England bowlers are set to report for training on Thursday, leading the way as cricket chiefs step up plans to start a season heavily delayed by the coronavirus pandemic.

The global health crisis has put matches on hold in England until July 1 at the earliest while in other countries the season is already over.

Despite the pandemic, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is still planning to stage a full home international programme, starting with a three-Test series against the West Indies, which was originally scheduled for June.

The ECB has announced that up to 18 bowlers will be involved from Thursday.

Edgbaston, Hove, Old Trafford, the Oval, the Riverside, Taunton and Trent Bridge will stage at least one session, before batsmen and wicketkeepers become involved from June 1.

The bowlers' identities have yet to be made public but the choice of venues indicates that James Anderson (Old Trafford) and Stuart Broad (Trent Bridge) will be among the leading England bowlers training at their home county grounds.

Bowlers will have to bring their own kit, including designated cricket balls, wash their hands regularly, and clean any equipment used with disinfectant wipes.

England managing director Ashley Giles said last week he wanted the training sessions to be safer than a trip to a supermarket.

As well as the West Indies Test series, England's cricket schedule includes three Tests against Pakistan and limited-overs matches against Australia and Ireland, with the fixtures set to be played behind closed doors at bio-secure venues.

ECB chief executive Tom Harrison has warned a season without any matches at all could cost the board £380 million ($465 million).

England bowlers lead the way as cricketers resume training

The head of global players' union FIFPro has given his backing to footballers who do no want to return to training because of coronavirus fears and cautioned that it would be "inhumane and unacceptable" if they were to be punished for taking such a stance.

Jonas Baer-Hoffmann's comments come after Troy Deeney of English Premier League side Watford refused to restart training ahead of a possible resumption of the season because he does not want to put his young child, who has breathing difficulties, at risk of catching the virus.

Deeney has also cited fears his family could be in danger because of figures that show black and ethnic minorities in the UK -- which has the highest recorded death toll in Europe -- are more likely to become seriously ill with COVID-19.

Deeney is "a player who has very legitimate concerns and wants to protect his family", Baer-Hoffmann said in a conference call with reporters on Wednesday.

"If these players are being pressured or potentially facing disciplinary actions, we feel that is very much unacceptable.

"The idea that somebody may be punished in a pandemic for trying to protect his family's health is inhumane and unacceptable."

However, there is no suggestion that Watford are planning to take disciplinary action against Deeney.

Several players in England have voiced concerns about returning to training, even in small groups.

Watford were among the Premier League clubs affected by six positive tests for the virus out of a total of 748 tests conducted on Sunday and Monday.

England defender Danny Rose, on loan at Newcastle United from Tottenham Hotspur, said players were being treated like "lab rats" as the league attempts to get going again.

"No system can actually exclude the risk of infection, so it is a question about the probability by which you minimise that risk and many of the systems that we are seeing and reading about -- not particularly England -- still leave many, many gaps and many risks," Baer-Hoffmann said.

"If the players in England -- of which Danny Rose is a part -- would like stricter rules then that needs to be discussed."

Baer-Hoffmann admitted that plenty of players around the world were keen to get back playing despite the potential risks involved, but said FIFPro recommended that players undertake three to four weeks of training before beginning matches again due to the risk of injuries.

In England the Premier League has been suspended since March 13.

The financial consequences of not restarting would be potentially very serious for clubs, although players at the top level in England are in a better position than some of their counterparts around the globe.

Baer-Hoffmann highlighted the case of players in several Latin American countries, including Colombia and Uruguay, as well as in Botswana and Egypt, who are now relying on food packages from their local players' union "because they cannot even provide for their own basic needs and are being stranded in terms of income".

'Inhumane' - FIFPro chief warns against punishing players who refuse to train over virus fears

Watford defender Adrian Mariappa said news that he had tested positive for coronavirus came as a "big surprise" as he has felt no ill effects.

The 33-year-old was one of three positive tests at Watford with the other two among staff members.

The Hornets accounted for half the six COVID-19 cases detected from 748 tests of Premier League players and staff ahead of a return to training in small groups this week.

"Ever since I got my positive result back on Tuesday, I’ve been scratching my head to try to work out how I might have got coronavirus," Mariappa told The Telegraph.

"It was a big surprise because I haven’t really left the house, apart from some exercise and the odd walk with the kids. I’ve mainly just been homeschooling and keeping fit."

Mariappa had been following a fitness programme prepared by the club without any trouble caused by the virus to his breathing.

"I’ve not had any symptoms and I’ve felt as fit as ever, probably fitter because I’ve been working really hard.

"I’ve been following my training programme and I’ve not felt out of breath or ill, or anything.

"We’ve been fully monitored the whole time and the club have been able to track our distances and things. I’ve been really excelling in all of that and feeling great."

Burnley confirmed their assistant manager Ian Woan is also asymptomatic having tested positive for the virus.

Watford captain Troy Deeney has said he will not return to training this week for fear that he could contract COVID-19 and pass it onto his five-month-old son.

Other Watford players are reportedly set to follow Deeney's example, but Mariappa did not rule out returning to training once he was gone through a period of seven days self-isolation.

"I will just follow the protocols and each of the steps, and decide what is right for me each time," he added.

"My focus now is just on isolating for seven days and hopefully testing negative next time."

Former WWE Superstar Shad Gaspard went missing on Monday at Venice Beach after going for a swim with his 10-year-old son. Gaspard and his son were caught in a strong current and that alerted the lifeguards. While the lifeguards managed to rescue his son, Gaspard was nowhere to be found.

On Wednesday, officials and investigators found a body in the area. Investigators say the body matches the description of the missing father. The complete identity of the body hasn’t been released yet. Apparently, Gaspard told the lifeguard to save his son first.

Cricket is gearing up to come back to life after a prolonged break due to COVID-19 pandemic. But this time, with new rules and regulations for the safety and well-being of the players, support staff and everyone involved in a series or tournament.

