Former New Zealand all-rounder Scott Styris made a big claim about Suryakumar Yadav as India's T20I captain. Surya was recently promoted as the T20I captain after he pipped Hardik Pandya for the top job with new head coach Gautam Gambhir and BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar citing fitness issues for the latter. Under Surya, India have already won the ongoing three T20Is versus hosts Sri Lanka, with an unassailable 2-0 lead following an easy win in the second game. However, Styris feels the dashing batter is a 'short-term option' as Gambhir hasn't got a 'natural captain' to work with at present.

Styris told India Today, "I think he's a short-term option. I don't think Gambhir has a natural captain amongst the players that he has right now. He's buying himself time as to who will be the next long-term captain."

The New Zealander, however, lauded the team management for naming Shubman Gill as the white-ball vice-captain for the SL tour.
Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali opened up on Ishan Kishan's ouster from Team India setup. Kishan, who slammed a double century in ODIs in late 2022, was part of India's squad for majority of 2023 and travelled everywhere with the team before also being named in the 2023 ODI World Cup squad. However, he played only the first two games before being benched. Since then, the swashbuckling left-hander has fallen behind in the pecking order. The batter made a bold call to skip the South Africa tour in late 2023, soon after the ODI WC, due to travel fatigue. This wasn't well received by the BCCI management. Thus, Kishan was soon excluded from the central contract list and remains out-of-favour across formats to date.

In this regard, Basit opined on Kishan's ouster and said on his YouTube channel, "Ishan Kishan has fallen down the pecking order. Woh bhi thoda sa fashion mein lag gaya tha (He too got into fashion a bit)."

'He is into fashion': Former Pakistan cricketer's BIG claim on Ishan Kishan's ouster from Team India

Recently, Suryakumar Yadav pipped Hardik Pandya to become India's new T20I captain. Ahead of India's white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, which gets underway on Saturday (Jul 27), new head coach Gautam Gambhir and BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar revealed that they named Surya the new captain -- after Rohit Sharma's T20I retirement -- due to Hardik's injury concerns. Paras Mhambrey, who recently stepped down as the bowling coach of the recently-resigned Rahul Dravid-led coaching staff, has now revealed that Dravid had also considered Surya as a T20I skipper during his tenure.

Hardik served as Rohit's deputy in white-ball formats since early 2023. Many thought he was next in line to take over after Hitman called it quits from the format after India's T20 World Cup triumph last month. However, Surya got the nod ahead of Gambhir-Agarkar. Mhambrey has revealed that even Dravid had Surya in mind as the next T20I skipper.

The ex-bowling coach told HT, "First and foremost when you pick a captain, you expect the captain to play all the games in that format. We, the coaches and selectors, have always felt that here's a guy (Surya) who's gonna have a long future in the T20 format. He has mastered that skill. One of the best in this format. He and Klaasen are maybe one or two in T20Is now based on their current form. Just the pure impact he has on winning games for India is phenomenal."

He has that respect from the younger lot. The youngsters need to interact with him, he's good at it." He added, "So, has a good bond with everyone in the team. He has come up through the ranks, so he has a lot of experience and is a smart cricketer."

Thus, during Dravid's run, the Mumbai Indians (MI) batter cemented his T20I spot.

Ahead of the SL tour, Agarkar also told in a press conference that he got 'feedback from the dressing room' before naming the new T20I captain. Thus, the Dravid-led coaching staff might have also played a role in Surya's promotion.

Dravid, not Gambhir, behind Suryakumar Yadav being named T20I skipper? Here's what former coach says

After India's 2023 ODI World Cup final loss to Australia, in Ahmedabad, many felt Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have ended their run in the mega event. Many also felt they will not be a part of the 2024 T20 World Cup, in West Indies and USA. However, the duo were not only a part of the campaign but played crucial roles to help India win the title, last month in Barbados. Kohli, 35, and Rohit, 37, have managed their workload very well in the recent past, and it has helped in them scoring a bulk of runs. However, the big questions remains: can the two play until 2027 ODI WC?

'Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan will keep making runs and push you'

In this regard, former Indian pacer Ashish Nehra gave an interesting take. Talking on Sports Tak, the veteran said, "It involves both physical and mental aspects. It depends on your passion and motivation and in these aspects, there is no dearth at all when it comes to Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. It's because of their drive that they have reached where they are today. From here, young guns like Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan will keep making runs and push you. For that, you need to keep raising your bar. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have done that and shown."

Former Indian batter Robin Uthappa made a big claim on new captain-coach Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir. With Gambhir replacing Rahul Dravid as new India head coach, until 2027 ODI World Cup, all eyes are on how he takes the team forward across formats. Gambhir will be working closely with Rohit, who will continue to lead India in Tests and ODIs and work in tandem with Suryakumar Yadav, the new T20I skipper. Uthappa, who has played under Gambhir in Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), feels Rohit-Gambhir will be 'as effective' as Rohit-Dravid.

'Gambhir is someone who is always available and provides security to his group'

During a virtual interaction by Sony Sports Network, Uthappa said, "He (Gambhir) has been an incredible man manager. The narrative that is set about him as a player on social media is one that is quite 'Gambhir'. But, I think, individually, he is a thorough gentleman. He will be absolutely approachable. He is someone who is always available, he is very empathetic and he is there for his players. He looks after his players really well and he is someone who provides security for the group. 'Gambhir is someone who is always available and provides security to his group' During a virtual interaction by Sony Sports Network, Uthappa said, "He (Gambhir) has been an incredible man manager. ‘Rohit and Gautam will make...’: T20 WC winner’s big claim on new captain-coach after Dravid’s term

Former Indian opener Robin Uthappa has shared his opinion on Hardik Pandya losing T20I captaincy to Suryakumar Yadav. With Gautam Gambhir taking over from Rahul Dravid as the India head coach, his first big decision was to announce the new T20I skipper following Rohit Sharma's retirement after the 2024 T20 World Cup win. Gambhir and BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar named Suryakumar as the new captain and reasoned that they need a captain who can play all T20Is. With Hardik being injury-prone, he, thus, missed out on leading India in T20Is despite being the stand-in captain from late 2022-2023 during Rohit's sabbatical.

'If I'm 34-35 years old and I'm someone who's been injury-prone through my career...'

Recently, Uthappa -- winner of the 2007 T20 WC -- opened up and shared his take on Hardik not being appointed captain. During a virtual interaction organised by Sony Sports Network, Uthappa said, "If I were in Hardik's place, I would actually feel taken care of to a certain extent. Because within the Indian cricket ecosystem, a fast-bowling all-rounder is a very rare commodity. If I'm 34-35 years old and I'm someone who's been injury-prone through my career and a certain responsibility has been taken away from me with the mindset of extending my career and giving me the best chance to offer my services to my country for as long as possible, keeping that in view, I would actually say OK this is the best thing for me."

The former right-handed batter Uthappa pointed out, "Yes, leading India and leading a country is one of the greatest honours that any figure can ever imagine.
He further mentioned, "If you asked me between the two what I would pick as a human being, I would say, serving my country and winning as many World Cup championships, irrespective of whether I was a captain or whether I was just a player. "

Uthappa added, "Knowing Hardik Pandya on a certain level, I would say he'd be someone saying it's fine, their perspective is also right. They want a player of my quality and my caliber to be able to serve my country for as long as possible. And I would love to do that as well. I would love to do that in the white format, which I'm currently available for. I can leave whenever, whenever required. God forbid if Suryakumar Yadav has an injury. I'm available, and I'm playing a bunch of tournaments. The need ever requires I will always be available to lead my country, but I would love to serve my country in white-ball cricket."

Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Khalid Mahmood feels if BCCI denies sending Team India to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, other Asian countries like Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh could follow the same path. Due to the tense relations between India and Pakistan, the Indian Govt. might not send the team across the border for the eight-team tournament scheduled for February-March next year.

