All eyes are on the forthcoming French Open 2023 edition, which kicks off on May 28 in Paris, France. With no Rafael Nadal -- who announced his decision to withdraw from the tournament due to a hip injury -- legendary star John McEnroe feels Novak Djokovic has a great chance of lifting the title at the Roland Garros.&nbsp;

It is to be noted that Djokovic has so far&nbsp;won 22 Grand Slam singles titles. Only two of them have come at the French Open, in 2016 and 2021. With no Nadal, his longtime rival, the Serbian will hope to end&nbsp;as the eventual winner, but will be wary of the threat posed by world number one Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, etc.&nbsp;

If Djokovic wins the French Open, he will become&nbsp;the most successful male player with as many as 23 titles (currently, Nadal is tied with the Serbian at 22). In addition, the 36-year-old will inch&nbsp;closer to&nbsp;Margaret Court’s record for most Grand Slams (24), combining men’s and women’s tennis.&nbsp;

Ahead of French Open's commencement, McEnroe was quoted as saying, "He's tied with Rafa, so this is an opening. He's had a tough year and a half in a lot of ways, and he's also done some incredible things. Novak, he's always looking for some inspiration, some fuel, and he's got some now, and he's got a great chance."

<h2>Will 2024 be Rafa's last?</h2>

Last week, Nadal addressed a&nbsp;presser where he said, "The evolution of the injury I sustained in Australia has not gone as I would have liked. I have lost goals along the way, and Roland Garros becomes impossible. At this moment, I won't be able to be at Roland Garros. With what that tournament is for me, you can imagine how difficult it is. I have no intention of continuing to play for the next few months."

Further, he made a big claim by saying, "2024 is&nbsp;probably going to be my last year on the professional tour, I can't say this 100 per cent because you never know what's going to happen."

With Nadal (14-time French Open champion) missing the clay-court tournament for the first time since 2005, Djokovic has a great chance to move past him in the Grand Slam tally. Will he be able to triumph over the young troops? Only time will tell...

Tennis: Djokovic has great chance of winning French Open 2023 in Nadal’s absence, feels John McEnroe

World number one Carlos Alcaraz faces a tough path to a maiden French Open title after being placed in the same half of the draw as 22-times Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic on Thursday. In the absence of 14-times winner and defending champion Rafael Nadal, who will miss the claycourt major through injury, all eyes are on Djokovic and Alcaraz.

The 20-year-old Alcaraz, who will play a qualifier in the opening round, could face some treacherous match-ups en route to a potential semi-final against world number three Djokovic with 2021 runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas, Lorenzo Musetti and Felix Auger-Aliassime in the top quarter of the draw. Djokovic, who starts against Aleksandar Kovacevic, has a seemingly smooth journey to the last four with Russian seventh seed Andrey Rublev his main threat.

World number two Daniil Medvedev, who plays a qualifier in the first round, is in the lower part of the draw and could face either last year's runner-up Casper Ruud or Norway's Holger Rune. Sixth seed Rune won the Munich title on clay this season and reached the final in Monte Carlo and Rome, losing to Medvedev in the Italian capital.

"It's going to be an emotional edition of the French Open after (tournament director) Amelie Mauresmo received a call from Rafael Nadal saying he could not take part in the tournament," French federation president Gilles Moretton said.

"It will also be emotional because it marks the 40th anniversary of Yannick Noah's triumph at Roland Garros."

No French man has won the singles' title since 1983 and it would take a miracle to see one of them lift the Musketeers Cup on June 11. In the women's draw, defending champion and world number one Iga Swiatek will start against Cristina Bucsa, the world number 67.

She faces a potential quarter-final clash against Coco Gauff, the American she beat in last year's final. Swiatek, who retired in Rome with a thigh injury, has already started practising at Roland Garros this week. Anhelina Kalinina, who reached the final in Rome earlier this month, could stand in Gauff's way in the third round.

French hopes will rest on the shoulders of fifth seed Caroline Garcia, who is on a quarter-final collision course with second seed Aryna Sabalenka. Belarusian Sabalenka, the Australian Open champion, beat Swiatek in the final of the Madrid Open last month.

Rome champion Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan is expected to have a smooth run to the last eight, where she could face Tunisian seventh seed Ons Jabeur.

Tennis: Tough road ahead for Carlos Alcaraz, defending champion Iga Swiatek for French Open title

Ukrainian&nbsp;tennis&nbsp;player Lesia Tsurenko says she and her compatriots' only resort is to beat their Russian and Belarusian rivals "on any field" as she is resigned to sports organisations not taking tougher action. Russian and Belarusian players have been competing on both the ATP and WTA tours under a neutral flag since Vladimir Putin launched Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 with the assistance of Belarus.

Tsurenko, 33, told AFP in an interview she was feeling "big stress" as she waits to see if she is drawn against a Russian or Belarusian in the French Open which starts on Sunday. However, she also sounded a defiant note. "My message for the French Open is it is like what I said about other sports - we just have to go and beat them on any field," she said. "There is no sense for Ukrainian sportsmen to give up. What sort of message does that give?

"In&nbsp;tennis&nbsp;we tried so many things to ban them and the&nbsp;tennis&nbsp;organisations do not want to listen to us." Tsurenko is frustrated by the lack of support, even in private, she and her fellow Ukrainians have received from Russian and Belarusian rivals even though some "used to be very good friends".

"Just one person spoke directly to me the first day of the war," she said. "That person told me with tears in their eyes that everything going on is so terrible. "Now no more players talk to me. I do not have much sympathy for any of them. I can just say if they suffer we suffer much more. "There are many ways that you can help in these cases. You can change citizenship or move your family if you are afraid. "I honestly do not think they want to speak out because those who support the war will be revealed."

<h2>- 'Using my name' -</h2>

Tsurenko -- ranked 63 in the world having reached a career-high 23 -- had a well-publicised panic attack which forced her to withdraw from playing&nbsp;Australian Open&nbsp;champion Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus in the third round of the Indian Wells tournament in April. Tsurenko said the panic attack stemmed from an "unpleasant conversation" with WTA CEO Steve Simon.

"I was so shocked that a year ago Steve Simon told us if any player will show their support for the war, this person will be banned. "Then one year on he changes his attitude to, 'it is ok to support the war'. "It shocked me so much it just blew my mind."

