Air strikes kill 17 in Khartoum The conflict in Sudan has been going on since April 15 with multiple truces agreed and broken. On Saturday, 17 civilians including five children were killed in air strikes in Khartoum, the news agency AFP reported citing a citizens' support committee. Earlier, Khartoum residents reported air strikes around Yarmouk, which is home to a weapons manufacturing and arms depot complex where the RSF claimed "full control" in early June. And on Friday, deputy army chief Yasser Atta warned civilians to keep away from houses where the RSF were located because the army "will attack them at any time". Previously, a 24-hour ceasefire from June 10-11 provided Khartoum's residents with some relief from air strikes and artillery exchanges that ravaged neighbourhoods across the capital city. However, fighting resumed within 10 minutes of the ceasefire ending. An influx of injured people in Chad's hospitals On Saturday, medics in Chad said that they were overwhelmed by hundreds of wounded people fleeing Sudan's Darfur region. "We are overwhelmed in the operating theatre. We urgently need more beds and more staff," said Seybou Diarra, a physician and project coordinator in Adre, Chad, for the Doctors Without Borders (MSF) charity, AFP reported. In a statement, the MSF said that as violence raged in West Darfur, wounded people were coming in waves to the hospital in Adre. Over 600 patients, most with gunshot wounds, arrived at the facility over three days -- more than half of them on Friday, the statement added. The UN refugee agency chief Filippo Grandi, during a press conference, said, "We have 110 million people that have fled because of conflict, persecution, discrimination and violence, often mixed with other motives -- in particular the impact of climate change." He added that it's quite an indictment of the state of our world.&nbsp;

Last year, the agency in its Global Trends in Forced Displacement report&nbsp;stated that 108.4 million people were displaced. It&nbsp;added that recent Sudan's conflict triggered further displacement reaching 110 million.&nbsp;

The number was 19.1 million up from 2021, making it to be the biggest increase since the records began in 1975. Stating data for 2022, Grandi said that globally 35.3 million refugees fled abroad, with 62.5 million displaced internally.

<h2>Numbers likely to increase</h2>

The UNHCR chief Grandi expressed his fear that the numbers might increase in the coming months and years.&nbsp;

He said that the swelling displacement this year might increase but they'll ensure a "more hostile" environment for refugees. "Leadership is about convincing your public opinion that there are people that deserve international protection."

The chief added that countries need to remain open so that people can seek shelter and asylum to feel safe.&nbsp;

Grandi said that the refugee agency is not in a good financial situation this year. He said that it has only 16 per cent fund needed for Sudan&nbsp;and&nbsp;added that the fight in Sudan might continue for a while.&nbsp;

Officials predict that some 467,000 people have fled Sudan since the fighting between parties broke out in April, while over 1.4 million have become internally displaced.&nbsp;

The countries hosting the most refugees are Turkey (3.6 million), Iran (3.4 million), Colombia (2.5 million), Germany (2.1 million) and Pakistan (1.7 million).&nbsp;

However, last year, over 390,000 refugees returned back to 38 countries, while some 5.7 million internally displaced people returned home.&nbsp;

The fighting that broke out between the Sudanese army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) chief Mohamed Hamdan Daglo has been going on for nearly two months now, and has since killed thousands and displaced millions.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Egypt has announced a new policy which would require all citizens of neighbouring Sudan to obtain visas before entering their border, said the foreign ministry, on Saturday, citing a crackdown on “illegal activities” including fraud.

<h2>What is happening in Sudan?</h2>

In a series of attempted and failed truces and ceasefires, the one that recently expired offered some respite to the residents in the capital city of Khartoum who were able to leave their houses and stock up on food and other essentials.

Additionally, people in the country have also said that the fighting has intensified in recent weeks including in the densely populated neighbourhood of Haj Youssef in Bahri.&nbsp;Bahri is one of three adjoining cities, along with Khartoum and Omdurman.

