<p>The apex court ordered for the petitioners to be paid $459 each, the report added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Sri Lankan economy collapsed as it shrank 7.8% in 2022, pummelled by long power cuts, soaring inflation, a plunging rupee and record high interest rates caused by the worst financial crisis in more than 70 years.</p>

<p>Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), the custodian of the laws of cricket, has come up with a statement in the wake of the timed out dismissal against Angelo Mathews. MCC in its verdict sided with the umpires, saying the Sri Lankan batter was in violation of the playing conditions which stipulated that the batter be ready to "receive the ball" in the two-minute timeframe.&nbsp;</p>

<p>MCC highlighted the&nbsp;key part of Law 40.1.1&nbsp;which pertains to timed out, stating that being on the field or at the crease isn't enough for a batter to escape this form of dismissal.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The umpires determined that Mathews was not ready to face the ball within that two-minute allowance. He subsequently suffered an issue with his helmet, causing further delay," MCC said.</p>

<p>According to MCC, had Mathews informed of a "significant, justifiable, equipment-related delay within the two-minute allowance, they could have treated it as a new type of delay (as they would when, for example, a bat breaks), possibly even calling Time, allowing for a resolution of that delay without the batter being at risk of being Timed out".&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, since Mathews failed to do that, both umpires determined that the delay in play came after the two minutes had elapsed and that time had not been called.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"When the helmet broke, it appears that Mathews did not consult with the umpires, which a player would be expected to do when seeking new equipment. Rather, he just signalled to the dressing room for a replacement."</p>

<p>"I'd rather hope that the defeat in the Asia Cup would give more motivation to the boys to come out and obviously fight tomorrow, show plenty of spirit and get stuck in to the Indian side," Silverwood told reporters.</p>

<p>"They're a very good side, we know that, we've seen them play some superb cricket this tournament so far. But I think it's a good opportunity for our boys to show what they're made of as well."</p>

<p>Sri&nbsp;Lanka, who won the World Cup in 1996, return to the scene of the 2011 final when M.S. Dhoni's India beat them at the Wankhede Stadium to lift the trophy.</p>

<p>"The boys are very aware of the history, to be honest. Obviously, players do talk about past history of their team as well and the results that they've had," said Silverwood.</p>

<p>"But let's be honest, it's a great stadium. And when you are stood out in the middle, you get goose bumps. There's plenty of things out there to motivate them to go perform in front of what will be a packed house."</p>

<p>Sri&nbsp;Lanka&nbsp;showed glimpses of their brand of cricket in their eight-wicket win over defending champions England last week before they stumbled to defeat against Afghanistan.</p>

<p>The Afghans bowled out&nbsp;Sri&nbsp;Lanka&nbsp;for 241, a total they achieved with seven wickets and 28 balls to spare.</p>

<p>Sri&nbsp;Lanka's hopes of reaching the semi-finals are hanging by a thread and a victory on Thursday is crucial to their hopes.</p>

<p>"All of us were very disappointed the other night after that result. That's not to take anything away from Afghanistan," Silverwood said.</p>

<p>"We had a very good chat in the dressing room afterwards, addressed some of the issues that we felt we had and then we've come here and we're trying to put that right in practice now. So, we'll be ready for tomorrow."</p>

<p>Batsman Sadeera Samarawickrama has been the team's most consistent performer with 331 runs including a hundred and two half-centuries.</p>

<p>"He's learned about himself and what works for him, more importantly. And then now he's just trying to do that consistently time and time and time again," said Silverwood.</p>

<p>"And I think that's what all the greats do. If you look at Virat (Kohli) and people like that, they're just consistent with what they do all the time."</p>

<p>In terms of the economy, China holds the position of being Sri Lanka's largest lender. Just earlier this month, after more than a year since Sri Lanka found itself in an economic crisis, an agreement was reached with the Export-Import (EXIM) Bank of China to cover approximately $4.2 billion of Sri Lanka's outstanding debt, as confirmed by a statement from the country's finance ministry on October 11.</p>
