Amid the growing concerns in India about Beijing's increased activity in the Indian Ocean, another Chinese vessel has made its presence in the Sri Lankan port. Indian foreign minister S Jaishankar earlier expressed concerns over China's growing naval presence in the Indian Ocean.&nbsp;

In September, Jaishankar at an event said, "Last 20 -25 years, there has been a steady increase in the Chinese naval presence and activity in the Indian Ocean, but there has been a very sharp increase in the size of Chinese naval. When you have a very much bigger navy, that navy is going to be visible in terms of its deployment somewhere.”

Even US Under Secretary Victoria Nuland while meeting Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Ali Sabry in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session flagged concerns over Shi Yan 6.

China is already infamous for its alleged spying activities overseas. Shi Yan 6 was given permission to dock at Colombo port for replenishment purposes till October 28.&nbsp;

Former captain Angelo Mathews said Sri Lanka will "fight fire with fire" against&nbsp;England&nbsp;as the veteran all-rounder plots his second successive World Cup upset over the defending champions.

Veteran all-rounder Mathews initially missed out on selection for the tournament but was summoned to India to replace the injured Matheesha Pathirana.

On Thursday he is expected to go straight into the team to face&nbsp;England&nbsp;who have an identical record of one win and three defeats so far.

"We have to play our A game to win against a strong English team," said 36-year-old Mathews.

The move comes five days after a proposal was made in this regard during a Cabinet meeting last week to give free tourist visas to foreigners from five countries who intend to visit Sri Lanka as tourists.

Sri Lanka’s economy heavily relies on inbound tourism, with India accounting for the majority of tourist arrivals.

The move is expected to give a major boost for the crisis-hit island which has been battling persisting high inflation, unemployment and deteriorating economy post the Covid pandemic.

The move is aimed at attracting more tourists to the island nation. "We are expecting to increase tourist arrivals to five million over the coming years," the ministry was quoted as saying in Sri Lankan media outlets.

<h2>Country seeks a turnaround&nbsp;</h2>

In September, India led with more than 30,000 arrivals, comprising 26 per cent of the total, while Chinese tourists followed as the second-largest group with over 8,000 arrivals, reports PTI news agency citing official figures.

The proposed free visas and e-ticketing system will save money and time spent on obtaining visas, the statement read.

The development also comes a month after Ali Sabry in an exclusive interview with ANI news agency said that Sri Lanka is looking at forging a closer relationship with India while adding they are trying for electricity, renewable energy, tourism and port shipping connectivity.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Thursday (Oct 19) announced that it has finalised an agreement with Sri Lanka for the disbursal of the second tranche of a $3 billion loan to aid the recovery of the country from its worst-ever economic crisis. 
 
The recommendation to provide around $330 million to the South Asian country was made after an agreement was reached&nbsp;over the&nbsp;first review of the four-year Extended Fund Facility (EFF) agreement which was signed up in March, said the International Monetary Fund (IMF), in a statement. 
 
It added that the release of the funds depended on the approval of its executive board. Last year, the government of Sri Lanka defaulted on its $46 billion debt at a time when millions of people faced months of fuel and food shortages. 
 
"The authorities remain committed to the ambitious reform agenda under the EFF and their reform efforts have been commendable," said IMF Senior Mission Chief for Sri Lanka, Peter Breuer, and his deputy, Katsiaryna Svirydzenka, in a statement.

The IMF emphasised Sri Lanka's "rapid" disinflation from 70 per cent in September last year to only 1.3 per cent by September this year, along with a "significant fiscal adjustment expected by the end of this year." 
 
The IMF added that there was an increase of $1.5 billion in gross international reserves between March and June this year, as the shortage of essential items declined. 
 
However, "despite these early signs of stabilisation, full economic recovery is not yet assured," they stated.

"I am willing to work with (you) to consolidate political mutual trust between our two sides (and) jointly build a high-quality Belt and Road," he further stated. 
 
Xi said that Beijing was willing to "promote a China-Sri Lanka strategic cooperative partnership built on sincere mutual assistance and everlasting friendship, to continuously achieve new progress".

Sri Lanka has reached a preliminary agreement with China's EXIM bank on its (Sri Lanka's) debt treatment. In a statement on Wednesday (Oct 11), Sri Lanka's finance ministry said that the agreement covers approximately $4.2 billion of outstanding debt. "It constitutes a key step towards restoring Sri Lanka’s long-term debt sustainability and will pave the way to a prompt economic recovery," the statement said.

The indicative terms agreed would provide the necessary fiscal space for Sri Lanka to implement its ambitious reform agenda, the statement added. Colombo hoped that this achievement would anchor its ongoing engagement with the Official Creditor Committee and commercial creditors, including the bondholders.