ICC’s Cricket Committee has recommended a ban on the usage of saliva for polishing or nurturing the cricket ball and the proposal will now be passed to the ICC Chief Executives' Committee in early June for approval and it is highly expected that the recommendation will get rubber-stamped for the resumption of cricket post-pandemic. The catch for bowlers? Only sweat can be used to polish the ball as the Cricket Committee thought that any further relaxation or variation of the rule might be problematic and didn’t discuss the usage of artificial wax on the ball.

But what does saliva ban means to bowlers?

The art and science behind swing bowling are not simple. Swing bowling is one of the most prized skills for a bowler. The game of cricket excels when a pacer troubles the batsmen with swing bowling with the new ball and it reaches a whole new level when a bowler comes back to reverse swing it with the old ball. But will the latest recommendation hamper the balance between the bat and ball? It is likely.

The science around outswing, inswing and reverse swing bowling are one of the most misunderstood parts of the game. Swing bowlers also live in a narrow path dividing legality and illegality.

Spit-polishing the cricket has been part of the legal method of shining one side of the ball in a bid to create aerodynamic asymmetry which assists in swinging the ball. But it is just one of the factors. The wrist, finger position, the direction and speed of release, the length, the point of release, everything matters and it is one of the toughest skills for a pace bowler to master. Even more so when it comes to moving the ball both ways.

Whenever a cricket fan thinks of a pacer, apart from the speed of the ball, one element which strikes the mind is the bowlers licking the finger and then applying the saliva to one side of the ball only to rub it on the trousers to improve the polish of the ball – but this could be wiped off completely from the cricket book until a vaccine for the dreaded virus is found.

Can sweat completely replace saliva? No.

Whether sweat can completely replace saliva is still unclear but one thing is evident that bowlers are going to face some major troubles when the ball gets old and need more liquid to polish the ball properly.

Swing bowling is a really crucial part of cricket and there have been instances when bowlers and fielders have been caught red-handed while tampering the ball with external and banned substances.

The most recent cases are of Aussie cricketers Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft. Former South African captain Faf du Plessis was twice sanctioned for ball-tampering. Former Pakistan players Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Akhtar were also found guilty of tampering with the ball. This indicates how important swing bowling is not only important for a pacer but for the entire team as well and a ban on saliva could further take the balance away from the bowlers.

A possible solution for bowlers?

As of now, the bowlers and cricketers need to find out a way to shine the ball by using sweat as the World Health Organization states there have been no reports of faecal−oral transmission of the COVID-19 virus to date. Hence, the deadly virus does not spread through perspiration (sweat).

But what can bowlers do here? Nothing. With immense health risk of COVID-19, players need to get rid of their habit of polishing the ball with saliva. And before the resumption of cricket, bowlers can hope that the ICC discusses the usage of artificial wax in their future meetings to balance the game between the bat and ball.

Saliva ban: A fresh headache for swing bowlers

BCCI apex council member Anushman Gaekwad on Wednesday said that the ICC T20 World Cup 2020, scheduled to be hosted by Australia, is unlikely to go ahead, opening a window for the much-awaited Indian Premier League (IPL) depending on the situation surrounding COVID-19 in India.

Gaekwad opined that the only window for IPL is October-November, which is booked for the T20 World Cup while adding the IPL can only happen if the marquee event in Australia gets cancelled or postponed.

"I have my doubts that T20 WC will be held this year. About IPL, we cannot think of just now. It will depend on Indian conditions and the window is only during this T20 WC which is October-November," Gaekwad told 'PTI-Bhasha'.

Twitterati went on a laughing riot after witnessing Kohli in a new, hilarious avatar and came up with some rib-tickling memes on the Indian skipper. While thousands of likes and retweets followed, fans made sure they immortalize the moments by taking Kohli for a ride to the world of memes.

“I spotted .... A Dinosaur on the loose,” Anushka captioned the video and the post was bombarded with reactions as fans were left laughing out on their floors.

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin says he is having sleepless nights due to the COVID-19 pandemic with European soccer’s governing body set to lose “millions and millions” of dollars after the season came to a halt.

European leagues and UEFA competitions have either been suspended since March or had their seasons cut short due to the novel coronavirus outbreak.

While the German Bundesliga resumed over the weekend, it is unclear when, or if, other major top flight leagues will restart, with the season set to spill over into August when the 2020-21 campaign is set to kick off.

"There is so much information (to take in) and so many calendar issues. So many millions and millions, dozens of millions of dollars, that we will lose," Ceferin told the Guardian here

“It’s then hard to fall asleep at night. You would be quite irresponsible if you could fall asleep immediately.

“The situation for UEFA is not that alarming, we’re not in a dangerous situation, but we still care about the clubs and the leagues and the stakeholders so it is a lot of work.”

Ceferin said he did not expect football to change once the situation returns to normal but added that Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations could be adapted to the “new times”.

“If they don’t follow the rules they will always be sanctioned, but of course we’re thinking about how we can improve our regulations,” he said.

“This will not happen very soon but we’re thinking of improving (FFP), modernising it and doing something more about the competitive balance. We’re also considering some sort of ‘luxury tax’, if it’s possible.”

UEFA's Ceferin losing sleep over COVID-19 cost

Cricket Australia is set to seek International Cricket Council’s (ICC) permission to use disinfectants of match balls in a bid to reduce the health risk to players as the gentlemen’s game prepares for life post-COVID-19 pandemic.

Cricket Australia’s Sports Science and Sports Medicine Manager Alex Koountouris has said that an overall set of guidelines have been prepared for players to return safely to training, however, competitive cricket is expected to be played only later in the year.

Disinfectants were used on match balls in German Bundesliga to limit the health risk of players during football matches in the country. However, football and cricket are complete opposite when it comes to usage of the ball.

With the ICC’s Cricket Committee recommending a ban on saliva for the players to shine the ball, Kountouris said that testing will soon start on whether disinfecting the ball could minimize health risk.

"Disinfecting the ball is a consideration," Koumtoris was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.

