<p>According to a statement from the Census and Statistics Office, the Colombo Consumer Price Index, which the Sri Lankan government uses to monitor inflation, showed a year-over-year rate of 6.3 per cent in July 2023, down from 12 per cent in June this year.</p>

<p>“The overall rate of inflation as measured by the Colombo Consumer Price Index on a year-on-year basis is 6.3 per cent in July 2023. This was down from the 12 per cent recorded in June," the&nbsp;statement said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Sri Lanka last recorded single-digit inflation in September 2021, when it stood at 5.8 per cent. As the island nation entered its worst economic crisis, the inflation rate rose to a whopping 69.8 per cent in September 2022.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the PTI report, the government statement noted that lower inflation was a result of a decline in the cost of food commodities. Based on the index, food prices decreased 1.4 per cent in absolute terms during the previous 12 months.</p>

<p>Due to the currency crisis, Sri Lanka reduced imports, which resulted in shortages and high costs. However, after the $2.9 billion IMF bailout in March this year, the government tried to resolve the recurring power crisis and lifted import restrictions. These actions significantly improved the economy situation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>PTI quoted Nandalal Weerasinghe, the Governor of the Central Bank, as saying that the country will record&nbsp;inflation in single-digits in the third quarter of this financial year too.</p>

After Bazball, Shoaib Akhtar coins new term for Pakistan cricket team

<p>The Sri Lankan government tightened security on Sunday (July 23) as activists in the capital city of Colombo commemorated those killed during the 1983 anti-Tamil riots which fuelled a deadly civil war for six days (July 25-30). According to a report by the news agency AFP, authorities deployed armed troops that outnumbered the protesters.</p>

<p>Several activists lit oil lamps and candles outside Colombo's main cemetery, where inter-communal riots started 40 years ago.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Let's not forget the slaughter of Tamils," read a banner carried by members of North-South Solidarity, a rights group from the Sinhalese and minority Tamil communities. The AFP report said that during the commemoration, police were seen kicking and stomping on oil lamps placed along the pavement just outside the cemetery.</p>

<p>In 1983, the then-government attempted a mass burial at the cemetery for 13 Sinhalese soldiers killed in a Tamil rebel land mine attack on July 23. Relatives demanded individual funerals for the soldiers and clashed with police, before turning their attacks on Tamils and Tamil-owned shops in the area.</p>

The AFP report said that during the commemoration, police were seen kicking and stomping on oil lamps placed along the pavement just outside the cemetery. <p>Wickremesinghe, who is on a two-day visit to India, landed in New Delhi on Thursday (July 20). This is the first Indian trip of any senior Sri Lankan leader after the nation faced an unprecedented economic crisis last year.</p>

<h2><strong>Network-to-network agreements for UPI in Sri Lanka</strong></h2>

<p>India and Sri Lanka exchanged several agreements in the presence of Indian PM Modi and Sri Lankan President Wickremesinghe in New Delhi. One of the agreements finalised was for&nbsp;network-to-network agreements for the acceptance of UPI in Sri Lanka.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking at the joint conference after the talks, PM Modi said, "We agree on the enhancement of air connectivity between India and Sri Lanka. To increase trade and travel by people, we have taken the decision to start passenger ferry services between Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu and Kankesanturai in Sri Lanka."</p>

<p>"Sri Lanka also has an important place in both India's 'Neighbourhood First' policy and 'SAGAR' vision. Today we shared our views on bilateral, regional and international issues. We believe that the security interests and development of India and Sri Lanka are intertwined. In a few hours from now Sri Lankan President will meet the Indian Prime Minister.

<p>Sri Lanka has notified the Indian rupee as a designated currency, Indian External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said on Thursday (July 20).</p>

<p>"In terms of trading in our national currencies, Sri Lanka has already notified India Rupee as designated foreign currency in their system," Bachi said during a weekly media interaction in New Delhi.</p>

<p>Making Indian rupee (INR) a designated foreign currency enables not only trade settlement between the two countries in INR but also Indian tourists coming to Sri Lanka can use INR for transactions.</p>

<h2><strong>Deepening financial and economic connection</strong></h2>

<p>Bagchi said that the utilisation will depend on India's private sector and people who engage in the trade sector.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We would like to deepen this financial and economic connection. It will be premature to comment today on it, when the visit is tomorrow," he added.</p>

<p>The comments came hours before Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe&nbsp;landed in the capital New Delhi to kickstart his two-day visit to India.</p>

<h2><strong>Wickremesinghe in India&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Wickremesinghe was invited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and is the first Sri Lankan leader to visit since the island nation was hit by an unprecedented economic crisis last year.</p>

<p>Notably, this is also the first time that the 74-year-old Sri Lankan leader is vising India since he assumed office in July 2022 after his predecessor, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, fled Sri Lanka amid massive public protests.</p>

<p>President Wickremesinghe is expected to meet his Indian counterpart Droupadi Murmu and discuss various issues of mutual interest with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other Indian dignitaries, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a press release.</p>

<p>The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in a press release noted, "Sri Lanka is an important partner in India's Neighbourhood First Policy and Vision SAGAR. <p>Meanwhile, Bagchi earlier in the day said that Wickremesinghe's India visit is a major one as the country has important, multifaceted relations with the island nation.</p>

<p>"This is a very important visit, it is a neighbouring country with whom we have very important relationship, we have multifaceted relations," he said.</p>

<p>Ever since Sri Lanka plunged into economic chaos, India has been helping the island country by providing aid, medicines and other essential items.</p>