"It should also facilitate approval by the IMF Executive Board of the first review of the IMF (International Monetary Fund)-supported programme in the coming weeks, allowing for the next tranche of IMF financing of about US$334 million to be disbursed," the statement further said.&nbsp;

The agreement on Sri Lanka's debt treatment came as President Ranil Wickremesinghe will visit China next week. President Wickremesinghe has been leading his country's push to manage its heavy debt and keep funds flowing from a $2.9 billion IMF programme.

"It constitutes a key step towards restoring Sri Lanka’s long-term debt sustainability and will pave the way to a prompt economic recovery," the statement said. The indicative terms agreed would provide the necessary fiscal space for Sri Lanka to implement its ambitious reform agenda, the statement added. Colombo hoped that this achievement would anchor its ongoing engagement with the Official Creditor Committee and commercial creditors, including the bondholders. "It should also facilitate approval by the IMF Executive Board of the first review of the IMF (International Monetary Fund)-supported programme in the coming weeks, allowing for the next tranche of IMF financing of about US$334 million to be disbursed," the statement further said. Former Australian cricketer Dav&nbsp;Whatmore is of the view that Pakistan bowlers have been let down by their fielders in the ongoing World Cup. Whatmore reflected on the dropped chance that allowed Sri Lankan no. 3 Kusal Mendis to hammer a stunning century that included 14 boundaries and six maximums.&nbsp;

"Kusal Mendis is batting beautifully, one of the best batters in this tournament so far. Perhaps, there are a few more such batters in other teams. But it would help if they [Pakistan] can hold those catches," said Whatmore.&nbsp;

"We saw another example of a good player being dropped and then goes on to make a big hundred. So I think they need to support their bowlers a bit more," he added.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Earlier in the tournament, during the Australia vs India match, Mitchell Marsh dropped Virat Kohli when the latter was on 12. With the game in favour of Australia, Kohli's wicket could have&nbsp;shut the doors for India. However, the dropped catch proved costly as Kohli went on to score a gutsy 85 which guided India to victory.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Whatmore also said that injuries to Dusmanta Chameera and Wanindu Hasaranga aren't helping the team either. Notably, Pakistan chased down the target in 48.2 overs to register the highest successful chase in the World Cup ever.

"And let's be very honest, if there weren't injuries, there would be certainly two bowlers in that group that would be their first choice, Dusmanta Chameera and Hasaranga. So, we have a bowling group that has to cover those two main bowlers and what is happening is they are not able to execute," added the former Aussie player.

"But, I think partially because of the pressure they have been put under by whom they are bowling to. The batsmen have been very good. The first game I think we can excuse them as it was an incredible one-off 400-run world record total on a good batting strip. The second one, 340 to protect, they&nbsp;couldn't do it."

The former coach also said that he 'fears where would Sri Lanka go from here (two defeats) in the tournament but they really need to execute their plans.'

ODI World Cup 2023: Former coach Dav Whatmore fears 'what next' for Sri Lanka after loss against Pakistan

Pakistan batter Mohammad Rizwan helped his team create history in the ODI World Cup 2023 after beating Sri Lanka by six wickets on October 10. The wicketkeeper braved some cramps during an unbeaten innings of 131 runs and said that 'it is speechless' to perform like this for the country.

“Whenever you perform for your country and the performance is like, it is speechless for you,” Rizwan said to Simon Doull for the ICC while speaking after his Player of the Match award.

“It was difficult because with a chase like that it’s always special. But the thing is for us, when we went into the dressing room after bowling, every player had belief that we were going to chase that. So that’s why the positive vibes were in the mind,” he further added.

Rizwan also said that there were two turning points in the game, one of which came after Pakistan got Kusal Mendis out after the batter scored 77-ball 122.&nbsp;

"At that point we decided that 340-350, if we restrict them to there we’re going to bowl very well. You saw in the middle of our overs, when Hasan Ali comes on, Shaheen Shah Afridi comes on and Haris Rauf, they bowled very well and restricted them then.

“We really must give credit to Kusal and Sadeera (Samarawickrama – Sri Lanka’s other century maker on the day). They played very well, but we knew that the pitch was very good and if the target was 350 we could chase that," he said.

The next point, Rizwan mentioned, was his skipper and arguably Pakistan's best batter Babar Azam getting out.

“Unluckily they got Babar Azam, but this is a team game and at that time we decided to go with a deep partnership.

“Basically, a chase of 300-plus is always… it’s a good track, a supportive wicket for us. If we go deep and just turn the innings into a T20 innings towards the end, that’s what we decided,” said Rizwan.

Pakistan completed the record chase of 344/4 in 48.2 overs and apart from Rizwan, Abdullah Shafique also scored 113 runs.
