Sweden has experienced its earliest recorded beginning of what it defines as "summer," with three southern towns reporting average temperatures above 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit) for five consecutive days, announced the country's meteorological service on Thursday (April 11).

"A Swedish weather record was broken on Saturday, April 6, 2024. Each day from April 6th to 10th, the average daily temperature was at least 10 degrees at SMHI's stations in Malmo, Kristianstad and Karlshamn," SMHI said on its website.

"The condition was thereby met for meteorological summer at these three stations," it said.

"This is the earliest arrival date for summer ever observed in Sweden, with statistics that date back to the end of the 1800s," it added.

The previous record occurred in 1906 when the official start of summer was recorded on April 10th.

"Inevitably, as global warming progresses, the likelihood of summer arriving ever earlier increases," SMHI said.

Even though summer has officially begun, much of Sweden was not expected to experience warm weather through the following week, with temperatures predicted to stay in the single digits.

Simon Stiell, the UN Climate Chief, warned that governments, business leaders, and development banks have a two-year window to implement measures to prevent more severe climate change.

In a speech at the Chatham House&nbsp;in London, Stiell said, "We still have a chance to make greenhouse gas emissions tumble, with a new generation of national climate plans. But we need these stronger plans now."

He added, "More and more people want climate action right across societies and political spectrums, largely because they are feeling the impacts of the climate crisis in their everyday lives and household budgets."

In the semi-autonomous Chinese region of Hong Kong, officials declared on Monday that "together with the exceptionally hot weather in June and July, Hong Kong experienced the hottest summer on record from June to August 2023".

The city recorded a monthly mean temperature of 29.7 degrees Celsius (85 degrees Fahrenheit) last month, the hottest August on record, according to the Hong Kong Observatory.

This year also saw the third-hottest July and fourth-hottest June since records began in 1884.

The top three warmest years in Hong Kong's history were all recorded after 2018.

August was also "much drier than usual with a total rainfall of 140.7 millimetres (5.5 inches)," the Observatory added. Worldwide, temperature records have tumbled in recent years, as climate change makes meteorological conditions more volatile.

Hong Kong saw hottest summer on record in 2023

Japan this year recorded the country's highest-ever average temperature since the inception of records in 1898, the weather agency on Friday (September 1) said.

"Average temperatures in Japan are the highest for summer since 1898," the agency said.

From the month of June to August, the agency recorded "considerably higher" average summer temperatures in "northern, eastern, and western Japan".

"The average temperature anomaly in Japan, based on observations at 15 locations, was +1.76 degrees C, far exceeding that of 2010 (+1.08 degrees C), which was the highest since statistics began in 1898 and the highest for summer," it said in a statement.

"Warm air tended to cover northern Japan and warm air flowed in from the south, resulting in considerably higher average summer temperatures in northern, eastern, and western Japan," it added.

The agency further added that in many locations, such as Itoigawa City "not only maximum temperatures but also minimum temperatures reached record highs".&nbsp;

On August 10, the city in Japan's Niigata region recorded a low of 31.4 degrees Celsius (88.5 Fahrenheit), which was the highest daily minimum temperature in all of Japan.&nbsp;

The agency said that as compared to years with particularly high average summer temperatures (2010, 2013, 2018, and 2022), the number of days with soaring temperatures significantly increased from late July onward, taking the total to the highest number since 2010.

<h2>Heat-related deaths in Japan</h2>

July this year was officially declared as the country's warmest month in a century with at least 53 people succumbing to heatstrokes and nearly 50,000 needing emergency medical attention.

The Japan Times last month published a detailed report on heat-related deaths. Citing official statistics, it said that the number of heatstroke-related deaths increased from an average of 201 people a year between 1995 and 1999, to an average of 1295 from 2018 to 2022.&nbsp;

According to the report, the health ministry data showed that the elderly were the ones who were most impacted.&nbsp;

Other parts of the world also witnessed record temperatures this summer. As per EU's climate observatory Copernicus, July 2023, which saw heatwaves and fires around the world, was the hottest month ever registered on Earth.

