Donald J. Trump was the first candidate to become president of the United States without prior experience as a military leader, a politician or ever having held a senior government post.

As he delivered his State of the Union address with the promise of a &ldquo;new American moment,&rdquo; the president had the lowest approval rating of any modern-day commander-in-chief.

Yet he carries enough appeal to illustrate that what people say to pollsters isn&rsquo;t always how they cast their ballots. After all, polls overwhelmingly predicted Trump&rsquo;s electoral defeat in 2016, yet he won. Polls are now indicating a failed presidency. Is it?

Election rhetoric, more often than not, withers in the face of reality once a candidate becomes the sitting president. Not the case with Trump.

Henry Kissinger noted that Trump is different from most because he owes very few favours and debts to others. In that regard, Trump has had a freer hand than most politicians.

The Trump administration has seen more than its share of problems, not surprising given that an outsider group &mdash; separate and distinct from the political class of both dominant parties &mdash; has taken power.

Candidate Trump went through three sets of top campaign officials, and two top transitional team leaders, before he assumed office. He&rsquo;s now on his second set of White House staff and cabinet members. And today&rsquo;s Team Trump is beginning to deliver eyebrow-raising change in many areas, from defence to the economy.

Trump&rsquo;s message unfiltered

What has stayed constant, however, is Trump&rsquo;s approach to governing by bringing his message directly to his constituents by means that include Twitter and political rallies.

His speech and mannerisms not only reflect the aforementioned free hand, but also a fundamental break from the carefully crafted, controlled politician-speak that became dominant in the late 20th century in most industrialized democracies.

Trump-speak has barely changed since his campaign began. It&rsquo;s not classical politician-speak, which prioritizes an avoidance of publicly offending anyone. Making offensive comments, after all, can cost votes that could tip an election or derail a legislative agenda. Internationally, if a president routinely offends the country&rsquo;s foes and allies alike, delicate relationships are put at risk.

Measured and controlled speech that carefully avoids upsetting anyone and not playing fast and loose with readily disproved facts is what politician-speak is all about.

Politicians usually deal with any significant, legitimate domestic concerns by appeasement: Using &ldquo;motherhood and apple pie&rdquo; references in public statements, and delivering speeches that more often than not don&rsquo;t result in any substantive action unless it&rsquo;s a bona fide priority of their administration.

As long as not openly spoken of approvingly by those in authority, many alleged universal evils, like systemic racial discrimination, can quietly continue.

No spit-and-polish

Other ongoing concerns, like the investigation into Trump&rsquo;s alleged ties to Russia, allow opposing politicians to appear righteous and therefore exempt from the civility of politician-speak. Their targets can be openly denigrated, insulted and vilified.

Candidate Trump, and now President Trump, made a clean break from this 20th-century tradition by speaking to Americans and the world in a plain-spoken, homey and at times explicit manner free of the spit-and-polish that all democracies have come to expect of their politicians.

Frank Bruni, the New York Times columnist and no friend of the president, termed him a radically honest politician in some ways. Bruni observes there is more transparency into the president&rsquo;s beliefs and ideas, and his thought processes &mdash;however wrong or misled he might be &mdash; than there has been for any previous president in recent memory.

We know that some politicians aren&rsquo;t much different from Trump privately because there is a long trail of what they really thought and said during unguarded moments.

On tape, Richard Nixon was profane and angry about his perceived enemies, including Canada&rsquo;s Pierre Trudeau. Lyndon Johnson was much warier in private comments about the Vietnam war than he was in public.

The difference is that past presidents and establishment politicians hid their true beliefs better, and a less critical media helped.

Trump, on the other hand, has faced hostile media worldwide that amplify every &ldquo;misstep.&rdquo;

Trump&rsquo;s &ldquo;open source&rdquo; thoughts are unprecedented in any modern politician. This radical transparency allows us to understand the president in a way that no other modern politician can be understood.

