One such avenue was the launch of the Twitter Blue subscription service in November last year. However, nearly six months on, it appears that Twitter Blue might be struggling massively as over half of the early adopters are no longer subscribed to the service.&nbsp;

Musk's version of the subscription service has only been able to convert around 640,000 users into Twitter Blue subscribers as of the end of April, according to a Mashable report.&nbsp;

However, the more telling statistic is that of nearly 150,000 early Twitter Blue subscribers, only 68,157 have stuck around and maintained the subscription which costs $8 per month ($11 on mobile). Meaning over 80,000 or 54.5 per cent of users had cancelled their subscriptions.&nbsp;

The high churn rate (the percentage of users that unsubscribe from a service) of Twitter Blue has surprised domain experts. For an online subscription service, such a rate is abnormally high and one that is not sustainable in the long run. According to a study, the average churn rate for subscription-based businesses stands at around 5.57 per cent.&nbsp;

One of the major reasons for early adopters to not stick around with the service might be Twitter's decision to disable new signups shortly after the launch. Notably, after scammers and pranksters used Twitter Blue to create havoc by changing their names to popular personalities and entities, the company was forced to press pause on the service.&nbsp;

It was only after a mechanism was worked out to avoid such a situation that the service was rolled out again. However, the negative publicity may have irked many who preferred to not renew their subscription, according to experts.&nbsp;

Last month, Musk informed that creators on Twitter will be able to charge certain money from users to access their content, ranging from 'longform text to hours-long video'.&nbsp;

As per AFP, the April 1 deadline, and the change in Twitter policies, "puts pressure on companies, journalists and celebrities who used Twitter as their main channel of communication and relied on the blue tick for credibility."

According to Axios, the White House, which will maintain its special designation as a government entity on Twitter, has informed staff members that it would not pay for them to maintain the blue tick on their official Twitter profiles.

Media organisations, the New York Times too declared that they will not pay for a verified business account and will only subscribe to the paid blue tick service if required by its journalists for their reporting needs. 
 
Last month,&nbsp;Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg&nbsp;announced that&nbsp;Facebook parent company Meta Platforms Inc. is launching a subscription service called Meta Verified that will include additional perks and features, including account verification badges for those who pay.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Last month in a series of tweets, Musk listed a number of issues with Apple, including the 30 per cent fee the iPhone manufacturer charges software developers for in-app purchases.

A top US Republican senator has asked Twitter's new owner&nbsp;Elon Musk to conduct a threat assessment at the social media platform in order to better protect US user data.

Grassley, the top Republican on the US Judiciary Committee, has urged Twitter to do a risk assessments "of Twitter's current security posture and systems to better protect user data and privacy".

As per Reuters Republican Chuck Grassley, the senator for Iowa has made the request due to the concerns that were raised a few months back by whistleblower Peiter Zatko.

Concerns expressed in Grassley's previous letter to Parag Agarwal, the former CEO of Twitter, are reiterated in the senator's most recent letter. But according to reports, Agarwal chose not to address the issues at the time because of a $44 billion takeover lawsuit involving Elon Musk and Twitter.

The former Twitter employee testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee and warned that, among other risks, "foreign agents" may use malware to seal user private information off of the network and use that to access sensitive data on the person's phone.

As the new Chief Twit Elon Musk welcomed back to Twitter the formerly banned Donald Trump and Ye a.k.a., Kanye West, a coalition of civil rights activists on Monday urged advertisers to issue statements about pulling their ads off the social media platform.&nbsp;

The Stop Toxic Twitter coalition said Musk had promised advertisers Twitter would review its approach to reinstating banned accounts and had promised that the organisation would establish a new content management council.&nbsp;

However, as of Monday, no such council has been established.&nbsp;

According to Carusone, 51 of Twitter's 100 most expensive advertisers this year have paused ads.

He added that the coalition is asking companies that have not made their Twitter pause public to do so in order to put pressure on the other 49 advertisers who are yet to take action.

As per Reuters, digital ad sales account for about 90 of per cent Twitter's revenue. Data from the ad measuring company Pathmatics revealed that the top 100 advertisers spent an estimated $23.6 million on Twitter between November 10 and November 16. In comparison, before Musk's acquisition of Twitter $24.2 million was spent on Twitter ads between October 16 and October 22.

As per Reuters, since he made his bid for Twitter in April, the company's valuation has decreased by almost half, and his personal wealth has decreased by $70 billion.

Forbes estimates that Musk's current net worth is $194.8 billion, with a significant portion of that coming from his approximately 15 per cent ownership in Tesla, which has a market value of $622 billion.

Meanwhile, Musk has sold 9.5 million Tesla shares worth $4 billion, according to the US Securities and Exchange Commission filings.

The SEC documents revealed on Tuesday show Musk, who financed much of his Twitter purchase with Tesla stock, has sold more than 19 million shares worth in excess of $3.9 billion, reports AFP news agency.

Just two days after laying off almost 50 per cent of its staff, Elon Musk's Twitter Inc has now apparently reached out to dozens of the fired people asking them to return to jobs, reports Bloomberg.

As per the report published on Sunday, some of those being asked to come back were laid off "by mistake". Citing people in the know the report further says that others have been asked to rejoin after the management realised that in order to build new features that have been envisioned by the Tesla CEO these people are necessary.

