He must have provided a justification about his intentions containing no malice, but that does not justify what he has done with the child was right. In the case that he was unable to bend and remove his footwear due to a medical condition or physiological impediment, he could very well request for a chair and could have done it on his own, while being seated. Even in the clarification issued, he doesn’t speak of a medical issue that was preventing him from being able to bend”.

The Madras High Court has ordered the Tamil Nadu Director General of Police that a special branch should be appointed within two months, in every police station, to identify those who spread objectionable and defamatory content against those holding Constitutional posts, high offices and their families.&nbsp;

This comes after the High Court had earlier taken up the bail plea of Marudhachalam, a Chennai resident who was arrested for having posted defamatory, objectionable content about a sitting Judge. However, Marudhachalam was granted bail for having tendered an unconditional apology, besides having agreed to remove the objectionable, defamatory social media post.&nbsp;

Justice Dhandapani had earlier said that it had become a common, rampant practice for social media users to share defamatory content without any evidence against senior officials, those holding constitutional posts and their family members. He had ordered the cybercrime division to explore options, procedures to track and identify those posting such defamatory posts.

The judge had ordered the DGP to file a report on the action taken against such individuals who have been responsible for posting objectionable content against those hosting high offices.

“There is no set procedure to deal with the offenders posting objectionable and defamatory content on social media. If this is not dealt with an iron fist, it would cause serious problems in the coming times,” Justice Dhandapani said.&nbsp;

The Siddha doctor claimed that the medicine formulated by him along with his team treats infections caused by the virus within 24 hours to 40 hours.

"When we treated the dengue virus with our medicine, many patients with reduced platelets count, acute liver failure, immunity deficiency and low white blood cell (WBC) were cured within 24-40 hours. In coronavirus too I am confident our medicine will be very effective," he said.

According to activists, 6 women were detained in a community hall on Sunday morning by J5 Shastri Nagar Police for drawing anti-CAA kola’s in the upscale Besant nagar locality. Three advocates who had gone to get the women released were also said to be detained by the police. They were released later in the day.

Police have maintained that the protesters had informed them that they wanted to draw kolams with anti-CAA/NRC messages near the Besant Nagar bus terminus between 7 am&nbsp;and 10 am. But the permission for the same was not granted.

Cases were registered under Sections 143 (punishment for unlawful assembly) and 188 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) against the group.&nbsp;

Reacting to Sunday’s incident,&nbsp;MK Stalin tweeted, “This is a clear example that the authoritarianism of the AIADMK is increasing day by day.” He added that the detention of the women was in violation of their right to freedom of speech and expression guaranteed under the fundamental rights of the Constitution. He demanded that the case against them be withdrawn.&nbsp;

The DMK has rallied together with the Left outfits and other small parties here in their fight against the CAA and in expressing solidarity with those that have been raising their voices against the contentious bill.

The DMK and the Congress in Tamil Nadu have raised questions over why the CAA ignores the plight of Tamils who are a persecuted minority in Sri Lanka, while it considers minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.&nbsp;

It is not a new practice for Tamilians to show their love and respect for their icons by building temples in their honour. After temples were built for former Chief Ministers MGR, Jayalalithaa and Karunanidhi and a host of popular actors, a Narendra Modi temple have now been built in the Eragudi village in Tamil Nadu’s Trichy district. &nbsp;

The temple in honour of the current Indian Prime Minister was constructed by Shankar, a 50-year-old farmer who has been an admirer of the leader, since his days as Gujarat Chief Minister.&nbsp;

“I used to look up to him right from the time he was Chief Minister of Gujarat. Especially I have admired the manner in which he has developed the infrastructure in the State. The moment we knew that he was chosen as the PM candidate of the BJP, I was excited and have voted for him since then” Shankar told WION.&nbsp;

Constructing the temple, however, was not an easy task. Shankar says that he had to wait for a period of eight months for his 8ft x 8ft temple to get ready. “Our main source of income is agriculture on our 10-acre plot and I also have to take care of the needs of my children who are in college. So we first build the foundation and waited for over three months, later the pillars were erected, following which the tiles were laid and work was completed.”

Shankar also recalls that their family was very poor and how he lost his parents at a young age, how he had to discontinue his education while he was in his fourth grade." it was only by doing menial jobs that I earned some money to go to Saudi and work. I was rearing camels and sheep there, after working herd there for many years, I came back to our native and bought cultivable some land."

