A National Health Service (NHS) worker has been imprisoned for five months for sending a threatening letter to Indian-origin former UK Home Secretary Priti Patel.

In the letter, the 65-year-old had abused Patel and had also threatened to 'tear' her 'into pieces'.

Pooneeraj Canakiah sent the offensive letter in the month of January 2022 when Patel was still the Home Secretary. He was sentenced by the Westminster Magistrates' Court in London last week.

Canakiah, in the hope that the former UK home secretary would open the letter herself, marked it as 'personal'. However, before it could reach her, the letter was intercepted by the security staff.

"Your time is coming to an end, be prepared we will get you," Canakiah wrote in the letter, abusing Patel, "Be prepared, b****".

"If we don't get you, we will wait and wait and wait, and tear you to pieces," he threatened.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) official said that the content of the letter was grossly offensive. He further revealed that the writer was identified by forensic testing.

"The content of the letter was grossly offensive and abusive. Canakiah thought that he would not be caught, however, forensic analysis proved that he wrote the letter," said Senior Crown Prosecutor Lauren Doshi, from the Complex Casework Unit of the Crown Prosecution Service in London South.

"This conviction and sentence sends a clear message, that threats of this nature are taken very seriously and will not be tolerated. The CPS will not hesitate to prosecute such offences whenever our legal test is met," she said.

Analysis of the handwriting on the envelope and letter proved that Canakiah was the author.

On being interviewed by the police, he denied writing the letter but ultimately pleaded guilty.

Sentencing Canakiah to five months in prison, District Judge Briony Clarke said the letter shocked her every time she read it.

"It`s an attack on democracy", The Standard quoted her as saying.

"You sent a letter which was disgusting and threatening in nature, it was addressed to a serving MP who at the time was Home Secretary. It was vile in nature, including threats, it was offensive and vulgar," Clarke said.

As per the media reports, the defence said that the Canakiah "worked all through COVID and became very unwell during 2020".

The court was told that he suffered two heart attacks and also his mother passed away in July last year.

The defence further blamed his declining mental health for the offensive step he took and further added that he suffered from depression.

The judge, however, said that she wasn't given any proof that could support Canakiah's mental health state so he must serve his five-month prison sentence before being released on licence.

The UK Online Safety Bill is making its way through the British Parliament. The bill has already passed its third reading in the House of Commons and now is being debated by the House of Lords. Dubbed as UK's 'masterplan', the bill was initially meant to create one of the toughest regimes for social media and other online platforms. Online Safety Bill has expectedly found opposition from social media platforms. The bill is currently in the committee stage in the House of Lords.

Whatsapp, the popular messaging platform owned by Meta, has been one of the most vocal opponents of the bill.

Last month, WhatsApp and some other platforms wrote an open letter calling for an "urgent rethink" of the legislation.

UK-based signatory, Element, warned it could leave the country if the law is passed.

"The UK government is currently considering new legislation that opens the door to trying to force technology companies to break end-to-end encryption on private messaging services," WhatsApp said in an open letter on its blog page dated April 17.

The letter was signed by WhatsApp head Will Cathcart and top bosses of other messaging services like Signal and Wire.

"We don't think any company, government or person should have the power to read your personal messages and we'll continue to defend encryption technology," said the letter.

What is the bill about? What effect will it have?

Critics of the legislation say that it may pave the way to empower the UK government to force tech companies to break end-to-end encryption.

The proposals in the bill were watered down in November last year. A requirement to stop "legal but harmful content" was removed to protect free speech. The focus was then put on illegal content, especially related to child safety.

The British government has said that the bill in "no way represented a ban on end-to-end encryption, nor would it require services to weaken encryption".

But it wants regulator Ofcom to be able to make platforms use accredited technology or try to develop new technology, to identify child sexual abuse content.

WhatsApp had already said it would refuse to comply with the Bill at the risk of even being blocked in the country, which has triggered speculation that it could exit the UK market.

A man from Lancaster succumbed to his injuries sustained after he got trapped inside an indoor caving experience at a Lake District climbing centre. On April 22, Carl O'Keeffe, 49, of Lancaster got stuck in a cramped tunnel at Kong Adventure in Keswick. Cave rescue specialists were sent with the emergency teams to free him.

He died at Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, on Sunday, reported BBC.

O'Keeffe was at the adventure centre for his niece's birthday celebration on April 22, according to a report by Sky News.

He reportedly fell and got trapped within one of the facility's caves while carrying four kids, spending more than four hours there. Just after 3 o'clock, emergency services were called after the staff failed to save him.

A Kong Adventure Centre spokesperson told The Guardian: “On Saturday 22 April, a member of the public became stuck in the cave system at Kong Adventure."

“Staff tried to help the man and followed all emergency procedures but it became apparent that outside assistance was needed.

“Fire crew, mountain rescue, cave rescue, paramedics and Kong staff then worked to extricate the casualty, who was taken to Carlisle hospital for further treatment.”

At the scene were members of the police, Cumbria Fire and Rescue, Keswick Mountain Rescue, Cumbria Ore Mines Rescue Unit, Great North Air Ambulance, and the North West Ambulance Service's Hazardous Area Response Team.

Parts of the climbing wall were dismantled with the assistance of staff and other visitors to make way for the caving tunnels.

Short, who was beside her brother in the hospital, continued: “It became apparent that the injuries were severe and he would not be able to survive. He was then moved to a private room and I was able to stay with him so that he could die with some dignity."

“I’m broken-hearted,” she said. “As are the rest of our family.”

Meanwhile, a Cumberland Council spokesperson told Mirror that the incident is being investigated.

“We have been notified of an incident that took place at the Kong Adventure Centre, Keswick, and are investigating the matter, as the regulating body."