...we'd have to speak to the ICC and get permission, there's a lot of things (to consider). And whether it's effective or not. The ball being leather, it's harder to disinfect because it's got little nooks and crevasses.

"...we don't know how infected the ball is going to get and we don't know if it's going to be allowed. But it's absolutely a consideration. Everything is on the table at the moment, everything is being considered."

Cricket Australia’s Sports Science and Sports Medicine Manager further said that with England likely to play cricket before Australia, they can check the results there before implementing them in Australia.

"From an Australian cricket perspective, other countries are probably going to play before us," he said.

"We've got a chance to work with the ICC and other countries to see what they come up with and how it works for them. We'll obviously take whatever steps we need to do to make sure we lower the risk."

The New norm? Cricket Australia set to seek ICC's permission to use disinfectants on match balls

Dropped from the list of centrally contracted cricketers, Pakistan pacers Muhammad Amir and Hasan Ali have left a WhatsApp group formed by head coach-cum-chief selector Misbah-ul-Haq to advise players on fitness issues and training.

Though the Pakistan Cricket Board has played down the decision by Amir and Hasan to leave the group after they were not given central contracts, but it has become a talking point in the country.

"It is not unusual for players to not be in the group if they are not given central contracts," one source in the board said.
But at the same time critics pointed out that there are several other players in the group who don't have central contracts.

"One thing is clear that Aamir and Hasan are not happy at being snubbed for the central contracts," one former Test player said.
He said Hasan leaving the group was all the more strange since he is presently unfit and struggling with a back injury.

"Why would he want to leave the group at this time when he needs advice on his fitness from the PCB trainers all the time," he said.

Hasan is said to be facing at least six to eight months out of the game as he waits for an expected surgery for his back problem.

However, left-arm fast bowler Wahab Riaz, who was also not given a central contract, has not left the group.

Misbah, along with PCB trainers, formed the group to keep in touch with all the players and given them online instructions on how to keep fit during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Amir, in particular, is said to be very unhappy with the way the board has treated him after he decided to retire from Test cricket last year.

"Amir is upset because he kept the former head coach, Mickey Arthur informed about all his decisions even the one to leave Test cricket," a source close to the bowler said.

The PCB recently announced central contracts for only 18 players but said it is going to give out enhanced contracts to the best domestic cricket performers as well.

A top South Korean football club accused of using sex dolls to fill empty seats in its stands will face disciplinary proceedings this week, K-league officials said.

With fans banned from matches because of the coronavirus, FC Seoul came under fire for deploying dozens of silicone spectators wearing T-shirts or holding placards with the logo of a sex-toy seller.

The K-league said its disciplinary committee will review whether the use of the mannequins violated the league's rules on promoting obscene materials.

Officials will also discuss whether the incident damaged the league's image and integrity.

Violating those rules can result in five league points being deducted, or a fine of more than five million won (US$4,066).

FC Seoul -- who beat Gwangju FC 1-0 in the match -- apologised earlier this week for causing "deep concern" to fans, but has insisted the mannequins had no connection to sex toys.

Reports say the mannequin distributor approached the K-league offering to provide its products to fill empty stands for free, and was introduced to FC Seoul.

The club is considering legal action against the mannequin provider, according to Korean news reports, but regardless of the motive the stunt has made headlines around the world.

The K-league's new season kicked off behind closed doors on May 8 after being postponed for more than two months because of the coronavirus pandemic.

South Korean football league to investigate 'sex doll' row

La Liga's proposed restart next month has left fans juggling the excitement of football's return and the disappointment it will resume without them.

More than two months after the coronavirus pandemic halted the season in Spain, players have begun training in small groups as they aim to be as ready as possible for the planned reboot on June 12.

Yet goals, saves and tackles will all be greeted by silence or at best, artificial cheers approved by authorities to be pumped out of a sound system.

Even for Sevilla against Real Betis, the usually-heart thumping Andalusian derby that encapsulates the importance of supporters more than any other Spanish fixture, the atmosphere will be non-existent on the first weekend back.

But for clubs, there is a financial necessity given La Liga president Javier Tebas has estimated cancelling the season could cost them 1 billion euros ($1.08 billion).

"People need their dose of football," Adolfo Barbero, a commentator on Movistar, Spain's primary football broadcaster, told AFP.

"There is that want for fans to go to matches but for many now, the priority is to play. They want to see 22 guys, a ball and a green pitch, the rest will be for afterwards."

For fans, there is an acceptance that the sport returning in muted form is better than it not coming back at all.

"We understand that football without fans is not the football we want," says Jose Manuel Mateo, president of Aficiones Unidas, an association of fans from different clubs.

"But given the exceptional nature of the situation, we have no choice but to accept it."

"I don't think football can afford just to wait or stand still until there is a vaccine, which guarantees safety," Mateo added.

According to La Liga, playing without fans is not without cost too as clubs surrender considerable sums in matchday revenue.

But finishing the remaining 11 rounds of the season and completing European competitions would limit losses to around 303 million euros, a third of the figure contemplated for cancellation.

- 'Without fans it's not football' -

Resumption allows players to return to work and staff too, many of whom have had their wages cut in recent weeks.

"Many families also depend on football for income, it's not only the players," Mateo said.

Playing the last eleven days of the league "behind closed doors is a way to save the season," admits Gerardo Tocino, president of the Real Madrid fans' club, La Gran Familia.

"Those of us who really feel the colours of a club, what we seek is the best for the team, even if that means seeing your players through a screen."

But for others, sacrificing supporters was a solution found too easily and the worry is that over the coming weeks and months, the game will find ways to adapt.

Instead of being missed, fans could feel less needed than ever.

"Without fans in the stands it's not football, it's reality TV or televised training, but not football," says Emilio Abejon, secretary general of the Federation of Spanish Soccer Shareholders and Partners (FASFE).

"The country is allowing tourism to stop, which is the biggest business in Spain, but not football."