Per the latest reports, the BCCI has communicated their clear intentions to the PCB and the ICC, with the board putting out the same message during the ongoing ICC annual conference in Colombo, where the Champions Trophy venue was among the several agendas to be discussed.

Meanwhile, Mahmood said considering BCCI’s stance in world cricket and what they bring to the table, they can boss around and make things happen their way. He added that chances of India travelling to Pakistan are bleak, and if that happens and others also deny sending their teams, the PCB and the ICC could suffer massive losses regarding revenue, growth and profits.

Mohammed Shami is one of India’s best all-format bowlers and perhaps the most successful in the 50-over World Cups. However, despite star performances across the past two editions (2019 and 2023), wherein he picked 38 wickets in just 11 matches, including several five-fors and a seven-wicket haul in the semis last year, Shami questioned Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri's tactics during the 2019 edition.

Shami questions Kohli-Shastri tactics in 2019 World Cup; sounds clueless over snub from XI despite performance

Former Indian spinner Amit Mishra made heads turn with his comments on Virat Kohli in a recent interaction.
Former Indian spinner Amit Mishra predicted Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma's international retirements. During a recent interaction, Mishra -- a veteran of 22 Tests, 36 ODIs and 10 T20Is -- predicted that both Kohli and Rohit will retire 'in another 2-3 years', ruling them out of the 2027 ODI World Cup. The former spinner feels both the stalwarts will end their careers soon because if they don't, the younger crop of players might suffer.

'How else will new players get in?'

On the YouTube show 'Unplugged', Mishra said, "In another 2-3 years. Playing the World Cup [2027] looks tough. He has 3-4 years of cricket left, but for India not much. He will retire and continue playing the IPL. Same with Virat Kohli. As it should be. How else will new players get in? One is 37, the other will turn 36 soon. They'll be 38-39 in the next two years. At max, 40. That's usually how long cricketers play."

India head coach Gautam Gambhir and BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar have spoken to Hardik Pandya and informed the all-rounder about the last-minute change in T20I captaincy as Suryakumar Yadav is set to become the new skipper, as per reports. According to news agency PTI, Gambhir and Agarkar had a word with Hardik -- who has served as India's stand-in captain in the recent past and was also the vice-captain during the 2024 T20 World Cup -- that they are looking for a full-time captain, keeping in view with 2026 T20 World Cup. It is understood that Surya is being preferred over the all-rounder for the latter's frequent fitness concerns, along with a poor run as Mumbai Indians (MI) captain in IPL 2024.

A senior BCCI source told PTI on the condition of anonymity, "Hardik Pandya was India's T20 vice-captain under Rohit Sharma. He is completely fit and available for the three-match T20I series and was supposed to lead the side but there is a very strong feeling that SKY would be the potential leader not only for the Sri Lanka series but till the 2026 World Cup."

The need to look for a new T20I captain came following Rohit Sharma's retirement after India's historic 2024 T20 WC triumph in the West Indies and the USA. Even Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja announced their retirement from T20Is along with Rohit.

After Hardik, Surya's name cropped up who has led Mumbai in the domestic circuit in the past. In addition, the swashbuckling batter was also in charge of the Indian team for the home T20Is versus Australia and away series in South Africa, in late 2023.

At present, India is gearing up for the tour of Sri Lanka later this month, starting on July 27. The tour will kick off with three T20Is followed by an equal number of ODIs. The BCCI official has further confirmed that Hardik has asked for leave for the upcoming three ODIs in the island nation, citing personal reasons.

Moreover, if Rohit is unavailable for the ODI leg, KL Rahul might lead India whereas Surya can be given the reins of the T20I team, not only for the SL tour but on a permanent basis until the next T20 WC. The right-hander is India's third-highest run-getter in T20Is, with 2,340 runs in only 68 games at a strike rate of 167.74 along with four 100s.

