More than a week after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, a deadly blast outside the Kabul Airport has brought back horrifying memories for the country.

The Kabul International Airport has been a heated place in Afghanistan for the past few weeks as several locals and other national citizens have been trying to leave the country. Afghans have been spotted crowding the walls and gates of the airport in the hope of getting a chance to leave the country and flee from the control of the Taliban.

However, to add to their existing deadly problems various intelligence agencies reported that there is a growing risk of a possible terrorist attack at the airport, even though the US troops have been trying to secure the area.

Recently, the US President Joe Biden said there is "an acute and growing risk" of an attack at the airport by the group's regional chapter, called Islamic State-Khorasan or ISIS-K.

Following the warning, the US and UK asked their citizens in Kabul to stay away from the airport. However, many did not heed to the advise and twin deadly blasts rocked the area, killing at least 13 people and injuring several others.

The students of Seminaries came as sweeping wave to conquer entire Afghanistan in just two weeks in the most unprecedented manner. They have claimed the power in erstwhile Gandhara Kingdom and are now negotiating with Afghan leaders to establish a legitimate government.

India being a big stakeholder in the development of Afghanistan must watch things carefully. So far Indian government has not opened its cards and is watching the developments carefully. Relations with the power centres of Afghanistan is of great importance for India and hence any development on this turf is to be watched carefully.

India had a diplomatic setback when despite of being the most important country in South Asia, it was kept away from Doha as well as Moscow talks. This affected the relationship and mutual understanding with Taliban. With China flexing its muscles now in central Asia, it becomes important for India to have a clear-cut policy towards Taliban.

It had reverse aspect too. Having a fair relation with India is also on the cards for Taliban since they are struggling for legitimacy. Any action against the biggest democracy of the world will spoil their dreams. Further, they are cash-strapped and are unable to run a country. Countries are not run with the gun-slinging to the shoulder but by effective utilisation of resources and human capital. They will need not only financial but also the diplomatic support from the world. If they do not get it, their regime will be short-lived. In the current day situation, they are in power and with Taliban being in power corridors, India must look for three major aspects before opening its cards.

Taliban’s Proximity with Pakistan

First and foremost concern is the proximity of Taliban with Pakistan, ISI and their government. Taliban was raised on the platform of fanatic Islam & terrorism. It is a universal truth that Taliban is not only the creation of Pakistan but currently being run on ISI directives. It was further evident in recent events where ISI officials accompanied Taliban during search of Indian consulates in Herat & Kandahar. Pakistan and India have long-running issues, have fought four wars and thus, Pakistan would never like Taliban to be favouring India. It will also try to create unrest and promote terror activities in India using Taliban.

Notorious terrorists like Maulana Massoud Azhar and Hafiz Saeed have proximity with top Taliban leaders. There are high chances that present-day Taliban seminaries may become breeding grounds for terrorists causing disturbances in India. Although Taliban is desperate for legitimacy and their spokesperson has been reiterating that this will be a new chapter of their rule which will be devoid of terrorism, but India needs to watch their deeds first.

Indian investments & bilateral trade with Afghanistan

Over last few years, India has invested heavily in Afghanistan to the tune of about 3 billion USD. Nearly all of it was developmental assistance in the form of more than 40 projects. There is a long list including Salma Dam in Herat, Zaranj-Delaram highway, Afghan Parliament, restoration of Stor Palace & many more in the fields of power, transmission, health, sanitation as well as education. There were several other projects are currently in pipeline including Shahtoot Dam near Kabul.

Since Afghanistan is a landlocked country, India also established a supply chain network connecting Chabahar Port to Afghanistan. With Taliban in power, there are serious threats looming over the upcoming projects and India must be cautious of every Taliban move. Safety and continuation of Indian interests is a prime concern.

Further, India has been the biggest export market for Afghanistan and a major source of revenue for the hilly country. In year 2020-21, the bilateral trade was close to 1.7 billion USD which was a major source of revenue for Afghanistan and in case Indo-Taliban relations sour, it will be a financial catastrophe for government of Afghanistan.

Global Posturing

Any Indian reaction against Taliban led power centres in Afghanistan will also be dependent upon global posturing. Concurrently, most of the world has not yet recognised Taliban as a legitimate government and everyone is looking at each other.

There are serious allegations of Terrorism, human rights violation, ultra-fanatic attitude, lunatic, Anti-democracy, and being a puppet of Pakistan against Taliban and they must fulfil the expectations of the world first. While keeping India on its wrong side will be detrimental for Taliban, India also must see the flow of water in Kabul river and the global posturing before establishing relationship with Taliban.

Over last few months, India has been reluctant to open communication channels with Taliban owing to their attitude, proximity with Terror sympathisers and ultra-fanatic attitude. With them in power, there are mutual expectations from both sides.

While Taliban wants legitimacy and a better economy, India wants safety of its past, present, and future investments, humanitarian approach from Taliban and their changed attitude towards terror related activities.