Notably, the ceasefire had been announced by the United States and Saudi Arabia mediators who said if they failed to adhere to it, it may break off mediation efforts.&nbsp;

This comes as several ceasefire agreements have been violated and both sides blamed each other for doing so. The mediators said they “share the frustration of the Sudanese people about the uneven implementation of previous ceasefires”.&nbsp;

<h2>Fighting continues after brief respite</h2>

The ceasefire ended at 6:00 am (local time) and as per reports only minutes later, on Sunday, the capital city was rocked with explosions from shelling and clashes. The artillery fire resumed in the north of Omdurman while clashes erupted in southern and central Khartoum, reported Reuters, citing residents.&nbsp;

The one-day lull was “like a dream” that evaporated, said Nasreddin Ahmed, a resident of south Khartoum, as per AFP. Similarly, Musab Saleh, a 38-year-old resident of southern Khartoum, said that the “truce made us relax a bit, but the war and fear are returning today,” reported Reuters.&nbsp;

<h2>Egypt toughens visa restrictions for Sudan</h2>

The Egyptian foreign ministry announced new visa restrictions for Sudanese citizens which has reversed the longstanding exemption for children, women and elderly men. According to the local monitoring group, at least 1,800 people have died due to the fighting, while more than 1.9 million have been displaced.&nbsp;

Thousands of people have fled Sudan and taken refuge in neighbouring countries,&nbsp;including&nbsp; Egypt where more than 200,000 people are reported to have fled since the conflict began. As per the new rules, those Sudanese who had previously been exempted from visas which included women of all ages, children under 16 and anyone over 50.

However, the ministry has stressed that the new requirements were not designed to “prevent or limit” the entry of Sudanese nationals but rather to stop “illegal activities by individuals and groups on the Sudanese side of the border, who forged entry visas” for profit.&nbsp;

It added, “Egypt has welcomed more than 200,000 Sudanese citizens since the start of the crisis…adding to the approximately five million Sudanese citizens who were already present (before the conflict).”&nbsp;

The conflict has also displaced over 1.3 million people. According to the United Nations’ children agency, over 700 people have been killed, out of which 190 were children, while&nbsp;6,000 others were injured.

According to a report by the Associated Press, residents have reported sporadic clashes and army aircraft were seen flying over the city on Sunday in parts of Omdurman.

Meanwhile, the detention of Dr. Alaa Eldin Awad Nogoud, a prominent surgeon and pro-democracy activist, in Omdurman, has sparked outrage among medical and rights groups in and outside of Sudan, as per the media report.&nbsp;

A group of armed men stormed Nogoud’s home Sunday and detained him, said Sudan Doctors’ Syndicate, adding that he has been taken to an unknown location. The armed men claimed to be members of the military and the intelligence service, said Forces of Freedom and Change, the pro-democracy coalition.&nbsp;

Perthes, who was nominated to his position in 2021, has expressed deep worry about the dispute. He criticised both leaders of Sudan's warring groups in a presentation to the UN Security Council earlier this week, warning of "a growing ethnicisation of the conflict."

Despite a seven-day truce that is set to expire this weekend, combat between both sides has persisted. According to the US embassy in Khartoum, media have lately witnessed the use of artillery and military aircraft and drones, airstrikes, prolonged combat in the heart of the Khartoum Industrial Area, and battles in Zalingei, Darfur.

Over a million people have been displaced, seeking refuge in rural regions, neighbouring Sudanese states, or crossing Sudanese borders.

Sudan's army on Friday (May 26) called for reservists and retired soldiers to enlist again. It is being seen as a move aimed at expanding its numbers as a deadly conflict rages in the country. The move may fuel fighting in spite of a truce. Initially, the army said that all retired soldiers and able men should arm themselves for self-defence. However, it later clarified and called on ex-soldiers to visit nearest military base.

Reuters said that it was not clear from the statement whether the summons was compulsory or voluntary. Sudan has military service but the wording of the statement reportedly appeared to suggest that only former full-time soldiers were included.

The move has come as Saudi Arabia and the US said that both sides in the conflict were complying well with the ceasefire. It was brokered by these two countries which are monitoring the situation. Saudi and US representatives "cautioned the parties against further violations and implored them to improve respect for the ceasefire on May 25, which they did," it added.

Civilians who have stayed in Khartoum since the fighting broke out have suffered as basic services like electricty, water, heath and communications have been disrupted.