Abejon, a fan of Atletico Madrid, points out that a significant part of the 1.3 per cent contribution football makes to Spain's GDP is "the business around football like bars, restaurants, shops", all of which will remain closed.

"If football cannot return under reasonable conditions, which we believe to be with people in the stands, it should not return at all," said Abejon.

Joseba Combarro, president of the Eskozia La Brava, the most important supporters' club in Eibar, says the only option should have been cancellation.

"We understand we cannot go to the stadium due to the risk of infection," said Combarro. "But the players share the same risk as the fans, the risk is for everyone. The league should be suspended."

They want to see 22 guys, a ball and a green pitch, the rest will be for afterwards." For fans, there is an acceptance that the sport returning in muted form is better than it not coming back at all. "We understand that football without fans is not the football we want," says Jose Manuel Mateo, president of Aficiones Unidas, an association of fans from different clubs. "But given the exceptional nature of the situation, we have no choice but to accept it." "I don't think football can afford just to wait or stand still until there is a vaccine, which guarantees safety," Mateo added. According to La Liga, playing without fans is not without cost too as clubs surrender considerable sums in matchday revenue. But finishing the remaining 11 rounds of the season and completing European competitions would limit losses to around 303 million euros, a third of the figure contemplated for cancellation. - 'Without fans it's not football' - Resumption allows players to return to work and staff too, many of whom have had their wages cut in recent weeks. "Many families also depend on football for income, it's not only the players," Mateo said. Playing the last eleven days of the league "behind closed doors is a way to save the season," admits Gerardo Tocino, president of the Real Madrid fans' club, La Gran Familia. "Those of us who really feel the colours of a club, what we seek is the best for the team, even if that means seeing your players through a screen." But for others, sacrificing supporters was a solution found too easily and the worry is that over the coming weeks and months, the game will find ways to adapt. Instead of being missed, fans could feel less needed than ever. "Without fans in the stands it's not football, it's reality TV or televised training, but not football," says Emilio Abejon, secretary general of the Federation of Spanish Soccer Shareholders and Partners (FASFE). "The country is allowing tourism to stop, which is the biggest business in Spain, but not football." Abejon, a fan of Atletico Madrid, points out that a significant part of the 1.3 per cent contribution football makes to Spain's GDP is "the business around football like bars, restaurants, shops", all of which will remain closed.

World number one Rory McIlroy says there's little chance he'd tee it up again with US President Donald Trump, criticizing Trump's handling of the COVID-19 crisis on a golf podcast.

McIlroy told the McKellar Golf Podcast on Thursday that a more settled life away from the golf course has him feeling "more comfortable in my own skin" and more able to voice opinions.

The 31-year-old from Northern Ireland, who has a home in Florida, has not been impressed with Trump's response to the coronavirus pandemic.

"We're in the midst of something that's pretty serious right now and the fact that he's trying to politicize it and make it a campaign rally, saying that (the United States) administers the most tests in the world like it's a contest... It's just not the way a leader should act and there is a bit of diplomacy that you need to show and I just don't think he's shown that, especially in these times," McIlroy said.

Back in 2017, McIlroy was surprised at the "blow-back" he received after accepting an invitation to play a round with the then-recently inaugurated president.

"I'll sit here and say that the day that I did spend with him and others was very enjoyable," McIlroy recalled this week of that round with Trump.

"He's very charismatic. He was nice to everyone. It didn't matter whether you were me or the guys in the cart barn or the pro at the golf club.

"He has something. He obviously has something or he wouldn't be in the White House, right?

"So I will sit here and say that the day I had with him I enjoyed but that doesn't mean I agree with everything -- or, in fact, anything that he says."

And while he once defended that round with Trump as a show of respect to his office, McIlroy indicated he wouldn't accept another such invitation.

"I don't know if he'd want to play with me again after what I just said," McIlroy said. "I know it's very self-serving of me to say, 'No' and if I don't, then it means then I'm not putting myself in position to be put under scrutiny and that I'm avoiding that.

"But I probably wouldn't, no."

Kai Havertz scored twice as Bayer Leverkusen ended the first round of Bundesliga matches in over two months with a 4-1 win at Werder Bremen on Monday which moved them within a point of the top four.

The visitors went into the game only four points behind fourth-placed RB Leipzig after their fellow Champions League hopefuls' 1-1 draw with Freiburg on Saturday, when the Bundesliga became the first major league to resume during the coronavirus pandemic.

Attacking midfielder Havertz, reportedly a transfer target for some of Europe's biggest clubs including Liverpool and Barcelona, was the star of the show at an empty Weserstadion.

He has scored 12 goals in all competitions this season, having netted 20 times last term.

It was Leverkusen's 10th win in 11 games, but their first since winning 3-1 at Rangers in the Europa League last-16 first leg on March 12.

After a slow start to the game in an eery atmosphere similar to the weekend's matches, with all games being played behind closed doors, the encounter burst into life with three goals in five minutes.

The 20-year-old Havertz nodded Leverkusen into a 28th-minute lead, before Bremen right-back Theodor Gebre Selassie levelled on the half-hour mark.

But Havertz restored Leverkusen's advantage three minutes later with another header, from Kerem Demirbay's free-kick.

Peter Bosz's side wrapped up a comfortable victory with second-half goals from Mitchell Weiser and Demirbay.

The heavy defeat leaves Bremen stuck in the drop zone, five points adrift off the relegation play-off spot and nine from safety, albeit with a game in hand.

Bremen have spent only one season, the 1980-81 campaign, outside the top flight since the formation of the Bundesliga in 1963.

Germany's Bundesliga became the first top European league to restart at the weekend with leaders Bayern Munich staying four points clear following a 2-0 win at Union Berlin behind closed doors.

After a two-month hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic, draconian hygiene measures were enforced at all nine matches.

The players are being regularly tested for the virus and substitutes wore face masks while sitting spaced out on the benches.

The games took place without fans with the players' voices audible inside the empty grounds.

