It was all, you know, whatever was coming instinctively, I was feeling the moment, when I went to the pitch, because that pitch gave us this. We played on that particular pitch and we won the game, That particular ground as well. I will remember that ground forever in my life and that pitch as well. So I wanted to have a piece of it with me. Yeah, those moments are very, very special. And the place where all our dreams came true. I wanted something of it. So that was the feeling behind it."

At 34-3, India were in trouble before Kohli's 59-ball 76, Axar's 47 and Dube's vital 27 took the Men in Blue to 176-7. The video of Rohit's unusual act went viral and left many bewildered. Now, the Indian opener has reacted to the whole incident and explained why he had a bite of the Barbados pitch. Rohit stated that the ground had given them the win and he would remember it for the rest of his life. Thus, the 37-year-old -- who announced his T20I retirement shortly after India's win -- shared that he wanted to keep a piece of the track with him forever. 'I will remember that ground forever in my life and that pitch as well' After the captain's photo shoot with the T20 WC trophy, Rohit said in a video shared by BCCI, "See, those things are actually, I don't think I can describe that because nothing was scripted. So that was the feeling behind it." ‘Wanted to have a piece of it with me’: Rohit on why he had a bite of Barbados pitch after India’s T20 WC win

Rohit Sharma-led India beat England by 68 runs in the T20 World Cup 2024 semifinal, in Guyana on Thursday (June 27). In a contest which had delays due to rain and wet outfield, India rode on their captain's 57 and Suryakumar Yadav's 47 to post 171-7 before Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav dented Jos Buttler-led England's run-chase, with three wickets apiece, to take India to their third T20 WC final. They will now face South Africa in the final on Saturday (June 29) in Barbados with both teams being unbeaten so far. While there remained a lot of positives for India, Virat Kohli's struggles will keep them concerned ahead of the South Africa clash.

Kohli has had scores of 1, 4, 0, 24, 37, 0 and 9 so far in the ongoing 20-nation event, being held in West Indies and the USA. In the semifinal, he hit a massive six off Reece Topley before the pacer rattled his stumps on the very next ball to send him packing for 9 (his fifth single-digit score in this year's edition). Thus, Kohli was dejected after his dismissal and outgoing head coach Rahul Dravid consoled him in the dressing room.

DRAVID BACKS KOHLI TO GET A BIG ONE IN THE FINAL

After India's massive win, Dravid opined on Kohli's poor run of form. He said on Star Sports, "You know with Virat, the thing is, when you play a slightly high-risk brand of cricket there can be times when it doesn't come off. Even today, I thought he hit a really good 6 to set the tempo but he was just unlucky that the ball seamed a little bit more. But I love the intent, I love the way he went about doing it. It sets a good example for the group as well if he's willing to do it. And you know, for some reason, I don't want to jinx it but I think there's a big one coming up. I'm just loving his attitude and that he's committing himself on the field - I think he deserves it."

WATCH: DEJECTED Virat Kohli CONSOLED by coach Rahul Dravid after poor outing in T20 WC semifinal

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are at the fag ends of their glorious international careers. Both have been the stalwarts of Indian cricket and remain the fulcrum of the national side across formats. Ahead of India's T20 World Cup 2024 semifinal versus defending champions England, on Thursday (June 27) in Guyana, former Indian captain Kapil Dev opened up on Rohit and Kohli and pointed out the cheese and chalk nature of the superstar duo.

Rohit and Kohli have a plethora of runs for India in all forms of the game. There is a lot of difference between the two; in terms of playing style and physical appearance. While Kohli relies on fitness and speed, Rohit's lazy elegance and calm approach bodes well for the team. Kapil, in a recent event, decoded the differences between the two, saying 'Rohit doesn't jump around like Kohli and knows his limitations'.

'If Kohli can lift 150-250 kg dumbbells, doesn't mean Rohit should do the same'

In an ABP News show, the 1983 World Cup-winning captain said, "If Virat Kohli can lift 150 kg and 250kg dumbbells, that doesn't mean Rohit should do the same. It seems like Rohit knows his game very well. He plays within himself. He is not like Virat Kohli and doesn't jump around. Rohit is aware of his limitations and there is no one better than him in that respect, not even Virat."