Tsurenko was able somehow, she says, to win her second round match but saw herself being used as a propaganda tool if she played Sabalenka. "I just imagined if I played that match on centre court then people like Simon will say at a sports chiefs meeting 'you know they played against each other and it is okay'. "He would be using my name in a way I do not want it to be used."

Tsurenko, whose best Grand Slam performance was a quarter-final at the 2018 US Open, says incredulously the "Russians think they are owed something". "I have a feeling now the IOC is using&nbsp;tennis&nbsp;as some kind of bridge... to say&nbsp;tennis&nbsp;is all good, they are playing against each other and it is not a problem and will use that in their decision about the Olympics. "But it is a problem. It is very tough for Ukrainians to play against Russia and Belarus because of many reasons.

"The WTA and IOC are only looking at sports from a perspective of Russian and Belarusian human rights and ignore the violations of the Ukrainians' rights."&nbsp; Tsurenko has yet to return to Ukraine since the invasion but her mother Larisa and sister Oksana have remained there -- the latter in Kyiv which this month has come under renewed bombardment. "She tells me she feels like a zombie," said Tsurenko. "She is woken up every night and has to go to a safe place."

Tsurenko though is determined one day she will move back to the capital city. "Kyiv is my biggest love. That is my city and the place I love most."

Former world number one Simona Halep has accused the International&nbsp;Tennis&nbsp;Integrity Agency (ITIA) of seeking to further delay her independent tribunal doping hearing and said she is being denied her right to be heard. The 31-year-old former Wimbledon and French Open champion has been provisionally suspended since October 2022 after testing positive for banned blood-booster roxadustat at the U.S. Open last year.

Halep has strongly denied knowingly taking the banned substance and has said she has evidence to show that small amounts of the anaemia drug entered her system from a licensed supplement that was contaminated. Halep has said she sent evidence about the contamination to the International&nbsp;Tennis&nbsp;Federation in December and hoped her case would be heard by an independent tribunal in February but that it was postponed and a new date in March was also put back.

Last week Halep was charged with a further and separate breach of the&nbsp;Tennis&nbsp;Anti-Doping Programme and asked again to be judged by an independent tribunal. In a statement posted on Twitter, Halep said that while the ITIA was publicly stating it was committed to engaging her in an "empathetic, efficient and timely manner" they were at the same time requesting the tribunal delay her hearing for a third time.

"I am once again extremely shocked and disappointed by the ITIA's attitude," she added. "The ITIA publicly states one thing while privately doing another, I have repeatedly asked for my hearing and the ITIA has repeatedly sought to delay it."

The independent ITIA, which was established by&nbsp;tennis' international governing bodies to oversee integrity matters such as doping and corruption, did not immediately reply to a request for comment out-of-hours by Reuters. It has previously said the process was "ongoing" in line with the World Anti-Doping Code. "When is it going to stop? I ask the question once again," said Halep. "I am entitled to a quick hearing. The French Open is offering players at this year's tournament free access to a tool that will filter hateful messages on their social media platforms in a bid to prevent cyberbullying and harassment, organisers said on Monday. The French&nbsp;Tennis&nbsp;Federation (FFT) said that artificial intelligence will be used to moderate comments players receive on posts in real-time - with responses analysed in less than 200 milliseconds - and care will be taken about what is censored.

"As part of its strategy to take care of the players' mental health, the FFT decided to collaborate with 'Bodyguard' to fight against cyberbullying," the FFT said in a statement. "A team of linguists creates word patterns that enable the system to be updated in real time according to what is posted on social media, in order to generate a more contextual analysis."

Tennis: French Open comes up with unique ploy, offers players tool to filter out online abuse

Three-time Grand Slam champion Britain's Andy Murray is the latest of the big four to pull out of the French Open 2023 to focus on Wimbledon. Earlier, 14-time winner at Roland Garros, Rafael Nadal, also withdrew his name from his favourite event as he failed to completely recover from the hip injury he sustained during the Australian Open early this year.

With Roger Federer also hanging his boots from professional tennis in 2022, Serbian Novak Djokovic is the only one left out of the fab-four to participate in this year's French Open.

Having participated in clay-court Slam only once since 2017, Murray won the Challenger event in Aix-en-Provence in May this year, beating Tommy Paul in the finals.

The 2016 French Open finalist got knocked out in a few other ATP tour events, including Rome, Madrid, and Monte Carlo. His most recent loss came against his rival Stan Wawrinka in Bordeaux.

The 36-year-old, speaking with the Guardian earlier, had informed about his chances of not being available for the French Open this year. He said,

"It's just what the right thing is to prioritise at this stage in my career. I trust my body now, but I'm aware that my best chance of having a deep run is more likely to happen at Wimbledon," Murray told Guardian.

Meanwhile, Murray, 36, plans to compete in the Cinch Championships at Queen's Club, scheduled from June 19th to 25th. By choosing to sit out of the French Open, the Scottish tennis star will also have a chance to participate in the Surbiton grass-court Challenger event that coincides with the second week of the French Open (from June 4-11), which begins on May 22nd.

After undergoing hip resurfacing surgery in 2019, Murray's rankings dropped to 502nd, and upon his return, he climbed to the 42nd spot. His prime focus, for now, would remain to play well at Wimbledon and potentially secure a seeding.&nbsp;

<h2>Nadal set to miss the French Open 2023</h2>

As Nadal is recovering from the abdominal strain, he decided to step aside from participating in this year's second Slam.&nbsp;

Not only this, but the 22-time Grand Slam winner also revealed that 2024 would be his last year as a professional tennis player, putting curtains down on a brilliant two-decade career.

After undergoing hip resurfacing surgery in 2019, Murray's rankings dropped to 502nd, and upon his return, he climbed to the 42nd spot. His prime focus, for now, would remain to play well at Wimbledon and potentially secure a seeding. Nadal set to miss the French Open 2023 As Nadal is recovering from the abdominal strain, he decided to step aside from participating in this year's second Slam. Not only this, but the 22-time Grand Slam winner also revealed that 2024 would be his last year as a professional tennis player, putting curtains down on a brilliant two-decade career. The Big Three in tennis, such as Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, have ruled the sport for several years. In recent times, a lot has been said and written about the generational shift waiting to take place with a plethora of young talents -- Carlos Alcaraz, Casper Ruud,&nbsp;Dane Holger Rune, etc. -- looking set to rule the circuit for long.