There were modified celebrations to avoid contact, with goals being marked by elbow bumps and solo dancing.

AFP Sport looks at what we learned from the restart:

Easier to referee

With fans absent, the lack of background noise in stadiums meant the referees found it easier to control matches.

"Players don't immediately rush towards the referee in the event of a controversial decision, they don't form into packs," said Guido Winkmann, who refereed Cologne's 2-2 draw with Mainz on Sunday.

"Probably because there are no fans, there are less emotions involved."

Lutz Froehlich, head of the Bundesliga's referees, said he felt there was "greater acceptance when the referees made their decisions".

The 62-year-old said players tended to focus more "on their tasks in the game" rather than remonstrating with match officials.

No home advantage

Without passionate supporters driving on the home team, only one of the weekend's nine matches was won by the hosts when Dortmund smashed Schalke 4-0 in the Ruhr derby.

"There is no longer any home advantage," said Julian Nagelsmann after his RB Leipzig team were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Freiburg on Saturday.

"Of course, as a host you are used to the stadium etc, but if the fans are not there, the home advantage is gone."

Ball in play more

Curiously, the ball was in play more -- an average of 59:00 minutes compared to the season figure of 57:05, according to sports data company Deltatre.

It was in play the most in the goalless basement battle when Fortuna Duesseldorf were held at home by bottom side Paderborn, with 62:28 minutes of action.

The lowest figure recorded was in Cologne's 2-2 draw at Mainz, with the ball in play for just 52:23 minutes.

Fewer goals, lots of running

Statistically, there were slightly fewer shots -- 24.3 compared to 26.8 -- and goals, with 27 in nine games for an average of exactly three, down from 3.25 before the pandemic.

However, the players worked just as hard as before the enforced break.

There were just as many sprints, 220.1 per club compared to 220.3, and teams covered slightly more ground at 116.4 kilometres (72.32 mi), compared to 116.2.

Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich ran the furthest, managing 12.93km in Berlin.

Keep your (social) distance

The successful return weekend did not pass completely without a hitch, however, as in the heat of the moment some players forgot to avoid contact, especially when goals were scored.

Dortmund striker Erling Braut Haaland scored the first Bundesliga goal for two months, before dancing awkwardly alone, clapped on by team-mates.

However, not everyone could resist keeping their hands off team-mates during games, in breach of league protocol.

Hertha Berlin defender Dedryck Boyata apologised for grabbing the face of team-mate Marko Grujic to whisper instructions during their 3-0 win at Hoffenheim.

"We must definitely be careful now that we play under this situation," said Boyata.

"We have to adapt our way to play or celebrate."

On Monday, Robert Klein, the CEO of the international arm of the Bundesliga, said the clubs must remind players of the "guideline to celebrate within the social distancing norms".

Five things we learned from the Bundesliga restart

Pakistan batsman Umar Akmal, who was handed a three-year ban by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for failing to report a corrupt approach, on Tuesday appealed against the suspension. For Umar’s appeal, PCB will appoint an independent panel.

As per reports, Umar has hired Adviser to the Prime Minister on Parliamentary Affairs, Babar Awan’s law first to help him in the case.
PCB had banned Umar from all forms of cricket in April after the board’s disciplinary panel found his guilty of not reporting corrupt approaches before the start of Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2020. The right-handed batsman was suspended hours before Quetta Gladiators locked horns with Islamabad United in the tournament opener in February.

The Pakistan board charged him for two separate breaches of Article 2.4.4. of Anti-Corruption Code in February. Umar is the younger brother of former Pakistan wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal and cousin of current limited-overs captain Babar Azam. Umar has represented Pakistan in 16 Tests, 121 ODIs and 84 T20Is, and was touted as a promising youngster before getting in constant troubles due to his off-field behaviour.

Interestingly, chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board’s disciplinary Justice (retired) Fazal-e-Miran Chauhan, in his detailed judgement earlier this month, observed that Umar didn’t show any remorse nor did he seek an apology after the verdict, submitted a detailed judgement to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), which was made public on Friday.

The International Olympic Committee has asked all international federations to finalise the dates of the Tokyo Games qualifiers and help draft contingency plans in advance for all eventualities, including potential cancellations, amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last month, the IOC set June 29, 2021 as the new deadline for the qualification period of the Tokyo Olympics, which has been rescheduled to next year in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

"As some event dates and locations remain to be determined due to uncertainty over IF (international federations) calendars, we thank you in advance to keep us informed once events, dates and locations start to be confirmed so that these can be included in the qualification systems as soon as possible," the IOC said in a communication dated May 15.

"With the revised qualification systems in place, the IOC Sport Operations Managers will continue to collaborate closely with you to work on potential contingency plans should the nominated Olympic qualification events not be able to take place."

The IOC is hoping that the plans would be drawn up by July.

"We would like to have these plans ready by July and then depending on the evolution of the global situation we can discuss with you if it is necessary to publish these contingency plans and officially include them in the individual qualification systems at an agreed point," the communication said.

The IOC Sports Department and the international federations have worked in tandem to finalise the necessary adaptations of the qualification systems, with the main objective to implement a qualification system structure as close as possible to the qualification systems that were approved by the IOC Executive Board in February 2018.

The IOC also said it is working to make the Tokyo Olympics a cost effective Games.

"The Sports Department is working closely with Tokyo 2020 to identify potential areas for optimisation without impacting the athlete experience or compromising the field of play and conduct of competition."

"The ASOIF Olympic and Multi-Sports Games Consultative Group (AOMSG) will also be engaged to aid the identification of suitable areas for optimisations and cost savings, which will then be addressed with each IF on a sportspecific basis."

Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan will stage a new competition called the 'European Solidarity Cup' in 2021 to raise money for medical facilities in Italy and Spain.

The three clubs will play each other in a round-robin group, with Inter against Bayern held in Milan, Real facing Inter in Madrid and Bayern hosting Real in Munich.

