England pace bowler Liam Plunkett has revealed he would consider playing for the United States in the future.

Plunkett has been absent from the England team since helping them win the 50-over World Cup for the first time last year.

The 35-year-old was also left out of the 55-man England squad recently asked to return to training following the coronavirus lockdown.

Plunkett's wife is American and they are likely to settle in the United States, prompting him to consider changing his international allegiance if his England prospects do not improve.

"It would be nice be involved in some sort of cricket over there," Plunkett told the BBC.

"My kids might be American, so it would be quite cool to say to them that I played for England and the US."

The United States were given one-day international status in 2019, but Surrey star Plunkett would have to serve a three-year residency period in order to be eligible to play for the country.

"I'm English and I'll always be an Englishman, but if I'm still fit and there's an opportunity to play at the highest level, why would I not take it?" he said.

"If I go over there and end up being a US citizen, or have a green card, I can help the development, especially being someone who has just finished with England. It would be nice to get involved in that."

Golf legend Tiger Woods on Tuesday called George Floyd’s death a “shocking tragedy” but said violent protests and burning the neighbourhood is not the right way to protest. Not only Woods, but athletes across sports have raised their voice against Floyd’s death and racism with #BlackLivesMatter trending all over social media.

Woods, in his statement, said he had the “utmost respect” for police and recalled the 1992 Los Angeles riots where four policemen were acquitted over the beating of Rodney King.&nbsp;

"My heart goes out to George Floyd, his loved ones and all of us who are hurting right now," Woods said in a statement on Twitter.

"I have always had the utmost respect for our law enforcement. They train so diligently to understand how, when and where to use force.

"This shocking tragedy clearly crossed that line."

#BlackLivesMatter: Tiger Woods, Darren Sammy join growing list sportspersons to raise voice against George Floyd's death

India's fielding coach R Sridhar says a four-phased training module is being prepared for the country's elite cricketers, who can attain peak match fitness with four to six weeks of training once the camp gets the go-ahead to start.

Sridhar, who has been an integral part of the Indian cricket set-up since 2014, spoke to PTI on how the Virat Kohlis, Rohit Sharmas and Jasprit Bumrahs will be training to get ready for the rigours of international cricket when the ball starts rolling again amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I think if you have a camp for 4-6 weeks, we can bring them to peak match readiness...Fast bowler needs around 6 weeks, batsmen might take a bit less time," Sridhar said.

"Once we get a date (on start of national camp) from the BCCI and approved by the government of India, we can start working backwards (starting from scratch). The challenge is to proceed in right phases as players can get excited when they play after 14 or 15 weeks.

"It's pertinent that we move in right manner forward. Don't want to look too much ahead," he explained.

Sridhar stressed on workload management and warned that pushing too hard would only cause injuries.

"Initially, we have to give them progressive workload. You can't have a sudden spike in workload which could lead to injuries," said the former Hyderabad left-arm spinner.

The coach then explained how they can go about it.

"First phase, it will be 'low volume-low intensity', followed by 'moderate volume-low intensity', 'high volume-moderate intensity' and then starts 'high volume-high intensity' training. This is how we will go," he said.

And what will constitute low-volume-low intensity training? Sridhar said it would vary.

"May be the fast bowlers will bowl two overs from half or quarter run-up. The deliveries will be bowled at 20 or 30 percent intensity. For a fielder, it will be at the maximum, six throws over 10 metres or 6 throws over 20 metres at 40 to 50 per cent intensity.

"For a batsman, it will start with five to six minutes of batting against moderate pace bowling," he explained.

"For catchers, it will start with semi-soft balls, intensity will be slow and volumes will be less. Then we can slowly pick it up as we cross one phase after another," he said.

It will be around the fourth week that match-intensity training will start and then slowly, the players will enter the zone where they get match ready.

"We can't do same training every day as we start with low volume-low intensity training. Once we get to the fourth week when high volume-high intensity training starts, the hands will get used to hard balls coming at 140km an hour, 130km an hour, that's when match-training will start.

"The sharpest minds will take six weeks to get into Test match mode," the 49-year-old opined.

He agreed that duration of getting into peak match readiness physically and mentally will vary from player to player but the aim for the coaches will be to have everyone on the same page when the camp ends.