With Djokovic's quarter-final defeat in the ongoing Italian Open 2023 edition, the Serb feels the 'new generation is here already'. “A new generation is here already,” Djokovic told reporters. “Alcaraz is No. 1 in the world from Monday, obviously he’s playing amazing tennis. I think it’s also good for our sport that we have new faces, new guys coming up," he further opined.

<h2>'I’m personally still trying to hang in there'</h2>

Djokovic asserted, "We’ve been saying this for years that we can expect that moment to come when you have a kind of shift of generations." He further added, "I'm personally still trying to hang in there with all of them. I still have the hunger to keep going. Let’s see how far I’m going to play."

While Federer retired in 2022, Nadal has been out of action due to injury concerns -- also withdrawing from the upcoming French Open 2023 on Thursday (May 18) -- whereas Djokovic has not remained consistent as he was some time back. Thus, there is a far chance that he might be stretched considerably in the forthcoming Roland Garros, commencing on May 22, for the mega title.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, on Thursday, Nadal announced his decision to pull out of the French Open due to a hip injury. He will be out for months and also expects 2024 to probably be his last year in professional tennis.

'New generation is here already': Novak Djokovic on young talents after Rome quarter-final exit

Tennis great Rafael Nadal will not play the French Open for the first time in his career. The 22-time Grand Slam champion says he plans to end his career after the 2024 season. Can the 36-year-old still compete with the best in the business for the major titles?

Rafael Nadal set to retire in 2024

Rafael Nadal will announce if he will compete in the French Open on Thursday, amid a long-term injury struggle and some Spanish reports that he will withdraw. The 22-time Grand Slam winner has battled to recover from a hip injury he sustained in January at the Australian Open, not playing since then.&nbsp;

"If he plays or not and the reasons either way will only be communicated tomorrow," said a spokesman for Nadal on Wednesday.

Nadal will speak at 4pm local time (1400 GMT) on Thursday at his Rafa Nadal academy in Mallorca.

The Spaniard, 36, pulled out of the Barcelona and Madrid Open tournaments among others in the run-up to Roland Garros, and earlier in May confirmed he would not participate in the Italian Open.

The French Open, which he has won on a record 14 occasions, starts in Paris on May 28.

Nadal's struggles with fitness over the past couple of years have created wider doubts concerning his career. He has competed in just four matches in 2023, winning only once.

The superstar hoped to battle with Novak Djkovic in Paris for a record extending 23rd Grand Slam, after the Serb pulled level with him by winning the Australian Open.

"It depends if Nadal plays or not," joked Djokovic this week when asked if the French Open would be the most open for two decades.

Nadal turned down a wildcard offer for a Challenger tournament in Bordeaux next week as he tried to win his race &nbsp;to make Roland Garros.

He has competed at the tournament in France every year since 2005, which was the first time he won it. The current world number 14, who turns 37 in June, has only lost three times at the French Open since his debut at the tournament. In 2016, he was forced to withdraw from the tournament before the third round with a wrist injury.
Nadal has never played at the French Open without a warm-up event on clay.

The Spaniard's last match was a straight-sets defeat by American player Mackenzie McDonald in the second round of the Australian open.

The veteran pulled out of hard-court tournaments in the US in March, aiming to make the start of the clay court season, but his injury recovery did not progress as planned.
Earlier in May, Nadal said his injury situation had improved with a new treatment, but not sufficiently to be able to play in Rome this week.

Physical problems have dogged Nadal through his glittering career and there are fears they may soon bring it to an end.

Veteran Rafael Nadal set to reveal decision on French Open amid injury concerns

Elena Rybakina has comfortably won both her matches against Iga Swiatek this year but expects a tougher test against the world number one when the pair face off on clay at the Italian Open later on Wednesday. Rybakina downed Swiatek in straight sets at the Australian Open in January and ended her title defence at Indian Wells with both matches played on hardcourts, where the Wimbledon champion used her booming serve and groundstrokes to good effect.

But the Kazakh said French Open champion Swiatek would be a completely different prospect in the Rome quarter-final. "I think clay changes it a lot," Rybakina said. "It's more rallies, it's more physical, she has more time, I have more time. It's much different than the hardcourts for sure. "I'm not expecting much. It's a practice. I'm taking it this way. Hopefully, it'll help me perform at the French Open."

Rybakina said she was not dwelling too much on the pair's budding rivalry. "But of course, I see some comments," Rybakina said. "It's good if fans think that way and that it's entertaining to see us play against each other."

Poland's Swiatek, who won her first match with Rybakina in Ostrava two years ago, said she would treat their latest meeting like any other match. "For now I don't have any mindset," defending Rome champion Swiatek said. "It's neutral. Coming back to my previous matches against Elena, it doesn't make sense. It was on hardcourts. "I know how I felt. This time I don't have any expectations. I'm just going to come out and play the best game possible."

Tennis: Elena Rybakina, Iga Swiatek to renew rivalry in Italian Open quarter-finals

Carlos&nbsp;Alcaraz&nbsp;slumped to a third round defeat at the Italian Open by unheralded Hungarian Fabian Marozsan on Monday, just two weeks before he heads into the French Open as top seed.

The 20-year-old Spaniard, who is guaranteed to replace Novak Djokovic as world number one on May 22, had come into the tournament in Rome on the back of wins in Barcelona and Madrid.

But the US Open champion was outplayed by 23-year-old Marozsan, losing 6-3, 7-6 (7/4).

Marozsan, who is ranked 135th in the world, won the final six points of the second-set tie-break to give&nbsp;Alcaraz&nbsp;a wake-up call with the French Open starting in less than a fortnight.

Alcaraz, who was second seed in Rome but in Paris will be top seed at a Grand Slam for the first time, said he required some sustained training to beef up his French Open preparations with the clay-court major beginning on May 28.

"I'm going to rest a little bit, some&nbsp;days off for me," he said. "I really need some days to reset my mind and be&nbsp;fresh for Roland Garros.

"If I want&nbsp;to go to Paris in good shape, I have to practise, to be&nbsp;better. I've been playing so much that I couldn't practise more than three, four days in a row.

"It's going to be really helpful for me to have days at home&nbsp;practising and getting ready to go to Roland Garros."

He admitted he was outplayed by his Hungarian opponent.

"He&nbsp;surprised me a lot,&nbsp;his level was really, really high. I'm sure he's going to break the top 100 very, very soon."

