Delhi is most likely to report around 10,000 new Covid cases today, taking the daily positive surge to nearly 10 per cent, state health minister Satyendar Jain on Wednesday said, while announcing the arrival of third wave in India.

On Tuesday, Delhi had recorded 5,481 news infections and three deaths in a day. The positivity rate stood at 8.3 per cent, a significant increase from 6.46 per cent on Monday.

“For Delhi, it is the fifth wave,” Jain said, adding, “Coronavirus is spreading very fast. The good news is that no serious cases have been found. We are also fully prepared to vaccinate teens.”

Testing for COVID-19 has been increased and around 90,000 tests have been conducted on Tuesday, the minister said.

He, however, added that only 300-400 samples are being sent for genome sequencing now as sequencing of all samples is not possible.

Anticipating explosion of cases, Delhi civic authorities had already announced weekend curfew in the national capital.

Health Minister Greg Hunt on Tuesday said that from November 1, Australians will be able to test themselves for COVID-19 at home. He also invited test manufacturers to apply for at-home use. &nbsp;

"This is an important additional protection for Australians. One of the important things is that we can supplement what is known as PCR testing - the testing that we all know if we go to a Commonwealth or a state clinic - with the home testing," Hunt told reporters. &nbsp;

A scientist involved in the mathematical modelling of India’s COVID-19 pandemic on Monday claimed that the country is likely to see the third wave peaking between October and November if a more virulent mutant than the existing ones emerges by September.

He, however, said that the infection’s intensity would be much lower than the second wave,

Manindra Agrawal, an IIT-Kanpur scientist who is part of the three-member team of experts that have been tasked with predicting any surge in infections, said if no new virulent emerges, then the situation is unlikely to change.

He said if the third wave peaks, the country may see only 1 lakh (100,000) daily cases as against more than 4 lakh (400,000) when the devastating second wave was at its peak in May.

“Status Quo is when no new mutant comes and New Variant is when 50% more infectious mutant comes by September. As one can see, the only scenario with some semblance of third wave is New Variant one for epsilon = 1/33. In this scenario, new cases rise to 1 lakh per day,” Agrawal tweeted.

She also expressed hope of India achieving the targeted vaccine coverage of 70% of the population by the end of 2022.

While speaking on the prevalence of Covid among children, Swaminathan asked parents to remain calm.

“We can take from the serosurvey and what we learnt from other countries also that while it is possible that children could get infected and transmit, children luckily have very mild illness most of the time and there is a small percentage that gets sick and get inflammatory complications and few will die but much much less than the adult population...But it is good to prepare... Preparing hospitals for paediatric admissions, paediatric intensive care is going to serve our health system in many ways for other illnesses children have but we should not panic about thousands of children crowding into ICUs," she said.

On the use of drugs like Remdesivir, Ivermectin or HCQ for treatment of COVID systems, she said there is no evidence of these drugs playing a role in reducing mortality or morbidity in people infected with the virus.

On the third wave, she said no one has a "crystal ball" and it's impossible to predict a third wave.

Meanwhile, India logged 37,593 new coronavirus infections, while the active cases increased marginally to 3,22,327, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Wednesday.

The total tally of COVID-19 cases increased to 3,25,12,366 and the number of deaths climbed to 4,35,758 with 648 fresh fatalities, according to the data.
