Pakistan witnessed its deadliest month of 2026 as militant attacks, bombings, and counterterrorism operations intensified across the country.

According to a report by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), 606 people were killed and 232 injured during terror attacks and security operations in July 2026. The report highlights a sharp escalation in violence across Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where militants reportedly used IEDs and quadcopter attacks to target infrastructure.

The Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS)and sniffer dog units were rushed to the court complex, where detailed anti-sabotage checks were carried out.&nbsp;&nbsp;Police cordoned off the area while security personnel conducted systematic searches of the building.

A similar threat was also reported at the Gandhinagar Collectorâ€™s office, leading to the evacuation of the entire premises. 

The surrounding area was sealed off as police and bomb detection teams carried out thorough inspections. Gandhinagar Police confirmed that investigations were underway to assess the credibility of the threat.&nbsp;

Heavy police deployment was also put in place in sensitive locations across Gujarat to prevent any untoward incident and maintain law and order.

On average, nearly seven lives were lost daily, with November being the deadliest month compared to all others of 2024.

Notably, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the violence was at its highest, with 1616 fatalities reported, followed by Balochistan with 782 fatalities.
According to a think tank's report, the country saw 2,546 violence-linked fatalities and 2,267 injuries among civilians, security personnel, and outlaws.&nbsp;
As compared to 2023, this year witnessed an over 66 per cent surge in violence, over 55 per cent more injuries, and around 49 per cent more incidents.&nbsp;

The minister further said that Mumbai has become a global symbol which represents the counter-terrorism&nbsp;resolve of India and recalled how the UN Security Council's panel meeting was held in the iconic Taj Hotel - where terrorists had taken hostages in the 2008 attacks - when India chaired the counter-terrorism committee.

Jaishankar says India did not respond to 26/11 terror attacks, 'this has changed'

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (Sep 14) held a political rally in the northern Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, where he declared that terrorism was on its “last breath” in the area. Addressing people from the Doda district, PM Modi vowed to free the state from dynastic politics.

"We and you together will make Jammu and Kashmir a secure and prosperous part of the country," he said.

PM Modi also criticised rival parties in the state, dubbing the upcoming assembly polls as a contest between three families — Congress, the National Conference (NC) and the People's Democratic Party (PDP) — and the youth of the region.

He promised more employment opportunities to the youth and pledged to make the UT a paradise for tourists.

The Indian PM declared his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will grant full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir if the party comes to power.

Shrinate also took the opportunity to pay tribute to two Indian soldiers who lost their lives while battling terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar on Friday and questioned PM Modi’s silence over the matter.

The Israeli Army on Wednesday (Jan 10) said one of its vehicles "unintentionally" ran over the body of a Palestinian "terrorist" during a counter-terrorism operation in the occupied West Bank after footage of the incident went viral.&nbsp;

The incident was caught on security camera and shared widely on social media platforms, showcasing the brutality of the Israeli Army.&nbsp;The video showed the&nbsp;armoured vehicle slowly driving over what seemed to be a lifeless body which had been shot down moments earlier.&nbsp;The vehicle then stops, restarts and drives off, crushing the body again with its back wheels.

"The operational vehicle that is seen in the video was dispatched in order to extricate the force that was caught under heavy fire, and unintentionally ran over the terrorist's body," the Israeli military was quoted as saying by AFP news agency.

Meanwhile, the&nbsp;Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement condemning the "culture of hatred and extremism" spread by the Israeli Army.&nbsp;

The incident reportedly took place in the&nbsp;Tulkarm area, one of the main crossing points between the West Bank and Israel. The region has witnessed repeated raids by the Israeli Army since the October 7 attack on Israel by Hamas.&nbsp;

The Tulkarm Brigades, an armed terror group linked to Fatah, claimed that one of its Palestinian members was killed in the attack.&nbsp;

As per the report, at least 55 per cent of terror-related victims were military personnel. It said that due to fatalities, Pakistan moved up four places to sixth position on the index.

It said 36 per cent of terror-related deaths in Pakistan were due to attacks by the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA). The BLA has overtaken the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) to be the deadliest terror group in Pakistan. &nbsp;

The BLA claims that it is fighting for independence of Balochistan province in Pakistan. The province borders Iran and Afghanistan. Both the BLA and TTP have been designated as terror organisations by the United States and the UK.

The Global Terrorism Index said that terrorism centres tend to be mainly located along Pakistan's border with Afghanistan. According to the report, 63 per cent of attacks and 74 per cent of deaths have taken place in the Afghanistan-Pakistan border region.