Rohit Sharma-led India won the 2024 T20 World Cup, beating South Africa by 7 runs in an epic final at the Kensington Oval, Barbados on June 29. Opting to bat first, India rode on Virat Kohli's 76, Axar Patel's 47 and Shivam Dube's 27 to post 176/7 but Heinrich Klaasen's blazing knock (52) made it a one-sided battle with the Proteas needing just 30 off the last five overs, which was down to 27 off 28 balls. However, India's death-bowling heroics (led by Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and Arshdeep Singh) took them to a famous win, restricting Aiden Markam & Co to 169/8, as they ended their 11-year-long ICC title drought and won their second T20 WC title.

'I was completely...': Rohit Sharma recalls last overs' drama during India's T20 WC final win vs South Africa

Former Indian spinner Amit Mishra made a sensational claim, in a recent interaction, while comparing Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The wily spinner claimed that Kohli changed a lot after gaining fame and power in his career whereas Rohit, under whom India won the 2024 T20 World Cup, remains the same person. Both Kohli and Rohit debuted around the same time, with the former coming into the picture in 2008 and Hitman making his debut a year before. Kohli rose to fame much earlier and got captaincy in early 2015 when MS Dhoni retired from Tests. He became the all-format skipper in 2017 before Rohit took over the reins in early 2022 (as full-time captain).

'Why does Virat have less friends? His and Rohit's natures are different'

Mishra, a veteran of 22 Tests, 36 ODIs and 10 T20Is, played with both Kohli and Rohit and also under the former's captaincy. While speaking to YouTuber Shubhankar Mishra on his show, the ex-cricketer drew comparisons between Kohli and Rohit's nature. He revealed, "I won't lie. As a cricketer, I respect him (Kohli) a lot, but I don't share the same equation with him as I used to. Why does Virat have less friends? His and Rohit's natures are different. I'll tell you the best thing about Rohit. When I met him the first day and when I meet him today, he is the same person. So will you relate to him more or with someone who changes according to situation?"

Virat Kohli not the same after fame and power, Rohit Sharma unchanged: Former Indian spinner's BIG claim

Former Indian stumper Saba Karim suggested two names who could be India's next T20I captain. After India won the 2024 T20 World Cup, held in West Indies and the USA, captain Rohit Sharma announced his retirement, along with Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja, from the shortest format. Thus, India have now embarked upon a new era post Rohit's retirement. With India set to kickoff their white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, from July 27 under new head coach Gautam Gambhir, there are chances that the BCCI will announce India's new permanent T20I skipper.

With many names being considered, Karim named Hardik Pandya -- who acted as Rohit's deputy in the last two World Cups (both ODI and T20I) -- and Suryakumar Yadav as his top-two choices.

'Logically, Hardik Pandya should become the captain'

Talking on Sony Sports, the former Indian stumper said, "The first thing that needs to be decided is who will captain in T20Is. Rohit Sharma has retired, he won't play T20Is. So you will have a new captain. I feel there are two contenders. If we see logically, Hardik Pandya should become the captain because he was the vice-captain in the winning World Cup campaign. He also captained India in the past. I feel the preparation now should be for the next T20 World Cup which is going to happen after two years."

He further opined, "I feel the discussion should be about SKY because Suryakumar Yadav captained India in the home series against Australia. India defeated Australia there and he also batted well. So he can definitely come forward as an option."
As Hardik has been Rohit's deputy in white-ball cricket since early 2023, it is likely that the all-rounder will take over in T20Is. If you're good...: Gambhir gives sneak peek into no-nonsense approach, shares first message as India coach

VVS Laxman, the National Cricket Academy (NCA) head, is currently acting as the India head coach for the second-stringed side's ongoing Zimbabwe T20Is, in the African nation. Ahead of the fourth and penultimate tie, in Harare on Saturday (Jul 13), Laxman recalled Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's wonderful gesture where they gave the 2024 T20 World Cup trophy to outgoing head coach Rahul Dravid after India's famous triumph last month.