Besides a bust of Modi, the temple also has portraits of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s Kamaraj, MGR, Jayalalithaa, and also that of Home Minister Amit Shah, Mahatma Gandhi and current TN Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami.

When asked if he had benefitted from any schemes of the Modi Government over the last few years, he said that he immensely benefited from the PM-KISAN scheme that provided Rs.6000 every year to farmers who held land up to 2 hectares. “While Congress had announced various schemes for farmers during their rule, much of the benefits didn’t reach us as there was a vicious cycle of middlemen. But now all the benefits are being directly transferred to our account.”

Recalling the trauma that their modest family underwent in 2013 after his daughter couldn’t get admission into a medical college, despite having scored 1105/1200 in her State Board exams, he stated that she had to settle for an Engineering degree by sacrificing her dream of becoming a Doctor. “Later when the NEET(National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) was introduced by the Modi Government, it had ensured a level playing field such that even students from very humble backgrounds can aspire to get a medical seat by merit. &nbsp;My daughter couldn’t become a Doctor, but we hope that our son who is now in his 12th grade will clear NEET and join a medical college.”

Besides the KISAN scheme, Shankar says that their family has also built their first toilet under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Our family was in such a situation that we had always used firewood for cooking, but the Ujjwala Yojana changed things for the better and now we have access to LPG cylinders and cooking stoves.

On being asked about any specific requests he has for the Prime Minister, he said that if the river interlinking project were to be implemented, in his drought-prone district, lakhs of farmers like him would be able to sustain agriculture.&nbsp;

“I went to Mamallapuram to catch a glimpse of our PM during the Modi-Xi summit there in October and was able to see his motorcade from a distance. But I would consider it my life’s greatest opportunity if I get to meet our PM once, and I would fall on his feet to seek his blessings.”&nbsp;

Shankar says that many people have been flocking to his village every day to see the ‘Namo’ temple, he hopes to someday call top BJP leaders to perform grand rituals at his temple. Either way, he says he would perform the daily offerings at the temple for the rest of his life.

Speaking to reporters in Salem, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami hit back at the DMK and Stalin by saying that the Prime Minister and Home Minister had assured that the CAA does not threaten Indians living in India, irrespective of their religion.&nbsp;

“After the 2016 elections, Late CM Jayalalithaa had requested PM Modi regarding the provision of dual-citizenship for Sri Lankan Tamils. After her demise, I had emphasized the same issue to our PM” he said.&nbsp;

Accusing Stalin of spreading lies and falsehoods, Palaniswami stated that, “In 2009 during the war in Sri Lanka, them CM Karunanidhi, whose DMK was in an alliance with the UPA government went on a hunger strike, to ensure that the war ended. However, he called off his hunger strike within an hour and announced publicly that the Sri Lankan Tamils need not worry. It was believing this assurance that the Sri Lankan Tamils came out of hiding, only to have been killed&nbsp;by the Lankan forces. Over 1.5lakh Tamis were killed as they came out of hiding after believing Karunanidhi.”

Palaniswami questioned the DMK on why they did not protest back then (in 2009) and raise their voice against the then Congress-led UPA government. He accused the DMK of being power-hungry as many in their family were hiding important Central government portfolios. “When they ruled as a part of the Central Government for 13 years, why didn’t they ensure citizenship for the Lankan Tamils ?”

Adding that DMK MPs Kanimozhi and TR Baalu had met former Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse after the war and had accepted his gifts, the AIADMK leader slammed the DMK saying that they had no right to speak for the Sri Lankan Tamils.

Stating that there were over 59714 Sri Lankan Tamils living in 107 camps across Tamil Nadu, he added that they were being given government benefits on par with the people of Tamil Nadu.

Meanwhile, the DMK and its allies have decided to hold a rally against the CAA in Chennai city on Monday, December 23rd. Speaking to reporters DMK President MK Stalin said, “The CAA act must be revoked as it disrupts peace across the country. We want to know why Muslims and Sri Lankan Tamils are being excluded ?”

The DMK leader also accused the 12 MPs from Tamil Nadu for having supported the bill in the Upper House of Parliament. “It was because of the 11 AIADMK MPs and lone PMK member that the bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha”. "There is a peak in unemployment. It`s a curse on Tamil Nadu with no creation of industries and jobs. I urge the Centre and the state government to check the unemployment and layoffs in IT sector," Stalin said at a press conference.

"Already IT companies in Tamil Nadu are laying off employees citing many artificial reasons. Reports have stated that 40,000 IT employees will lose jobs across India and this is worrisome," he said.