Actor Steve Buscemi &nbsp;has opened about the post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) he suffered after working as a volunteer firefighter during the&nbsp;9/11 terrorist attacks.&nbsp; 
 
The actor has experience working as a firefighter in the 1980s and volunteered for search and recovery efforts during the terrorist attacks in 2001. The actor appeared on Marc Maron's 'WTF' podcast recently and revealed how his mental health was affected while working.&nbsp; 
 
"I kept calling the fire house the day before and of course there was no answer. Because I knew that they would be there," Buscemi told Maron. "And then I eventually learned that five of them were missing. One of them was a good friend of mine I used to work with." 
 
"I was driven to the site that day, walked around for hours and then found my company, found Engine 55 working there," he continued. "I asked if I could join them. I could tell they were a little suspicious at first, but I worked with them that day." 
 
Buscemi eventually volunteered for several more days. 
 
The actor said he did not have any long- term health issues from his time volunteering but the actor does suffer from PTSD.&nbsp; 
 
"I haven’t experienced any health issues, and I get myself checked out, but definitely…. Post traumatic stress? Absolutely," Buscemi said during the podcast. 
 
"I was only there for like five days, but when I stopped going and tried to just live my life again, it was really, really hard," he added. "I was depressed, I was anxious, I couldn’t make a simple decision. All those things. It’s still with me. There are times when I talk about 9/11 and I’m right back there. I start to get choked up and I realize, ‘Ah, this is still a big part of me.’" 
 
The attack will complete 20 years on Saturday and the actor states that it could be a "trigger" for those who survived 9/11.

Both the European countries are looking at regulating imams, and both the laws will be tabled next month.

However, whether or not these were necessary is still a debate as there would have been no need for these laws if Europe had not waited for terror to strike.

These are not "preventive measures", but reactions instead. The fight against terrorism cannot be a reflex action. What countries need to do is to get to the root of the problem and understand where the problem stems from.

Governments that use terror as a state policy tool, such as Pakistan, need to be called out and the world needs to cut ties from such countries. It is here that the world needs to apply maximum pressure and put the machinery we have to use, i.e., the FATF (Financial Action Task Force) and the UN Security Council.

The state sponsors of terror are sitting on crucial panels of world bodies and being&nbsp;re-elected for new terms.

Terror knows no boundaries, and&nbsp;India made this very clear to Europe during the Foreign Secretary, Harshvardhan Shringla's visit to Germany earlier this month. Countries exporting terror must be held accountable, and those supporting such countries need to be pulled up such as Turkey and China. This list should include&nbsp;the--terror apologists too such as Mahathir Mohammad, Imran khan and&nbsp;Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The terror attacks such as 26/11 and 9/11 cannot happen with the backing of terror groups by Riyadh and Pakistan. This month, we will have completed 12 years since the Mumbai attacks, but the world has failed to punish Pakistan for that.

So when the leaders of Europe meet on Friday, here's something they should note.&nbsp;Austria will not be able to shut out terror just by closing some mosques. It needs to close the door on the states funding the radical infrastructure. The&nbsp;same applies to France.

Between December 2016 and August 2018, France shut down 20 mosques that&nbsp;were suspected of preaching a radical interpretation of Islam. However, that has not prevented terror attacks on French soil.&nbsp;France saw nearly 30 attacks between 2016 and 2020.

Fighting terrorism is not all that simple.&nbsp;No register on Imams and&nbsp;no&nbsp;lock on prayer houses will be able to solve the problem completely.

There were three commonalities between the three young men who recently attacked France: all&nbsp;of them were young, isolated and self-radicalised. It was not just the work of radical imams in mosques. It happened on the internet. The world needs to account for the changing nature of terror and look out for states that are radicalising the youth through social media and the states that create an environment of hate in the name of religion.

A French magazine republished some cartoons. The Pakistani Prime Minister gave hateful speeches. Next thing we know, there were terror attacks in Paris. One of the terrorists, Zaher Hassan Mahmood was a Pakistani immigrant. He had watched videos of protesters brandishing knives in response to the Charlie Hebdo cartoons. So, he&nbsp;went to buy a butcher knife and went on a stabbing spree.

If after all this, the European leaders continue to look inwards, then they can go on legislating for as long as they want. If they don't get to the root of the problem or don't curb terror funding and&nbsp;don't strike at states that sponsor terrorism, they will fail to make much headway in fighting Islamism.

President Ashraf Ghani blamed both the Taliban and Islamic State for the carnage.

"Today, we witnessed terrorist attacks by the Taliban and Daesh groups on a hospital in Kabul and a funeral in Nangarhar, as well as other attacks in the country," Ghani said in a televised address, using the Arabic abbreviation for IS.

He ordered Afghanistan's security forces to end their "active defence position" and "return to offensive postures, and resume their operations against the enemy."

The move comes months after Afghan forces pledged to only react defensively to Taliban attacks to show good faith ahead of eventual peace talks.

The first terror attack was conducted on a 100-bed facility maternity hospital, took place in a Shia-populated area of Kabul and involved three gunmen.&nbsp;

Two newborn babies and several women were among 14 civilians killed and 15 injured in the attack.