Many homes, particularly in well-off areas, have been looted, along with food stores, flour mills and other essential facilities.

"It's all part of the chaos of this war," said Taysir Abdelrahim, who found out from abroad her home was looted. "Even if we were in Sudan there's nothing you can do about it."

<h2>RSF denies looting</h2>

The RSF have denied allegations of looting and instead have blamed it on people who it says has stolen its uniforms. RSF fighters are largely bunkered down in Khartoum neighbourhoods. While the Sudan army is manily relying on air power.&nbsp;

Sudan army calls on former soldiers to enlist again

The conflict in Sudan has put the lives of millions of children at risk. Thousands have escaped but many are still trapped in the escalating violence. The UN’s children's agency says the closure of schools has also affected their mental health and well-being, and says the country is facing what it calls a 'generational catastrophe'.

The United Nations warned on Monday that the Sudan conflict can turn into an ethnically driven conflict if warring parties didn't respect and extend the ceasefire beginning Monday (May 22).

"The growing ethnicization of the conflict risks to expand and prolong it with implications for the region," UN special envoy to Sudan Volker Perthes told the UN Security Council.

Perthes was speaking just hours before a one-week ceasefire was to begin between the two factions. He said that there were already signs that the fighting was threatening to split Sudan along ethnic and communal lines.

Those have only grown recently, he said.&nbsp;

"In parts of the country, fighting between the two armies or the two armed formations has sharpened into communal tensions, or triggered conflict between communities," he said. &nbsp;

"Warning signs of tribal mobilisation are also reported in other parts of the country, particularly in South Kordofan," he said.

He said that after establishing a ceasefire that holds, the UN's number two priority is "preventing the escalation or ethnicisation of the conflict."

Perthes called the ceasefire, agreed on Saturday and set to begin at 9:45 pm (1945 GMT) on Monday, a "welcome development," even though fighting continued through the day on Monday.

"I continue to urge the parties to honour this agreement which they signed two days ago. They must stop the fighting. They must allow access for humanitarian relief, protect humanitarian workers and assets," he said.

The United States and Saudi Arabia on Sunday announced that the ceasefire agreed between the rival camps would take effect at 9:45 pm (1945 GMT) Monday to enable humanitarian assistance to civilians.

Unlike truces previously announced, the US and Saudi said this one is different because it was "signed by the parties" and will be supported by a "ceasefire monitoring mechanism".

Desperate residents voiced hope that the new agreement would stem the brutal warfare that has shaken the capital Khartoum and other parts of the impoverished country, particularly the western Darfur region.

Fighting erupted on April 15 between the army, led by Sudan's de facto leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces commanded by Burhan's former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.

Fighting continued on Monday morning with loud explosions heard across Khartoum. Speaking to AFP, a southern Khartoum resident said, "The situation is becoming worse by the day. People are getting more and more scared because the two sides... are becoming more and more violent."

Over 750 people have died in the conflict with thousands more wounded and nearly a million people displaced, according to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project.

Last week, the United Nations (UN) said that around 200,000 people fled Sudan in the month of fighting. "As violence in Sudan continues for a fourth week, nearly 200,000 refugees and returnees have been forced to flee the country, with more crossing borders daily seeking safety," UN refugee agency spokesperson Olga Sarrado told reporters on May 12.&nbsp;