Thus, Kapil emphasised that aggression suits Kohli whereas Rohit's calm and composed demeanour has worked wonders for him.

While South Africa and Afghanistan will lock horns in the first semifinal in Trinidad on Wednesday (June 26, local time), India and England will meet in the second semifinal on Thursday (June 27) in Guyana. The cricket fans are eagerly waiting for the two semis with one eye on the weather.

What happens if the two semis are affected by rain?

It is to be noted that there is a reserve day for the first semifinal, between the Afghans and unbeaten Aiden Markram-led South Africa. However, the second semifinal between India and England doesn't have a reserve day. However, four extra hours will be added, if need be, to determine a result. In case both the semifinals are entirely washed out, India and South Africa -- the two unbeaten teams in the ongoing 20-nation tournament -- will meet in the final for topping their respective groups in the Super 8s. Markram-led Proteas topped Group 2, comprising co-hosts West Indies, England and USA, whereas Rohit Sharma & Co. topped Group 1, which also included Australia, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

It is to be noted that the weather forecast for the India-England semifinal is not encouraging. There is high possibility of thundershowers during the high-voltage clash, having no reserve day.

T20 WC 2024: EXPLAINED! What if both semifinals wash out? Who wins in case final is also called off?

Shubman Gill has turned out to be the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) top contender to lead India in the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe, after the T20 World Cup. Gill was part of the Rohit Sharma-led India's T20 WC squad, named among the reserves, before being released. The right-hander is being considered to lead the Men in Blue in the tour of the African nation after Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav reportedly declined to take part in the tour. India will tour Zimbabwe for a five-match T20I series starting on July 6.

As per a report in the Indian Express, the decision to consider Gill as the Indian captain for the Zimbabwe tour came after Hardik and Surya's refusal to take part in the tour. Many senior players such as Rohit, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik and Surya are expected to take a break post the ongoing T20 WC, in West Indies and the USA. Hence, Gill's name came up to lead the national side in Zimbabwe, where several youngsters will also be tested.

Gill leading contender to lead India after Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav decline Zimbabwe tour: Report

Jasprit Bumrah has been in top form for Team India in the ongoing T20 World Cup, in West Indies and the USA. In the mega event, Rohit Sharma-led India are unbeaten, after six games, and Bumrah is one of the main reasons for Men in Blue's sensational run so far. In six matches, Bumrah has 10 wickets at an average of 6.5. He was the Player-of-the-Match in India's wins versus Ireland and Pakistan. Thus, West Indies legend Curtly Ambrose opened up on the Indian pacer and also made a blunt take on whether Bumrah can help India win the coveted title.

Ambrose lauded Bumrah and said on Sports Tak, "Jasprit Bumrah is a different bowler and I am his big fan. I love watching him bowl because he is unorthodox and not a traditional type of bowler who comes with a long run-up and bowls. He takes a short run-up and it looks like he is walking. Whatever he does after that has a huge impact and he has been doing a great job for Indian cricket. He can swing the ball and generate pace when he wants. So he is a very skilled bowler."

'So he cannot do anything alone'

Ambrose added, "He has the skill and ability but this is a team game. So he cannot do anything alone. If Bumrah does well and does not get the support of the other bowlers. Apart from this, if the batter does not score runs then India can lose. Therefore, this is a team game but despite this, he can play a big and important role in the victory. I believe that Rohit Sharma is a great captain and so is Virat Kohli. Apart from this, Rishabh Pant is a very dangerous player, so Team India looks like a very balanced side."

Apart from Bumrah, India have had contributions coming from Rishabh Pant, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh and the likes. Arshdeep is India's highest wicket-taker in the tournament, fourth-overall, with 12 scalps. Surya won India the game versus Afghanistan whereas Hardik was the Player-of-the-Match versus the Bangla Tigers.

India have not had impactful contributions from skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. They will hope for their two superstars to come to their very best in the Super 8 clash versus Australia on Monday (June 24) in St. Lucia. T20 WC: 'He has skill and ability but...': WI legend's take on whether Bumrah can help India win the title

Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers has urged the Indian team management to send Virat Kohli at No. 3 ahead of their Super 8 clash versus Afghanistan in the T20 World Cup. In the ongoing 20-nation tournament, in West Indies and the USA, Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue will face Afghanistan in their opening Super 8 clash at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on Thursday (June 20). Before the tie, de Villiers requested India to not open with Kohli-Rohit and drop the former to No. 3, his original spot.

