Scientists have discovered that pet parrots that are allowed to make video calls to other birds exhibit signs of feeling less lonely. Giving the birds a tablet to use for video calls as part of the study led researchers to discover that they started to exhibit more social skills like preening, singing, and play. The research found that the parrots that called other birds the most frequently were the most popular options when the birds were given a choice of which "friend" to call on a touchscreen tablet.

Video interactions, according to co-author of the study and University of Glasgow doctor Ilyena Hirskyj-Douglas, have made numerous patients feel less alone all through the pandemic, reported The Guardian.

“There are 20 million parrots living in people’s homes in the USA, and we wanted to explore whether those birds might benefit from video calling too. If we gave them the opportunity to call other parrots, would they choose to do so, and would the experience benefit the parrots and their caregivers?” she said.

Their investigation, which was based on more than 1,000 hours of footage of 18 pet parrots, revealed that there were in fact advantages for the birds. Many species of parrots live in big flocks in the wild, but when kept as pets, they frequently live alone or in small groups. Birds that feel alone or bored may experience psychological issues that show themselves as rocking, pacing back and forth, or even self-harming actions like plucking feathers.

The scientists hypothesised that video calling could replicate some of the social advantages of living in a flock.

The birds were chosen from Parrot Kindergarten's users, a coaching and educational site for pet parrots and their owners. With the help of their owners, the birds initially discovered how to ring a bell before learning to touch a picture of another bird on a tablet device to make a call to that bird. Owners kept careful notes on the birds' behaviour, and the researchers afterwards watched the video of the 147 deliberate calls the birds made to one another throughout the study.

Dr Jennifer Cunha, a professor at Northeastern University and a co-founder of Parrot Kindergarten, claimed that the parrots "seemed to grasp" that they were interacting with other birds because their conduct resembled that of actual interactions.

“All the participants in the study said they valued the experience, and would want to continue using the system with their parrots in the future,” she said.

Oliver Dowden has replaced Dominic Raab who resigned as Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary after a report found that he displayed ‘persistently aggressive conduct’ and bullied other members of the cabinet. WION's Eric Njoka talks to Adam Schwarz, a writer and political commentator, from London on what this means for Rishi Sunak's future as UK Prime Minister.

UK's DPM Dominic Raab resigns, who's next? | World News | WION

British Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab announced his resignation on Friday following the release of a report by independent lawyer Adam Tolley KC into allegations that he bullied government staff. The report was handed to PM Rishi Sunak, who has accepted Raab's resignation already.

Prior to the release of the findings by Tolley, Raab had announced that he will immediately resign if allegations of bullying civil servants were proven true. In his resignation letter to the PM, Raab claimed that the outcome of the inquiry had set a 'dangerous precedent'.

"Whilst I feel duty bound to accept the outcome of the inquiry, it dismissed all but two of the claims levelled against me. I also believe that its two adverse findings are flawed and set a dangerous precedent for the conduct of good government," said Raab.

Raab's political history

Raab first set foot in the power alleys of London in 2010 when he was elected as an MP from Esher and Walton when David Cameron came to power. Raab emerged as a leader alongside the likes of Liz Truss and Kwazi Kwarteng, both of whom had a disastrous spell in 10, Downing Street.

He played an important part in Britain's rather tumultuous exit from the European Union. In 2018, he was named as the Brexit secretary but resigned four months later after disagreeing with former PM Theresa May's draft Brexit withdrawal agreement.

The opposition parties often criticised Raab for not having a proper grasp of Brexit and what were its implications for the general public. As the Brexit secretary, Raab did not understand the importance of the Dover-Calais crossing for UK trade.

“I hadn’t quite understood the full extent of this, but if you look at the UK and look at how we trade in goods, we are particularly reliant on the Dover-Calais crossing," he was quoted as saying by Politico.

However, after May quit, Raab attempted to succeed her and stood in the Conservative Party leadership election but could not go past the second ballot. After Boris Johnson ascended to power, Raab was appointed as the first secretary of state and foreign secretary from 2019 to 2021.

Notably, reports have claimed that even Johnson had directed Raab to keep his behaviour in check when dealing with office colleagues as well as party leaders.

In August 2021, Afghanistan was taken over by the Taliban as the Western-backed government forces looked helplessly. During such a pivotal moment in history, Raab was pictured on holiday with his family in Crete. the images of the foreign minister enjoying himself on a paddle board did not go down well with the British public as Raab faced widespread flak.

Sunak's political credibility on line

Almost three decades since the-then prince Charles' proclamation that he is more of a "defender of faith" than "the faith," Britain's King as per a Times report is all set to incorporate other religions into his coronation ceremony. As per the report, "Muslim, Hindu, Sikh and Jewish peers will present the King with four key pieces of coronation regalia during the ceremony at Westminster Abbey."

This is the first involvement of non-Christian figures in the crowning of a British monarch. Four members of the House of Lords will be part of the main ceremony; members of the Muslim, Hindu, Sikh and Jewish communities, will represent their faiths.

As per the reports, while these clerics will most probably not be given the chance to speak or even read out blessings, they will form a "faith procession."

However, as per a Daily Mail report, Church leaders are resisting the role of other faith leaders in King Charles' coronation ceremony. The ceremony is traditionally an Anglican ceremony and is also a constitutional event. As per the publication, a compromise might be required. This could mean that the King holds a separate ceremony in which other faith leaders would play an active role.

A second woman has come forward to say she was raped while working at the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), as reported by Sky news. The woman allegedly contacted The Guardian after it broke the first-ever historical claim that a woman CBI employee was assaulted at a party in London in 2019.

The second woman claimed there was photographic evidence of her engaging in sexual activities with two male coworkers while she was unconscious after a night out while employed at a CBI office abroad.

She had no memory of giving her consent, as reported by the Guardian.

It is also noted that another female employee had reported in 2018 that a male coworker had stalked her, and that despite the company's lobbying group upholding the charge of harassment, the man's services had been retained.

At least 12 women have made allegations of misconduct against top members of Britain's largest employers' organisation, and the controversy has caused several of the members to reevaluate their roles within the body.

According to the CBI, new information about an allegedly "serious" offence was given to the police on Thursday (April 20).

In the wake of the controversy, the police investigation, and a review ordered by the organisation, director general Tony Danker was fired and three other employees were suspended.

The CBI had previously rendered it evident that Danker was not the target of the most serious accusations, such as rape, that had been made to date.

In an interview earlier this week, he criticised the organisation's handling of the situation, saying he had been made the "fall guy" for the company's prior failures.

CBI's culture at fault?

The second woman to come forward with a rape claim told the Guardian that while she did not hold the CBI accountable for allegedly being raped, the body's culture was to blame.

"I was really young and people took advantage of me after a night of drinking," she told the Guardian.

"I blame the CBI for an atmosphere that was allowed to feed into people's sense of confidence. That they could act in this way and afterwards feel no worries, no fears of consequences. That they could feel somehow proud, in an office," she added.

"That there wasn't a person for me to speak to in HR who I knew of and could trust. I want to say to other women or men at the CBI that they do great work. I hope they understand why I wanted to speak about it; what happened to me," she continued.

The Guardian claimed that in order to help protect the woman's identity, it had not disclosed the alleged attack's location or date.

Following the conclusion of the first part of the review, which was overseen by a law firm, the CBI is expected to provide an update on the changes that it aims to adopt at the organisation next week.