Marozsan, who next plays Borna Coric for a place in the quarter-finals, had not won a match on the ATP Tour prior to the tournament -- indeed this is the first time he has qualified for the main draw at a tournament on the Tour.&nbsp;

"Everything was perfect today, I was doing my job," the winner said. "I cannot imagine this win, even if it was my dream last night.

"I thought I might win a few games or a set."

Marozsan produced 24 winners in a victory which took an hour and three quarters.&nbsp;

"I had hoped I could do something special," he said. "Now I've just beaten the&nbsp;best in the sport so I'm very happy."

Alcaraz&nbsp;now stands 30-3 for the season.

<h2>Medvedev reaches last 16</h2>

Third seed Daniil Medvedev needed a fightback to defeat Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, with the winner producing his best career effort at the tournament by reaching the last 16.

It will be the first time since 1994 that no Spaniard has made it to the fourth round at the Foro Italico.

"This was my third win on clay from a set down," five-time Masters 1000 champion Medvedev said. "I managed to play better -- I'm definitely happy with my level.

"I'm playing my best tennis on clay -- I've never played so well in Rome and I'm feeling great."

Sixth seed Andrey Rublev defeated Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 7-6 (10/8), 6-3.

Three men's matches were left incomplete by evening rain, while two women's ties were delayed.

Women's world number one Iga Swiatek, the reigning Italian and French Open champion, will now face Donna Vekic in their last-16 match on Tuesday.

Fifth seed and 2022 finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas led Italian Lorenzo Sonego 6-3 when the rain came, Lorenzo Musetti led 12th seed Frances Tiafoe 5-7, 6-4, 2-1 and Alexander Zverev was 6-4, 3-3 in front of JJ Wolf.

Wimbledon champion and women's seventh seed Elena Rybakina reached the quarter-finals by beating Marketa Vondrousova 6-3, 6-3.

World no. 2 Carlos Alcaraz crashes out of Rome Masters

With not even a week left for the commencement of the French Open 2023 edition, Australian star Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from the upcoming edition due to the same knee injury that kept him out of the Australian Open early this year, in January. Kyrgios is yet to make his debut in the 2023 season. He had undergone surgery in January for a knee injury and was out of action from all the&nbsp;three ATP 1000 clay-court events prior to the Roland Garros.

"It's not looking likely. We are trying everything we can to have Nick ready on court as soon as possible," Kyrgios's agent Daniel Horsfall said earlier on Tuesday. This comes as a huge blow to the organisers as the Aussie star is easily one of the top players who often make heads turn on the court. He had a stellar run in the 2022 season where he also reached his first-ever Grand Slam final, during Wimbledon 2022.

Meanwhile, defending champion Rafael Nadal's fitness update is keenly awaited as the 14-time French Open winner has been out of action for quite long due to his hip injury, forcing him to miss the Indian Wells, Italian Open and Madrid Open.&nbsp;

Increase in prize money in French Open

Ahead of this year's French Open, the organisers revealed of increasing the prize money; with an increase of 12.3 percent from last year's edition.&nbsp;There has been a considerable hike in the prize money for first-round losers in the women's and men's singles draws, amounts awarded in the qualifying, wheelchair tennis and quad competitions.

Overall, the prize money for the singles draws is set to witness a rise of 9.1 percent whereas the losers in the first three rounds will also walk away with 11 to 13 percent more.&nbsp;

Novak Djokovic said his rivalries with Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal and Andy Murray had helped him become stronger in the face of adversity, after the world number one battled his way into the last 16 of the Italian Open. The 35-year-old Serb was a set and a break up in Sunday's match with Grigor Dimitrov but was then dragged into a decider, where he raised his level again to close out a 6-3 4-6 6-1 win after more than two hours.

"Luckily for me, in my career, I managed to win more matches than I lost when I was facing difficult circumstances," Djokovic said. "For a few years, whenever I needed to make that final step or win a Grand Slam, I didn't manage to do that, so I learned a lot. "I got stronger because of the rivalries, particularly with Federer, Nadal and Murray," he added.

Djokovic, Federer, Nadal and Murray were dubbed the 'Big Four' as they won a combined 67 Grand Slam titles in an unprecedented period of dominance and were involved in some of the most memorable matches over the last two decades.

"Staying the course, staying patient and believing in the process and the journey," Djokovic said. "Understanding what works for you best, what's your winning formula mentally and also physically and emotionally, and then sticking to it." Djokovic, who is gunning for a men's record 23rd major title at the French Open starting later this month, will face Briton Cameron Norrie on Tuesday for a place in the Rome quarter-finals.

Tennis: French Open announces 12.3 per cent increase in total prize money for 2023 edition

The Madrid Open concluded on May 07 (Sunday) with&nbsp;Carlos Alcaraz and&nbsp;Aryna Sabalenka winning the singles title (in men&nbsp;and women&nbsp;category, respectively). On the other hand, Victoria Azarenka and Beatriz Haddad Maia won the women's doubles whereas&nbsp;Karen Khachanov and Andrey Rublev clinched the title in the men's category. However, the event made heads turn for quite a lot of wrong reasons.

The tournament has been thrashed left, right, and centre for its unsavoury treatment of&nbsp;female players. From silencing the women&nbsp;finalists, and 'sexist' ball girl&nbsp;outfits to contrasting birthday cakes presented to Alcaraz and Sabalenka, many strange decisions taken by the organisers left tennis fans fuming.&nbsp;

Silencing women finalists

American duo Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff conceded the women's doubles final to Victoria Azarenka and Beatriz Haddad Maia, losing&nbsp;1-6, 4-6. To the surprise of many,&nbsp;none of the players were allowed to address the audience. However, the same was not the case for the men's doubles finalists.

"What happened in Madrid, it was really disappointing ... I had a feeling something was going to happen," Pegula told reporters, on Tuesday (May 9), prior to the commencement of the ongoing&nbsp;Italian Open.

"Did I think we were not going to be able to speak? No. I've never heard of that ... in my life. I don't know what century everyone was living in when they made that decision," the world number three Pegula added.

Meanwhile, BBC Sport quoted organisers as saying of the decision: "The tournament will not comment on the matter."

The 19-year-old Gauff highlighted, "I have a lot of finals, so it's not about that," she told reporters. "It's more about the principle behind it, so this can't happen again for future girls, take the opportunity away from them."

