Twitter has suspended a Thai pro-royalist account linked to the palace that a Reuters analysis found was connected to thousands of others created in recent weeks spreading posts in favour of King Maha Vajiralongkorn and the monarchy.

The Reuters review found tens of thousands of tweets that an expert said appeared to be from accounts amplifying royalist messaging in a push to counter a months-long protest movement that has swelled from opposing the government to breaking a longstanding taboo by challenging the monarchy.

Internal army training documents reviewed by Reuters showed evidence of a coordinated information campaign designed to spread favourable information and discredit opponents.

The pro-monarchy @jitarsa_school account was suspended after Reuters sought comment on Wednesday from Twitter on the recent royalist campaign on the social media platform, where protesters have long had a strong presence.

Protesters and royalists have cited the importance of social media in propelling the protest movement, which has become the biggest challenge in decades to the monarchy as well as the government of former junta leader Prayuth Chan-ocha.

Created in September, the @jitarsa_school account had more than 48,000 followers before its suspension.

“The account in question was suspended for violating our rules on spam and platform manipulation,” a Twitter representative said on Sunday. She said the suspension was in line with the company’s policies and not a result of the Reuters request for comment.

The account’s profile had said that it trained people for the Royal Volunteers programme, which is run by the Royal Office. A Facebook page for the Royal Volunteers School, which posts pro-monarchy videos and news of the programme, also identifies the Twitter account as its own.

Neither the school nor the Royal Volunteers headquarters responded to requests for comment on the suspension. The “Volunteer Spirit 904” programme was established during the current king’s reign, which began in 2016, to build loyalty to the monarchy.

The palace did not respond to a request for comment. It has a policy of not speaking to media and has not commented since the start of protests in July that initially targeted the government before breaking taboos by calling for curbs to the king’s powers.

Royalist fightback

In recent weeks, royalist hashtags have begun trending on Twitter, an important platform for opponents of the government even before protests began in July.

The Reuters analysis found that more than 80% of the accounts following @jitarsa_school had also been created since the start of September. A sample of 4,600 of the recently created accounts showed that all they did was promote the royalist hashtags - an indication of the kind of activity that would not be associated with regular Twitter users.

A sample of 559 retweets of the account’s tweets were virtually all from accounts with bot-like characteristics, according to research by social media consultancy Drone Emprit for Reuters.

“Government forces have been trying to counter the protesters,” said Saijai Liangpunsakul of the independent Social Media Monitoring for Peace group. “Twitter has taken down some accounts, but there are many more.”

Hashtags promoted by the suspended account, usually alongside pictures of the king and other royals, included those that translate as: #StopViolatingTheMonarchy, #ProtectTheMonarchy, #WeLoveTheMotherOfTheLand, #WeLoveTheMonarchy and #MinionsLoveTheMonarchy.

Royalist group leader Warong Dechgitvigrom declined to comment on the account’s suspension, saying he was unaware of it.

He told Reuters there were more pro-monarchy messages on Twitter because royalists increasingly recognised the need to counter protesters’ messages and had encouraged each another to join the platform.

“Pro-monarchy hashtags are authentic, born out of true feelings,” he said.

Protestors accused by royalists

Royalists have accused protesters of inauthentic activity on Twitter, with coordinated campaigns around hashtags.

But Parit “Penguin” Chiwarak, one of the protest leaders, said protesters using the platform were genuine and he welcomed the suspension of the pro-royalist account.

“They’re not recruited to trend hashtags like the army and they don’t use taxpayers’ money,” he said.

Although not directly linked to the @jitarsa_school account, a 28-page army document reviewed by Reuters showed an organised information operation to target “opponents” and spread pro-monarchy messages on Twitter.

The document says 17,562 Twitter accounts run by 9,743 army officers are split into a “White Team” and a “Grey/Black Team” that were instructed to tweet with coordinated hashtags, as well as to like, retweet and follow one another.

The document suggests measures to appear more like authentic accounts.

The army on Saturday acknowledged the document is genuine, saying in a Facebook post it was used in a training session to strengthen the army’s public relations efforts.

In early October, Twitter announced it had taken down 926 accounts linked to the Thai army for violating its platform-manipulation policies by amplifying pro-government content and targeting political opposition figures.

The army at the time denied that the accounts belonged to army officials.

Twitter Inc on Tuesday released plans to bring back its verification programme on the site. Earlier, Twitter had promised to revamp its verification mechanism which provides blue ticks to prominent faces on the website.

It's time for Twitter to watch out. There’s a new competition -- that too desi.