Trump supporters hear and see a man whose thoughts and beliefs are similar to theirs, whom they know expresses ideas that they cannot speak out loud unless in safe, like-minded and trusted company &mdash; or they risk being branded racist, sexist, homophobic and xenophobic, or, as Hillary Clinton termed them, &ldquo;deplorables.&rdquo;

Such accusations are not just rhetorical. In the #MeToo era, they&rsquo;re now more than sufficient grounds to cause careers and lives to go up in smoke, to cause politicians to be forced from their posts, to be denied equal protection under the law and to be vilified in public in a way that can never be erased in the age of the internet.

The internet-amplified accusations, often dating back decades, are enough to derail many prominent people&rsquo;s careers, whether they&rsquo;re guilty or not.

Trump&rsquo;s tweets, comments are a goldmine

Trump-speak, therefore, is a goldmine for those making accusations. The president&rsquo;s unfiltered, often anger-fuelled tweets and public remarks have lead to charges that, to name just a few examples, he&rsquo;s an enemy of prosperity due to his protectionism, that he&rsquo;s racist, sexist, Islamaphobic or just plain boorish.

But to date, none of these accusations have bothered his base &mdash; or the American economy. Business confidence in America is at an all-time high since 2008, while unemployment is down.

Trump, by breaking from the &ldquo;offend no one&rdquo; style of political discourse, still appeals to those Americans who share beliefs with him that are largely overlooked by the incumbent political class that the president is dismantling.

But it is not &ldquo;populism,&rdquo; per se. Most populists, like the Nicol&aacute;s Maduro regime of Venezuela, do not have an agenda for radical change. Trump, on the other hand, insists he&rsquo;s all about remaking America, and reiterated that intention in his first State of the Union address.

The question is, remake America in what way?

Trump&rsquo;s beliefs do not fit neatly into existing and established factions of the Republican or Democratic party. His ideas are a mix from both parties that is more than pragmatism &mdash; defined as expedient ad hoc solutions that most politicians end up practising with a slight tilt to the traditional &ldquo;left&rdquo; or &ldquo;right.&rdquo;

Trump is about more than muddling through, or incremental change. He is a president of radical change.

His takeover of the Republican Party was a hostile one that paid lip service to most of the party&rsquo;s ideological dogma.

That&rsquo;s why it&rsquo;s been so difficult for any political class to coalesce around Trump. He is not really a Republican or a Democrat, but a cross-dresser with new, radical ideas.

Remaking politics

What Trump is about is remaking the American body politic. And it is happening, subtly, behind the scenes; it&rsquo;s beginning to emerge how radical the changes are that he&rsquo;s bringing about in defence, taxation and regulation, to name a few. No wonder the political class, tied to the perquisites from the established order, is revolting.

Trump is attempting to remake government in a manner that has not been done since President Franklin D. Roosevelt. And Trump-speak is a key component of that overhaul, because it allows for the open discussion of the many problems America and the world is facing but are usually only spoken about in whispers behind closed doors.

Trump&rsquo;s greatest achievement is breaking the old political order &mdash; its stranglehold on power and its control of political discourse.

This will be the legacy of Trumpism as it reinvents how politics is conducted in the 21st century.

Fight until ISIS is defeated

Reinstating America&#39;s zero tolerance on terrorism, the US President noted that as he assumed office last year, he had pledged to work with allies to extinguish ISIS from the face of the earth.

&quot;One year later, I&rsquo;m proud to report that the coalition to defeat ISIS has liberated almost 100 percent of the territory once held by these killers in Iraq and Syria. But there is much more work to be done,&quot; he shared.