Worshippers were attacked in a church during mass on Sunday (May 14) as the fighting between Sudan's army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has been going on for a month. Five people were injured including a priest, and the warring factions blamed each other for the attack on the Mar Girgis (St George) Church in Omdurman. In a statement, Army Chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan said the paramilitary forces fired bullets at Christian worshippers at the church, the news agency AFP reported. The RSF, meanwhile, blamed the army for the attack "that caused serious injuries among worshippers." In a statement, the RSF said that an extremist group affiliated with the army was responsible. Christians in Sudan have suffered decades of persecution under Omar al-Bashir's regime, and several high-ranking officials of which returned to power following a coup in 2021. However, Christian leaders have said the figure is much higher. The conflict in Sudan started on April 15 between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, who now leads the RSF. And on Monday, the conflict entered its first month with no end to the fighting in sight despite multiple truce deals between the warring factions. Sudan's capital city Khartoum has become a desolate war zone with gun battles raging in the dusty, deserted streets outside. Fighting continued on Monday morning with loud explosions heard across Khartoum. Speaking to AFP, a southern Khartoum resident said, "The situation is becoming worse by the day. People are getting more and more scared because the two sides... are becoming more and more violent." Over 750 people have died in the conflict with thousands more wounded and nearly a million people displaced, according to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project. Last week, the United Nations (UN) said that around 200,000 people fled Sudan in the month of fighting. "As violence in Sudan continues for a fourth week, nearly 200,000 refugees and returnees have been forced to flee the country, with more crossing borders daily seeking safety," UN refugee agency spokesperson Olga Sarrado told reporters on May 12. Morning brief: Russia suspends operations at Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, air strikes continue in Sudan, & more

The United Nations said on Tuesday (May 9) that heavy fighting in Sudan has displaced more than 700,000 people in the country since mid-April, adding the figure doubled in a week. Addressing a press conference in Geneva, Paul Dillon, a spokesperson for the UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM) said, "There are now more than 700,000 internally displaced by the fighting which began on April 15. Last Tuesday, the figure stood at 340,000."

Dillon pointed out that even before the conflict started on April 15, 3.7 million people were registered as internally displaced in Sudan. He said that many internally displaced persons (IDPs) are sheltering with relatives, while others are gathering in schools, mosques and public buildings.

The IOM spokesperson further said that the agency was conscious of the enormous pressures placed on host communities already suffering from the effects of over three weeks of fighting.&nbsp;

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHRC) said that another 150,000 people fled Sudan since the fighting started between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).&nbsp;

The UN has estimated that five million additional people would need emergency assistance inside Sudan, while 860,000 people are expected to flee to neighbouring states.

During Tuesday's briefing, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that 604 people have been killed and over 5,000 injured so far.&nbsp;

The conflict in the North African country rages on as&nbsp;negotiations between the warring factions have yielded no major progress. Despite several ceasefires, tensions and deadly fighting persist in Khartoum and other areas.

Last Saturday (May 6), both factions sent their envoys to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for peace talks. But there has been no word on the progress of these talks.&nbsp;

On Monday, Sudanese Special Envoy Dafallah al-Haj met South Sudan President Salva Kiir. The talks with President Kiir were aimed at fostering a lasting ceasefire and granting safe passage to humanitarian support as well as providing&nbsp;an escape corridor for fleeing civilians.

Following the meeting, Dafallah al-Haj told reporters that Sudan's army was in full control. "The elements of the Rapid Deployment Force, the rebellion, have infiltrated inside the civilian quarters and they are now taking, considering, or actually occupying hospitals. That is why the army does not want to go aggressively because of the safety of the civilians," he said.&nbsp;

According to the Indian Air Force, the C-17 aircraft departed from the Hindon Air Force Station, near New Delhi, on the intervening night of May 3rd and 4th.&nbsp;The heavy-lifter aircraft made a pit stop in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where keeping in mind the challenges of refuelling in its conflict-hit destination, Sudan, it tanked up on extra fuel.

This mission was undertaken to repatriate 192 passengers - mostly women, children and elderly individuals, who were either NRIs, foreign nationals or OCIs (Overseas Citizens of India). The military aircraft had to fly from Jeddah to Sudan and then directly back to India in a non-stop flight, as the passengers were not permitted to land in Jeddah.

Given the ongoing conflict in Sudan, the military aircraft performing repatriation flights are landing at their own risk and must undertake necessary measures for their safety. As part of the daring mission, the C-17 aircrew, as per the IAF, "carried out an overhead steep tactical arrival followed by an assault approach to land the heavy jet."&nbsp;

IAF Spokesperson Wing Commander Ashish Moghe explained to WION that the steep landings are performed in order to safeguard from the threats of small-arms fire from the ground.&nbsp;

He added that the angle of approach during such a landing would be higher than that of a conventional landing. As the aircraft stood on the tarmac and passengers boarded, the plane's engines were kept running in precautionary anticipation of a quick exit. &nbsp;

While flying back from Sudan to India, the C-17 crew faced another unplanned emergency when one of the passengers fell unconscious. However, the crew immediately handled the situation and stabilised the patient by providing him with oxygen. IAF said that the C-17 carrying 192 passengers from Sudan landed at Ahmedabad late Thursday evening and then at the home base of Hindon, later that night. The C-17 Globemaster III flew close to 9600 km as part of this mission, with the aircrew flying extended duty periods of nearly 24 hours.