As many as 7,000 graduates including engineers have applied for 549 posts of sanitary workers advertised by the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC).

Talking about the local body election, Stalin said the AIADMK was postponing the poll.

"For more than three years, the AIADMK has been trying to postpone the local body election. Media is blaming the DMK for this. We have approached the court for clarification in the electoral roll. We want the election but in compliance with all electoral norms," added Stalin.&nbsp;

Several key decisions were taken by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) at the party's general council meeting held here on Sunday, among which was the reiteration of its demand to reserve 90 per cent vacancies in Central government jobs in the state for Tamils.

Party president MK Stalin chaired the general council meeting held at YMCA Ground in Royapettah, in which a total number of 21 resolutions were passed.

"These resolutions show the party's stand and direction to the cadre. Whatever we were demanding, we have brought in as resolution," DMK leader TKS Elangovan told ANI.

The party also condemned the ruling-AIADMK for being involved in corruption and not delivering on their promises like monorail project, the abolishment of NEET exams, fight against GST and the new education policy.

The DMK passed resolutions to demand a permanent solution for water scarcity in the state, conducting local body elections immediately, finishing river linking projects.

It also condemned the arrest of politicians in Jammu and Kashmir. DMK also criticised the AIADMK for extending support to the BJP-led Central government on "Anti-Tamil" projects.

The party, in the meeting, also resolved to demand the release of the seven convicts lodged in prison for over 25 years in connection with the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.&nbsp;

The political tug-of-war began after Tamil Nadu BJP leaders put up posts on social media depicting the sage in saffron robes in an apparent attempt to suggest that he was a Hindu. Traditional pictures of the sage often depict him in white robes.

The incident led Dravidian politicians and members of other faiths contest the claim and state that it amounted to misappropriating Thiruvalluvar's literary and philosophical heritage.&nbsp;

In his Independence Day address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi too had quoted Thiruvalluvar- “neer indri amaiyadhu ulagu (the world can’t survive without water)".&nbsp;

Speaking on the issue, Rajini said “Thiruvalluvar is a great saint and belongs to everyone, he is beyond caste and religion. Thiruvalluvar is a God-believer and it is understood if one reads his couplets. The BJP on Twitter had portrayed him in a saffron hue but that is their opinion and they didn’t say that all of Thiruvalluvar’s statues should be in saffron or that holy ash must be smeared.”

Rajini dismissed the political controversy over Thiruvalluvar as ‘silly’ and emphasised the issue did not deserve the kind of attention it was being given. He stated that the issues of the common man are to be focussed upon.&nbsp;

Regarding his meeting with BJP leader Pon Radhakrishnan and the probability of joining the BJP, the actor said, “he didn’t make any offer”.

Responding to a question on the Indian economy, Rajini said that the economic growth was in a very bad state and that the government should do everything that is needed.

When asked about his impending decision to join politics and whether he would continue acting, he responded, “I can join any party, there is nothing wrong in parties asking me to join but they shouldn’t keep depending on me. I am the only one to decide on my political foray. I will keep acting in films until I enter politics. MGR also kept acting till his party won and he became the Chief Minister”.

The National Investigation Agency conducted searches across six locations spread across five districts in Tamil Nadu in connection with a 2018 criminal conspiracy that intended to spread terror in the State by targeting Hindu religious leaders and causing communal disharmony.

The early morning searches were carried out at two locations in Coimbatore City, besides one location each in Sivaganga, Tiruchirapalli, Nagapattinam and Toothukudi districts.&nbsp;

According to an NIA Statement, the case pertains to the criminal conspiracy hatched by 6 charge-sheeted accused persons and their associates, with the intention of furthering the objectives of ISIS/ Daish by targeting certain Hindu activists in Coimbatore.&nbsp;

The statement read, “accused persons arrested by Tamil Nadu Police in this case in September 2018 and charge-sheeted by NIA in February 2019 had conducted preparations, including reconnaissance of targets, for launching such attacks, which would have caused communal disharmony and terror in the State. The investigation has revealed that the charge-sheeted accused persons and their associates were radicalized on the violent extremist ideology of ISIS/ Daish by following the speeches and videos of the Sri Lankan IS/ Daesh leader Zahran Hashim, over social media platforms”.

Today’s searches were conducted at the residences of the associates of individuals who were charge-sheeted earlier.

The agency has seized two laptops, eight mobile phones, five SIM cards, an SD card and 14 documents, which would be subjected to forensic examination. The persons searched are being questioned to ascertain their association with the charge-sheeted accused persons besides any role in this crime.

