Sri Lanka spinner Dunith Wellalage delivered one of the most memorable performances of the Asia Cup 2023 on September 12 &nbsp;against India. The left-arm bowler not only took a five-wicket haul but also scored 42 not out to give India a scare during the chase as well. The spinner also got the well-deserved Player of the Match award for his performance.

The nation’s debt negotiations with holders of its international debt, including creditors like China and India, are currently the centre of attention.

Bloomberg quoted the South Asian economist from Standard Chartered Plc., Saurav Anand as saying, “It’s an important milestone for sure, but to complete the IMF review, the government will also need to reach an agreement with the bilateral lenders.” He further said that next month’s IMF proceedings and the Sri Lankan president’s visit to China are important areas of focus at present.

Sri Lanka is making headway in resolving its financial issues, joining some of the most insolvent countries in the world, such as Ghana and Zambia. Zambia became the first country to receive significant debt relief through the Common Framework of the Group of 20 nations in June. Zambia’s president, Hakainde Hichilema, is currently on a state visit to China.

Dollar bonds issued by the island’s government have returned 54 per cent to investors this year as investment flowed back after it received a bailout following months of food and fuel shortages. While a Bloomberg indicator of emerging market national debt has increased 3 per cent this year, Zambian dollar bonds, which are also undergoing restructuring, have increased by 20 per cent this year.

The foreign currency bonds due in 2030 remained stable at 45.4 cents on the dollar on Tuesday, according to indicative pricing reported by Bloomberg, while the Sri Lankan rupee fell 0.2 per cent.

The struggle to comply with IMF demands to maintain funding is seen in Egypt's and Pakistan's attempts to sell state assets despite the political dangers involved. Investors feared that these troubled nations could be the next to default.

Last year, a new administration was formed as a result of the political upheaval brought on by Sri Lanka’s economic collapse. After his predecessor Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the country, President Ranil Wickremesinghe was chosen by parliament and is working to enact economic and constitutional reforms in an effort to reverse the trend.

The decision raises Sri Lanka’s prospects of passing the IMF’s first review of its $3 billion bailout, which will begin this week, opening the door to a payout of approximately $330 million by November. The nation’s debt negotiations with holders of its international debt, including creditors like China and India, are currently the centre of attention. Bloomberg quoted the South Asian economist from Standard Chartered Plc., Saurav Anand as saying, “It’s an important milestone for sure, but to complete the IMF review, the government will also need to reach an agreement with the bilateral lenders.” He further said that next month’s IMF proceedings and the Sri Lankan president’s visit to China are important areas of focus at present. Sri Lanka is making headway in resolving its financial issues, joining some of the most insolvent countries in the world, such as Ghana and Zambia. Zambia became the first country to receive significant debt relief through the Common Framework of the Group of 20 nations in June. Zambia’s president, Hakainde Hichilema, is currently on a state visit to China. Dollar bonds issued by the island’s government have returned 54 per cent to investors this year as investment flowed back after it received a bailout following months of food and fuel shortages. While a Bloomberg indicator of emerging market national debt has increased 3 per cent this year, Zambian dollar bonds, which are also undergoing restructuring, have increased by 20 per cent this year. The foreign currency bonds due in 2030 remained stable at 45.4 cents on the dollar on Tuesday, according to indicative pricing reported by Bloomberg, while the Sri Lankan rupee fell 0.2 per cent. The struggle to comply with IMF demands to maintain funding is seen in Egypt's and Pakistan's attempts to sell state assets despite the political dangers involved. Investors feared that these troubled nations could be the next to default. Last year, a new administration was formed as a result of the political upheaval brought on by Sri Lanka’s economic collapse. Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram backed Shastri's views and added, "I know it’s frustrating for the players and the fans back home in India, Pakistan and worldwide as well but this thing you cannot control. A lot of people are criticising a lot of people regarding the Asia Cup but this decision has been made. There is no point criticising now, nothing can happen. A lot of people say it should have been played in Pakistan. We can discuss this topic but it's not our job."

Four years later the Wickremasinghe-led government is getting up to probe whether the state intelligence service was complicit in one of the most devastating extremist attacks in Sri Lankan history.

Sri Lanka bowlers then took three wickets including Hridoy, who hit a brilliant 82 and reduced Bangladesh to eight down for 200. Needing 58 off last six overs, Bangladesh folded quickly and got all-out for 236. The last pair of Hasan Mahmud and Nasum Ahmed did give Sri Lanka a scare by adding 20 runs in 12&nbsp;balls but couldn't take their team home.

Earlier, Sri Lanka were asked to bat first after losing the toss and lost their first wicket quickly for a team score of 34 runs. Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis then added 74 runs for the second wicket before Bangladesh bowlers took four wickets in a short span to bring Lanka five down for 164. Shanaka (24) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (93) then added 60 runs for seventh wicket. After Shanka got out, Sadeera held one end and took Sri Lanka past 250.

For Bangladesh, Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud took three wickets each for 62 and 57 runs, respectively in their 10 overs. Apart from them, Shoriful Islam also chipped in with two wickets.

Azad Maulana, a former spokesman of the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pullikal (TMVP), who was interviewed in the Channel 4&nbsp;documentary, claimed that&nbsp;Sri Lankan military intelligence met the Easter Sunday bombers before the attacks in 2019.

Maulana said he arranged the meeting and the eventual&nbsp;bombings were hatched to create insecurity in the country and enable&nbsp;Gotabaya Rajapaksa to win the presidential election later that year.

Although Maulana himself did not participate in the meeting, the intelligence officer told him that creating insecurity was the only way the Rajapaksa family could return to power.&nbsp;

After the bombing took place and the security footage was released, Maulana said he recognised the faces of the attackers&nbsp;carrying bomb-laden backpacks as those whom he had arranged to meet with the intelligence officer.&nbsp;

The British channel said Maulana was interviewed by United Nations investigators and European intelligence services over his claims.

On April 21, 2019, a series of blasts tore through three churches and many luxury hotels in Sri Lanka. Nine suicide bombers of the local Islamist extremist group National Thawheed Jamaat (NTJ) linked to ISIS were behind the attacks which killed 270 people, including 11 Indians while leaving over 500 injured. Eight explosions rattled the Sri Lankan cities of Colombo, Negombo, Kochchikede and Batticaloa.

Earlier this year,&nbsp;Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, on the occasion of Easter, assured the victims that justice would be delivered.&nbsp;

"I wish to reassure you that the legal proceedings related to this tragic incident are being processed independently and impartially, without any influence," he said in the message.&nbsp;

Instead, he sat at a grand piano in the compound and played a song to the crowd streaming through its rooms.&nbsp;

"Dayaratne was on social media playing the piano while the building was being vandalised," a senior officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP.

Police authorities concluded that the constable had breached discipline after a lengthy investigation.&nbsp;

Before the compound was stormed in July 2022, protesters had been camped outside Rajapaksa's office for months demanding he step down over the island nation's unprecedented economic crisis.&nbsp;

Protesters seized the residence and were later seen frolicking in the presidential pool and jumping on Rajapaksa's four-poster bed.
