According to the Indian Air Force, the C-17 aircraft departed from the Hindon Air Force Station, near New Delhi, on the intervening night of May 3rd and 4th.&nbsp;The heavy-lifter aircraft made a pit stop in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where keeping in mind the challenges of refuelling in its conflict-hit destination, Sudan, it tanked up on extra fuel.

This mission was undertaken to repatriate 192 passengers - mostly women, children and elderly individuals, who were either NRIs, foreign nationals or OCIs (Overseas Citizens of India). The military aircraft had to fly from Jeddah to Sudan and then directly back to India in a non-stop flight, as the passengers were not permitted to land in Jeddah.

Given the ongoing conflict in Sudan, the military aircraft performing repatriation flights are landing at their own risk and must undertake necessary measures for their safety. As part of the daring mission, the C-17 aircrew, as per the IAF, "carried out an overhead steep tactical arrival followed by an assault approach to land the heavy jet."&nbsp;

IAF Spokesperson Wing Commander Ashish Moghe explained to WION that the steep landings are performed in order to safeguard from the threats of small-arms fire from the ground.&nbsp;

He added that the angle of approach during such a landing would be higher than that of a conventional landing. As the aircraft stood on the tarmac and passengers boarded, the plane's engines were kept running in precautionary anticipation of a quick exit. &nbsp;

While flying back from Sudan to India, the C-17 crew faced another unplanned emergency when one of the passengers fell unconscious. However, the crew immediately handled the situation and stabilised the patient by providing him with oxygen. IAF said that the C-17 carrying 192 passengers from Sudan landed at Ahmedabad late Thursday evening and then at the home base of Hindon, later that night. The C-17 Globemaster III flew close to 9600 km as part of this mission, with the aircrew flying extended duty periods of nearly 24 hours.

Speaking to The Guardian, Suleiman, a British national, said that a UK government official called him to say that he could be evacuated with his two children only if he left his pregnant wife behind. His children are British nationals, but their mother is a Sudanese citizen.

“He said: ‘I’m sorry, you’re going to fly with your children, but your wife cannot.’ When I told him that’s impossible, the children are dependent on their mother and I can’t leave my wife who has a high-risk pregnancy, he just refused and said that’s all I can do,” Suleiman said, as quoted by The Guardian.

Suleiman decided to remain in Sudan with his children and wife, fearing that the journey to Port Sudan might endanger his wife.&nbsp;

Another British citizen- Roza Mohamed, said how her Sudanese sister Amina, and her three-year-old niece Samrin, were prevented from boarding an evacuation flight out of Port Sudan as Amina lacked a UK visa and was not able to prove Samrin's British citizenship obtained via her father.&nbsp;

The report also pointed out that in some cases, British officials gave the parents of young children visas and allowed them to board. But in others, they turned them away and it is not yet clear why these cases were treated differently.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, some children with British passports were prevented from boarding evacuation flights as their accompanying parents lacked UK visas which were later provided by officials after pressure from British nationals in the UK.&nbsp;

The Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO) has been criticised for handling evacuations from Sudan. The report also said that after a week of pressure from the British Medical Association, Foreign Secretary, James Cleverly permitted many NHS doctors and their dependents stranded in Sudan to board evacuation flights from an airstrip north of Khartoum and an additional flight from Port Sudan.

The UK government has repeatedly denied abandoning anyone in Sudan. On Thursday, it announced that it would provide an initial $6.3 million of life-saving aid "to help meet the urgent needs of those fleeing the violence in Sudan.&nbsp;

"I join the peace-loving people of Sudan and leaders around the world in calling for a durable ceasefire between the belligerent parties. This violence, which has already stolen the lives of hundreds of civilians and began during the holy month of Ramadan, is unconscionable. It must end," Biden said.&nbsp;

Biden also talked about American efforts for the safe departure of thousands of people - Americans and others from Sudan.&nbsp;

"Our diplomatic efforts to urge all parties to end the military conflict and allow unhindered humanitarian access continue, as do our efforts to assist those remaining Americans, including by providing them information on exit options," Biden further said and highlighted that Washington stands ready to support enhanced humanitarian assistance when conditions allow.