Tamil Nadu: Depression off Kanyakumari coast likely to turn into cyclone

"The two-year-old toddler's body is now in a decomposed state. All efforts were put in to bring the child alive but now, in an unfortunate turn of events, bad smell has started to come from the borewell in which the child had fallen," Radhakrishnan told media persons while quoting doctors.

"The body is now highly decomposed and is in final observation," he added.

Government officials and rescue workers had been working continuously for the last 80 plus hours to retrieve the child. However, now the digging process has been stopped at a depth of 65 feet of the borewell.

As per the officials present at the site, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), doctors and special teams are working near the borewell and a complete report will be given.

On October 25, the toddler&nbsp;fell into the borewell while playing near his house at about 5:30 pm here in Trichy.

Later, he slipped further down into the borewell.

More than six crews from the NDRF, as well as the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), have been deployed to rescue Wilson.

A medical team was also providing oxygen to the boy.

The important point is not about the national aspirations of these regional parties, but their functioning. Whether it is DMK or Shiv Sena where family battles have come out in to open, or the Akali Dal, Janata Dal (S), PMK or the NCP, where an heir apparent has been anointed, or the TDP or RJD, whose family business is politics.&nbsp;

It is important to mention that Tamil Nadu is the pioneer in this aspect where the interests of the state, party, government and language are all subsumed for the welfare of a family enterprise.&nbsp;

In any business, maximisation of shareholder’s wealth is the main objective. Unfortunately, these regional parties are not listed on the stock exchanges and hence an accurate market valuation may not be available.

The total wealth declared by these leaders during election time in the form of affidavits can be a guide to their net worth. But, it will be an under-valuation since it only reflects what can be declared and does not tell the future earning potential of the business.&nbsp;

In this, there are multiple stakeholders other than the controlling family, which plans, allocates and execute projects, with the returns being shared.

The preoperative and preliminary expenses are related to rabble-rousing on caste or language issues. Some initial investment in the form of cut-outs is needed. Another method is to promise largesse in the form of free power, milk, free liquor, TV, free cinema, free rice (Why nobody offers free sex is a mystery to me!), which are to be given from the state exchequer.&nbsp;

In this model, the actual business entity need not worry about operational expenses since post-power, it has total access to the revenue stream.

So, most regional parties ultimately became unlisted family enterprises (DMK/ SP/ RJD/ NC/ SS/ TDP/ YSRP). Three others came to be run by single women (AIADMK/ TMC/ BSP). Since Congress itself is a family-controlled party, it was easier for it to deal with other families through the patronage system. Meanwhile, the amassing of wealth by families that run regional parties is ignored with a benign smile.&nbsp;

At one point, Indira Gandhi had a deal with the DMK where she allowed the latter all the Assembly seats in lieu of Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu. That was accommodation par excellence.&nbsp;

But the emergence of the BJP as the main pole in national politics, has altered the nature of the discourse. This is one of the reasons why the BJP and the Shiv Sena are having a tough time sealing the deal in Maharashtra.&nbsp;

Unlike the Congress, the BJP seems less interested in the patronage and sharing system of spoils since it has a majority of its own in the Lok Sabha. To that extent, it is not dependent on regional families like the DMK.&nbsp;

Many leaders of regional parties find it more attractive to join the BJP than being regional. Congress is not in a position to be an alternate pole to attract regional parties, who find it difficult to be out of power for long periods because their ‘sources’ get depleted. The new national rhythm of the BJP is thus a challenge to regionalism, which can create its own fault-lines in the Indian polity.&nbsp;

The accommodative and patronage-based policy of the Congress towards regional satraps may be replaced by aggressive nationalist postures. Introduction of pan-Indian regulations and laws like GST may be accelerated. Or will the BJP become like the Congress, as far as accommodative politics goes? That is a major issue.

Will the business model of regional family parties meet its nemesis? One reason it will flourish for some more years is the increasing importance of land as a factor of production.&nbsp;

In the 1960s, capital was scarce and land was easily allotted. Now capital is available even from global sources, but land is scarce and that is the strength of these families. Control and allotment of land is the primary ‘son rise’ (pun intended) industry.

To that extent, family businesses will flourish since land is gold and as our regional political parties have realised, it is a state subject.

More than Uniform Civil Code, what is needed is making land and water central subjects. This will alter the future of India, which is linked to some 40-50 families and their capacity for rabble-rousing along with rapaciousness and greed. Are we ready for a thorough reform? Will BJP bite the bullet?