IAF pulls off 24hr non-stop rescue mission; flies 9600 km to rescue 192 from conflict-stricken Sudan

British people trapped in Sudan have said they are being forced to make hard choices about whether to fly home without their family members the United Kingdom (UK)&nbsp;government would not allow on flights. This news comes as the government ended its evacuation efforts from the conflict-torn country, after extracting over 2,450 people on dozens of flights.&nbsp;

According to a report by The Guardian on Thursday (May 4), a growing number of British citizens and their children, or Sudanese citizens with British children, have decided to stay in Sudan as their family members have not been allowed to board evacuation flights.&nbsp;

Speaking to The Guardian, Suleiman, a British national, said that a UK government official called him to say that he could be evacuated with his two children only if he left his pregnant wife behind. His children are British nationals, but their mother is a Sudanese citizen.

“He said: ‘I’m sorry, you’re going to fly with your children, but your wife cannot.’ When I told him that’s impossible, the children are dependent on their mother and I can’t leave my wife who has a high-risk pregnancy, he just refused and said that’s all I can do,” Suleiman said, as quoted by The Guardian.

Suleiman decided to remain in Sudan with his children and wife, fearing that the journey to Port Sudan might endanger his wife.&nbsp;

Another British citizen- Roza Mohamed, said how her Sudanese sister Amina, and her three-year-old niece Samrin, were prevented from boarding an evacuation flight out of Port Sudan as Amina lacked a UK visa and was not able to prove Samrin's British citizenship obtained via her father.&nbsp;

The report also pointed out that in some cases, British officials gave the parents of young children visas and allowed them to board. But in others, they turned them away and it is not yet clear why these cases were treated differently.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, some children with British passports were prevented from boarding evacuation flights as their accompanying parents lacked UK visas which were later provided by officials after pressure from British nationals in the UK.&nbsp;

According to a report by The Guardian on Thursday (May 4), a growing number of British citizens and their children, or Sudanese citizens with British children, have decided to stay in Sudan as their family members have not been allowed to board evacuation flights. His children are British nationals, but their mother is a Sudanese citizen. “He said: ‘I’m sorry, you’re going to fly with your children, but your wife cannot.’ When I told him that’s impossible, the children are dependent on their mother and I can’t leave my wife who has a high-risk pregnancy, he just refused and said that’s all I can do,” Suleiman said, as quoted by The Guardian. Suleiman decided to remain in Sudan with his children and wife, fearing that the journey to Port Sudan might endanger his wife. Another British citizen- Roza Mohamed, said how her Sudanese sister Amina, and her three-year-old niece Samrin, were prevented from boarding an evacuation flight out of Port Sudan as Amina lacked a UK visa and was not able to prove Samrin's British citizenship obtained via her father. The report also pointed out that in some cases, British officials gave the parents of young children visas and allowed them to board. But in others, they turned them away and it is not yet clear why these cases were treated differently. "I join the peace-loving people of Sudan and leaders around the world in calling for a durable ceasefire between the belligerent parties. This violence, which has already stolen the lives of hundreds of civilians and began during the holy month of Ramadan, is unconscionable. It must end," Biden said.&nbsp;

Biden also talked about American efforts for the safe departure of thousands of people - Americans and others from Sudan.&nbsp;

"Our diplomatic efforts to urge all parties to end the military conflict and allow unhindered humanitarian access continue, as do our efforts to assist those remaining Americans, including by providing them information on exit options," Biden further said and highlighted that Washington stands ready to support enhanced humanitarian assistance when conditions allow.