The conflict in Sudan between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) &nbsp;has been going on since April 15. The fighting rages on despite both sides agreeing to repeated ceasefire deals.

As the conflict between Sudan's army and paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continues, the UN's refugee agency the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) estimates that a total of 800,000 people could potentially flee to neighbouring nations, reports AFP.

Briefing the press in Geneva, UNHCR spokesperson Olga Sarrado said that "over 100,000 refugees are estimated to be among those who have now fled Sudan to neighbouring countries, including Sudanese refugees, South Sudanese returning home prematurely, and others who were themselves refugees in Sudan."

The number of internally displaced people as per the UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM) stands at an estimated 334,000. As per a situation report released by the agency: "the total estimate of displaced individuals across Sudan has reached 334,053".

IOM spokesperson Paul Dillon, as per Reuters, revealed that the number of people displaced in the last two weeks has exceeded "all conflict-related displacement in Sudan in 2022."

"About 72 per cent, roughly 240,000 of these new internal displacements were reported in West and South Darfur alone," he told reporters.

"In many cases, the small convoys are in a sense running the gauntlet between warring factions and it's an extremely difficult and dangerous situation for those who are embarking on these journeys," said Dillon.

The ongoing armed conflict between two generals — General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Chief General Mohamed Hamdan Dagaloofof the paramilitary group RSF — began on April 15th. It has already crossed into the third week, and since it started, the conflict has resulted in the death of at least 528 people. As per estimates by the Sudanese health ministry, an additional 4,599 have been injured in the fighting.

On Monday, a total of 186 Indians from Sudan arrived in southern India's Kochi city in Kerala state.

"OperationKaveri continues to bring Indians back home. Flight carrying 186 passengers touches down in Kochi," Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Official Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi tweeted on Monday.

Earlier on Sunday, India's Foreign Minister Dr S. Jaishankar said that nearly 2,300 evacuee Indians have reached India.

"A C-130 Indian Air Force flight has landed in New Delhi with 40 passengers. With this flight, around 2,300 people have reached India," Jaishankar tweeted.

The Indian government is working to evacuate nearly 3,000 Indians from conflict-ridden Sudan, of which so far more than 2,500 have been successfully moved out.&nbsp;

On Monday, three more flights carried 229, 288 and 135 Indian citizens from Sudan.

Sudan's army and its paramilitary Rapid Support Force (RSF) are battling out intense armed combat across the Sub-Saharan nation.

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General &nbsp;Antonio Guterres was sending an envoy to Sudan amid the "unprecedented" situation in the conflict-torn country, his spokesperson said on Sunday (April 30), the news agency AFP reported early Monday. UN emergency relief coordinator Martin Griffiths would serve as the envoy. Announcing Griffiths' deployment, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said that the envoy would travel to the region immediately. "The scale and speed of what is unfolding is unprecedented in Sudan," Dujarric said in a statement, adding the UN was extremely concerned.&nbsp;

Griffiths, meanwhile, said that Sudan's humanitarian situation was reaching breaking point. "I am on my way to the region to explore how we can bring immediate relief to the millions of people whose lives have turned upside down overnight," Griffiths said.&nbsp;

The envoy pointed out that families were struggling to access water, food, fuel, and other commodities, with some unable to relocate due to the cost of transportation out of the worst-hit areas. He further said that urgent healthcare was severely constrained, increasing the risk of preventable death.&nbsp;

Earlier, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that Sudan was collapsing and there was no right to go on fighting for power. "There is no right to go on fighting for power when the country is falling apart," Guterres told Al Arabiya television, AFP reported on Sunday.&nbsp;