Proceeds from the fixtures will be donated to medical facilities in Italy and Spain, two of the world's worst-hit countries by the coronavirus pandemic.

The aim is "to send out a message of solidarity and fraternity to the people of Europe", said a statement from Real Madrid.

Dates for the tournament have not been decided. The timing will "depend on the match calendar and when football can be played in front of fans again", the clubs said.

Bayern will invite 5,000 nurses, carers and doctors to the Allianz Arena for their match against Real Madrid.

"Nurses, carers and doctors in particular are doing an outstanding job for society at the moment," said Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. "We, the three clubs, want to show these heroes our appreciation, respect and gratitude."

Former India cricketer Sachin Tendulkar’s smashing knock of 98 against Pakistan in the 2003 World Cup is regarded as one of the best innings of all-time. Pakistan bowlers were hammered all over the park by the Master Blaster before he ended up getting dismissed, falling two runs short of a memorable century. Former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akthar, who was part of the iconic pace attack, has revealed that he was “very sad” as Tendulkar got out at 98.

Tendulkar, who was battling cramps while batting with a runner, was sent packing by Akhtar after a sharp bouncer got the better of him. Akhtar has said that he would have loved to see Tendulkar hitting him for a six in that bouncer which got him out. The former Pakistan pacer further said that it is unfair to compare Tendulkar with Kohli.

“I was very sad because Sachin got out for 98. It was a special inning; he should have touched the century mark. I wanted him to slam the ton. For that bouncer, I may have loved to see him hit a six, as he did it before,” Akhtar said during a live chat.

“Tendulkar batted in the toughest era of cricket. If he had to get the chance now, he may hit more than 1.30 lakh runs. So it’s not good to make a comparison between Sachin and Kohli,” Akhtar, a veteran of 46 Tests and 163 ODIs, said.

Earlier, Akhtar had revealed how his knee problem and poor captaincy from Waqar Younis led to Pakistan’s crushing defeat in the match against India despite posting a total of 274 runs, a challenging total in that era.

“The most disappointing match for me in my entire career was the 2003 World Cup match against India at Centurion. We had failed to defend a target of 274 despite having a very good bowling line-up,” said Akhtar.

“After the end of our innings, I told my teammates that we have probably scored 30-40 runs less. However, all the players in the team shouted at me saying if ‘273 is not enough then what is’. They said we will be able to get India all out. However, I knew that the pitch was a good one for batting and it will remain so in the second innings as well.”

“It was a bitter experience for me because we could have defeated India, both in 1999 and 2003, but we couldn’t. Not to take the credit away from India who have played us exceeding well at the World Cups,” he further added.

Cristiano Ronaldo returned to training with Juventus in Turin on Tuesday after an absence of over two months because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The 35-year-old drove himself into the Juventus Training Centre in a Jeep with tinted windows.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner will undergo medical and physical tests before joining up with his teammates in training, according to media reports.

Juventus players returned to individual training on May 4, the day Ronaldo returned to Italy after spending lockdown in his native Portugal.

For the past two weeks, he has been in quarantine in his villa in Turin.

Ronaldo played in Juventus's last Serie A game before the season was suspended, a 2-0 win over Inter Milan behind closed doors at the Allianz Stadium on March 8.

Italy has been one of the countries hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic with more than 32,000 deaths.

Juventus are leading Lazio by one point as they target a ninth consecutive Scudetto.

Ronaldo is the first Juventus foreign player, among those who left Italy during the lockdown, to return to the team's Continassa training centre.

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) announced on Monday that all its competitions, including Serie A, will remain suspended until June 14.

Serie A had hoped to return on June 13 but the FIGC has pushed back the date in line with a government decree that all sports competitions be suspended until next month.

The FIGC said the choice was made "pending any further... decision by the authorities", suggesting the possibility of a restart on June 13 might still exist.

But Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said on Saturday he needed "more guarantees" before the green light could finally be given for football to resume.

A meeting is planned in the near future between Conte and Italian football bosses.

The government's technical and scientific committee will decide in the coming days if it accepts the new health protocols proposed for a return to group training and competition.

Cristiano Ronaldo back training at Juventus after two months

Watford captain Troy Deeney will not return to training this week over fears he could pass coronavirus on to his five-month-old son.

Deeney has consistently voiced his concerns over the speed with which the Premier League hopes to return to playing matches despite the United Kingdom having the second-highest death toll in the world.

England's top-flight clubs are due to return to training in small, socially distanced groups on Tuesday.

Training will then be stepped up to full contact with the aim of resuming the season by the middle of next month.

"We're due back in this week. I've said I'm not going in. It's nothing to do with financial gain," Deeney said on the Talk The Talk podcast.

"My son is five months and he's had breathing difficulties. I don't want to come home and put him in more danger."

All players and staff will be regularly tested, but Deeney highlighted the contradiction of contact sport returning at a time when the public are told to continue following social distancing guidelines.

The 31-year-old also added he is willing to take a financial hit if not playing results in a reduction in wages.

"While we are being tested and while we are going to be in a very safe environment, it only takes one person in the group. I don't want to be bringing that home," he added.

"I just said the simplest thing. I can't get a haircut until mid-July, but I can go and get in a box with 19 people and jump for a header.

"I don't know how that works. No one could answer the questions, not because they didn't want to, but because they don't know the information.

"I've lost my dad, my gran, my grandad.  I've lost more or less everyone that I care about. So that, to me, is more important than a few quid in my back pocket."

Deeney also raised the concerns of black, Asian and ethnic minority players over studies that they are more at risk from the virus.

Black men and women are nearly twice as likely to die from COVID-19 as white people in England and Wales, according to the Office for National Statistics.

"Within the meeting I asked very simple questions. For black, Asian and mixed ethnicities they are four times more likely to get the illness and we're twice as likely to have long-lasting illnesses," Deeney said.

"Is there any additional screening? Heart stuff to see if people have got problems? No. Okay, well I feel like that should be addressed."