Since Taliban is in dire need, they will have to prove themselves first before India makes a move. Taliban must prove to the world that they are no longer a terrorist organisation and are not dancing to the tunes of Pakistan ISI. They also must induce comfort levels to the world with relation to humanitarian approach.

WION: When you look at those very desperate scenes coming out of the airport at Kabul and you were one of those lucky few ones who managed to get out of Kabul in time. What exactly was going through your mind and how were you feeling, knowing that you were just one of those lucky ones who managed to escape, get out of the country?

ARYANA SAYEED: Well, I am obviously very grateful. I am grateful that I made it out alive of Afghanistan along with my fiancée. But, to be honest with you, I am really very worried and concerned about my people back there who are still there and have nowhere to go and they are living a life of misery and fear right now. It's just heartbreaking and even though I have been out of Afghanistan for the past seven days now. But my mind and heart is still there and I do not feel normal at all.

WION: Can you narrate to us the ordeal that you had to go through to get out of Afghanistan?

ARYANA SAYEED: Well, my fiancée and i were first booked initially on a commercial flight to take off from Afghanistan on 15th of August. But by the 15th of August, we went to the airport at around 2 or 3 in the afternoon and our flight was supposed to be at 8 pm. So we went to the airport and it was just packed with people. There were thousands of people and it was really difficult to--first of all--get in.

It would have taken a few hours, and so we get in and waiting to be checked in and at around 5 or 6 pm, we heard gun shots. And we (got to know) that the Taliban was just outside the airport and they were going to come in any minute now. As a result of that, everybody got scared and people started running around--the airport staff and the security ran away and left the people just like that.

The planes were open to public and everybody was just rushing in inside the planes with small children with bags on their shoulders and things like that. So, unfortunately, by the time I got on the plane I see that there's no space at all to sit there and there is no space to stand. It was packed with a thousand people. Also, it needs to be mentioned that the pilots ran away, they were scared as well. They couldn't fly the planes with thousands of people hanging on (to) the plane. There were also individuals who were armed with guns on them. So the plane couldn't take off that day. We had to come off the plane and then come back to the terminal. Inside the terminal we (were) confused and thinking 'what should we do, what should we do?' Because outside there's Taliban.

Also, we had heard the news they they were going to come inside, walk in. So we had to take a risk and get out of the airport somehow. With the help of a few cousins of my fiancée, who came in like angels, took us out of the airport. We had to walk through gunshots and bullets. They were trying to shoot in the air because they were trying to scare people off so that they do not rush inside the airport. So we got away at 10 or 11 in the night and then the next day, we attempted for the airport again which was very risky, especially for me because I am a well-known face in Afghanistan as you know and I have been a women's rights activists. I have been a target (of the Taliban) in the past.

So it was extra challenging for me to make that journey from my house to the airport. But (then) again, we had no choice but to take that risk. So we took two cars the next night and went to the airport, we passed a few Taliban checkpoints. But, luckily, they did not check us. One of them just looked through the window. We had some children with us because we wanted to blend in and look like a normal family. So, they didn't ask anything and let us go. So we get to the airport again--and this is the other side of the airport--where the American military base is and even this side is full of people and it would take you perhaps more than an hour or two to get to the gate where the base is. This is how packed the place was. The children were crying, babies were screaming.

WION: Also, Aryana, as an Afghan national who has been living through this crisis and has got her family living back in Afghanistan, who do you hold accountable for the mess that Afghanistan finds itself in now?

ARYANA SAYEED: Well, seriously, I don't know who to blame first. But, the first country that I would blame personally is Pakistan because that's exactly where the Taliban's trained, that's where their bases are, that's where they get their funding from and their instructions from. And, obviously, Pakistan is being funded by other countries. So its really like a crazy situation, its like a dirty game, dirty political game that is being played inside of Afghanistan. Unfortunately, that's never-ending. The lives of so many people--innocent people--is being sacrificed as a result of a very dirty game that's being played. I blame the entire world now for leaving Afghanistan alone in the hands of Taliban. I cannot actually believe that they would reach a deal with a bunch of people who treat women like animals in Afghanistan, who don't even like women. They don't like humanity, they don't know what humanity means or what it should be. It's really heartbreaking and disappointing for all those innocent people who are being played and have nowhere to go. And they have to suffer, and suffer and suffer.

So, Afghan pop star Aryana Sayeed and her fiancée Hasib Sayed fled the country that's reeling under the atrocious ways of the Taliban regime. In an exclusive interview with WION--now living safely in Amsterdam for the last seven days--Aryana spoke about the most horrifying journey of her life, her anger towards the world for turning their backs on Afghanistan, and claims that for Taliban, women are no different than animals. Excerpts from the video conversation: Also read: 'Samantha Akkineni thought 'The Family Man 2' would flop, calls it 'risky' WION: When you look at those very desperate scenes coming out of the airport at Kabul and you were one of those lucky few ones who managed to get out of Kabul in time.