The entire social media on November 24, including Twitter, was flooded with users who couldn't stop talking about 'Tooter' -- an Indian version of the microblogging website.

The website to access Tooter is tooter.in and the homepage has the word 'Tooter' with the tagline 'Made in India.'

Netizens have since gone berserk over the 'aatmanirbhar' scheme of things. And Twitter has been brimming with memes -- that certainly glorify the desi touch, albeit a little mischievously.

Singer-songwriter, Sia recently released the first look at her upcoming musical-movie production, 'Music', about a young girl on the autism spectrum. The film was immediately met with dismay by people with disabilities who took issue with the portrayal of autism. In the trailer for 'Music', Ziegler's character appears unable to communicate verbally. Her half-sister (played by Kate Hudson) is seen talking with a friend (played by Leslie Odom Jr.) about how Music can understand what's being said around her but sees the world in "a completely different way from us" and needs help communicating. The news you've been waiting for! 🙌 Music, the movie written & directed by Sia + starring Kate Hudson, @leslieodomjr & @maddieziegler, will be arriving in early 2021! Watch a sneak peek of the movie right here. pic.twitter.com/w38L2UtIhJ — sia (@Sia) November 19, 2020 × 'Music' stars Maddie Ziegler, Sia's longtime creative partner, as a girl named Music. Since Ziegler is able-bodied and neurotypical, many people saw the trailer and agreed that it is continuing a harmful Hollywood pattern of characters with disabilities being played by non-disabled actors. "Hi Sia, can I ask why you didn't cast a disabled actor for this part?" actor Bronagh Waugh tweeted at the singer. "It's pretty offensive the way you've chosen to portray this character. People with disabilities are not broken and don't need fixing." Hi Sia, can I ask why you didn't cast a disabled actor for this part? Special abilities is what I've always said, and casting someone at her level of functioning was cruel, not kind, so I made the executive decision that we would do our best to lovingly represent the community." I agree. I’ve never referred to music as disabled. Special abilities is what I’ve always said, and casting someone at her level of functioning was cruel, not kind, so I made the executive decision that we would do our best to lovingly represent the community. — sia (@Sia) November 20, 2020 × In response to another person, Sia said she "tried working with a beautiful young girl non-verbal on the spectrum and she found it unpleasant and stressful," which is why Ziegler was ultimately cast. "Did you do any research or consult the community at all?" another person asked Sia. "It's very condescending to say it would be cruel to consult a disabled actor." "Duh," Sia replied. "I spent three f---ing years researching, I think that's why I'm so f---ing bummed." One person added to a thread of criticism, identifying themselves as an autistic actor who would have gladly acted in the movie" on short notice. "The fact of the matter is zero effort was made to include anyone who is actually autistic," they wrote. "Maybe you're just a bad actor," Sia replied. Maybe you’re just a bad actor. — sia (@Sia) November 20, 2020 × Another person said it was "a mighty shame" that someone with a huge platform like Sia was "using it to exclude disabled and neurodiverse actors from their own narratives." "I've been a long time fan of your work, so this is really disappointing," they wrote. "I cast thirteen neuroatypical people, three trans folks, and not as prostitutes or drug addicts but as doctors, nurses and singers," Sia replied. " sad nobody's even seen the dang movie. My heart has always been in the right place." Among her relay of defensive tweets, Sia also sent out a tweet to her 3.8 million followers: "Grrrrrrrrrr. why don't you watch my film before you judge it? FURY." Grrrrrrrrrr. A proposition by New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to pay American people staying at home triggered a spat on Twitter with former UN ambassador of the country Nikki Haley and another prominent Republican. To get the virus under control, we need to pay people to stay home. — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) November 19, 2020 × In response, the former Republican governor of South Carolina Nikki Haley, alluding to AOC's different recommendations, tweeted: AOC, Are you suggesting you want to pay people to stay home from the money you take by defunding the police? Or was that for the student debts you wanted to pay off, the Green New Deal or Medicare for All? #WhereIsTheMoney https://t.co/wZxxz67wcv — Nikki Haley (@NikkiHaley) November 19, 2020 × Ocasio-Cortez immediately shot back that she needed Republicans to "discover the spine to face their corporate givers" and decision in favor of the Democrats' HEROES Act, which evidently does exclude a "Money Street bailout" this time. Nikki, I’m suggesting Republicans find the spine to stand up to their corporate donors & vote for the same measures they did in March, except without the Wall St bailout this time. And I know you’re confused abt actual governance but police budgets are municipal, not federal. https://t.co/GCyUagbruG — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) November 19, 2020 × Republicans have scrutinised the HEROES Act over what they state are billions in bailouts for Democrat-run expresses that would compensate their lead representatives for unforgiving lockdowns as opposed to helping individuals and organizations monetarily destroyed by them. Congressperson Kelly Loeffler (R-Georgia) additionally joined the conflict, tweeting: AOC wants to lock down our economy, lock the American people in their homes, and put the government in charge of every single part of our lives. No wonder she supports @ReverendWarnock. It’s not going to happen on my watch. https://t.co/NMAQYu29ZI — Kelly Loeffler (@KLoeffler) November 19, 2020 × AOC reacted by blaming Loeffler for having no reason for having a problem with utilisation of public assets, citing a case that she had "talented yourself personal luxury plane on an open dime and abused degenerate assessment escape clauses to do it." .@KLoeffler disclosures show you seem to have gifted yourself private jet on public dime & exploited corrupt tax loopholes to do it.
The social media platform Twitter is now launching the new feature of 'Fleets' worldwide, after successfully testing it in India, Brazil, Italy, and South Korea.