The conflict in Sudan between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) &nbsp;has been going on since April 15. The fighting rages on despite both sides agreeing to repeated ceasefire deals.

This sudden warfare in the North African nation has killed hundreds of people, forced thousands to flee, and has further destabilised an already restive region.&nbsp;

On Thursday, clashes were reported in Khartoum and its adjoining cities of Omdurman and Bahri- a violation of the latest seven-day truce agreement. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, the army was trying to push the RSF from positions around the presidential palace and military headquarters.

The United Nations said that it was planning for an outflow of 860,000 people from Sudan and that $445 million would be needed to support them just through October. In a statement, the UN refugee agency said it appealed to donor countries and the funds would go to people fleeing into Chad, South Sudan, Egypt, Ethiopia and the Central African Republic.&nbsp;

Sudan conflict: US Prez Biden says fighting must end, threatens sanctions against those responsible

The ongoing fighting in Sudan has displaced hundreds of thousands of people within the country, and a high number of Sudanese have crossed the borders and entered neighbouring nations. As per a United Nations estimate released on Tuesday, the fighting has caused more than 330,000 people to flee their homes within the country, and over 100,000 people have crossed into neighbouring countries. The numbers are only expected to rise.

As the conflict between Sudan's army and paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continues, the UN's refugee agency the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) estimates that a total of 800,000 people could potentially flee to neighbouring nations, reports AFP.

Briefing the press in Geneva, UNHCR spokesperson Olga Sarrado said that "over 100,000 refugees are estimated to be among those who have now fled Sudan to neighbouring countries, including Sudanese refugees, South Sudanese returning home prematurely, and others who were themselves refugees in Sudan."

The number of internally displaced people as per the UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM) stands at an estimated 334,000. As per a situation report released by the agency: "the total estimate of displaced individuals across Sudan has reached 334,053".

IOM spokesperson Paul Dillon, as per Reuters, revealed that the number of people displaced in the last two weeks has exceeded "all conflict-related displacement in Sudan in 2022."

"About 72 per cent, roughly 240,000 of these new internal displacements were reported in West and South Darfur alone," he told reporters.

"In many cases, the small convoys are in a sense running the gauntlet between warring factions and it's an extremely difficult and dangerous situation for those who are embarking on these journeys," said Dillon.

"The $1.75 billion joint appeal for Sudan in 2023 is only 14 per cent funded. In other words ... (it is) facing a funding gap of $1.5 billion," said the UN humanitarian agency's spokesperson Jens Laerke.

The ongoing armed conflict between two generals — General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Chief General Mohamed Hamdan Dagaloofof the paramilitary group RSF — began on April 15th. It has already crossed into the third week, and since it started, the conflict has resulted in the death of at least 528 people. As per estimates by the Sudanese health ministry, an additional 4,599 have been injured in the fighting.

On Monday, a total of 186 Indians from Sudan arrived in southern India's Kochi city in Kerala state.

"OperationKaveri continues to bring Indians back home. Flight carrying 186 passengers touches down in Kochi," Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Official Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi tweeted on Monday.

Earlier on Sunday, India's Foreign Minister Dr S. Jaishankar said that nearly 2,300 evacuee Indians have reached India.

"A C-130 Indian Air Force flight has landed in New Delhi with 40 passengers. With this flight, around 2,300 people have reached India," Jaishankar tweeted.

The Indian government is working to evacuate nearly 3,000 Indians from conflict-ridden Sudan, of which so far more than 2,500 have been successfully moved out.&nbsp;

On Monday, three more flights carried 229, 288 and 135 Indian citizens from Sudan.

Sudan's army and its paramilitary Rapid Support Force (RSF) are battling out intense armed combat across the Sub-Saharan nation.

The two sides were jointly running the country since October 2021 after deposing President Omar al-Bashir. The two banded together a Sovereign Council, led by Army Chief General Abdel al-Burgan and co-led by the RSF Chief General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.

So far, neither side has gained control of the capital Khartoum.