&quot;We will continue our fight until ISIS is defeated,&quot; Trump exclaimed.&nbsp;

Economically strong America

&quot;We want every American to know the dignity of a hard day&rsquo;s work; we want every child to be safe in their home at night, and we want every citizen to be proud of this land that we love,&quot; said Trump noting that the key to a stronger nation is closely tied to economic growth and prosperity.&nbsp;

&quot;I am asking both parties to come together to give us the safe, fast, reliable, and modern infrastructure our economy needs and our people deserve,&quot; he noted.&nbsp;

Trump furthered his statement by talking about tax relief provided to the US citizens.&nbsp;

Mrs Gandhi assumed draconian powers. The opposition was arrested, civil liberties suspended, the constitution almost tampered with and &ndash; the media gagged. Newspapers left editorial spaces blank in protests, foreign correspondents were thrown out of the country. Many others were detained for organising protests and 7,000 persons were arrested for distributing print matter opposing the emergency. &nbsp;It was lifted in 1977 &ndash; upon Mrs Gandhi&rsquo;s astrologer&rsquo;s advice. There were fresh elections which Mrs Gandhi lost. The Emergency was one of the darkest periods in the history of independent India.

So which are the world&rsquo;s most repressive nations as far as the media is concerned?

According to the 2015 list compiled by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), the 10 countries where the media continues to be censored by the political leadership are Eritrea, North Korea, China, Ethiopia, Cuba, Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, Vietnam, Iran and Myanmar.

Leaders and the lead, rajas and reporters: most rulers cannot resign themselves to the fact that the minute they become public figures and act in the name of those whom they govern, they can and will be attacked. But the media, too, has to learn that without solid research, no story ought to ever make it to the headlines. There&rsquo;s a term for that tendency: yellow journalism.

Trump's fake news awards: He's not the first to mess with the press

He gets plenty of exercise on the golf course and at the White House complex, the president told Reuters on Wednesday.

&quot;I get exercise. I mean I walk, I this, I that,&quot; Trump, 71, said during an Oval Office interview. &quot;I run over to a building next door. I get more exercise than people think.&quot;

Dr Ronny Jackson, the White House physician, said on Tuesday that Trump was in excellent health overall but needed to lose weight, eat better, and break a sweat more often.

The fast-food-loving Trump praised Jackson, who has served as a physician to previous presidents, but seemed wary of taking the not-so-subtle suggestion to use the White House&#39;s exercise facilities.

&quot;A lot of people go to the gym and they&rsquo;ll work out for two hours and all. I&rsquo;ve seen people ... then they get their new knees when they&#39;re 55 years old and they get their new hips and they do all those things. I don&rsquo;t have those problems,&quot; Trump said.

He did say he was open to changing his diet, perhaps with smaller portion sizes on White House meals.

Trump&#39;s predecessors, Democrat Barack Obama and Republican George W. Bush, were fitness enthusiasts, but Trump has no daily workout routine. He gets exercise by playing golf, he said, even though he typically rides around the course in a golf cart.

Few books on American politics have ever dominated the news cycle like Fire and Fury, Michael Wolff&rsquo;s tell-all book about Donald Trump, his presidential campaign and first year in the White House. In the book itself, as well as in Trump&rsquo;s response: &ldquo;Michael Wolff is a total loser who made up stories in order to sell this really boring and untruthful book&rdquo;, historians now have an unexpected bounty of material to pick over for years to come.

With Trump himself weighing in so loudly, it&rsquo;s easy to miss the signal in the noise. Without wanting to give too much credence to any potential strategy of the Trump administration, it pays to think about what students of the US presidency can and cannot learn from existing theories on the presidency, when applied to the current office holder &ndash; if nothing else, to help weigh up how the administration&rsquo;s actions might affect Trump&rsquo;s chances of re-election.

For many, the foundational text that tried to theorise the US executive is Richard Neustadt&rsquo;s book Presidential Power and the Modern President, originally published in 1960. Neustadt argued that thanks to the structure of the US government, the power of presidents is measured mainly by their ability to &ldquo;persuade&rdquo; others. According to 1950s commentator Robert Donovan, this feature of the office infuriated the 34th president, veteran General Dwight D. Eisenhower: &ldquo;In the face of the continuing dissonance and disunity, the president sometimes simply exploded with exasperation.&rdquo;

Given the Trump administration has failed to score any significant legislative victories despite holding majorities in both houses of Congress &ndash; aside from a highly controversial and regressive tax bill &ndash; Neustadt&rsquo;s work seems as resonant as ever. And if the Republicans lose control of either or both chambers of Congress in November&rsquo;s midterm elections, Trump will need more than ever to develop his ability to persuade those he disagrees with rather than simply pummelling them.