Sexist ballgirl outfits

Moreover, the organisers were severely criticised&nbsp;for dressing the ball girls on the main court in crop tops and short skirts. After the backlash, the skirts were swapped for long shorts ahead of the men's singles final, on&nbsp;Sunday, however,&nbsp;the crop tops remained as is.

Pilar Calvo, spokesperson for The Association for Women in Professional Sports, told Spanish outlet Público, “It’s a feminized way of treating girls versus guys who don’t dress like that. In the end, it is a form of sexist violence that is so widespread because people don’t even notice it."

Cake gate

Not only this, birthday cakes presented to Alcaraz and Sabalenka also drew criticism on social media platforms. A&nbsp;fan posted two photos on Twitter indicating the difference in size of the birthday cakes given to Alcaraz and Sabalenka. The two&nbsp;share a birthday on May 5.

Madrid Open sexism row: From silencing women finalists, cake gate to controversial ball girl outfits

Sofia Kenin was made to work hard by Cristina Bucsa at the Italian Open on Tuesday, before the former Australian Open champion prevailed 6-3 6-7(8) 7-5 to set up a second round meeting with world number two Aryna Sabalenka.

American Kenin, who was once ranked number four but has slipped to 134 in the world following her 2020 Melbourne Park triumph due to illness and injuries, was far from her best but managed to get past Bucsa in a little over three hours.

"It was obviously tough, but I was able to somehow get through. I didn't feel a 100% but it doesn't matter, a win is a win and I'm going to take it," said Kenin, who converted seven of her 21 breakpoints. "It could have gone either way and it was a matter of who could be mentally strong. I felt tired and... after three hours I'd imagine that she was too, so I just had to battle it out."

Former U.S. Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez was beaten 7-6(4) 4-6 6-3 by Aliaksandra Sasnovich, while 2019 French Open runner-up Marketa Vondrousova overcame Kaia Kanepi 6-0 4-6 6-2 in other first round matches.

Earlier, former doubles world number one Barbora Strycova downed Maryna Zanevska 6-1 3-6 6-3 for her first singles victory since 2020 following her return to the WTA tour at last week's Madrid Open from a two-year maternity break.

Tennis: Carlos Alcaraz on the verge of becoming world no. 1 after defending Madrid Open title

Rafael Nadal has been out of action for quite some time. He is nursing a hip injury which has already kept him out of many tournaments, including the just-concluded Miami Open in the run-up to this year's French Open. The Roland Garros 2023 is just a few weeks away and the Spaniard is running against time to recover fully from his hip injury. Ahead of the French Open, Nadal's longtime rival and good friend Roger Federer feels 'it will be brutal for tennis' if the 14-time French Open champion does not turn up for the showpiece event in Paris, France.

"It would be brutal, it would be tough for&nbsp;tennis&nbsp;if Rafa isn't going to be there," Federer, a 20-time Grand Slam winner, told Sky Sports on Sunday (May 07) at Formula One's Miami Grand Prix. He further asserted, "I still hope so, I saw he pulled out of Rome so I wish him the best."

Federer added, "Obviously Novak (Djokovic) hasn't been playing that much so I hope he's going to be strong as well and then all the young guys coming through as well." The former world number one retired from tennis last year in mid-September.

In April, Nadal, the 22-time Grand Slam winner, took to his official Twitter handle to share a video where he announced, "Hello everyone. It's been a while since I communicated directly with you. It has been a difficult few weeks and months. As you know I suffered a major injury in Australia, at the Psoas. Initially it had to be a six to eight week recovery period and we are now on fourteen. The reality is that the situation is not what we would have expected. All medical indications have been followed, but the evolution has not been what they initially told us."

"We find ourselves in a difficult situation. The weeks are passing and I had the illusion of being able to play in tournaments that are the most important in my career such as Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Madrid, Rome, Roland Garros and for the moment I have missed Monte Carlo and Barcelona. I will not be able to be in Madrid unfortunately. The injury still hasn't healed and I can't work out what I need to to compete. I was training, but now a few days ago we decided to change course a bit, do another treatment and see if things improve to try to get to what comes next. I can't give deadlines because if I knew I would tell you but I don't know. This is how things are now."

Nadal added, "I also want to send a special greeting to all the Madrid and Spanish public because I will have missed the two tournaments that are played here at home. You all know what it means for me to play these tournaments and specifically Madrid that I will not be able to play it with everything it has given me. I have no choice but to try to have the right attitude throughout this time, try to give myself the opportunity to compete in one of the tournaments that remains of the clay season and I have no choice but to work and be with the right mentality.

A very strong hug to all and as soon as I have news, I will inform you. Thank you!", the world number 14 signed off.

While Nadal isn't officially out of the upcoming Roland Garros, he is certainly running against time to recover before the commencement of this year's French Open. The mega event kicks off on May 22.

Tennis: It would be brutal for tennis if Rafael Nadal misses French Open 2023, says Roger Federer

World number two Aryna Sabalenka played a superb attacking game to beat Iga Swiatek in the Madrid Open final on Saturday for her first win on clay against her top-ranked rival.

The Belarusian prevailed 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to capture the title in the Spanish capital for the second time.

Until Saturday, the 25-year-old had lost all of her three previous meetings with the Pole on clay without even winning a set.

"It's something unbelievable. I'm really happy that I'm able to fight against her and I'm able to get this win so it's not like so super boring for people to watch our matches," said the champion.

"I really enjoy playing on clay, because I have extra time. It's not super fast, so I can go for my powerful shots. There are longer rallies. It's like not just bomb, bomb."

The big-hitting Belarusian gained revenge for defeat by her Polish rival in the Stuttgart final a fortnight ago with a thrilling triumph to end Swiatek's nine-match winning streak ahead of her French Open defence.&nbsp;

Two-time Roland Garros winner Swiatek fought her way back into the match after an explosive start by Sabalenka, but the second seed came back strongly in the third set to win the first WTA 1000 final featuring the top two ranked players since 2014.

Sabalenka earned her 13th career title, and only her second on clay in two hours and 25 minutes, clinching victory on her fourth championship point with a forehand cross-court winner.

"I'm just super happy with this win, especially against Iga on the clay, it's always tough matches against her," added Sabalenka.

The Australian Open champion started with great intensity in her serve and forehand, given some extra zip because of the altitude -- Madrid is the second highest European capital city.

Sabalenka earned two break points but sought a winner too keenly to convert and Swiatek held for 3-3.&nbsp;

She did the same again on Swiatek's next service but this time earned the break for a 5-3 lead when the top seed sent a backhand long.