After India beat South Africa in the final of the recently-held 20-nation T20 WC, in West Indies and the USA, captain Rohit and Kohli gave outgoing coach Dravid the space he deserved during the celebrations. While Rohit and Kohli, along with Ravindra Jadeja, announced their T20I retirements, Dravid ended his coaching tenure with the senior team. With the end of his term, he also fulfilled his dreams of lifting a World Cup; something he failed to achieve during his playing days. Hence, Laxman lauded Rohit and Kohli's gesture towards Dravid.

'I thought it was a great gesture by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli'

"Someone like Rahul, with whom I have played so much cricket, I have known him for so many years, for him to show so much emotions, first when the last ball was bowled and the conversations he was having with various team members. When he lifted the World Cup, I thought it was a great gesture by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to hand over the trophy. And the way he celebrated lifting the trophy showed how much it meant to each one of them," VVS Laxman said in a video for the BCCI from Harare.

'I thought it was a great gesture by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli' "Someone like Rahul, with whom I have played so much cricket, I have known him for so many years, for him to show so much emotions, first when the last ball was bowled and the conversations he was having with various team members. When he lifted the World Cup, I thought it was a great gesture by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to hand over the trophy. And the way he celebrated lifting the trophy showed how much it meant to each one of them," VVS Laxman said in a video for the BCCI from Harare. How much the #T20WorldCup triumph 🏆 means to India? It showed how much it meant to each and every player of that squad. It's not only the playing XI. Even the support staff and the coaching staff, the emotions were high. You saw Hardik Pandya break down and show his emotions after bowling the last over. We saw Rohit Sharma on the ground."
Gautam Gambhir's first-ever assignment as Team India head coach will be the forthcoming India tour of Sri Lanka, starting later this month.
On Tuesday (July 9), the BCCI named Gautam Gambhir as Team India's head coach until the 2027 ODI World Cup. Gambhir will take over from India's upcoming white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, from July 27, and is set to be given his own support staff as well. His predecessor Rahul Dravid had Vikram Rathour, Paras Mhambrey and T Dilip as the batting, bowling and fielding coaches, respectively, but Gambhir will have a new support staff. Rahul Dravid DECLINES extra bonus, wants BCCI to pay all coaches EQUALLY for T20 WC triumph

On Tuesday (July 9), Indian captain Rohit Sharma shared an emotional post for outgoing head coach Rahul Dravid after India's historic T20 World Cup 2024 triumph, in West Indies and the USA. After India beat South Africa by 7 runs in the final of the 20-nation mega event, in Barbados on June 29, Dravid's coaching tenure -- which commenced in late 2021 -- came to a fitting end. For someone who never won a World Cup as a player, Dravid's dream finally got fulfilled, albeit as a coach of the senior men's team. Thus, Rohit took to his official Instagram handle to write a lengthy note, thanking Dravid for his services in a heartfelt note.

'You left all of your accolades and achievements at the door and walked in as our coach'

Rohit wrote, "Dear Rahul bhai, I have been trying to find the right words to properly express my feelings on this but I'm not sure I ever will so here's my attempt."

He further opined, "Since my childhood days I have looked up to you just like billions of others but I was lucky enough to get to work with you this closely. You are an absolute stalwart of this game but you left all of your accolades and achievements at the door and walked in as our coach and came on a level where we all felt comfortable enough to say just about anything to you. That is your gift, your humility and your love for this game even after all this time. I have learnt so much from you and every memory will be cherished. My wife refers to you as my work wife and I'm lucky to get to call you that too."

'You left all of your accolades and achievements at the door and walked in as our coach' Rohit wrote, "Dear Rahul bhai, I have been trying to find the right words to properly express my feelings on this but I'm not sure I ever will so here's my attempt." He further opined, "Since my childhood days I have looked up to you just like billions of others but I was lucky enough to get to work with you this closely. My wife refers to you as my work wife and I'm lucky to get to call you that too." 'Only thing missing...' - Rohit Sharma's FAREWELL note for outgoing coach Rahul Dravid after T20 WC win

Gautam Gambhir is expected to take over as India head coach very soon. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah had revealed that India will get their new head coach from the upcoming white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, scheduled to kickoff later this month. With Gambhir reportedly even shooting his farewell video with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) camp, where he rejoined as team mentor in late 2023, the Indian cricket board is expected to announce the big decision very soon. Gambhir and WV Raman, former Indian cricketer and women's team coach, were among the only two applicants to go through the interview process, conduced by the Cricket Advisory Council (CAC). After the interview process, Gambhir was reportedly termed as the top contender. However, many are perplexed as to what is the delay in the official announcement with Gambhir looking set to take charge.