Sudan conflict: UN chief sending envoy to nation as fighting continues

A family fleeing conflict-torn Sudan said they are among thousands of people stuck at the Egypt border as drivers are demanding $40,000 to hire a bus to travel across, according to a report by BBC on Saturday (April 29). The family had escaped the fighting in Sudan's capital city Khartoum. Speaking to the BBC from the border town of Wadi Halfa, Fadi Atabani said his family, which includes an 88-year-old woman, were trapped.&nbsp;

"There are thousands of people here. There is no accommodation. People are sleeping in schools or [on] mattresses," Atabani said. As per the report, most of the family members have British nationality and Atabani has been appealing to authorities in the United Kingdom (UK) for help.&nbsp;

"I cannot guarantee my children's medical health here we are in the middle of the desert. I want the British government to assist me in evacuating or a bus which can get us across the border," Atabani said and accused local bus drivers of taking advantage of the desperate situation travellers have found themselves in.&nbsp;

He said that normally, the cost of hiring a bus is $3,000, but at present people are paying $40,000.&nbsp;

"Who has that sort of money? The banks were closed, ATM machines are not working," he further told the BBC.&nbsp;

Hosna, a resident of Khartoum, said she had two daughters trapped in Sudan's capital city. Hosna said her daughters had to pay $400 each to travel to the border compared to $25 before the conflict in Sudan began on April 15. The woman arrived in Egypt Aswan's city before the fighting started.&nbsp;

"My daughters saw an artillery shell fall in our neighbourhood. I could not bring them here. I don't have a husband or a son to help them. I work day in and day out to save money," she added.&nbsp;

Esraa Bani, a Sudanese-American academic, who flew to the Egyptian city to help people arriving, said the bus prices increased astronomically.&nbsp;

Fighting in Sudan is raging despite the two warring factions — Sudan's army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) — agreeing to extend the ceasefire by another 72 hours. On Saturday, warplanes on bombing raids drew heavy anti-aircraft fire over Khartoum. 
 
Speaking to the news agency AFP, a witness in southern Khartoum said, "We woke up once again to the sound of fighter jets and anti-aircraft weapons blasting all over our neighbourhood."

Another witness, meanwhile, told AFP that fighting has been going on since early morning, especially around the state broadcaster's headquarters in Omdurman.

"Our forces have remained strictly committed to the humanitarian truce that we agreed upon since midnight, and it is not true that we targeted any aircraft in the sky of Wadi Seyidna in Omdurman," the RSF said in a statement.

Indian Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said on Thursday (April 27) that there are approximately 3,500 Indians and 1,000 Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) in Sudan, adding that New Delhi is constantly monitoring the situation in the conflict-torn country. Addressing a press conference, Foreign Secretary Kwatra said, "Our estimate is that there are approximately 3500 Indians &amp; 1000 PIOs in Sudan."

"As we speak, we have a situation that roughly 600 Indian nationals have either arrived in India or are on their way. So, 360 of them arrived on a Saudi Arabia flight yesterday night. Another 246 (Indian nationals) are being flown to Maharashtra. Approximately, 495 Indian nationals were in Jeddah as of now. These numbers will either go up or come down depending upon the evacuations," Kwatra added.&nbsp;

The Indian government has launched "Operation Kaveri" to bring back Indians stranded in Sudan. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/watch-touchdown-delhi-360-indians-evacuated-from-war-torn-sudan-reach-capital-via-flight-586441">On Wednesday night</a>, the first aircraft carrying 360 Indians to Saudi Arabia from Sudan took off from Jeddah Airport and arrived in New Delhi. Taking to Twitter, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar said, "India welcomes back its own. Operation Kaveri brings 360 Indian Nationals to the homeland as first flight reaches New Delhi."