Reign of the mad man

While the social media broadside is Trump&rsquo;s preferred way to communicate with the American people, that doesn&rsquo;t make him unique; Theodore Roosevelt for one made no secret of his belief that the presidency could be used as a bully pulpit. But historians usually think of Roosevelt as a president who strived to clearly articulate a moral agenda by using what Neustadt called the &ldquo;status and authority inherent in his office&rdquo;. Judging by Fire and Fury and other accounts, it&rsquo;s not clear that Trump is capable of this, or that he even has a vision beyond the nebulous slogan &ldquo;America First&rdquo;.

Thirteen years after Neustadt&rsquo;s tome was published, Arthur Schlesinger proffered what is still the most famous of all theories on the US executive: The Imperial Presidency. Influenced by the twin nightmares of Watergate and Vietnam, Schlesinger set out a dystopian vision of an office corrupted by war-making powers assigned to presidents by the US Constitution, and identified just how much the judicious (or otherwise) use of the Imperial Presidency depended on the character of its incumbent.

Richard Nixon, for instance, sought to force concessions on his adversaries abroad by invoking the so-called Mad Man Theory &ndash; a strategy to convince his adversaries he was so unpredictable and virulently anti-communist that American power under his watch was a force to be both respected and feared. Perhaps this was the thinking behind Trump&rsquo;s infamous &ldquo;my button is bigger&rdquo; tweet railing at Kim Jong-un on January 2, 2017.

During the 1980s, Ronald Reagan pursued a not-too-dissimilar strategy. At the end of that decade, Coral Bell described the Reagan Paradox: a style that blended aggressive ideological rhetoric designed to cow the Soviet Union and the communist world with a more pragmatic, conciliatory &ldquo;operational policy&rdquo;.

But again, all the work done to make sense of previous presidencies seems of little use today. From what we currently know about the Trump administration, it is difficult to imagine this president or those around him operating with enough self-reflection to frame a rationale, however reckless or dangerous, that can compare with Nixon&rsquo;s or Reagan&rsquo;s.

Stirring them up

For many Trump supporters and what remains of the Tea Party movement, a better point of reference is G. Calvin Mackenzie&rsquo;s 2016 work The Imperiled Presidency. Of all Trump&rsquo;s 44 predecessors, none comes close to fitting that description.