According to The Indian Express, Gambhir and BCCI are in the "final stages of salary negotiations", which is delaying the official announcement. Notably, the BCCI keeps the options open regarding the salary of the head coach of the senior men's team. Even in the advertisement inviting applicants for the top post, It was clearly mentioned that the remuneration is "negotiable and will be commensurate with experience."

While he has no coaching experience, his overall exposure at the international level and successful mentorship roles for IPL franchises, is expected to help him draw a higher salary than the previous coach, Rahul Dravid (whose yearly remuneration was around INR 12 crore -- INR 120 million).

As per reports, BCCI is also set to give Gambhir a freehand in terms of selecting his support staff. The former Indian opener, who was the team's highest run-getter in the final of the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup, is expected to take full charge from the Sri Lanka tour, with focus on next year's Champions Trophy and the ongoing WTC cycle.

Gautam Gambhir is rumoured to take over as the Indian senior men's team coach from their upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, later this month. Ever since his name started doing the rounds for the top post, he has emerged as a strong contender to take over from Rahul Dravid (who signed off with India's T20 World Cup win in West Indies and USA on June 29). Reportedly, Gambhir recently shot a farewell video with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) camp, in Kolkata, to sign off as their mentor with talks intensifying for him to succeed Dravid.

As per a report, Gambhir arrived in Kolkata to shoot a farewell video and sign off as their mentor after only rejoining his former franchise, where he won two titles as IPL captain, in late 2023. Under Gambhir's mentorship, Shreyas Iyer-led Kolkata won their third IPL title and first since 2014 (during his captaincy days). It is to be noted that Gambhir also served as Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) mentor from 2022-23, leading them to the playoffs in both editions. We were talking after every ball and he (Ruturaj Gaikwad) said to me that you should take it on. I always believe in my ability, if there's in my arc and even if it's the first ball."

Team India Victory Parade: Mumbai crowd hails Rohit Sharma & Co as champions return home in grand ceremony

During Team India's felicitation ceremony at the Wankhede Stadium, on Thursday (July 4), Virat Kohli was in awe of Jasprit Bumrah and asked the crowd to give him a special round of applause for his T20 World Cup 2024 heroics. In the mega 20-nation event, in West Indies and the USA, Rohit Sharma-led India remained unbeaten and beat South Africa, by 7 runs, in the mega final in Barbados on June 29. Bumrah ended with the Player-of-the-Tournament award, claiming 15 wickets (third-most) at 4.17 and an economy rate of 8.26. His death-bowling masterclass versus the Proteas helped India claw their way back into the final and eventually emerge on top.

Kohli recalled Bumrah's exceptional end-overs spell in the final, where he conceded just 6 runs in his last two overs, and stated, "You know what I'd like everyone to do is applaud a guy who brought us back into games again and again and again in this tournament. What he did in those last five overs, bowling two out of the last five overs, it was phenomenal. A huge round of applause for Jasprit Bumrah, please."

When asked by the felicitation ceremony's host Gaurav Kapoor if he is wiling to sign a petition to term Bumrah as the 'national treasure and 'eighth wonder of the world', Kohli said, "I'll sign the petition now. He is a once-in-a-generation bowler."

At the start of the 16th over, Proteas needed just 30 off 30 balls in their run-chase of 177 at the Kensington Oval, Barbados before Bumrah came and changed the course of the game. From thereon, Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya (3 for 20) also jumped in to help India win by 7 runs.

Thus, Kohli further opined, "Like everyone in the stadium [here], we also felt at one point if it is going to slip away again, but what happened in those [last] five overs was truly, truly special."
