the moral and economic imperative to honour our pledges. You don’t get to recycle words and promises – you owe it to the British people to act,” they added.

The well-renowned ringer - The Big Ben is back with a "bong" following a five-year repair project. After a lengthy restoration plan involving more than 1,000 moving components, the giant clock that looms above Britain's Houses of Parliament is now working seamlessly. The five cast-iron bells of the clock, including Big Ben, had stopped ringing in 2017. After a week of trials, normal service will resume every 15 minutes from 11:00 am (1100 GMT) on Sunday. The day commemorates the moment when World War I's guns finally fell silent on November 11, 1918. In Britain, Remembrance Sunday always follows Armistice Day on November 11.

Big Ben and his partner have rung only twice since 2017 - when Britain left the European Union in 2021 and at the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in September.

The bells are situated in a belfry atop the 96-metre (315-foot) Elizabeth Tower, which is surrounded by external protective nets to keep away bats and pigeons. Some of London's most breathtaking views can be witnessed from here.

The latest trials have been closely monitored by Ian Westworth, 60, and his colleagues to make sure that all systems run smoothly after the £80-million ($90-million) restoration.

“It’s the sound of London back again," Westworth told AFP on a dawn tour of the tower.

“The bell’s sounded through wars, and you try and imagine what this bell’s actually seen — 160 years of development."

The Elizabeth Tower was previously called the Clock Tower. In 2012, it was renamed to honour the late Queen Elizabeth II's diamond jubilee. In the 1840s, it stood tall as the most dominant in the Westminster skyline.

“You used to be able to hear this (Big Ben) on a quiet night up to 15 miles (24 kilometres) away," Westworth said, as a chill wind whistled through the belfry.

The restoration project

The five-year restoration work entailed cleaning and repainting each of the five bells’ hammers and arms. Owing to the Big Ben's size, the flooring in the tower beneath will have to be dismantled if it ever had to be removed.

The most cumbersome task was disassembling the 11.5-tonne clock mechanism from 1859 so a specialised business in Cumbria, northwest England, could clean, repair, and re-oil every cog and pinion. Other modifications were purely cosmetic in nature.

The four clock faces are currently illuminated by 28 spherical LED lights, with a balance of green and white providing the most accurate representation of how they would have appeared in gas-lit Victorian days. When the parliament is in session, a taller LED light rests over the bells and emits a white glow.

As living expenses rise, tens of thousands of nurses in the UK will go on strike for the first time in order to seek fairer pay. The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) announced on Wednesday that majority of nurses employed by state-run National Health Service (NHS) nationwide have approved the action.

After the first vote in its 106-year history to authorise strike action, the RCN, which has more than 300,000 members, announced that industrial action would start before the end of the year.

Buckling under heavy pressure, Conservative leader Sir Gavin Williamson on Tuesday resigned as a government minister, a little more than a fortnight after his appointment into the Rishi Sunak cabinet.

Taking to Twitter, Williamson posted a letter where he stopped short of apologising for his actions but said the controversy was impacting the working of the government and thus he decided to resign.

"As you know, there is an ongoing complaints process concerning text messages I sent to a colleague. I am complying with this process and have apologised to the recipient for those messages," read the letter.

"Since then, there have been other allegations made about my past conduct. I refute the characterisation of these claims, but I recognise these are becoming a distraction for the good work this government is doing for the British people," added Williamson.

The Tory leader said he was stepping back from the government so that he could "comply fully with the complaints process that is underway" and clear his name.

What is the controversy?

New figures released under the Freedom of Information request made by a UK non-profit Action on Armed Violence (AOAV) has found that the government had hid the number of killed Afghan children and compensation paid for the casualties. The new figures state that the UK government released compensation payments for 64 children, which was four times more than the publicly acknowledged figure of 16.

The records show that the youngest casualty was a one-year-old child and the oldest was 15. the average age of children killed stood at six.

Nearly all children were killed by Britain's top forces between 2006 and 2014. However, AOAV is of the view that the numbers could go up to 135.

The NGO said that the Ministry of Defence, in most cases, described fatalities as merely sons and daughters. The ages and circumstances of the death were not included.

“In total, some 164 people (adults and children) were killed in those attacks involving confirmed or suspected children. Some 68 of the 135 confirmed and suspected child deaths were from airstrikes, constituting some 50 per cent of all deaths,” said AOAV.

In total, 881 fatality claims were made to the British government out of which most were rejected and only a quarter received compensation.

As reported by WION, in July, a BBC investigation also showed that Britain's elite Special Air Service (SAS) corps had killed at least 54 Afghans in suspicious circumstances.

Britain on Monday (October 7) cancelled plans to build a new "national flagship" to host trade events and promote its post-Brexit interests around the world, as the government cuts spending amid gloomy economic forecasts.

The ship was championed by former prime minister Boris Johnson after Britain came out of the European Union grouping. It was aimed at providing a global platform for high level trade negotiations and British business products.

It was also expected to play a role in delivering the country's foreign and security policies, including by hosting summits and other diplomatic talks.

But new leader Rishi Sunak and defence minister Ben Wallace have torpedoed the plans as finance minister Jeremy Hunt prepares to deliver a painful financial statement on November 17.

"In the face of the Russian illegal and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine and (Vladimir) Putin's reckless disregard of international arrangements designed to keep world order, it is right that we prioritise delivering capabilities which safeguard our national infrastructure," Wallace told parliament.

Wallace told the MPs that he had "directed the termination of the national flagship competition with immediate effect" in order to bring forward the first multi-role ocean surveillance ship (MROSS) in its place.

Wallace said the MROSS would "protect sensitive defence infrastructure and civil infrastructure" and "improve our ability to detect threats to the seabed and cables".

The main opposition Labour party's defence spokesman John Healey said it was right that the "previous prime minister's vanity project" had been scrapped.

The United Kingdom's counterterrorism police in a recent statement have said that last week's firebombing attack on a migrant processing centre was motivated by "terrorist ideology".

On Saturday, the police said that evidence from the scene, including the devices used, suggests "an extreme right-wing motivation behind the attack," and that the attack was "motivated by a terrorist ideology", reports AFP.

On October 30, homemade bombs were thrown at an immigrant centre in the southeast port town of Dover.