"Definitely, there would be different intensity level, (it will vary) from player to player. That's what the sport is all about. Each player has to be different. We understand that. Each one will take slightly different time to get into the peak readiness.

"Someone will do it 4 weeks and some one will take 3 to 4 days more or there may be someone who may take 3-4 sessions more. We respect that. As coaches, our job is to get everybody on the same page at the end of the camp."

As of now, each of the centrally contracted players are following a fitness programme given to them by senior team's Strength and Conditioning coach Nick Webb.

"Each player is being taken care of in terms of where they are, what equipment they have. Fitness programmes are being monitored every week by head Strength and Conditioning coach Nick Webb, and team at NCA as well. They are being monitored on given programmes."

Sridhar has been instrumental in bringing innovation in the Indian team's fielding practice and he does have a "few things on his mind".

"I am still working on it. There are few things on my mind and when we go back and start the camp, basically my mind is working on how to plan the sessions once we get back.

"In a phased manner, we will incorporate a lot of drills, external props would be used to increase their reflexes, reaction drills, deviation methods, all those things, I have a few things and once the camp starts, it will be there for everyone to see," he said.

However, the innovations will be specific to the needs of the elite group.

"We will be more realistic as to what elite level cricketers need, we will make innovations that are pertinent to our plans," he concluded.

FIFA has urged football competition organisers to use “common sense” when considering whether to punish players for protesting against the death of George Floyd during matches. Some players in Jadon Sancho, Achraf Hakimi, Marcus Thuram and Weston McKennie stood for #JusticeForGeorgeFloyd while celebrating a goal as a strong message against racism.

The German FA (DFB) said that it was considering sanctions against players for their demonstration this weekend. Floyd, an African-America, died in Minneapolis after a white police officer knelt on his neck, despite calls from Floyd that he could not breathe. Since Floyd’s death, Chauvin has been arrested and charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. But protest all over the US and parts of the world have grown over the matter.&nbsp;

The curtailed Formula One season will start with two races behind closed doors in Austria on July 5 and July 12 followed by six other grand prix in Europe, the organisers said on Tuesday.

Formula One said it hoped to have between 15 and 18 races in total, with the season being completed in December.

"While we currently expect the season to commence without fans at our races we hope that over the coming months the situation will allow us to welcome them back once it is safe to do," said F1 chief executive Chase Carey.

Earlier, Yuvraj along with veteran Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh was targeted on social media for their support to former Pakistan cricketer Shahid Afridi’s foundation to battle the dreaded COVID-19. However, both the Indian icons cut their ties with Afridi after a video of the former Pakistan captain went viral where he was seen making controversial remarks on Kashmir and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Meanwhile, Yuvraj has been pretty active on social media during the lockdown and has, on a regular basis, posted videos while spreading awareness surrounding COVID-19. He has also helped thousands with his foundation YuWeCan during the crisis. Recently, he has been seen engaging in challenge trends with fellow former and active cricketers. &nbsp;

Former India cricketer Yuvraj Singh once again finds himself in a controversy as a video clip of his Instagram live conversation with Rohit Sharma went viral on social media. Both Rohit and Yuvraj were, in friendly humour, discussing Yuzvendra Chahal’s social media videos and during the conversation, the former India all-rounder allegedly made a casteist remark on Chahal which has irked the Twitterati with hashtag #YuvrajSinghMaafiMango (Apologize Yuvraj Singh in Hindi) heavily trending on the micro-blogging platform. While talking about Chahal’s obsession with online videos and social media, Yuvraj casually made a casteist slur and the clip has gone viral with the netizens getting offended by the remark and his choice of words. With the world of sports kicking back to life, cricket is also gearing up for resumption following a prolonged break due to COVID-19 pandemic. While a major tournament in Indian Premier League (IPL) standing indefinitely suspended, fans are eagerly waiting for an official confirmation surrounding the fate of the cash-rich tournament.&nbsp;

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president and former India captain, Sourav Ganguly has said with the future still being uncertain, the stakeholders are looking at all options while adding they are still unsure when cricket could resume.&nbsp;

“We can’t say what will happen in the days to come. It is tough to predict. We are looking at all options. We are still not sure when cricket could resume,” Ganguly told Sportskeeda.