According to Reuters, users of Apple iOS devices can now acquire the blue checkmark next to their usernames by paying $7.99 a month, which will qualify them for the verification mark "just like the celebrities, companies and politicians you already follow."

Right now, after firing top managers of Twitter Inc, appointing himself as CEO, and being the sole director of the social media company, we have to keep guessing about his half-gestures, wondering not about his future on Twitter but that of ours.

Last night, a TV news anchor asked me if I would pay the speculated $20 a month (a handsome Rs 1,600 in Indian rupees) to retain my Blue Tick. a.k.a. Verified Status on Twitter. My reply: "It depends". After well over a decade on the microblogging site, I would be sad to see that status go but you know, there is such a thing as value for money. I told the channel that I use the Pizza Principle: Just as I would be happy to pay Rs 100 for a plain Margherita, I would not pay more than Rs 500 unless it had delicious extra toppings.

In Twitterspeak, the toppings could mean an Edit button, or a monetisation model in which I would be incentivised to create quality content, or a 'long-form' option in which I can blog more than the current limit of 280 characters, or weed out abusive trolls or irritating followers.

The $20 model as discussed by Musk with his staff, would be an enhanced version of its $4.99-a-month Twitter Blue which is a tentative project under which somewhat vague features are offered to paying subscribers. These include ad-free reading, colour themes, a bookmark folder, top articles, customised navigation and the facility to undo tweets. As a customer, I would want much more than that to make $20 fly off my digital wallet. Who would pay $20 every month for something that does not look more than a digital identity card wrapped in a fancy packet?

On the other hand, Musk may be a good thing for Twitter, which has relied for too long on its plain vanilla (or Margherita) model, which has an iffy video strategy and some ideas like Twitter Circle that help users choose tweet-by-tweet on who can engage with them. There is plenty of scope for Twitter to add value both to tweeters and followers but there is a catch. It has to deal with idealists who believe Twitter is a democratic medium in which all are equal, and therefore equally deserving, or undeserving, of a Blue Tick.

The hard fact is, as I have said countless times, "Twitter is the new parliament and Facebook is the new cafe" in the digital world. Musk has borrowed the old tag about Twitter being a global town square. All that makes it political and therefore, there are those who bring in the equality bit. Here's the catch: Early Twitter days saw fake profiles and then came fake news, abuse, propagandists, and wannabes. A verified handle essentially gave the folks known as followers a lighthouse beam on those Twitter thought to be having authenticity. Celebrities and journalists became early adopters and much-wooed partners in this game. Democracy has queered the pitch but Twitter is still a stock-market-listed market animal for which Musk and fellow investors paid $44 billion. My guess is that the $20-a-month thingie that is best described as calculated speculation would be just a way for Musk to keep market optimism up to stop the stock value from falling until he cooks up a profitable formula for the company.

Twitter is a bit like a watering hole in a wildlife reserve: Various species of people flock to it for different purposes. But, to be profitable, Musk needs to look at it as a market. From his message to advertisers, it would appear the Chief Twit wants to be like a new-age media baron akin to an old-world newspaper publisher, eschewing far-right vs far-left dogfights in favour of a middle-of-the-road digital town square that would please brands seeking a sensible audience.

Town squares seem like a fun place, but you don't find rock stars in town squares unless you spot a future candidate in her early days. Good content needs to be paid for -- directly or indirectly, by someone or the other. Right now, influencers partner with brands or journalists showcase their stories to attract attention to their own company websites. Twitter needs to engage in a manner that balances the democratic urge of political idealists and the quality content demands of the average follower -- just like sensible newspaper publishers do.

However, Twitter is more of a platform than publisher -- and has to do a digital-age balancing act for that. Is Musk up to the task? We need to watch this space as the man who gave us Tesla cars tries hard in his new role. The point to remember is that in the digital age, technology platforms enable the creation of online communities, but it is the people who give it the real buzz -- not the technology. There is a difference between a meaningful buzz and confusing, abusive noises. If Musk can figure a middle path, the $44 billion acquisition tag might well be worth it.

Elon Musk the diva is now in the green room. Twitter's top deck is nearly empty. We need to see how much of the rehearsal whispers we hear actually turn out to be part of the final act. But this much can be said: there is no substitute for credible and quality content. Digital platforms are like stages that need solid actors and scriptwriters.

The best ones don't do it for free. And charging them would make it counter-productive.

Accounts must also be complete with features like a profile image and be able to prove their identity through government ID or email addresses.

Twitter said it was working to provide more information about a bevy of different account types: it plans to launch a new account of type of legitimate automated or "bot" accounts in July and memorial accounts, for deceased users, later this year. It said it was also exploring how to label humor and satire accounts.

Twitter is also planning to let users add more personal information to their profiles, the design of which have largely not changed since 2014. The new section will start with displaying gender pronouns and expand to items like interests.

Twitter said applications for verification will be available from Thursday and would roll out over the next few weeks. It said the decisions would be made by humans and that users would hear back within four weeks. If refused, users can re-apply every 30 days.

During the pause, Twitter has continued to verify some accounts, such as medical experts tweeting about COVID-19.

About 360,000 accounts, out of Twitter's 199 million monetisable daily active users, are verified.