And on Thursday, Union Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan said that as many as 128 Indians arrived in Saudi Arabia's&nbsp;Jeddah.&nbsp;

"Another IAF C-130J flight under #OperationKaveri arrived at Jeddah with 128 Indians, the fourth aircraft from Sudan. Efforts are on to ensure that all Indians, who arrived in Jeddah will be sent to India at the earliest," Muraleedharan tweeted.&nbsp;

Also on Wednesday- the second day of the initial agreed ceasefire- witnesses reported heavy air strikes in East Nile. Speaking to the news agency AFP, &nbsp;the witnesses said that warplanes flew over the northern suburbs of Khartoum, drawing heavy anti-aircraft fire from the paramilitaries.&nbsp;

In southern Khartoum, machinegun fire was reported near one of the homes owned by paramilitary commander Mohamed Hamdan, who is leading the RSF against the armed forces.&nbsp;

Approximately 3,500 Indians in conflict-torn Sudan, New Delhi monitoring situation: Foreign Secretary Kwatra

The Indian government is continuing its efforts to evacuate citizens trapped in Sudan. Under operation Kaveri, the first flight of 360 evacuees from Sudan arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday. Till now, five batches of Indians trapped in Sudan have been evacuated. The fifth batch left from port Sudan and is on its way to Jeddah.

Britain, which has estimated that about 4,000 of its nationals are in Sudan, said military flights would depart from an airfield outside Khartoum, and would be open to those with British passports.

Meanwhile the UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said that more than 1,000 people in Sudan have contacted British overseas officials in the country. Sunak added that there would be "many more" evacuation flights that will rescue British nationals from the conflict-ridden nation.

Cyprus's foreign ministry said the first British civilians evacuated from Sudan had arrived on the island on Tuesday, with about 40 civilians on board a plane belonging to Britain's Royal Air Force.

Sunak's spokesman earlier said flights would continue for as long as possible and British nationals would be taken to Cyprus, with the government facilitating their travel on to Britain.

Cyprus, a former colony and home to two sprawling British military bases, said it had activated a humanitarian rescue mechanism following a British request and would offer reception facilities for the evacuation of third-country civilians.

Sunak said that Britain was exploring other options for evacuations, including Port Sudan.

"We can't guarantee the long term sustainability of the airfield that we're currently using. So we're also exploring and standing up other alternative routes for safe exit from Sudan," Sunak said.

Sudanese and foreign nationals are streaming out of the capital of Khartoum and surrounding battle zones.

The impending ceasefire will be the&nbsp;third of its kind announced in recent days by Sudan's warring sides. The two previous ones either failed outright or led to a brief halt in fighting during which foreign missions managed to find a window to evacuate their citizens via air and sea routes.

The whereabouts of Bashir came into question after Ali Haroun, a minister in his government, said on Tuesday that he left the prison with other ex-officials.&nbsp;

The warring factions agreed to a 72-hour ceasefire starting Tuesday. However, on Wednesday, the ceasefire remained fragile after there were reports of fresh air strikes and paramilitaries claimed to have seized a major oil refinery and power plant.

Darfur inhabitants fear that the ongoing conflict could reawaken war in the region. Reuters reported on Wednesday that as the unrest began in Khartoum, the violence quickly spread to Darfur. Residents reported pillaging, ethnic reprisal attacks, and clashes between the SAF and the RSF in various population centres around Darfur.&nbsp;

Will Carter, the head of the Norwegian Refugee Council in Sudan, said, "Whichever way the current battle for Khartoum goes, we expect a bloodier conflict now in the Darfur region - more armed groups, more weapons, deeper enmities."

As per figures from UN agencies, at least 459 people have been killed and more than 4,000 wounded in the ongoing conflict. Several countries including the United States (US), the United Kingdom (UK), <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/operation-sumedha-unfolds-first-batch-of-indians-evacuated-from-sudan-reach-jeddah-586151">India </a>and China have scrambled to evacuate embassy staff and citizens from Sudan.&nbsp;

Operation Kaveri was launched by the government of India on Monday. Under it, India aims to evacuate close to 3,000 Indian citizens stranded in Sudan.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while announcing the operation at a public event in Kerala, said that he has instructed junior external affairs minister V Muraleedharan to travel to the region to supervise Operation Kaveri.

While addressing the Yuvam Conclave in Kochi, he said, "Due to the civil war in Sudan, many of our people are stuck there. Therefore, we have started Operation Kaveri to bring them safely. It is being overseen by the son of Kerala and the Minister of our government, Muraleedharan."