More than 100 people were rescued during the hours-long attack on the hospital. The Dasht-e-Barchi area, where the hospital is located, is largely inhabited by the Shia Hazara community, which has been repeatedly targeted by Daesh.

The second strike was on a funeral procession for a local police chief which was taking place in a district of eastern Nangarhar province. It included lawmakers and provincial council members.&nbsp;

At least 26 people died and over 60 were injured in the suicide blast.

The attacker detonated his explosives in the middle of the ceremony, said Ataullah Khogyani, spokesman for the governor of Nangarhar province.

The documents reveal that the minority Muslim population have been held in detention camp even if they have not committed a crime, but have downloaded&nbsp;apps to download religious material.&nbsp;

WION caught up with Fergus Shiel, the Project manager of 'China Cables', an ICIJ investigation report to discuss the horrors of Xinjiang.

WION: How is China Cables different from other exposes, including the latest NYT expose?

Fergus Shiel: Two things differentiate China Cables from previous investigations, that an operation manual has revealed the camps in which more than a million Uighurs and other ethnic minorities are understood to be detained. The NYT had policy settings of these camps, anecdotal reports, satellite images, but this is the very first time that a document outlining the camps have been leaked we understand that it is the first document of it's kind to come out of China for the last thirty years because of it's classification level.

The second thing that we can say about it is, that the first time the surveillance platform and it's a vast sweep has been revealed in such details. We have one document which is the operational manual for the camps where more than a million Uighurs are believed to be detained We also have four(bulletins) directives from the Chief security person in Xinjiang outlining the kind of data which is used as the basis for detaining the person without charge, without judicial process. And the smallest thing can get you detained, in 2017 one week alone 15,000 people were detained according to the bulletins and many of those people were detained because of an app on the phone, visa to travel outside the country or returned to the country or mere suspicion of the behaviour which the govt considers unacceptable.

WION: What do the classified intelligence briefings reveal about the scope and ambition of Chines govt's AI-based policing platform?

Fergus Shiel: Do you think the AI platform is trying arrests as pre-crime prevention efforts and does the Xinjiang police take these orders directly from IJOP or cybernetic?

The cybernetic tools pull out the most intimate details of the people's lives into a huge database and that becomes the basis for local authorities to believe that they can predict who may commit a crime in the future.&nbsp;

The final document illustrates a court case of a Uighur man who is incredibly jailed for 10 years, for telling his work colleagues that they should be good Muslims, they should not swear, they should not watch pornography for that he was jailed for 10 years. And this gives you an idea of the repressive nature of the data collection.

WION: Is there evidence that can link him to Xi?

Fergus Shiel: What we know is that Xi Jinping authorised in speeches and directions after some horrific terror attacks in Xinjiang and the response from Chinese authorities have been extraordinarily sweeping.&nbsp;

Xinjiang authorities with the approval and encouragement of Beijing have detained more than a million people. There are 11 million Uighurs in Xinjian. Every family has someone who has disappeared into camps. Documents that we have shown that once they are in the camps they have to learn Mandarin, forced to learn Chinese law we are not sure what that means. Essentially it is targetting of ethnic minorities to socially re-engineer them. China says the reason to do this is to prevent terrorism and to re-educate impoverished community, but what our documents show is that people who are never suspected of terrorism, people who have never committed a crime, more than a million people who have never committed a crime have been detained nevertheless.

Once they are in the camps the regiment that they suffer under is rigorous, they are guarded by police stations, cameras.&nbsp;

The detainees must use the same seat every day and must line up in the same way.

WION: What are the differences between the 3 categories of security zones?

Fergus Shiel: According to the Chinese govt, the camps are entirely designed to re-train, re-skill impoverished people to improve themselves but in reality, the documents show they are prisons, where you are put right off the street without going through a judicial process.

We also know that there are three levels of security inside the camps. The detainees/trainees find themselves either in minimum, medium or maximum-security jails.

And in order to be freed from the camps, you have to be in minimum security, so if you are in maximum security you will spend longer time in the camp and we also know from the documents that they should stay for a year in the camps and after that, they should be retrained but in effect we have spoken to 40 Uighurs who had stayed in the camps we know that is not accurate and some have spent less time and some more time there. The manual states they have to stay for one year but in reality, it could be more or less than one year.

WION: What do you infer from the creepy section on manners, change of clothes?

Fergus Shiel: We understand from experts that many of Han Chinese view Uighurs as less cosmopolitan, less modern than they are.&nbsp;

Consequently, we see in the documents is this bizarre, chilling, horrific effort to retrain, reengineer a huge community of more than a million people in basic hygiene.

