Trending On WION: UK restricts Chinese-made cameras

The British government has instructed its various departments to not install surveillance cameras manufactured by Chinese firms at its buildings. The decision was taken amid reports of security risks posed by such companies as part of a cyber tactic adopted by China. Cabinet Office minister Oliver Dowden said in a written statement to parliament that the decision was taken following a review of "current and future possible security risks associated with the installation of visual surveillance systems on the government estate."

"The review has concluded that, in light of the threat to the UK and the increasing capability and connectivity of these systems, additional controls are required," Dowden said, according to Reuters.

The United States has already implemented such a ban as the government organisations were ordered not to use any cameras made by Hikvision, Dahua, and other Chinese firms. The two Chinese firms — Hikvision and Dahua — have long been accused of enjoying special treatment from the Chinese government and in the past few months, several politicians in the UK asked for a blanket ban.

According to Sky News, the review submitted by Dowden stated, "Departments have therefore been instructed to cease deployment of such equipment onto sensitive sites, where it is produced by companies subject to the National Intelligence Law of the People’s Republic of China."

"Since security considerations are always paramount around these sites, we are taking action now to prevent any security risks materialising," the statement sent to the parliament added.

The existing cameras made by these companies will immediately be taken down from the government facilities and the departments have also been instructed to disconnect them from all systems.

The United Kingdom Supreme Court ruled on Wednesday that the Scotland cannot go forward with a second independence referendum without the approval of the British parliament. The ruling from the top judges in the UK said that the Scottish parliament does not have the power to organise the referendum independently.

The power to call a referendum was "reserved" to the UK parliament, and therefore "the Scottish parliament does not have the power to legislate for a referendum on Scottish independence", Supreme Court president Robert Reed said while delivering the unanimous ruling, reported Sky News.

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon had earlier proposed a second referendum - known as IndyRef2 - for next October and that was supported by the ruling Scottish National Party (SNP). She also said that the next general election can also serve as an indication of what the country feels about the referendum.

"A law that doesn't allow Scotland to choose our own future without (UK parliament) consent exposes as myth any notion of the UK as a voluntary partnership," the Scottish National Party leader tweeted after the judgement.

Sturgeon had earlier requested a special order under Section 30 of the 1998 Scottish Act to hold the referendum, but it was rejected by four prime ministers.

As a result, the issue was taken to the Supreme Court and the judges ruled that the effects of legislation “are not restricted to legal consequences but can include its practical consequences” and as a result, the special exemption cannot be granted under these circumstances.

UK: South African president Ramaphosa makes first state visit of King Charles III's reign

Trouble is looming large on Apple and Google as British competition watchdog, following a survey into the mobile ecosystems, launched a probe Tuesday to investigate whether these tech giants follow anti-competitive behaviour. With this, it is reportedly possible that both the tech giants could loose their stronghold in the mobile space.

The British watchdog, Competition and Markets Authority, made this decision after concluding the findings of a 356-page report into competition for mobile operating systems and apps. In a scathing attack on the tech giants, the report said that the duo “hold all the cards” in mobile ecosystems. CMA said that this helps Apple and Google to exercise a "stranglehold" over operating systems, app stores and web browsers, said a report in Politico.

According to CMA research, Apple's Safari or Google's Chrome-powered mobile browsers accounted for 97 per cent of all UK mobile web surfing in 2021. The CMA study's respondents also emphasised how Apple limits cloud gaming through its App Store.

Sarah Cardell, interim chief executive of the CMA, said Tuesday that many UK businesses and web developers say they feel that they are being held back by restrictions set by Apple and Google. “We plan to investigate whether the concerns we have heard are justified and, if so, identify steps to improve competition," she added.

In a reaction to this, Apple said that it would continue to engage constructively with CMA to explain how its approach is based on a culture where competition and choice thrives. However, Google have not yet made any comments.

What after the investigation concludes?

The in-depth market investigation is required to be finished within 18 months by CMA. In case, the study makes a conclusion that there is an involvement of anti-competitive behaviour in the market, CMA can impose remedies on firms and make recommendations to the government on regulation, reported Politico.