But in the initial hours,&nbsp;a wider sense of skepticism has been expressed over the latest ceasefire announcement&nbsp;since two of the&nbsp;previously announced ceasefires were not respected by either side.

At least 400 people have been killed since fighting erupted on April 15.

UN Secretary General António Guterres has warned the clashes in Sudan may cause a "catastrophic conflagration" of violence that may amplify deep into Africa in the immediate future.

The RSF said they affirmed their "commitment to a complete ceasefire during the truce period". The army did not immediately comment on the development.

The locals and the foreigners living in the capital Khartoum have been told to stay indoors. The food and water supplies continue to run low as the continuous explosions from the conflict have hit key infrastructure such as water pipes.

A host of countries are struggling&nbsp;to evacuate their diplomats and civilians as fighting continues&nbsp;in the&nbsp;densely populated parts of the capital Khartoum.

Earlier on Monday, Blinken said that some convoys trying to move people out were faced with "robbery and looting".

Sudan is suffering an "internet blackout" with connectivity at 2 per cent&nbsp;of ordinary levels, monitoring group NetBlocks was quoted as saying by the BBC.

In Khartoum, the internet has been down since Sunday night.

So far, thousands of people, including the Sudanese citizens have fled the country since the onset of the conflict.

The Sudanese army and the RSF were jointly running the country since October 2021 after deposing President Omar al-Bashir.

They banded together a Sovereign Council, led by Army Chief General Abdel al-Burhan and co-led by RSF Chief General Mohamed Hamdan.&nbsp;

The Sudanese army proposed RSF's integration into itself within a timeline of two years, a move RSF wanted to delay for 10 years.

The army also supports the transfer of power to a civilian government, another point of contention between the two erstwhile Sovereign Council members.

The RSF chief Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo claims to have seized most of the official sites in the capital Khartoum. So far, the RSF appears to be calling the diplomatic shots as one seen to be purportedly in control of Africa's third largest nation.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that Sudan's warring generals had agreed to a three-day ceasefire starting Tuesday, after previous bids to pause the conflict quickly disintegrated.

The World Health Organization on Tuesday warned of a "huge biological risk" after fighters in conflict-ravaged Sudan occupied a central public laboratory.

As per an AFP report, the laboratory was holding samples of diseases including polio and measles, and it being seized created an "extremely, extremely dangerous" situation.

Talking to reporters in Geneva via video link, Nima Saeed Abid, the WHO's representative in Sudan, said "There is a huge biological risk associated with the occupation of the central public health lab... by one of the fighting parties."

As per Abid, fighters "kicked out all the technicians from the lab... which is completely under the control of one of the fighting parties as a military base." However, he did not mention which side has seized the bio lab.

Abid reportedly received a call from the head of the national laboratory in Khartoum on Monday, a day before the US-brokered 72-hour ceasefire between Sudan's warring generals officially came into effect.

Pointing out that the lab held so-called isolates, or samples, of a range of deadly diseases, including measles, polio and cholera, he said: "There is a huge biological risk associated with the occupation of the central public health lab."

The lab director also warned Abid that "depleting stocks of blood bags risk spoiling due to lack of power."

"In addition to chemical hazards, bio-risk hazards are also very high due to lack of functioning generators," said the WHO Sudan representative.

Since it began 10 days ago, as per the UN health agency, there have been confirmed 14 attacks on healthcare, in which eight people have been killed and two were injured.