In France this month late-summer records toppled as a "heat dome" bore down on much of the country, hitting the southern half and Mediterranean coast especially hard. &nbsp;

"Warm air tended to cover northern Japan and warm air flowed in from the south, resulting in considerably higher average summer temperatures in northern, eastern, and western Japan," it added. The agency further added that in many locations, such as Itoigawa City "not only maximum temperatures but also minimum temperatures reached record highs". On August 10, the city in Japan's Niigata region recorded a low of 31.4 degrees Celsius (88.5 Fahrenheit), which was the highest daily minimum temperature in all of Japan. Heat-related deaths in Japan July this year was officially declared as the country's warmest month in a century with at least 53 people succumbing to heatstrokes and nearly 50,000 needing emergency medical attention. This unusual weather phenomenon has been attributed to an unusually wet winter and temperatures remaining low well into the spring which have also kept the typical dry weather conditions leading to massive wildfires over the years, at bay this time around.&nbsp;

As of earlier this month, California’s fire forecast remains “normal” to “below normal” due to the heavy rain and snow this year, reported NPR.

On July 21, the snowpack in both the South and Central Sierra regions was a whopping 1,000 per cent of the average for that date, according to the Los Angeles Times. Additionally, snow cover at high elevations has also reportedly persisted far longer compared with last year.&nbsp;

The report also noted that such favourable conditions for longer snow were last seen over a decade ago, in 2011. “It’s pretty great to still have snowpack around,” said Andrew Schwartz, lead scientist at the University of California, Berkeley’s Central Sierra Snow Laboratory.&nbsp;

However, he has also cautioned about late-season wet slab avalanches which occur when a layer of snow, or a slab, gets wet and very heavy ultimately causing the slab to slide downhill and can potentially partly or completely bury a person.

Earlier this month, a hiker was reported to have died in an avalanche on Split Mountain in Inyo County. Schwartz, according to the media report, also noted that rivers and streams from snowmelt have also been flowing faster and higher than average this year but the runoff peaked on June 1. However, it has since been on a downswing since but some of them still pose a threat to people venturing into the mountains in the upcoming days and weeks, he added.&nbsp;

Similarly, Rob Patterson, president of the Mono County Sheriff’s Office’s search-and-rescue team said, “It makes people want to get in the water, and it makes the snow melt faster.” He added, “So I want to caution people to please be very, very, very careful around water, especially anything that leads to a stream or river. I would just not get in there right now.”

This year, the country also experienced its second driest-ever spring on record, leaving behind the one it faced in 1995, stated the AEMET agency as the prolonged drought hit the country's key agricultural sector.

In 2022, Spain had its hottest year on record and now it is expected to become one of the worst-hit countries of the European Union in terms of climate change.

According to AEMET, the average temperature was "14.2 degree&nbsp;Celsius (57.5 degrees Fahrenheit), which was 1.8 degree&nbsp;Celsius hotter" than normal.

That is "extremely hot, exceeding 1997 -- the hottest spring up to now -- by 0.3 degree&nbsp;Celsius," it added.

"The spring of 2023 was the hottest spring on record in Spain," AEMET stated while speaking about the three-month period that began in March.&nbsp;

The country in late April had battled a major heatwave as local temperatures shot up to 20 degree&nbsp;Celsius above average, increasing the drought.

In the month of May, temperatures remained slightly higher than average and then dropped below the average in the month's second half as it received heavy rainfall that helped in cooling down the weather but couldn't alleviate the drought.&nbsp;

"Until almost mid-May, there was no rain," stated AEMET spokesman Ruben del Campo.&nbsp;

"With the rains in the second half of May, the situation has eased a little."