This comes in the backdrop of UK Chancellor Jeremy Hunt's announcement last Thursday where he promised that government would present regulations to combat Big Tech's anti-competitive abuses. He said that it will be done before May next year with the help of Digital Markets Competition and Consumers Bill. The watchdog CMA’s Cardell said that the new protocols will address “sorts of issues” raised in Apple and Google’s dominance over mobile ecosystems. As per media reports, these new regulatory powers could be received by CMA’s Digital Markets Unit as early as October next year.

UK watchdog launches probe into Apple and Google mobile dominance, big techs staring at trouble?

Blow for Scottish nationalists as UK court rejects independence vote bid

The Queen has been laid to rest and the people have gone back to being blindly led once again by an institution that can only be described as decadent, lavish, greedy and above the law in the United Kingdom of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The Queen is dead! Long live the King! For a moment it felt like I was transported back in time to medieval Britain, where a clear, privileged, and defined hierarchy ruled these islands. Nothing much has really changed since those glory days of Great Britannia! The general public is still in awe of this racist and colonial institution, oblivious to its past history of murder, looting, and genocide in all its colonies. This institution is alone responsible for the murder and killing of over 100 million innocent civilians in their former colonies including India and the indigenous populations of America, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. This ‘achievement ‘is conveniently excluded from their history books taught at schools and other educational institutions. That’s why it comes as no surprise when well-meaning, “educated” Brits are shocked at any view or opinion that says otherwise. The queen is looked upon as God, to be fair she is the equivalent of the Roman Catholic Pope, being self-appointed the Head of the Church of England. The trappings of the Monarchy are embedded in every aspect of British society and culture and by royal decree, laws are made and changed while Prime Ministers are appointed and sacked. All in what the British believe is a functioning democracy where one family holds sway over all.

The much loved “Great Britain” name tag will go soon, along with the monarchy and the establishment who have ruled and maximised their wealth for centuries at the expense of the poor and working classes on this island and around the world during colonisation. Even during the Empire days citizens on these islands were living in squalor and abject poverty. Many people want to go back to the glory days of this country, where rivers were flowing with milk and honey and the “we are the good guys” image which is so conditioned and brainwashed into the minds of the British psyche from early childhood. Accurate history is not taught in this country but a very sanitised, pleasant version of it, mainly focusing on the grandeur of the monarchy for diversions and World War II.

This nation removed the kings and queens of the lands it conquered through deceit in the name of bringing democracy to the world but is still hanging on to its outdated traditions! A beacon of democracy that conveniently does not have a written constitution. Such hypocrisy! But why are we still so gullible and can’t see the obvious truth of where the power lies in this nation? Many people I personally know, support this outdated practice and institution and the cost to us the taxpayers. These very same individuals slam people on benefits, migrants, and food-banks, but are happy to give millions away to the queen and the extended royal family all in the name of tradition or a tourist attraction! This always proved my point that education does not necessarily mean you are aware or informed but conditioned to believe in an obvious lie. People want to go back to the glory days of the empire without fully understanding the true meaning of this statement. This country is responsible for all the major flashpoints around the world today. That’s the legacy of the empire and the monarchy, having committed mass genocide, looting of resources, and cultural decimation from which these countries are yet to recover.

Politicians who get elected see themselves as servants to the queen, not the electorate who voted for them in the first place. They take an oath to protect the queen (now king! And their heirs and successors!) Unbelievable! They then go about maintaining the status quo at the expense of people dying because of benefit cuts, food banks or parents having to starve in order to feed their children.

It’s time for action and it already looks like the new King will not have an easy ride like his mother the “Beloved Queen”. Here is hoping that real change finally comes to the land that decimated countries around the world in what is known as its glory days of the empire where the sun did not set; but now has to, in order to move forward as a truly democratic nation.

Britain's main business lobby group said on Monday (November 21) that the country needed more migrant labour for greater productivity in view of soaring inflation and shrinking growth. The verdict from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) came at its annual gathering in Birmingham, Britain's second biggest city.

The CBI conference took place after the UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak slashed spending and increased taxes in budget.

"We come together, once more in extraordinary times," CBI director-general Tony Danker told delegates in Birmingham, central England.