European Union's (EU) top diplomat Josep Borrell said on Monday (April 24) that the EU would keep working for a political settlement <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/sudan-conflict-egypt-says-embassy-staff-killed-in-khartoum-585881">to the conflict in Sudan</a> despite the recent evacuation of diplomatic staff and other EU citizens from the country. "We have to continue pushing for a political settlement. We cannot afford that Sudan implodes because it would send shockwaves throughout the whole of Africa," Borrell said ahead of a meeting with EU foreign ministers, the news agency Reuters reported.&nbsp;

"It has been a complex operation and it has been a successful operation. First, the staff of the European Union, 21 people, are already in Europe and many more European Union citizens and others are already out of Sudan. I cannot give you a concrete figure, more than 1,000 people for sure. I want to thank France, especially for taking our people out and I want to thank the combined efforts of many countries that took their national(s), but also all nationals that they could pick. So it has been a successful operation, but complex," Borrell added.&nbsp;

Borrell also pointed out that the EU's ambassador to Sudan Aidan O'Hara was still in the country. "The captain is the last one leaving the ship. He is in Sudan but no longer in Khartoum," the top diplomat added.&nbsp;

On April 17, Josep Borrell had said that O'Hara, an Irish diplomat, was attacked in his home in Khartoum.&nbsp;

"A few hours ago, the EU Ambassador in Sudan was assaulted in his own residency," Borrell tweeted and added that the security of diplomatic premises and the staff was a primary responsibility of Sudanese authorities and an obligation under international law.&nbsp;

Speaking to the news agency AFP, EU spokesperson Nabila Massrali said that O'Hara was ok following the assault.&nbsp;

Ireland's deputy premier Micheal Martin also said that O'Hara was "not seriously hurt" but that the assault was "a gross violation of obligations to protect diplomats under the Vienna Convention".&nbsp;

The fighting in Sudan between the army and Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which started on April 15, is currently under a 72-hour ceasefire. The United States and Saudi Arabia mediated the truce.&nbsp;

Top EU diplomat says ambassador to Sudan still in conflict-torn country

Egypt's foreign ministry said on Monday (April 24) that the administrative attache at its embassy in Sudan was killed amid fighting between rival military factions in Khartoum. In a statement, the foreign ministry said Muhammad El Gharrawi was killed as he was driving to the embassy to follow up on the procedures of the evacuations of the Egyptians stranded in Sudan. Taking to Twitter, foreign ministry spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid condoled El Gharrawi's death.&nbsp;

"The deceased (Muhammad El Gharrawi) was martyred on his way to the embassy headquarters to follow up on the tasks of evacuating the Egyptian citizens. May God have mercy on our dear deceased," Zeid tweeted early Tuesday.&nbsp;

According to a report by the news agency Reuters, the Sudanese army had earlier stated Egypt's assistant military attache was killed. The army then corrected its statement, saying the administrative attache was killed by fire from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Two days ago, the Egyptian foreign ministry instructed citizens in Sudan to evacuate the conflict-torn country. A report by Egyptian Streets on Sunday said the ministry instructed citizens outside Sudan's capital Khartoum to head to the nearest specified meeting point in preparation for their evacuation.&nbsp;

For Egyptians in Khartoum, the ministry advised them to stay indoors until the security situation improved to allow for the procedure in line with the general evacuation plan.

Several countries including Italy, Japan, and Greece started evacuating their citizens amid the eruption of violence in Sudan on April 15. On Tuesday, Britain started a large-scale evacuation&nbsp;of its citizens from the North African country.&nbsp;

"The government has begun a large-scale evacuation of British passport holders from&nbsp;Sudan&nbsp;on RAF flights," Prime Minister Rishi Sunak tweeted.&nbsp;

According to agencies of the United Nations, over 400 people have been killed and more than 3,700 wounded so far. And more than 4,000 people have fled Sudan in foreign-organised evacuations.&nbsp;

The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and RSF agreed to a 72-hour ceasefire starting Tuesday. The SAF said that the United States and Saudi Arabia mediated the truce.

The RSF confirmed that it agreed to the ceasefire to facilitate humanitarian efforts. "We affirm our commitment to a complete ceasefire during the truce period", the RSF said.&nbsp;

"This ceasefire aims to establish humanitarian corridors, allowing citizens and residents to access essential resources, healthcare, and safe zones, while also evacuating diplomatic missions," it tweeted. &nbsp;

The SAF, meanwhile, said on Facebook that it would abide by the ceasefire on condition its rivals did so.