Regardless, the furore over Wolff&rsquo;s book will also reinforce many Trump supporters&rsquo; most distinctive view: that the &ldquo;elite&rdquo; is hostile to both the insurgent president and those who voted for him. In the book itself, as well as in Trump’s response: “Michael Wolff is a total loser who made up stories in order to sell this really boring and untruthful book”, historians now have an unexpected bounty of material to pick over for years to come. With Trump himself weighing in so loudly, it’s easy to miss the signal in the noise. Without wanting to give too much credence to any potential strategy of the Trump administration, it pays to think about what students of the US presidency can and cannot learn from existing theories on the presidency, when applied to the current office holder – if nothing else, to help weigh up how the administration’s actions might affect Trump’s chances of re-election. For many, the foundational text that tried to theorise the US executive is Richard Neustadt’s book Presidential Power and the Modern President, originally published in 1960. Neustadt argued that thanks to the structure of the US government, the power of presidents is measured mainly by their ability to “persuade” others. According to 1950s commentator Robert Donovan, this feature of the office infuriated the 34th president, veteran General Dwight D. Eisenhower: “In the face of the continuing dissonance and disunity, the president sometimes simply exploded with exasperation.” Given the Trump administration has failed to score any significant legislative victories despite holding majorities in both houses of Congress – aside from a highly controversial and regressive tax bill – Neustadt’s work seems as resonant as ever. And if the Republicans lose control of either or both chambers of Congress in November’s midterm elections, Trump will need more than ever to develop his ability to persuade those he disagrees with rather than simply pummelling them. Reign of the mad man While the social media broadside is Trump’s preferred way to communicate with the American people, that doesn’t make him unique; Theodore Roosevelt for one made no secret of his belief that the presidency could be used as a bully pulpit. But historians usually think of Roosevelt as a president who strived to clearly articulate a moral agenda by using what Neustadt called the “status and authority inherent in his office”. Judging by Fire and Fury and other accounts, it’s not clear that Trump is capable of this, or that he even has a vision beyond the nebulous slogan “America First”. Arthur Schlesinger Jr. Wikimedia Commons Thirteen years after Neustadt’s tome was published, Arthur Schlesinger proffered what is still the most famous of all theories on the US executive: The Imperial Presidency. Influenced by the twin nightmares of Watergate and Vietnam, Schlesinger set out a dystopian vision of an office corrupted by war-making powers assigned to presidents by the US Constitution, and identified just how much the judicious (or otherwise) use of the Imperial Presidency depended on the character of its incumbent. Richard Nixon, for instance, sought to force concessions on his adversaries abroad by invoking the so-called Mad Man Theory – a strategy to convince his adversaries he was so unpredictable and virulently anti-communist that American power under his watch was a force to be both respected and feared. Perhaps this was the thinking behind Trump’s infamous “my button is bigger” tweet railing at Kim Jong-un on January 2, 2017. During the 1980s, Ronald Reagan pursued a not-too-dissimilar strategy. At the end of that decade, Coral Bell described the Reagan Paradox: a style that blended aggressive ideological rhetoric designed to cow the Soviet Union and the communist world with a more pragmatic, conciliatory “operational policy”. But again, all the work done to make sense of previous presidencies seems of little use today. From what we currently know about the Trump administration, it is difficult to imagine this president or those around him operating with enough self-reflection to frame a rationale, however reckless or dangerous, that can compare with Nixon’s or Reagan’s. &quot;His path is dangerous. His path is destructive. His path cannot be normalised. I will not normalise it. This is our own form of non-violent resistance,&quot; she said.

US President Donald Trump passed a test for signs of dementia and is in overall excellent health, but needs to shed weight by cutting calories, fats and carbohydrates and starting a daily exercise routine, the White House physician said on Tuesday.

Trump, who was coy about sharing medical information during his unconventional 2016 run for office, used his first presidential medical exam - conducted on Friday at Walter Reed National Medical Center - to try to put to rest lingering questions about his mental fitness for office.

Trump asked his physician, Dr Ronny Jackson, to add a cognitive screening test to the exam, and authorized him to release a battery of data from the tests.

Trump, 71, is known to enjoy high-fat foods like fried chicken, hamburgers and steak - and, while he plays golf, he does not have a daily exercise routine.

Jackson said Trump is going to try to lose 10 to 15 pounds (4.5 to 6.8 kg) by eating better and starting to exercise,

The Navy doctor exhausted reporters&#39; questions during an unusually lengthy hour-long session, at Trump&#39;s request, and said he did not withhold any information in the interests of privacy.

&quot;He said, &#39;I want you to get out there and I want you to talk to them and I want you to answer every single question they have,&#39;&quot; Jackson said of Trump.

Cognitive test

Trump&#39;s mental fitness for the job had come under intense scrutiny after a recently published, controversial book, &quot;Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House,&quot; portrayed him as childlike and mercurial.

Past presidents are not known to have been tested for mental acuity while in office - including Ronald Reagan, who five years after leaving the White House in 1989 was diagnosed with Alzheimer&#39;s disease, an incurable, degenerative brain condition.

Jackson, who speaks with Trump a few times a day and travels with him, said he did not think the president needed cognitive testing based on medical guidelines - but added the 30-question Montreal Cognitive Assessment at Trump&#39;s request.

The test looks for signs of Alzheimer&#39;s or other forms of dementia. Sample questions include asking the patient to draw a clockface, putting in all of the numbers and setting the clock hands to a specific time. The test does not assess psychiatric fitness.

Trump scored 30 out of 30 on the test, Jackson said. &quot;The president is mentally very sharp, very intact,&quot; the doctor said.