We learned from former detainees that conditions are so awful that some of the dormitories are crowded, there are one or two commodes so that people who want to go to the toilet in the night are forced to use very few facilities. One of the oddest and most chilling aspects is that people have two to three minutes in the toilet, so even the toilet time is regulated. The way you sleep is regulated, they are told that they can sleep only on one side, so camp guards tell them where to sit, where to line up, where to sleep, how long can they can go to the toilet. They monitor them with facial recognition, they take away their phones. They are not allowed to contact friends or families. And this is called by Chines govt as free and voluntary camps but everything in the manual and what we have learned from talking to former inmates that this is not the case.

WION: How local authorities are targeting Uighurs?

Fergus Shiel: IJOR has 4 bulletins (directives) essentially to collect data. It is mass surveillance Uighurs and other ethnic minorities in Xinjiang, what they say amongst other things that people who have a certain app on their phones can be targetted, detained, people who leave the country , the people who come back into the country , people who apply for visa , connections with people overseas or if you try to bypass the firewall to contact people overseas so essentially anyone who has connection to the outside world from Xinjiang is immediately suspect and can be targetted for detention. and we know the huge number of people detained something like more than 15,000 people in one week of June 2017 were detained, that is not fanciful not exaggerated but real, they are targeting everyone and viewing everyone with suspicion. &nbsp;

WION: What is the evidence against the role of Chinese embassies in tracking Uighurs?

Fergus Shiel: All we can tell the Uighurs that we have spoken with abroad in Ireland, Turkey, Netherland, Germany, and Canada.&nbsp;

What they all say is that only their friends and family being monitored in Xinjiang but also have their local embassy monitoring them, that they are frightened whether it is Melbourne, Berlin or it's Dublin or Toronto they worry that their Chinese embassy is monitoring them&nbsp;

WION: What is the number of non-Chinese or foreign citizens in these prisons?

Fergus Shiel: Oh Yes we think so, I think the figure is like forty-eight Australian Uighurs in detention camps and it makes sense as that documents say that people who are under target are people who have visas for other countries so it makes sense, these are people with dual nationalities who are in the camps. Nobody knows the exact number of people in the camps, what we do know is that human rights groups, overseas govt have said that it is one million but some people expect it to be more than two million. To give an example in India it will be the city with a size of the equivalent to Varanasi, so it is what you are to talk about. You have to go back in history to World War two to find anything similar. You see almost one-tenth of the community disappears in detention camps.

Xi Jinping authorised mass detention through speeches after terror attacks in Xinjiang: Project manager 'China Cables'

Australia will block access to internet domains hosting terrorist material during crisis events and will consider legislation to force digital platforms to improve the safety of their services, officials said on Sunday.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who is in France to take part in the G7 leaders' forum, said the government intended to prevent extremists from exploiting digital platforms to post extremely violent content.

"We are doing everything we can to deny terrorists the opportunity to glorify their crimes," he said in a statement.

Australia and New Zealand have increased scrutiny of websites and social media companies in the wake of the Christchurch massacre in March, when 51 worshippers were killed in attacks on two New Zealand mosques.

The attack was live-streamed by alleged gunman Brenton Tarrant over Facebook.

The government said it would establish a framework to block domains hosting such material. Australia's eSafety Commissioner would determine on a case-by-case basis what should be censored and was working with industry on arrangements to quickly block access during an attack.

A 24/7 Crisis Coordination Centre would be established to monitor the online world for extreme violence or terrorist material.

In addition to extremist violence, domains hosting any abhorrent violent material - defined as content showing murder, attempted murder, rape, torture, or kidnapping - that is recorded by anyone involved in the conduct also would be blocked, the government said.

The government did not elaborate on what legislative options would be used if digital platforms failed to improve safety.

Tech giants including Facebook, YouTube, Amazon, Microsoft&nbsp;and Twitter, along with Telstra, Vodafone, TPG and Optus&nbsp;are expected to provide details to the government by the end of next month on how they will carry out the recommendations.

The firms are all members of the Taskforce to Combat Terrorist and Extreme Violent Material Online, which had recommended a clear framework be established.

It was not immediately clear how the move would affect media reporting of terror attacks or civil unrest.

In addition to extremist violence, domains hosting any abhorrent violent material - defined as content showing murder, attempted murder, rape, torture, or kidnapping - that is recorded by anyone involved in the conduct also would be blocked, the government said. The government did not elaborate on what legislative options would be used if digital platforms failed to improve safety. Tech giants including Facebook, YouTube, Amazon, Microsoft and Twitter, along with Telstra, Vodafone, TPG and Optus are expected to provide details to the government by the end of next month on how they will carry out the recommendations. The firms are all members of the Taskforce to Combat Terrorist and Extreme Violent Material Online, which had recommended a clear framework be established. It was not immediately clear how the move would affect media reporting of terror attacks or civil unrest.