Twitter decided to launch the new feature in other countries after it was observed that the users were getting more comfortable with the platform with the help of Fleets. Joshua Harris, Twitter's Director of Design, said, "We've seen Fleets helped people feel more comfortable sharing personal and casual thoughts, opinions, and feelings."

The feature was launched in India in June 2020 and has seen an increase in the number of people engaging with the platform anecdotally. However, the utilisation of the feature itself has gone down in the interim. A reason behind this can be the lack of safety measures in the 'Fleet line'. The people who watch somebody's fleet through the fleet line can take a screenshot without the author being notified, and the author also does not have any way to find out who all have seen his/her fleet. Twitter is now working on getting these safety measures included in upcoming updates.

Meanwhile, the social media platform is also hoping to add stickers, more creator tools, and live broadcasting in the near future.

Harris also revealed that the company will shortly be launching a voice chatroom called Audio Spaces. This chatroom will be launched with the aim of creating a safer and more comfortable space for intimate conversations between the users, said Maya Patterson, a Product Designer at Twitter.

"Voice tweets allow people to share their thoughts, but we imagined a live audio space to communicate with one other person or small groups," Patterson said. "A space that feels very safe and intimate. We've used the metaphor of a well-hosted dinner party. You don't need to know everyone at the party to have a good time, but everyone should feel comfortable to sit at the table."

"Safety is critical and we need to get that right in order for people to leverage live audio spaces, so we're going to launch this first experiment to a very small group of people, who are disproportionately impacted by harm on the platform — women and people from marginalised communities — and the team is interested and the company is interested in hearing first from this group of people on their feedback on audio spaces," she said.

Zatko answers to CEO Jack Dorsey and is expected to take over management of key security functions after a 45- to 60-day review.

In an exclusive interview, Zatko said he will examine "information security, site integrity, physical security, platform integrity -- which starts to touch on abuse and manipulation of the platform -- and engineering."

"I don't know if anyone can fix Twitter's security, but he'd be at the top of my list," said Dan Kaufman, who supervised Zatko at DARPA and now leads the advanced products group at Google.

Twitter faces numerous security challenges. A year ago, the US government accused two men of spying for Saudi Arabia when they worked at Twitter years earlier, saying that they passed along private information about the kingdom's critics.

Stamos, who once worked for Zatko's security consultancy, called him a great fit for a company lacking the financial muscle of Facebook and Google. "They are going to have to find creative solutions to these problems, and if Mudge is famous for anything in security, it is being creative."

Zatko said he was committed to improving public conversations on Twitter. He praised a recent move to increase "friction" by prompting users to comment instead of simply retweeting; a next step could be to force people to understand a long conversation before participating in it, he said.

Zatko said he appreciated Twitter's openness to unconventional security approaches, such as his proposal for confusing bad actors by manipulating the data they receive from Twitter about how people interact with their posts.

"They are willing to take some risks," Zatko said of his new employer. "With the challenges of algorithms and algorithmic bias, they are not standing by and waiting until someone else solves the problem."

However, this time the offence has been taken by a line in the ad said by actor Sayani where she is promoting a cracker-free Diwali. The line, “Definitely no firecrackers, and I don't think anyone should light any firecrackers, but a lot of diyas, a lot of laughter hopefully and positivity.”, has not gone down with all and a section on Twitter is against such ‘schooling.’

The actor again took to Twitter on November 8 to promote a cleaner Diwali and wrote “This Diwali, instead of bursting a firecracker, use that 5, 20, 200, 2000 rupees,in buying a mithai or a dabba of sweets for someone who can't afford to buy it,buy them two diyas so they also feel like it's a special day.