Kohli has been opening the innings for India in the ongoing ICC event. Riding on the back of a successful run in IPL 2024, where he ended as the Orange Cap winner by making 741 runs for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) as an opener, Kohli was promoted up the order for India; resulting in Yashasvi Jaiswal's ouster. However, the 35-year-old only managed five runs in the three outings during the group stage of the T20 WC. Thus, ABD has reckoned that Kohli is ideal for No. 3 where he is the best in soaking pressure in the middle overs.

On his YouTube channel, De Villiers pointed out, "I have always said please bat Virat at number three. Especially in better wickets that they will play now, Virat is the go-to guy at number three. He can play the attacking game and also pull back and absorb the pressure if necessary. He is the best player in the world in the middle overs. I do not see any reasons (for opening)."

Former Pakistan wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal has backed Gautam Gambhir to become India's next head coach. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to name the next Indian coach, with Rahul Dravid's tenure set to end post the ongoing T20 World Cup, in West Indies and the USA. On Tuesday (June 19), Gambhir was interviewed by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) and is being considered as the ideal candidate to take over from Dravid. Amid all this, Kamran -- who had a verbal spat with Gambhir during their playing days -- lauded the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) mentor and feels 'whatever Gambhir touches turns into gold'.

Talking to the Times of Indoa, Kamran said, "Whatever Gambhir touches turns into gold. The team he joins becomes successful. Team India doesn't need any foreign coaches. He is the best option India have right now."

He further opined, "Gambhir was with Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and they did really well under him. He became a mentor of KKR and they became champions. T20 WC: There is keenness to do something special, says Rohit Sharma before India's 'hectic' Super 8 campaign

Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir will appear for an interview for the role of the head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team on Tuesday (June 18). The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) will be interviewing him in Mumbai today. The veteran is being considered the frontrunner to take up the job from Rahul Dravid, who will sign off from the top post after the end of the ongoing T20 World Cup in West Indies and USA. Along with Gambhir, another candidate will also be interviewed for the role of the selector.

Gambhir's name started doing the rounds, especially after Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) triumph in IPL 2024. Under Gambhir's mentorship, Shreyas Iyer-led Kolkata won their third IPL title, the first in 10 years, and the former cricketer's involvement in making strategies and team combinations was lauded by many. Since then, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly been keen on roping Gambhir to replace Dravid.

Recently, former Indian spinner Anil Kumble -- who also coached India for a year -- spoke on Gambhir's likely appointment. He told Star Sports, "You will have to give him (Gambhir) time. He certainly is capable. We have seen Gautam handle teams, he has been a captain for India, for his franchise. He has all the credentials to be that. But, Indian team coaching is slightly different. So you will have to give him time to settle in."

It will be interesting to see how Gambhir settles in with the current lot of players, given that he has also played with many of them, such as Indian captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, R Ashwin, etc.

India beat USA by seven wickets in what was a hard-fought low-scoring affair in the ongoing T20 World Cup on Wednesday (June 12). Playing at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, New York, India kept their winning run intact in the 20-nation tournament, being held in West Indies and the USA, to become the third team to proceed to the Super 8 stage. Chasing 111, India were made to work hard for every run but were awarded 5 penalty runs during the end overs. This eased their run-chase as they eventually won by seven wickets in 18.2 overs.

WHY WERE INDIA AWARDED 5 PENALTY RUNS VS USA?

It is to be noted that just before the start of the 16th over, stand-in captain Aaron Jones had a word with the umpires before USA were docked five penalty runs. Notably, the co-hosts went past 60 seconds to start a new over three times during the Indian innings. As per the new rules, it is considered a penalty. Hence, this changed the momentum of the game completely in India's favour. Before the penalty runs were awarded, India needed 35 off 30 balls but the equation changed to 30 off 30 deliveries, thanks to the new rule.

Following the penalty runs, USA's body language took a hit and they surrendered after putting up a good fight until then.