The 2021 Madrid victor consolidated to clinch the first set, her first ever against Swiatek on the dirt, having lost in straight sets in their three previous clay clashes.

<h2>'No fun at 1am'</h2>

Swiatek, who failed to earn a single break point in the opening set to Sabalenka's four, converted her first for a 2-0 lead in the second set as her opponent pushed a return into the net.

The world number one consolidated it to love, showing a flash of her usual prowess on clay.

However at 3-1 down, the relentless Sabalenka earned four break points, getting back on serve with a beefy backhand winner down the line.

The Belarusian consolidated and again put Swiatek under the cosh on her serve, but the Pole dug deep and saved two break points to hold.

Swiatek showed her fine defensive game as she broke again for 5-3 and served it out to force the decisive third set.

Sabalenka broke for a 2-0 advantage as Swiatek went a fraction long, and saved a break point with a vicious forehand and another after that to consolidate.

Swiatek broke back but Sabalenka did it again for a 5-3 lead and, after missing three championship points as the 21-year-old battled until the end, eventually triumphed.

"Sometimes it's tougher; sometimes it's easier. That's why we have variety in tennis, and that's why sometimes players are playing better on some surfaces and some on different," said Swiatek.

The world number one aimed a jab at the tournament organisers for some of the late nights over the past week, with matches regularly finishing in the early hours.

"It's not fun to play at 1am though," she added. "I'm happy anyway I was able to get past this experience and survive and be in the final."

In the men's final on Sunday home favourite and world number two Carlos Alcaraz is aiming to defend his title against German lucky loser Jan-Lennard Struff.

Tennis: Aryna Sabalenka beats Iga Swiatek to win Madrid Open title

Rafael&nbsp;Nadal&nbsp;on Friday withdrew from next week's Rome tournament, casting serious doubts over his fitness for the French Open as well as potential questions over the rest of his career.

The 22-time Grand Slam winner has not played since suffering a hip injury at the Australian Open in January.

In all, he has competed in just four matches in 2023, winning only once.

The French Open, which the 36-year-old has won on a record 14 occasions, starts in Paris on May 28.

Nadal&nbsp;said his injury situation has improved in the past few days but not sufficiently to be able to compete next week in the Italian capital where he has been champion 10 times.&nbsp;

"You all know how much it hurts me to miss another of the tournaments that have marked my professional and personal career," wrote&nbsp;Nadal&nbsp;on Instagram.

<h2>'No choice'</h2>

"Although I have noticed an improvement in the last few days, it has been many months without being able to train at a high level and the process of readjustment takes a certain amount of time, and I have no choice but to accept that and continue working."

The 22-time major winner -- he shares the men's record with Novak Djokovic -- had originally thought he would be out for up to two months.

He pulled out of hard-court tournaments at Indian Wells and Miami, with his sights set on a return at the start of the clay-court season, but it did not come to fruition.&nbsp;

Nadal&nbsp;had to withdraw from Monte Carlo, Barcelona and Madrid, before eventually adding Rome, the final French Open warm-up event, to the list.

World number two Carlos Alcaraz said he hoped his compatriot would return to compete at Ronald Garros at his best level.

"It's a shame to see Rafa miss the tournaments and the clay court tour, which is the most special to him," Alcaraz told a news conference Friday, after reaching the Madrid Open final.

"Health comes first and if he's decided not to go to Rome, he will have seen that he was not ready.

"I hope to see him at Roland Garros 100 percent. The world wants to see him at 100 percent."

Nadal&nbsp;has been plagued by a succession of problems with his ankles, knees, elbow, wrists and now his hip which has also contributed to him losing his spot in the world top 10 for the first time in 18 years.

In his career, which has stretched over 20 years, the Spaniard has missed 11 Grand Slams and withdrew mid-tournament at the majors five times.

When&nbsp;Nadal&nbsp;claimed a 14th French Open by thrashing Casper Ruud in the 2022 final, he revealed he had required daily pain-killing injections in his foot just to see out the two-week event.

He then underwent a radical surgical procedure, having the nerves burned in his foot to eradicate the pain.

Nadal&nbsp;then swept into the Wimbledon semi-finals but an eagerly-anticipated showdown with Nick Kyrgios was shelved after the Spaniard failed to recover from an abdominal strain.

Fast forward to this year's Australian Open where he was hampered by a hip problem during his shock second-round loss to Mackenzie McDonald.

It was his earliest exit from a Slam since 2016.&nbsp;

For&nbsp;Nadal, it was familiar territory.

A left foot problem caused him to miss Wimbledon, the US Open and the Olympics in Tokyo in 2021 and&nbsp;Nadal&nbsp;did not return until the build-up to the 2022 Australian Open, which he went on to win for the second time, 13 years after his first.

But after losing to Taylor Fritz in the Indian Wells final, the Spaniard had to skip the start of the clay-court season in Monte Carlo and Barcelona with a rib stress fracture.

<h2>'It hurts always'</h2>

Many pundits consistently predicted&nbsp;Nadal&nbsp;would struggle to enjoy a long career due to his gruelling style of play but he proved them wrong time and again.

His first injury-enforced absence came as a 16-year-old in 2003 when he hurt his elbow in a fall during training and had to miss the French Open.

He has been forced to sit out at least one tournament in every year of his career.

Despite missing so many events,&nbsp;Nadal's will to win has still seen him lift 92 titles and win 1,068 matches on tour.

"It hurts as always," said&nbsp;Nadal&nbsp;after his defeat to McDonald in Australia.

"But in the end, the glass is getting fuller," he added in Spanish, a phrase that means getting fed up or reaching your limit.

Tennis: Rafael Nadal out of Rome Masters due to injury

Top-ranked Iga Swiatek cruised past Veronika Kudermetova 6-1 6-1 in the late semi-final of the Madrid Open on Thursday to set up a second straight final showdown with world number two Aryna Sabalenka. Swiatek had beaten Sabalenka 6-3 6-4 to win the Stuttgart Open at the end of April, gearing up for her French Open title defence later in May.

The Pole marched into her maiden final in Madrid in a clinical display against the 12th seed Kudermetova, improving her head-to-head record against the Russian to 4-0. Earlier on Thursday, Sabalenka brushed past Maria Sakkari 6-4 6-1 as their ninth meeting on tour and first on clay ended with the 24-year-old Belarusian extending her win-loss record over the Greek ninth seed to 6-3.