"Britain is in the middle of stagflation -- rocketing inflation and negative growth -- for the first time that probably most of us can remember.

"We know how to fight inflation. We know how to fight recession. But we don't really know how to fight them together."

Sunak addressed the CBI on Monday. It has been one month since he took office after predecessor Liz Truss delivered an unfunded tax-slashing mini-budget that tanked the pound and sent UK borrowing costs soaring. Right now UK inflation is at 11.1 per cent. That is a 41-year high. This has meant that food and energy costs have risen in the wake of the Ukraine war.

Consumer prices have also raced higher as demand rebounds following the lifting of pandemic.

But we don't really know how to fight them together." Sunak addressed the CBI on Monday. (With inputs from agencies) You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. More migrant labour needed in recession-hit UK, says business body

Meta, the parent company of social media platform Facebook, is facing a lawsuit in the UK that accused the tech giant of collecting the personal data of users in order to create targeted advertisements. Human rights campaigner Tanya O’Carroll has alleged in the suit that Meta has violated UK data laws by not agreeing to her prior request regarding the use of her data. According to The Guardian, she requested the company to stop collecting her data when she uses the application.

“This case is really about us all being able to connect with social media on our own terms, and without having to essentially accept that we should be subjected to hugely invasive tracking surveillance profiling just to be able to access social media,” O’Carroll told BBC in a radio interview.

Disgraced British royal Prince Andrew recently embarked on a 'secret' visit to Bahrain to meet the royal family. The Duke of York reportedly had the agenda of securing the position of intermediary between the gulf nation and the UK. The 62-year-old former royal was charted to the destination on a private jet provided by a Swiss billionaire, according to a report by Metro. Andrew is believed to have stayed at a five-star luxury property which was all paid for by the Bahrain royal family members. The report added that Andrew is looking to leverage his experience of working as the UK trade envoy from 2001 to 2011. This was his first visit outside Britain since 2019, the same year when convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein died. However, there is no public record of the trip as Andrew is not a royal anymore. Read more: Prince Andrew’s return to public life is jarring for Jeffrey Epstein victims Andrew, through this new 'supposed' portfolio, is attempting to work the oil-rich states to provide more of the precious commodity to the West and especially the UK. The publication added that "there are people there who have been loyal to the Queen’s son and have deep pockets" and could help Andrew chalk a turnaround. Notably, Prince Andrew, tenth in line to the throne after Queen Elizabeth II's death lost his military patronage and right to use the 'His Royal Highness' (HRH) title after paying Virginia Giuffre a monetary settlement after she accused him of sexual assault, a charge he disputed. WATCH | Gravitas: Prince Andrew stripped of all royal title × Andrew was involved in close proximity with Jeffrey Epstein and his child trafficking empire. Epstein was accused of sexually exploiting dozens of underage girls, some as young as 14, at his homes in Manhattan and Palm Beach, Florida between 2002 and 2005. After relatively remaining in the shadows following the expose, the prince reappeared in the public eye during Queen Elizabeth's vigil. His appearance brought scathing criticism as many believed that Andrew was able to give a slip to the authorities, owing to his privileged background. UK's Labour leader Keir Starmer says will abolish House of Lords to re-establish 'trust' in politics

The Rishi Sunak administration in UK is reportedly working on moving the country into a Swiss-style relationship with the European Union. The British government wants to build a closer economic relationship with the EU to avoid current trade barriers, reported the Sunday Times.

As per the report, the move could take place over the next decade. This comes after Chancellor Jeremy Hunt signalled last week that the Sunak administration intends to break ranks with Boris Johnson’s approach with the bloc, as per the Independent. The report made it clear that the UK did not wish to reinstate provisions facilitating the free movement of people.

Like the UK, Switzerland is not a member of the European Union but has a closer economic relationship under a series of bilateral agreements. This gives the country free access to a part of the EU’s internal market, while also allowing the free movement of people.

The EU and the UK are locked in a long-running dispute over the Northern Ireland protocol; however, there have been renewed hopes in recent weeks. Chancellor Jeremy Hunt admitted this week that Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal caused damaging trade barriers with the EU.