Talking about the contest, India opted to bowl first and rode on Arshdeep Singh's 4 for 9 to restrict USA at 110/7. In reply, India-born Saurabh Netravalkar's early strikes dented India as he dismissed openers Virat Kohli and captain Rohit soon. From 10/2, the Men in Blue were further reduced to 39 for 3 before an unbeaten 72-run fourth-wicket stand between Suryakumar Yadav (50 not out) and Shivam Dube (31 not out) took them home in 18.2 overs.

India will now shift their focus to the Super 8s but have a final group stage game remaining, versus Canada on Saturday (June 15) in Florida.

Team India is gearing up for their T20 World Cup opener versus Ireland, on Wednesday (June 5) in New York. The one-time winners are preparing hard for a fine start and had an intense training session ahead of their clash versus the Irish clash. Virat Kohli, who missed India's sole warm-up match versus Bangladesh, headlined the Men in Blue's practice session where he batted for close to 40 minutes as the national side trained for close to three hours, at the Nassau County Cricket Ground on Monday evening.

Kohli was up against the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Yuzvendra Chahal during his 40-minute batting session. The right-hander took time to get going, as he assessed the conditions, before playing his shots. Kohli judged the bounce on the training pitches, being fully well that the Nassau County Cricket Stadium has aided the fast bowlers so far in the 20-team tournament. T20 WC: Virat Kohli headlines India's intense training session ahead of Ireland clash - Watch

Virat Kohli recently recalled his World Cup debut in 2011, where he scored a magnificent 100 in India's face-off versus Bangladesh in what was the 50-over mega event's tournament opener. Ahead of India's T20 World Cup 2024 warm-up game versus Bangladesh on June 1 in New York, Kohli spoke about his WC debut, which came during his second year in international cricket. On Feb 19, India faced Bangladesh in the 2011 ODI WC opener, in Mirpur, where the then MS Dhoni-led India rode on Virender Sehwag's 175 and Kohli's 100* to post 370-4 and later won by 87 runs.

In a recent interaction on Star Sports, Kohli admitted that he had butterflies in his stomach ahead of his WC debut. He got a chance to play alongside Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Sehwag, Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh and the likes and, thus, was nervous.

Kohli said, "It was (World Cup debut) against Bangladesh in Dhaka (in Mirpur), my first game and I was nervous. Yes, I will not lie. There is a different sense of excitement in the air when you come for a World Cup and I could obviously sense that. I was the youngest member of that team and I was getting to play with all these greats of Indian cricket in a World Cup game."

'Nervousness helped me to be aware and alert'

The former Indian captain further added, "For me it was definitely a moment where I was a bit nervous heading into the game and definitely the night before I was quite nervous but that is a good sign as well because your body is preparing you to enter a situation where you’re alert, you’re not taking things for granted. I think that nervousness helped me to be aware, be alert and be absolutely precise in the execution of my plans."

Kohli had a memorable outing where he slammed an unbeaten 100 off 83 balls (8 fours and 2 sixes) and was also involved in a mammoth 203-run third-wicket stand with Player-of-the-Match Sehwag (whose 175 was laced with 14 fours and 4 sixes). As a result, India stormed past the Bangla Tigers and later went onto win the 2011 edition, co-hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, by beating the Lankans in the final at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

Since then, Kohli hasn't looked behind and been India's go-to-man in ODI WCs. He has 1,795 runs (second-most) in 37 games at an average of 59.83 with 5 centuries. He ended the 2023 edition, held in India, with most runs by a batter in a single edition (765). Even in T20 WC history, he is the leading run-getter with 1,141 runs starting from 2012-22.

Talking about India's upcoming T20 WC campaign, in West Indies and USA, Kohli's form will be crucial for Rohit Sharma & Co. India will begin their campaign on June 5 versus Ireland in New York. They are placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, USA, Ireland and Canada.

Virat Kohli's childhood coach Rajkumar Sharma has picked MS Dhoni as India's next head coach. The current head coach Rahul Dravid's tenure is about to end following the 2024 T20 World Cup, in the West Indies and the USA in June. The official deadline to apply for the top post was May 27. While some big foreign names distanced themselves from taking the top job, it is highly likely that an Indian will take over from Dravid. Reports have indicated that Gautam Gambhir is being looked upon as a strong candidate, however, Kohli's coach has suggested Dhoni's name should he retire from IPL.