Sabalenka, who was champion in Madrid in 2021, stayed on track for her second title of the season in style after winning the Australian Open in January. She won an impressive 70.7% of her first serve points and saved five of six break points while sending down four aces against Sakkari.

It will be the third time in the last 40 years that the world top two will meet twice in the same season on clay after Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova in 2013, and Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert back in 1984.

TSITSIPAS KNOCKED OUT

In men's singles, world number five Stefanos Tsitsipas crashed out following a 7-6(5) 5-7 6-3 defeat by Germany's lucky loser Jan-Lennard Struff in the quarter-finals. In-form Struff will next face qualifier Aslan Karatsev on Friday as both reached their first Masters 1000 semi-final, the Russian doing so by beating China's Zhang Zhizhen 7-6(3) 6-4 earlier on Thursday.

In the other semi-final, world number two Carlos Alcaraz will be looking to celebrate his 20th birthday with a win against Croatian 17th seed Borna Coric.

Tennis: Iga Swiatek sets up Madrid final with Aryna Sabalenka, Stefanos Tsitsipas bows out

Nick Kyrgios said he had not slept much this week and was "battling a little" after police accused a man of threatening the player's mother with a firearm and allegedly stealing a Tesla car from her. A 32-year-old Canberra suspect appeared in ACT Magistrates Court on Tuesday to face several charges, including aggravated robbery and driving a stolen motor vehicle. He was denied bail, local media reported, citing court documents.

Carlos Alcaraz expects Rafa Nadal to perform at a "spectacular level" at the French Open if the 14-times champion can overcome his injury issues ahead of the year's second Grand Slam. Nadal skipped the ongoing Madrid Open after a setback in his recovery from a hip injury sustained at the Australian Open in January. The 22-times major champion also missed tournaments at Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo and Barcelona.

Alcaraz has emerged as favourite for Roland Garros after victories on clay at Buenos Aires and Barcelona but the world number two said Nadal cannot be written off and hopes his fellow Spaniard will return next week in Rome. "Hopefully he will be in Rome and then at Roland Garros, where he will be a rival to beat," Alcaraz told reporters after beating Alexander Zverev 6-1 6-2 on Tuesday to reach the Madrid quarter-finals.

"Although he hasn't played since Australia, a man who has won a tournament 14 times will always be difficult to beat in that tournament, even if he comes without match rhythm. "It'll also be difficult for him,&nbsp;tennis&nbsp;requires that competitive rhythm, but Rafa is Rafa, even if he arrives without many matches, he'll surely show a spectacular level."

Alcaraz, who turns 20 on Friday, said reports of Nadal's return were encouraging as he hoped to continue learning from the 36-year-old. "I say this as a player and as a&nbsp;tennis&nbsp;lover," Alcaraz said. "It's been a pity all these months where we haven't been able to see him in tournaments."

Australian police have charged a man with armed robbery and accused him of threatening&nbsp;Nick&nbsp;Kyrgios' mother at gunpoint before stealing the Australian tennis player's car, local media reported on Tuesday. The 32-year-old Canberra suspect appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court on Tuesday to face five charges, including failure to stop for police and driving while suspended, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) said, citing court documents.

He was denied bail. An ACT policing statement on Monday said police had received a report that a man had threatened a woman with a firearm and allegedly stolen a car. The statement said police formed a cordon to intercept the man. He was arrested in Canberra and the vehicle was recovered about 9:05 a.m. on Monday, about half an hour after the alleged offence began.

World number two and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz on Sunday set up a Madrid Open last 16 duel with Alexander Zverev, the German rival who handed him a heartbreaking, reality-check defeat at Roland Garros last year.

Alcaraz defeated Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria 6-2, 7-5 in the Madrid third round as he continues his bid to win a 10th tour title before his 20th birthday.

The Spanish crowd-pleaser was briefly troubled when 31-year-old Dimitrov broke for a 4-2 lead in the second set.

However, that merely delayed the inevitable as Alcaraz wrapped up victory in 90 minutes, making just four unforced errors. It was his 25th win of 2023 against just two losses and a 15th victory on clay.

The 19-year-old swept past Zverev in the Madrid final in 2022 for the loss of just four games.

However, just weeks later, the German claimed a four-set victory in the French Open quarter-finals. That was Zverev's third win in the pair's four meetings.

"I really want to play that match. We played a few times, head-to-head he is up," said Alcaraz.

"I really want to show my great level here in front of my home crowd. I have great memories from last year in the final but obviously I have to be really focussed in that match.&nbsp;

He added: "I know that Sascha is a really good player, a really aggressive one with good serves. I have to show all my skills."

Two-time Madrid champion Zverev needed just 56 minutes earlier Sunday to dispose of France's Hugo Grenier 6-1, 6-0 on the back of six breaks of serve and 26 winners.

"With Carlos it will be a match-up people will look forward to," said 16th-ranked Zverev.

"We played in the final here last year, played a massive match at Roland Garros before I got injured (in the semi-final against Rafael Nadal)."

Spain's Alejandro Davidovich Fokina toppled world number seven Holger Rune 7-6 (7/1), 5-7, 7-6 (7/5).

Rune, who turned 20 on Saturday, had saved a match point in the previous round against Alexander Bublik.

But it was Davidovich Fokina who came through the tight encounter to line up a clash with Borna Coric for a place in the last eight.

World number one Iga Swiatek claimed she had endured a "tricky" afternoon despite easing to a straight-sets win over American left-hander Bernarda Pera to reach the last 16 of the women's tournament in the Spanish capital.

Swiatek, warming up for the defence of her French Open title, claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win for a sixth consecutive victory on clay this season.

<h2>'Tricky'</h2>

"I wouldn't say it was easy. Every match is tricky here," Swiatek said after her 75-minute outing.

"I'm happy that I'm getting my rhythm. Playing against a lefty is never easy... but I'm pretty happy that I was disciplined and focused."

Swiatek next faces 16th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova who came from a set down to see off Zheng Qinwen of China.

Also progressing to the fourth round was world number three Jessica Pegula, who clinched a gruelling 6-4, 7-6 (7/2) victory over Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic.

Pegula, 29, made the final in Madrid in 2022 where she lost to Ons Jabeur. She will now tackle Italy's Martina Trevisan on Monday for a quarter-final spot.