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General &nbsp;Antonio Guterres was sending an envoy to Sudan amid the "unprecedented" situation in the conflict-torn country, his spokesperson said on Sunday (April 30), the news agency AFP reported early Monday. UN emergency relief coordinator Martin Griffiths would serve as the envoy. Announcing Griffiths' deployment, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said that the envoy would travel to the region immediately. "The scale and speed of what is unfolding is unprecedented in Sudan," Dujarric said in a statement, adding the UN was extremely concerned.&nbsp;

Griffiths, meanwhile, said that Sudan's humanitarian situation was reaching breaking point. "I am on my way to the region to explore how we can bring immediate relief to the millions of people whose lives have turned upside down overnight," Griffiths said.&nbsp;

On Sunday, a Red Cross aircraft laden with humanitarian aid landed in Sudan. According to the International Committee of the Red Cross, eight tonnes of humanitarian cargo included surgical material to "support Sudanese hospitals and volunteers from the Sudan Red Crescent Society."

Sudan conflict: UN chief sending envoy to nation as fighting continues

A family fleeing conflict-torn Sudan said they are among thousands of people stuck at the Egypt border as drivers are demanding $40,000 to hire a bus to travel across, according to a report by BBC on Saturday (April 29). The family had escaped the fighting in Sudan's capital city Khartoum. Speaking to the BBC from the border town of Wadi Halfa, Fadi Atabani said his family, which includes an 88-year-old woman, were trapped.&nbsp;

"There are thousands of people here. There is no accommodation. People are sleeping in schools or [on] mattresses," Atabani said. As per the report, most of the family members have British nationality and Atabani has been appealing to authorities in the United Kingdom (UK) for help.&nbsp;

"I cannot guarantee my children's medical health here we are in the middle of the desert. I want the British government to assist me in evacuating or a bus which can get us across the border," Atabani said and accused local bus drivers of taking advantage of the desperate situation travellers have found themselves in.&nbsp;

He said that normally, the cost of hiring a bus is $3,000, but at present people are paying $40,000.&nbsp;

"Who has that sort of money? The banks were closed, ATM machines are not working," he further told the BBC.&nbsp;

Hosna, a resident of Khartoum, said she had two daughters trapped in Sudan's capital city. Hosna said her daughters had to pay $400 each to travel to the border compared to $25 before the conflict in Sudan began on April 15. The woman arrived in Egypt Aswan's city before the fighting started.&nbsp;

"My daughters saw an artillery shell fall in our neighbourhood. I could not bring them here. I don't have a husband or a son to help them. I work day in and day out to save money," she added.&nbsp;

Esraa Bani, a Sudanese-American academic, who flew to the Egyptian city to help people arriving, said the bus prices increased astronomically.&nbsp;

Fighting in Sudan is raging despite the two warring factions — Sudan's army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) — agreeing to extend the ceasefire by another 72 hours. On Saturday, warplanes on bombing raids drew heavy anti-aircraft fire over Khartoum. 
 
Speaking to the news agency AFP, a witness in southern Khartoum said, "We woke up once again to the sound of fighter jets and anti-aircraft weapons blasting all over our neighbourhood."

Another witness, meanwhile, told AFP that fighting has been going on since early morning, especially around the state broadcaster's headquarters in Omdurman.

Sudan conflict: Bus drivers demanding $40,000 to help people cross Egypt border, says report

Sudan's doctor union said on Friday (April 28) that at least 74 people were killed in the two days of fighting in West Darfur's capital city El Geneina. According to a report by the news agency AFP, the union said these deaths were on Monday and Tuesday.&nbsp;

The union also said that it was still unable to confirm the number of people killed during the rest of the week amid the ongoing clashes. Further details are awaited.&nbsp;

Intense fighting has been reported in Darfur. The Darfur Bar Association said on Friday that fighters were launching rockets at houses in El Geneina. The association said the fighting has spread to nearly the entire city and the fighters looted camps for the displaced and the university hospital, and to markets, public buildings, aid warehouses and banks.&nbsp;

The association further urged to immediately stop this "foolish war" that was being waged on the backs of civilians across Sudan. Earlier the United Nations (UN) said it had reports of the distribution of weapons among local communities in El Geneina.&nbsp;

The conflict in Sudan has been raging despite the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) agreeing to extend the ceasefire for three more days.