Dr&nbsp;Ronald Petersen, an Alzheimer&rsquo;s expert at the prestigious Mayo Clinic, said he could not comment specifically on the president&#39;s cognitive health. However, he did say that, in theory, a perfect score on the Montreal test does not necessarily rule out cognitive decline. It is &quot;just one measure in a clinical judgement,&quot; he said in an email.

More enthused about diet than exercise

Trump is considered overweight and borderline obese at 6 feet 3 inches (1.9 meters) tall and 239 pounds (108 kg). His blood pressure was 122/74, within normal bounds, and his cholesterol was on the high side, Jackson said.

But the physician said Trump&#39;s cardiac health was excellent, noting the president had undergone an exercise stress test, and said he consulted cardiologists about Trump&#39;s coronary calcium score.

Jackson credited the results to genetics. &quot;It&#39;s just the way God made him,&quot; he told reporters.

Jackson said he would increase Trump&#39;s daily dose of Crestor, a cholesterol-lowering drug, and bring in a nutritionist to work with White House chefs. The doctor said he would also design a daily exercise programme for Trump.

&quot;He&#39;s more enthusiastic about the diet part than the exercise part, but we&#39;re going to do both,&quot; Jackson said, adding that he might enlist first lady Melania Trump to help.

Trump is fit for duty, but should hit the gym: White House doctor

The United States on Tuesday said it would withhold about half the initial aid it planned to give a UN agency that serves the Palestinians, two weeks after President Donald Trump questioned the value of such funding.

In announcing that it would provide $60 million to the UN Relief and Welfare Agency (UNRWA) while withholding a further $65 million, for now, the US State Department said the aid group needed to make unspecified reforms.

Palestine Liberation Organisation official Wasel Abu Youssef immediately criticised the move, casting it as the deliberate US&nbsp;effort to deny the Palestinians their rights and linking it to Trump&#39;s widely criticised December 6 decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel&#39;s capital.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he was unaware of any cut in aid but he was &quot;very concerned&quot; about the possibility because it &quot;is an important factor of stability.&quot;

UNRWA Commissioner-General Pierre Kr&auml;henb&uuml;hl said in a statement that the reduced US contribution &quot;threatens one of the most successful and innovative human development endeavours in the Middle East.&quot;

The decision to keep back some money is likely to compound the difficulty of reviving Israeli-Palestinian peace talks and to further undermine Arabs&#39; faith that the United States can act as an impartial arbitrator.

The last talks collapsed in 2014, partly because of Israel&rsquo;s opposition to an attempted unity pact between the Fatah and Hamas Palestinian factions and to Israeli settlement building on occupied land that Palestinians seek for a state, among other factors.

&quot;UNRWA has proven time and again to be an agency that misuses the humanitarian aid of the international community and instead supports anti-Israel propaganda, perpetuates the plight of Palestinian refugees and encourages hate,&quot; said Danny Danon, Israel&#39;s ambassador to the United Nations.

Even if Washington provided the additional $65 million, the $125 million total would be well below the $355 million that a US official said it gave UNRWA in the 2017 fiscal year ended September 30.

While saying the decision would sustain schools and health services, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert echoed Trump in calling on other nations to provide more money because he believes the United States pays more than its share.

The State Department wrote a letter notifying UNRWA of the decision, spokeswoman Nauert said. She said that while UNRWA reforms were a condition of releasing more money, the aid decision was &quot;not aimed at punishing&quot; anyone.

In a Twitter post on January 2, Trump said that Washington gives the Palestinians &quot;HUNDRED OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS a year and get no appreciation or respect.&quot; Trump added that &quot;with the Palestinians no longer willing to talk peace, why should we make any of these massive future payments to them?&quot;

While US officials did not link the decision to Trump&#39;s tweet, they made a point often advanced by him, saying the United States had been UNRWA&rsquo;s single largest donor for decades.

Trump&#39;s aides initially debated whether to cut off all UNRWA aid, an unidentified US official said, but those opposed argued that could further destabilise the region.