Politics as family enterprise: Nationalist rhythm of BJP is challenge to regionalism

At 70 where most are executing their retirement plans, this woman in Tamil Nadu with unmatchable grit is serving the poor.

Rani, runs an idli shop near Agni Tirtham in Rameswaram and serves free food to the needy.

Donning a bright smile on her face, she works relentlessly and earns her own livelihood.

Where she provides poor for free, she charges a minimum amount from the rest of her customers.

Rani owns at a makeshift shop at Rameswaram's Agni Thirtham seashore and uses the traditional wooden stove to prepares the food.

Assisted by a temporary labourer, she works throughout the year to serve idli at the cost Rs 30 in a city where, the residents say, a plate of idli costs at least Rs 60.

Speaking to ANI amid customers thronging her shop on a Sunday morning, Rani said people come to her shop only because she showers love on them and considers all as family.

"I do not have a proper shop what I have a temporary makeshift arrangement. People come to me only because of the love I shower on them. I never treat them as my customers rather I consider them as a member of my family," she said and added, "Although I am old, I earn my livelihood."

Rani said she still uses the traditional wooden stove to prepare her food because it is "economical".

Rakku, who works at her idli shop, said the shop provides temporary employment to her.

"I hail from a fisherman family. When we do not go to fishing, I work here," she told ANI.

She said that Rani does not insist on money if anyone is not able to pay for the food.

"So many people are our daily customers. We do not insist on the money. Even if anyone does not have money, you serve them the food and do not insist for payment," Rakku said.

Rani's roadside shop is famous amongst the locals and tourists alike.

"In Rameswaram, If you visit any hotel and have food, it will cost you at least Rs 60 but this shop offers food in just Rs 30. The most important thing is even on this age she works and maintains the old methods to prepare the food," Nagendran, a customer, told ANI.

The Indian Army has received intelligence inputs of possible terror attacks in South India after security forces recovered abandoned boats from Sir Creek in Gujarat.

While interacting with media General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (Southern Command) Lt Gen SK Saini said that We have got many inputs that there may be a terrorist attack in the southern part of India and peninsular India. There have been some abandoned boats also which have been recovered in the area of Sir Creek.

He said the Army has undertaken "measures for capacity building and capability development" due to heightened threat in Sir creek. &nbsp;&nbsp;

"We have undertaken measures for capacity building and capability development in the area of Sir Creek keeping in mind the enhanced threat," he said, adding the precautions were being taken to ensure that inimical elements or terrorists do not succeed in their designs.

The remarks came a fortnight after government sources told ANI that Pakistan had deployed SSG commandos along Sir Creek in Gujarat to carry out anti-India activities in the region.

Pakistan has made irresponsible and provocative statements after government repealed Article 370, which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir last month. India has said it was an internal matter.

Madras Day: Chennai turns 380 years old

Rains lashed several parts of the city and its neighbourhood on Sunday bringing huge respite to the drought-hit Chennai.

A local resident, Suresh Balaji said, "This rain has brought relief to us. Although it is raining very little. If people follow water harvesting during this time then it will really help us in the future."

Puviyarasan, the Director of Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre told ANI, "Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are likely to receive moderate rainfall for the next 48 hours. Since July both the places have received 16cm of rainfall, usually, it is 18cm."

"There are no special warnings for fishermen in Tamilnadu," he added.&nbsp;

Heavy rainfall is predicted during the next 24 hours at most places over coastal Karnataka and south interior Karnataka and at a few places over the north interior of the state, the IMD said on Sunday.

"Heavy rain very likely to occur during the next 24 hours at isolated places in Karnataka," the IMD said.

The districts which are expected to receive heavy rainfall are Hassan, Kodagu, Chamarajanagar, Chikkaballapur, Bangalore Urban, Bangalore Rural, Ramanagara, Mysore, Mandya Tumkur and Kolar.

Out of the 22 flood battered districts, the maximum deaths have occurred in Belagavi, where 15 people were killed.

According to data, at least 14 people remain missing.Rescue teams deployed in the state have rescued over seven lakh people till now, the report stated.&nbsp;

Former Indian national cricketer VB Chandrasekhar has died in what investigators suspect was suicide prompted by worries about debt, police said Friday.

Chandrasekhar, 57, was found in his bedroom by his family in the southern city of Chennai on Thursday evening, police investigator Senthil Murugan said.

"We have booked a case of unnatural death. According to our preliminary investigation, he has been under a financial stress. The autopsy report is awaited," Murugan told AFP.