The army is led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan while General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo is the leader of the RSF.&nbsp;

On Friday, Sudan's army said that the RSF shot at a Turkish evacuation aircraft as it was landing at the Wadi Seyidna airport outside Khartoum. Turkey's defence ministry confirmed that an evacuation aircraft was fired at and said there were no injuries. The aircraft's fuel system was damaged with the Sudanese army saying it was being repaired.&nbsp;

The RSF, meanwhile, denied firing and accused the army of spreading lies.&nbsp;

"Our forces have remained strictly committed to the humanitarian truce that we agreed upon since midnight, and it is not true that we targeted any aircraft in the sky of Wadi Seyidna in Omdurman," the RSF said in a statement.

Indian Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said on Thursday (April 27) that there are approximately 3,500 Indians and 1,000 Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) in Sudan, adding that New Delhi is constantly monitoring the situation in the conflict-torn country. Addressing a press conference, Foreign Secretary Kwatra said, "Our estimate is that there are approximately 3500 Indians &amp; 1000 PIOs in Sudan."

"As we speak, we have a situation that roughly 600 Indian nationals have either arrived in India or are on their way. So, 360 of them arrived on a Saudi Arabia flight yesterday night. Another 246 (Indian nationals) are being flown to Maharashtra. Approximately, 495 Indian nationals were in Jeddah as of now. These numbers will either go up or come down depending upon the evacuations," Kwatra added.&nbsp;

Taking to Twitter, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar said, "India welcomes back its own. Operation Kaveri brings 360 Indian Nationals to the homeland as first flight reaches New Delhi."

And on Thursday, Union Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan said that as many as 128 Indians arrived in Saudi Arabia's&nbsp;Jeddah.&nbsp;

"Another IAF C-130J flight under #OperationKaveri arrived at Jeddah with 128 Indians, the fourth aircraft from Sudan. Efforts are on to ensure that all Indians, who arrived in Jeddah will be sent to India at the earliest," Muraleedharan tweeted.&nbsp;

In southern Khartoum, machinegun fire was reported near one of the homes owned by paramilitary commander Mohamed Hamdan, who is leading the RSF against the armed forces.&nbsp;

Approximately 3,500 Indians in conflict-torn Sudan, New Delhi monitoring situation: Foreign Secretary Kwatra

The Indian government is continuing its efforts to evacuate citizens trapped in Sudan. Under operation Kaveri, the first flight of 360 evacuees from Sudan arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday. Till now, five batches of Indians trapped in Sudan have been evacuated. The fifth batch left from port Sudan and is on its way to Jeddah.

Britain urged all its nationals to head to the airstrip in the Sudanese capital Khartoum as the first British evacuation flight with 40 nationals landed in Cyprus earlier on April 25.&nbsp;

"Travel within Sudan is conducted at British nationals' own risk and plans may change depending on the security situation," Andrew Mitchell, the UK's minister for Africa said.&nbsp;

Britain, which has estimated that about 4,000 of its nationals are in Sudan, said military flights would depart from an airfield outside Khartoum, and would be open to those with British passports.

Cyprus's foreign ministry said the first British civilians evacuated from Sudan had arrived on the island on Tuesday, with about 40 civilians on board a plane belonging to Britain's Royal Air Force.

Sunak's spokesman earlier said flights would continue for as long as possible and British nationals would be taken to Cyprus, with the government facilitating their travel on to Britain.

Cyprus, a former colony and home to two sprawling British military bases, said it had activated a humanitarian rescue mechanism following a British request and would offer reception facilities for the evacuation of third-country civilians.

Sunak said that Britain was exploring other options for evacuations, including Port Sudan.

"We can't guarantee the long term sustainability of the airfield that we're currently using. So we're also exploring and standing up other alternative routes for safe exit from Sudan," Sunak said.

Sudanese and foreign nationals are streaming out of the capital of Khartoum and surrounding battle zones.

The impending ceasefire will be the&nbsp;third of its kind announced in recent days by Sudan's warring sides. The two previous ones either failed outright or led to a brief halt in fighting during which foreign missions managed to find a window to evacuate their citizens via air and sea routes.