Talking on India News' programme CRICIT PREDICTA, Sharma said, "First of all, it will be interesting to see which names apply for this post. I would like that whoever becomes the coach should be an Indian. If Mahendra Singh Dhoni announces retirement, he can prove to be a good option. He (Dhoni) has played a lot of cricket and has won big tournaments."

Sharma added, "Dhoni will have more respect in the dressing room and he has played this format for a long time. Being able to plan for the team and manage it properly, is most needed in the team because when Dhoni became the captain, there were big players in that team like Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Harbhajan Singh, Anil Kumble, Gautam Gambhir, and Yuvraj Singh were present. Despite this, Dhoni handled the team brilliantly."

While the legendary Indian cricketer remains mum on his IPL future, many believe he has played his last IPL season and will announce retirement before the mega auction, for the 2025 season, later this year.

MS Dhoni to be India head coach? Virat Kohli’s coach suggests him as contender

Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa has lauded Shreyas Iyer after the latter led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to IPL 2024 win. In the final, held in Chennai on Sunday (May 26), KKR beat Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by eight wickets while chasing 114. With this, KKR won their third IPL title, first after 2014. With this win, many have lauded Iyer for his captaincy and the way he managed the big players of KKR such as Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, Mitchell Starc, etc. After the finale, former Indian cricketer, and two-time IPL winner, Robin Uthappa made a big claim, saying Iyer can be the next Indian captain.

'Shreyas Iyer has got the character and wherewithal to handle a team'

Uthappa said on Jio Cinema, "I am going to say it here. He is going to be the future India captain. I think he is next in line, maybe even ahead of Shubman Gill. He has got the character and wherewithal to handle a team. I think there’s a lot he has learnt this season. You have got to understand that he was working with Gautam Gambhir, Chandrkant Pandit and Abhishek Nayar – three very strong personalities."

"You have to navigate your way through these strong personalities throughout the season while having your way, and learning on the run. That’s not easy to navigate through an entire IPL season while performing, giving your best and making the right calls. He has done that with utter dominance. That tells you a lot about his character and what he believes he is capable of. I think because of that, he sets himself up in the right space to be in the conversation for the next Indian captain," Uthappa further added.

Iyer hasn't got anything easily in recent times. He was India's third-best batter in the ODI World Cup, at home, last year. The right-hander ended with 530 runs in the mega event, at an average of 66.25 and a strike-rate of 113.24. However, he soon got sidelined due to back issues -- which has caused him to miss many international games in the past -- and then lost his BCCI contract prior to IPL 2024. Iyer started this year's IPL with injury scares but that didn't deter his confidence as he ended with useful contributions with the bat, managing 351 runs, and marshalled his troops brilliantly from the word go.

Uthappa was all praise for Iyer for his fighting spirit and resistance. In this regard, he said, "Even after going through a lot, the back injury, the World Cup snub, not getting a central contract – a lot of conjecture about what was happening with him. He barely spoke about it, I think just before the final, he touched upon it. I think that goes to show he has got his sight clear on what he is going to do for himself and the teams he plays for. I think it’s just the beginning of the leader that we are going to see Shreyas Iyer is going to be."

After the win in the final, Iyer said at the post-match presentation, "We played like invincibles throughout the season. There's so much to cherish right now. It is pleasing, the performance has been flawless throughout. I am running out of words right now. We have been tremendous from game one, we stepped up today. All we demanded from ourselves was to back each other whatever the situation is."

Iyer isn't part of India's T20 World Cup 2024 squad. However, he has made a big statement by becoming an IPL-winning captain. The 29-year-old has made the right noise to be considered as a future Indian captain, post the Rohit Sharma-era.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is in search of Rahul Dravid's successor as India's head coach is up for grabs. The former Indian captain's extended contract ends in June. The last date for applying for the top post is May 27. Hence, the board has reportedly approached several big names such as Stephen Fleming, Gautam Gambhir, Ricky Ponting, Justin Langer, etc. to come on board. However, many are declining the offer, mainly due to India's hectic schedule and the pressure involved with the job.

Langer, who coached Australia from 2018-2022, recently confirmed that he will not be applying for the job. The former Aussie opener, who joined Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) as their head coach for IPL 2024, declined the prospect of being the next India coach as he feels the job isn't for him at the moment. Further, he revealed that chat with KL Rahul, the LSG captain, also helped his decision as he understood the complexity of the job.