Tennis: Alcaraz beats Dimitrov to set up last 16 duel with Alexander Zverev at Madrid Open

World number five Stefanos Tsitsipas landed 39 straight first serves en route to claiming a 3-6 6-1 7-6(5) comeback win over Dominic Thiem at the Madrid Open, with the Greek crediting his focus and relaxation for his near-perfect serving performance.

Tsitsipas looked in danger of falling in his first match of the tournament on Saturday, but he found a way back into it by dominating the second set and then clinching the tie-break in the decider. The 24-year-old ended with a first serve percentage of 79%, significantly higher than the 57% he managed in his straight sets defeat to Carlos Alcaraz in last week's Barcelona Open final.

"That's fantastic, 39 is a lot," Tsitsipas said of his streak. "That's a positive mark for me. I think I just owe it all to fluidity and just being relaxed on my serve... I think it's just pure relaxation and focus."

Tsitsipas also praised former U.S. Open champion Thiem for turning the two-hour, 19-minute encounter into a physically demanding contest. Andy Murray said he hopes to play at Roland Garros for the first time since 2020 next month after crashing out in the first round of the&nbsp;Madrid&nbsp;Open&nbsp;on Thursday. The three-time Grand Slam champion has only played the French&nbsp;Open&nbsp;once since reaching the 2017 semi-finals, losing in the first round to Stan Wawrinka three years ago. But he said he could return to the Parisian clay, after losing 6-2, 7-6 (9/7) to Italian qualifier Andrea Vavassori in&nbsp;Madrid.

"I would like to play, just purely because I don't know if I'll get another opportunity to play again," Murray said on returning to the French&nbsp;Open, where he was runner-up in 2016. "Whilst I feel fit and healthy, I would like to give it a go. "I also have ambitions of competing for Wimbledon titles and that sort of stuff, and I know that sitting here today that probably doesn't sound realistic, but I do believe that that's a possibility. I obviously want to do the right thing there. "It's impossible to say what the right thing to do is, but obviously it's a Grand Slam. I would like the opportunity to play."

World number 164 Vavassori turfed out the former world number one in straight sets in the Spanish capital. Murray was also knocked out in the first round at the Monte Carlo Masters a fortnight ago, describing it as "demoralising" and "awful". "Second set started to get into it a bit more. Was playing I think a bit better, some positive signs," Murray said on Thursday. "Some of the errors are hard to explain."

Vavassori broke world number 52 Murray twice to take a 4-0 lead in the first set before serving out, with his opponent unable to force a single break point. The 27-year-old broke again for 2-1 in the second set but fired into the net to allow his opponent back in to level at 4-4, with Murray celebrating furiously. Vavassori committed a double fault at match point in the tie-break and then hit the net with another shot, before Murray saved a third match point on serve.

The Briton saved a fourth too, but the Italian clinched victory at the fifth time of asking when Murray erred badly at the net. It is the first time two-time winner Murray has fallen at the first hurdle in&nbsp;Madrid&nbsp;in 12 appearances. Earlier, Austria's Dominic Thiem beat Kyle Edmund 6-4, 6-1 to set up a second-round clash with Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Three-time Grand Slam winner Andy Murray hopes to play French Open despite early Madrid exit

Former world number one Simona Halep has called on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) to give her the chance to clear her name after she was provisionally suspended in October for failing a drugs test. The Romanian former Wimbledon and French Open champion was tested during last year's U.S. Open and both her A and B samples confirmed the presence of banned blood-booster Roxadustat.

Halep strenuously denies knowingly taking a banned substance and says she has evidence which proves low quantities of the anti-anaemia drug entered her body because of an authorised supplement that was contaminated.

In an interview with Tennis Majors, her first since learning of her failed drugs test, Halep said she has so far been denied her right to be heard by an independent court.

"I didn't want to get out and talk because it was very emotional," Halep, who at the time described her failed test as the 'biggest shock of her life', told Tennis Majors. "Actually, I couldn't handle it very well. But now I feel the need to speak out loud to my supporters, my fans, and to the public because I am sure they really want to know why it's taking so long and I really felt the need to do that."

Halep says she sent evidence about the contamination to the ITF in December and hoped her case would be heard by an independent tribunal in February but that it was postponed and then a new date in March had also been put back.

"The ITF requested that the hearing on March 24th should be cancelled. I did not agree with that because as the rule says, a player that is provisionally suspended is entitled to get an expedited hearing. Everything takes so long. "I asked the ITF to lift my sanction to be able to play but they also refused it."

Halep says she has undertaken 10 tests since her positive result, with all of them coming back negative.

She now hopes to have a hearing in May but fears that may also be cancelled.

"I believe that it's not fair to spend eight months without even being judged by the Tribunal. Emotionally, the whole period has not been easy," the 31-year-old Halep said. "I'm not asking for special treatment. I just ask to be judged. How much longer is this going to take?"

Halep says she has taken heart from the support of the public and her coach Patrick Mouratoglou who she says has stood by her through every step of the process. She says she is determined to come back and challenge for major titles again.

"It made me feel stronger to come back and work harder to get back to the level that I was at before, and even higher," she said. "Until now, this is the hardest battle I've faced in my life and career. I really want to play again because I love this sport and I want to play for the big titles again."

"Actually, I couldn't handle it very well. But now I feel the need to speak out loud to my supporters, my fans, and to the public because I am sure they really want to know why it's taking so long and I really felt the need to do that." Halep says she sent evidence about the contamination to the ITF in December and hoped her case would be heard by an independent tribunal in February but that it was postponed and then a new date in March had also been put back. "The ITF requested that the hearing on March 24th should be cancelled. I did not agree with that because as the rule says, a player that is provisionally suspended is entitled to get an expedited hearing. Everything takes so long. "I asked the ITF to lift my sanction to be able to play but they also refused it." Halep says she has undertaken 10 tests since her positive result, with all of them coming back negative. How much longer is this going to take?" Halep says she has taken heart from the support of the public and her coach Patrick Mouratoglou who she says has stood by her through every step of the process. She says she is determined to come back and challenge for major titles again. "It made me feel stronger to come back and work harder to get back to the level that I was at before, and even higher," she said. "Until now, this is the hardest battle I've faced in my life and career. I really want to play again because I love this sport and I want to play for the big titles again." Roxadustat stimulates the production of red blood cells much like the prohibited substance Erythropoietin (EPO).