However, the drought, "which is measured over the longer term, has not been resolved," he added.&nbsp;

"How long it would continue would depend on the levels of rainfall later in the year," he stated.&nbsp;

"In this hydrological year so far, we've seen a 20 per cent shortage in rainfall so for that to be resolved, it would need to rain 20 per cent more (than usual) in autumn," Campo further added.&nbsp;

<h2>Hot and hotter&nbsp;</h2>

In the last few years, Spain has been facing more heatwaves and rainfall has been increasingly scarce and irregular.

AEMET forecasters last year recorded "35 days of record-breaking heat when temperatures were above the seasonal average", del Campo stated.&nbsp;

"That's one record every 10 days," he added.&nbsp;

Spain experiences 'hottest spring on record' in 60 years

There can be no sea ice left in the Arctic roughly a decade earlier than expected, warned scientists in another sign of the climate crisis accelerating faster than expected as pollution continues to heat the planet.

Journal Nature Communications published a new study on Tuesday which stated that Arctic sea ice is likely to completely disappear during the month of September in the 2030s.&nbsp;

The scientists stated that even if planet-heating pollution is significantly reduced, the sea ice in the Arctic may still disappear in summer by the 2050s.

The changes from 1979 to 2019 were analysed by the researchers, as they compared different satellite data and climate models to understand how Arctic sea ice was changing.

It was understood that sea ice was declining largely because of human-caused, planet-heating pollution, and Arctic sea ice melting trends were underestimated by the previous models.&nbsp;

“We were surprised to find that the ice-free Arctic will be there in summer irrespective of our effort at reducing emissions, which was not expected,” stated Seung-Ki Min, lead author of the study and professor at Pohang University of Science and Technology in South Korea, while speaking to CNN.

During the winter, Arctic ice builds up and then melts in the summer months, generally hitting its lowest levels in September, before the cycle starts again.

"Once Arctic summers become ice-free, the buildup of sea ice in the colder seasons will be much slower," Min stated.&nbsp;

With a ‘higher emissions pathway’, &nbsp;in which fossil fuels continue to be burned and levels of planet-warming pollution continue to increase, the study emphasises on complete loss of sea ice in the Arctic from August until as late as October before the 2080s, said Min.&nbsp;

<h2>Study in contrast with the UN’s report&nbsp;</h2>

The findings of the study are in contrast with the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s 2021 state-of-the-science report which stated that the Arctic would be “practically ice-free near mid-century under intermediate and high greenhouse gas emissions scenarios.”

Min said that the new study shows that ice-free Arctic can occur 10 years earlier than expected, regardless of emission scenarios.&nbsp;

Researcher with the Finnish Meteorological Institute and the 2022 study's lead author Mika Rantanen said that the study benefited from “novel and state-of-the-art methodology” for predicting when the Arctic will go ice-free.

“The methodology is very careful and brings a high degree of certainty in the attribution,” stated Rantanen, who was not a part of the study.&nbsp;

“The most striking result is not that the sea ice loss is attributed to greenhouse gas increases, which was already largely known, but that they project the ice-free Arctic earlier than previously thought by about a decade," he added.&nbsp;