However, Newcastle manager Steve Bruce praised the attention to detail in the Premier League's protocols and said the vast majority of his players are in favour of a return to training.

"They have done everything they possibly can to make sure everyone is safe," Bruce told the BBC. "The attention to detail is fantastic. I think everything has been put in place.

"They have been meticulous in their planning. The vast majority of our squad are satisfied.

"Let's get up and going and see where it takes us. I think all of us want to get it started and finished."

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) are planning to host the West Indies for a three-match Test series in July as cricket gears up for live action following a prolonged break due to COVID-19. While the details aren’t finalised yet, it is likely that the three-match rubber would go ahead. West Indies captain, Jason Holder has said that he won’t be forcing anyone to be a part of the England tour while adding they would only go for the series if Cricket West Indies deem it safe.

“Each player has to be comfortable in making the step,” Holder said while adding, “It’s been made clear if we are to hop on a plane and go over to England to play, it must be safe.”

“Certainly from my perspective, I won’t be forcing anyone to go anywhere,” he added.

The West Indies tour of England was originally scheduled to start on June 4 but stands postponed until at least July due to the coronavirus pandemic. And the new schedule could be announced by the end of May.

“We’ve been given assurances from Cricket West Indies that we’d only go over to England if they deem it safe for us to play,” said Holder.

“It’s no different from a frontline worker going into a hospital every day - they’re putting their lives at risk, and still going to make money. The longer we stay off the field, the longer it’ll take for us to make money,” he added.

Earlier, Cricket West Indies CEO Johnny Grave asserted that some of the players will be nervous about touring to the UK amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

“There will be no coercing players into this tour,” Grave had said. “If you grow up in a country where the population might only be 60,000 or 70,000 people, to be thinking the UK has had over 30,000 deaths is a massive figure.

“We have to be absolutely clear that it’s safe first and foremost,” he added.

Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James said Monday he's eager for the NBA season to resume, as long as the health of players and their families won't be endangered amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

James, speaking on the "WRTS: After Party" programme on the Uninterrupted multi-media platform, said he hoped the NBA season resumes sooner rather than later.

"Definitely not giving up on the season," said James, whose Lakers led the Western Conference when the NBA suspended play on March 11 after Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for the coronavirus.

The virus brought global sport to a virtual standstill, but as lockdowns aimed at preventing its spread have begun to ease, sport has begun to re-emerge.

Germany's Bundesliga became the first top European football league to resume after a two-month hiatus at the weekend.

In North America the popular NASCAR stock car series resumed without spectators on Sunday and golf stuck a toe in the water with a made-for-TV charity event featuring Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson.

The NBA, along with Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League and Major League Soccer are still formulating plans to return, while the NFL tries to stay on course for an on-schedule season opening in September.

"Not only myself and my teammates, the Lakers organization, we want to play," James said. "There's a lot of players that I know personally that want to play. And obviously, we don't ever want to jeopardize the health of any of our players or any of the players' families and so on and so on.

"This is a pandemic that we have no idea -- we can't control it," James said. "We're going to listen to the people that's been following this pandemic, following the numbers, following the data."

The Lakers own the second-best record in the league behind Eastern Conference leaders the Milwaukee Bucks and were already assured of a spot in the playoffs -- which were due to start in April.

Among the uncertainties surrounding an NBA return is whether all of the remaining games of the regular season will be played and whether teams will play in their home arenas or at sites that will better allow the league to limit access for safety reasons.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver told players last week that he expected the league to study outbreak and testing developments for another two to four weeks before making a decision about resuming competition.

James has said he doesn't relish the idea of playing without fans in attendance, but he said Monday he just wants to be back on court.

"You know, I want to get back to playing," James said. "I love to play the game of basketball. I know how inspiring the game of basketball is. I know how inspiring sport is, itself.

"As soon as possible, when we can get back out there, we'd love to bring the game of basketball back to our fans."

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Lancashire were dealt a personal blow when they lost their chairman David Hodgkiss late in March after the 71-year-old contracted the dreaded virus. But weeks later Lancashire have returned with record financial earnings while putting themselves in contention to host Test matches during English summer as England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) plans to resume cricket in the country.

Lancashire have announced their highest-ever annual turnover of £34 million ($41 million). And EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization) for the Lancashire county in 2019 were £7.6 million.

"Excluding minority interests and one-off legacies it is absolutely a record," CEO Daniel Gidney told AFP. "It's a very proud day for the club.

"A hundred per cent it is David's legacy. He was a mentor, a friend as well as a boss. With his construction background, without him the £60 million redevelopment (of the ground) would not have happened. The board was the driving force but he was the centre of that.

Kohli agreed that whenever an opposition player instigates him to play an aggressive shot or sledges him, he gets motivated even more. Kohli added that during his childhood, he used to think that he could have won the match for India whenever the Men in Blue used to suffer defeat.

The Indian skipper emphasized that no target is impossible to chase and all depends on how a player builds his innings and partnership.

"When it comes to chasing targets, my mental state is simple -- if someone says something to me from the opposition side, then I get more motivated. When I was younger, I used to watch matches on television. If India did not end up winning the match while chasing targets, I used to think if I was there, I would have won the match," Kohli said in a Facebook Live session with Tamim.

"Chasing is a situation where you know how many runs you have to score. For me winning is important. While chasing I think I can walk out not out. At that time I think I can make the team win. If the target is 370/380, I never feel like that it cannot be done," he added.

The 31-year-old further gave an insight to how he along with Suresh Raina chased down 330 odd runs in 40 overs against Sri Lanka as he said that they divided 40 overs into two T20 matches and got going.

"There was a game in Hobart against Sri Lanka, where we had to chase 330 odd in 40 overs to qualify for the finals. I discussed with Raina that we will set up the chase as if we are playing two T20 matches," Kohli said.

Australia's two-time World Cup winning captain Ricky Ponting says senior batsman Usman Khawaja was axed from the national team due to his inconsistency but he is not willing to write him off yet.