Amid the ongoing protests in Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini, a woman who allegedly died after being detained by Tehran's morality police, reports suggest that the middle eastern nation has given death threats to citizens in Canada and the United Kingdom who have been vocal about the incident.

On Friday, Canada’s spy agency the, Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), in a statement said that they are investigating reports of people who have received “credible” death threats from Iran which are “designed to silence those who speak out publicly” against them. “CSIS is actively investigating several threats to life emanating from the Islamic Republic of Iran based on credible intelligence,” it said.

The statement which was first reported by CBC said that the agency is also working closely with Iranian-Canadian communities which are allegedly being “disproportionately” targeted. Notably, Canada has imposed several sanctions against Tehran over alleged human rights abuses, including the death of Mahsa Amini.

Meanwhile, in the UK, at least seven armed vehicles have been deployed outside Iran International television studios in west London after two of its UK-based journalists were threatened by Tehran.

Reportedly, they received “severe and credible” threats for their coverage of the ongoing protests on the UK-based Persian language media company. The channel has been dubbed as a “terrorist” organisation by the regime, said a report by AFP.

While speaking to the news agency, the media outlet’s spokesperson also said that the threats against them have escalated due to their 24-hour coverage of the protests in Iran. He also said that the presence of the armoured vehicles was a “massive deterrence” which has reassured the employees.

This comes days after the British intelligence agency, MI5 director general Ken McCallum said that the growing threat from Iran “most frequently crosses into terrorism,” which has made at least 10 attempts to “kidnap or even kill British or UK-based individuals perceived as enemies of the regime,” since the beginning of this year alone, as reported by WION earlier.

Michael Bloomberg apologises for Boris Johnson's statement criticising China

On Friday, France reaffirmed its support for India as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. This comes after the United Kingdom also extended its support for permanent membership of New Delhi among the four countries, receiving mounting support from Veto members.

“France endorses the candidacy of Germany, Brazil, India and Japan as permanent members for permanent seats,” said Nathalie Broadhurst Estival, France's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN while addressing the UN General Assembly on the annual debate on UNSC reform.

France's envoy has also called for “greater representation” from African countries among the permanent members as well as remaining seats for “equitable geographical representation.” The debate was about the ‘Question of equitable representation on an increase in the membership of the Security Council and other matters related to the Security Council’. Furthermore, Broadhurst said that to preserve its executive and operational nature the UNSC permanent members could have up to 25 members.

She further explained that the objective of the UNSC must remain twofold - to consolidate the Council’s legitimacy and “to strengthen its capacity to fully assume its responsibilities in the maintenance of international peace and security.” France’s deputy permanent representative also stated that the question of veto is “eminently sensitive” and stressed that it is up to the State requesting a permanent seat to decide on the matter.

France, UK back India's bid for a permanent seat on UN Security Council

UK government on Thursday unveiled an austerity budget with £55 billion ($65 billion) of tax hikes and spending cuts despite confirming its economy was in recession.

UK's economy slides into recession: Will Sunak's austerity measures work?

As the rising cost of living eats away at people's wages, the UK is experiencing its largest reduction in living standards ever.

After accounting for growing costs, the government's forecaster predicted that household incomes would decline by 7 per cent over the following few years.

Additionally, it anticipates a spike in unemployment of more than 500,000 people.

The chancellor just declared that the UK was already in a recession and was likely to get worse the next year.

However, Jeremy Hunt said that the tax increases and spending cuts he announced in his Autumn Statement, totalling £55 billion, will result in a "shallower downturn" and fewer job losses.

The government's energy price guarantee programme, which lowers bills, is largely to blame for the forecaster's prediction that price increases will peak at 11 per cent in the last three months of this year.

It nonetheless predicted that inflation would "erode real wages and reduce living standards" this year by the largest amount since records began in 1956.

It anticipates that after accounting for inflation, household earnings will return to where they were in 2013. The recovery process will take another six years, but by 2028, they will still be "over 1 per cent below pre-pandemic levels."

The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) claims that the UK is also experiencing problems with rising interest rates, which the Bank of England has increased to 3 per cent in an effort to combat inflation.

Due to rising mortgage expenses, it is also anticipated that house values will decrease by around 9 per cent over the next two years.