The ice-free conditions will impact Arctic indigenous communities as their hunting and traveling will be affected. Journal Nature Communications published a new study on Tuesday which stated that Arctic sea ice is likely to completely disappear during the month of September in the 2030s. The scientists stated that even if planet-heating pollution is significantly reduced, the sea ice in the Arctic may still disappear in summer by the 2050s. The changes from 1979 to 2019 were analysed by the researchers, as they compared different satellite data and climate models to understand how Arctic sea ice was changing. It was understood that sea ice was declining largely because of human-caused, planet-heating pollution, and Arctic sea ice melting trends were underestimated by the previous models. During the winter, Arctic ice builds up and then melts in the summer months, generally hitting its lowest levels in September, before the cycle starts again. "Once Arctic summers become ice-free, the buildup of sea ice in the colder seasons will be much slower," Min stated. With a ‘higher emissions pathway’, in which fossil fuels continue to be burned and levels of planet-warming pollution continue to increase, the study emphasises on complete loss of sea ice in the Arctic from August until as late as October before the 2080s, said Min. Study in contrast with the UN’s report The findings of the study are in contrast with the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s 2021 state-of-the-science report which stated that the Arctic would be “practically ice-free near mid-century under intermediate and high greenhouse gas emissions scenarios.” Min said that the new study shows that ice-free Arctic can occur 10 years earlier than expected, regardless of emission scenarios. The ice-free conditions will impact Arctic indigenous communities as their hunting and traveling will be affected. Animals that depend on sea ice will feel the impact. “As Arctic warming is enhanced, permafrost will also melt earlier and many species, including polar bears, walruses and reindeer, will have trouble surviving,” added Min. The customers of the Uber application in the United Kingdom will soon be able to book flight tickets through the ride-booking app, as the company aims to offer various forms of transport to its customers.&nbsp;

The new feature which allows consumers to book international and domestic flights is being rolled out on the UK application of Uber and will be available to all users in Britain by the summer.

Uber stated the function of flight booking was part of its ambition to “create a seamless door-to-door travel solution” alongside the car ride-sharing function, for which it was first known.&nbsp;

The company has entered into a partnership with online travel agent Hopper which will allow users to book flights and in return, it will receive a small commission from every sale.&nbsp;

"The addition of flights to the Uber app is a big win for UK consumers who are looking for an easier way to book travel," stated Frederic Lalonde, CEO and co-founder of Hopper, in a press release.&nbsp;

"This new partnership will offer Uber users choice, transparency and flexibility when booking flights, all in the same place they are already booking their other transportation," he added.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Uber's general manager in UK Andrew Brem said, “Our new functionality will make the booking and managing of air travel simple and stress-free, with the booking process taking as little as one minute.”

Uber’s chief executive, Dara Khosrowshahi, stated that he had planned to make his company “an operating system for everyday life” in 2019 when the ride-hailing application was merged with Uber Eats food delivery services.&nbsp;

He added that a feature was also added in the application to highlight local public transport options.

The tickets for these journeys can be booked through Uber’s app which permits passengers to board the riverboats by using a QR code on their phone.

To book flight tickets, Uber users will be required to enter their travel information, which includes where they are flying from and to, and the date of travel as planned.

According to a report by Hindustan Times, the temperature by the end of the second half of the month was enough to possibly put the whole month in the top 10 coldest moths of March in the past 73 years or so. Towards mid-March, an earlier-than-usual development of anti-cyclonic circulation in India brought what could be one of the earliest and most significant heatwaves in India. &nbsp;

This comes as between March 13 and 19, temperatures in the plains of North India were at least 10 degree Celsius above normal, while it was up to 15 degree Celsius in the Himalayan states. Meanwhile, the temperature was above normal by at least five to 10 degree Celsius in the rest of the country.&nbsp;

However, India recorded its average maximum up to March 29 at 30.35 degrees Celsius, as per the data from IMD gridded dataset, reported HT, which was 0.96 degrees below the 1981-2010 average for this time period and was also considered usual by the weather agency. However, March was also the 12th coolest since 1951, the first time that IMD gridded data and also the complete opposite of its preceding month which was the 13th warmest since over seven decades ago.&nbsp;

Notably, the IMD did not forecast the month of March to be a cool one as by the end of February the weather agency said that it is expected to be warmer than usual. However, after the first two weeks temperatures climbed down in most parts of India and on average each day has been at least 1.3 degree Celsius cooler than normal, reported HT.&nbsp;

The report attributed two possible two active western disturbances, cyclonic circulations over Rajasthan and a region of low pressure over the south and east central part of India, citing IMD data. Additionally, the westerly winds of over 100 km/hr along with the moisture from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea due to anti-cyclonic circulation there led to sustained rainfall, thunderstorm, and even hailstorm.
