British PM Sunak wades into trans debate, declares 100% women do not have penises

The United Kingdom Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak expected to continue his bid to make maths education compulsory until 18, as he believes that Britain possesses an inherent “anti-maths mindset” which is costing the country. In an upcoming speech, the excerpts of which were released by 10 Downing Street, Sunak, on Monday (April 17) might argue that failure to consider numeracy as a basic skill like reading is costing the UK economy huge sums.

Sunak’s upcoming speech in north London

“We’ve got to change this anti-maths mindset. We’ve got to start prizing numeracy for what it is – a key skill every bit as essential as reading,” the UK PM is to say, as per his speech briefed in advance by Downing Street, reported the Guardian.

It added, “I won’t sit back and allow this cultural sense that it’s OK to be bad at maths to put our children at a disadvantage.” Sunak is to pitch his campaign to “transform” UK’s supposed national approach to the subject saying that it is not some “nice to have” and change how Britain values maths.

The UK PM is also expected to cite statistics showing that Britain is below average for numeracy among industrialised countries as more than eight million adults reportedly have maths skills below those expected in schools for a child aged nine.

“If we are going to grow the economy not just over the next two years, but the next 20, we simply cannot allow poor numeracy to cost our economy tens of billions a year or to leave people twice as likely to be unemployed as those with competent numeracy,” Sunak is expected to say.

The UK PM will also say that this change will not be delivered overnight and how they “need to recruit and train the maths teachers.”

UK government’s previous response to the issue

This comes months after the British government had pledged to set up an advisory committee to determine if they should make maths compulsory from the current minimum of 16 to 18. The group would include mathematicians, education experts and business representatives to advise on the numeracy content needed.

However, critics, some of which are from the opposition parties have called the promise meaningless saying that the incumbent Tory government does not have a plan or the means including money to recruit and train more maths teachers to implement their mandates.

“Once again, the prime minister needs to show his working: he cannot deliver this reheated, empty pledge without more maths teachers,” said UK’s Shadow Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson, as per the Guardian.

King Charles' coronation is approaching soon. The king will be crowned during the main event, which will be on a smaller scale. Royal carriages in which the monarch and his wife will travel are being prepared by royal servants. The event is planned to take place at the Royal Church of Westminster Abbey on May 9th.

Hospitals across the United Kingdom scrambled to limit the predicted loss of life from the upcoming strikes by the country’s National Health Service (NHS) and are reportedly attempting to retain junior doctors by increasing locum pay. The four-day strike which will witness the participation of tens of thousands of doctors in England next week could affect at least a quarter-million medical appointments, said an NHS official, on Saturday (April 8).

What is the strike about?

The strike planned by the junior doctors would be the latest one in a wave of walkouts by public sector workers who are demanding pay hikes to offset inflation that has exceeded 10 per cent in the UK. The country is also in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis as prices for basic commodities from food to fuel have significantly increased.

This has left many struggling to pay bills as union wages have fallen in real terms over the past decade, across many sectors including healthcare. The four-day walkout by junior doctors will start at 6:59 am (local time) on Tuesday and will continue till 6:59 am (local time), Saturday.

The junior doctors have demanded a 35 per cent pay raise to “reverse the steep decline” they have faced after years of below-inflation pay rises, if granted it would add 20,000 pounds ($24,842) a year to pay packets. They have also sought “full pay restoration” after witnessing a real-term pay cut of 26 per cent since 2008-9, as per the British Medical Association (BMA).

‘Significant’ impact of these strikes sparks concerns

The plan has since sparked fears among NHS leaders and senior clinicians that the strike will lead to the cancellation and postponement of hundreds of thousands of operations and appointments. This has also led hospital trusts to accelerate the discharge of the fittest patients and cancelled the leave for non-striking doctors, reported the Guardian.

“The impact is going to be so significant that this one is likely to impact patient safety, and that is a huge concern for every health care leader,” Dr Layla McCay, policy director at the NHS Confederation told BBC Radio 4. The walkout also follows a three-day strike last month by doctors early in their career that led to 175,000 appointments and procedures being postponed.

Therefore, in a bid to tempt junior doctors whose pay is 14 pounds ($17) an hour, some hospital trusts have increased the rates for locums with one offering up to 50 per cent over the normal locum rate, reported the Guardian citing a rate card sent to staff and posted online by the BMA.

UK hospitals left in a bind after thousands of doctors plan to strike again

A number of TikTok accounts, some even having followers under the age of 16, have put up a catalogue of machetes, zombie-style knives and samurai swords and are offering to sell and deliver them to the UK, as per reports. At least two of these accounts which are putting pictures of these large knives with broad blades claim to be based out of England, as per UK media portal The Times.

A Portsmouth-based account claims to be selling machetes for as little as £30. It has amassed more than 10,000 likes and 2,000 followers. Its TikTok videos have QR codes. When scanned it leads directly to an encrypted Telegram channel with hundreds of testimonials from purported British buyers. More than 200 photographs of knives, fist-load weapons, and guns are also included in the collection, along with pictures of mail receipts.

This is not the first time when Tiktok has come under fire for the type of content available on the platform. According to a research released in December last year by the Centre for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), some users of TikTok receive recommendations for self-harm and eating disorder material right after joining the platform.

For the study, researchers created TikTok profiles posing as 13-year-old users who were interested in body image and mental health-related material. It was discovered that TikTok's algorithm started recommending suicide material as soon as the user had been using the app for only 2.6 minutes. According to the findings, eating disorder content was suggested in as little as 8 minutes.