The 33-year-old Khawaja was recently left out of the Australia's annual list of contracted players after he was dropped midway through last year's Ashes.

"I honestly think now he's going to find it difficult (to get back into the Australian team) and I feel for him," Ponting, who was recently involved with the Australian team as a batting consultant, told ABC Grandstand.

"I've always felt he's a very good player and we probably never saw the absolute best of him at international cricket. We saw glimpses of it, and dribs and drabs, but not the consistently good player I thought he could have been for Australia."
Ponting, however, hoped that Khawaja can score loads of runs in the domestic cirucit and make an international comeback.

"One thing I know, you never write great players off. He's got every opportunity once domestic cricket does start this summer, and all he can do is represent Queensland, get a truck load of runs under his belt and wait for another opportunity to come along.

"If it does I'm sure he wouldn't let anyone down if he gets a chance to play again."

Khawaja has played 44 Tests and 40 ODIs, scoring 2,887 and 1,554 runs respectively. He has eight hundreds and 14 half-centuries in Tests and two hundreds in ODIs.

Thomas Mueller joked that the Bundesliga without fans feels like "old man's football, 7pm, under floodlights" after Bayern Munich brushed aside Union Berlin 2-0 behind closed doors on Sunday.

A first-half Robert Lewandowski penalty and a late Benjamin Pavard header sealed Bayern's win in front of empty terraces in Berlin.

The result leaves defending champions Bayern four points clear as the German league restarted this weekend after a two-month hiatus due to the COVID-19 virus.

However, Mueller admitted it was strange to play Union behind closed doors at their compact Alten Foersterei stadium, which is usually packed with 22,000 passionate home fans.

"It felt a bit like the atmosphere you get for old man's football, 7pm, under floodlights, but as soon as the ball started to roll, the game took our focus," said Mueller.

The Bundesliga became the first top European league to resume this weekend, using draconian hygiene guidelines, regular testing of players and insisting on games in near-empty stadiums.

Hugging, embracing and handshakes were also banned.

"There were a few butterflies before the restart, wondering how it would go, like before the first game of the season in August," said Mueller.

"I wasn't worried about anything going wrong, everything was explained clearly to us.

"Union Berlin, just like us, were well prepared, no handshakes before kick-off etc."

Mueller said the defending champions were just happy to win their first game after the restart to keep them on course for an eighth consecutive league title.

"We came here with the goal of getting the three points," added Mueller.

"We had a bit more security after the second goal."

Werder Bremen are set to host Bayer Leverkusen at the Weserstadion on Sunday as live football action in Bundesliga continues. The German top-flight league resumed, behind the closed doors, on Saturday and both Werder Bremen and Bayer Leverkusen would be looking to kick-start their season again with a win.

While Bayer Leverkusen have been impressive in Bundesliga 2019-20 season by picking up 47 points off 25 matches and sit fifth in the standings, Werder Bremen have had a terrible season so far and are lying in the relegation zone (17) with just 18 points in 24 matches.

Bayer Leverkusen head into the match as heavy favourites and are expected to wrap up a comfortable victory given they hit a smooth transition post the resumption.

For Dream11 and fantasy players, the match brings good headache as both the sides boast quality players.

Premier League clubs will return to training in small groups from Tuesday after the latest stage of "Project Restart" was approved on Monday.

Clubs unanimously voted to allow players to start socially distanced training in a bid to meet the Premier League's mid-June date to resume the season.

Contact training is not permitted at this stage and corner flags, balls, cones, goalposts, playing surfaces and other equipment will be disinfected after each session.

Testing for the coronavirus has taken place at Premier League clubs over the last few days and will continue throughout the training period.

"Strict medical protocols of the highest standard will ensure everyone returns to training in the safest environment possible," a Premier League statement said.

"The health and well-being of all participants is the Premier League's priority, and the safe return to training is a step-by-step process.

"Full consultation will now continue with players, managers, clubs, the PFA and LMA as protocols for full-contact training are developed." The training protocols were presented to players and managers last week before being rubber-stamped during Monday's video conference call.

Other rules in phase one include players not travelling with anyone to or from training, while the use of public transport and team vehicles is banned.

Newcastle were one of the first top-flight teams to issue confirmation that players had been tested at their training ground.

The club said players would return on Tuesday, by which time all test results would be known.

Players will be asked to use an app on a daily basis to record any symptoms.

"It's been a really difficult time, but I hope with the news that phase one is about to start," Newcastle manager Steve Bruce said.

"I must stress that phase one looks as if it's as safe as it can be. I'm sure everyone will be delighted that we're trying to make that effort.

"In phase one we're allowed to train four to five people on one pitch, so basically a player has a quarter of a pitch to work within, so social distancing is not a problem. We'll train with eight to 10 at a time on two separate pitches.

"Everything is in place in the safety aspect. I've got no issues and I can tell the supporters the players and the staff are as safe as we possibly can be."

The resumption of Germany's Bundesliga over the weekend has raised expectations that the Premier League can follow suit.

But some Premier League players remain concerned over returning to work while the virus is still uncontained, with Britain one of the countries worst hit by the crisis.

Speaking to Good Morning Britain on Monday, Watford captain Troy Deeney said: "Phase one is social distancing individual training with a coach. That's no problem, that's like going to the park.

"Phase two will be next week six days of training, three to six people training together with contact and then six days after that you're going into 11 versus 11 and you can't social distance with 11 verus 11.

"I would say 98 per cent (of players) are very much aware that phase one is very good, I would say 65-70 per cent of people are concerned with phase two. I'd say even higher after that."

With the Premier League suspended since March 13 because of the pandemic, the green light for training came just hours after Britain's Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said he was hopeful the top-flight could resume in June.

"I had some very constructive discussions on Thursday with the FA, the EFL (English Football League) and the Premier League," Dowden told Sky News.

"We are working hard with them to try and get it back, aiming for mid-June, but the number one test is public safety.

"If we can sort that out then we will look to resume by mid-June. We're making good progress."