The BCCI has received offers from countries like the UAE and Sri Lanka to host the money-spinning tournament there but Ganguly insisted that the Indian board is keen on staging the tournament in India given the situation is under control. The former India captain further said that they are yet to officially discuss the IPL schedule while repeating everything depends on the safety of the environment as saving human lives is more important.

“If at all, IPL does happen, we don’t know where it could happen. India would certainly like to host the event, provided the environment is safe. Right now, we are not in a position to say anything. It is too early. We are yet to officially discuss the IPL schedule. But it depends on the safety of the environment. Saving human life and breaking the coronavirus chain are more important for all of us,” Ganguly said.

While a major tournament in Indian Premier League (IPL) standing indefinitely suspended, fans are eagerly waiting for an official confirmation surrounding the fate of the cash-rich tournament. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president and former India captain, Sourav Ganguly has said with the future still being uncertain, the stakeholders are looking at all options while adding they are still unsure when cricket could resume. “We can’t say what will happen in the days to come. It is tough to predict. We are looking at all options. We are still not sure when cricket could resume,” Ganguly told Sportskeeda. Bayern Munich opened a 10-point lead at the top of the Bundesliga on Saturday with a 5-0 drubbing of relegation-threatened Fortuna Dusseldorf behind closed doors with the league's top-scorer Robert Lewandowski scoring twice.

Duesseldorf defender Mathias Joergensen scored an early own goal before Benjamin Pavard, Lewandowski (2) and Alphonso Davies hit the target.

With five games left, Bayern, who have won their last eight league games, are comfortably on course for an eighth straight league title.

However, second-placed Borussia Dortmund could trim their lead on Sunday at bottom side Paderborn.

Lewandowski, who had never previously scored in six games against Duesseldorf, made amends with goals either side of half-time.

Fortuna, who were unbeaten in their three games since the league resumed after a two-month coronavirus-enforced hiatus, were humbled at the Allianz Arena where they last poached a 3-3 draw in November 2018.

They fell behind on 15 minutes when Joergensen turned the ball into his own net after Pavard mishit his shot.

Right-back Pavard then grabbed the second with a powerful header on 29 minutes before Lewandowski made it 3-0 just before the break after being presented with a tap-in by Thomas Mueller.

Duesseldorf were floored with two goals in as many minutes as Lewandowski profited again with another poacher's goal after Serge Gnabry's good work.

Davies then scored the game's best goal.

After some high pressing, the Canadian teen won the ball in the Duesseldorf area, barged past a succession of defenders and fired home to make it 5-0 on 52 minutes.

<h2>- US death protest -</h2>

Werder Bremen boosted their survival hopes with a 1-0 win at Schalke, who are winless in 11 games and continue to plummet.

Midfielder Leonardo Bittencourt scored a first-half winner.

"This is a very, very important away win," said Bremen coach Florian Kohfeldt.

"We have taken seven points from the last three games, but if you look at the table, we are still behind."

Bremen have spent more seasons in the Bundesliga than any other club, but currently sit second from bottom.

However, Saturday's victory leaves them just three points from guaranteed safety with six games left.

They are two points behind Duesseldorf in 16th, which carries a relegation play-off at the end of the season.

Werder could climb out of the relegation places for the first time since December on Wednesday if they beat Eintracht Frankfurt at home.

Bittencourt hit a stunning strike from just outside the box which beat Schalke's Bayern-bound goalkeeper Alexander Nuebel on 32 minutes.

Schalke succumbed to their fourth straight defeat, piling pressure on head coach David Wagner.&nbsp;

In the same game, Schalke's American midfielder Weston McKennie wore a 'Justice for George' armband as part of the growing protests over the death of an unarmed black man during a police arrest in the United States.

"To be able to use my platform to bring attention to a problem that has been going on too long feels good!!!," tweeted 21-year-old McKennie.

"We have to stand up for what we believe in and I believe that it is time that we are heard."

George Floyd died in Minneapolis in an arrest by a police officer who pinned him to the ground for several minutes by kneeling on his neck.&nbsp;

<h2>- Hertha on the rise -</h2>

Hertha remain unbeaten with three wins and a draw since Bruno Labbadia took charge during the lockdown after their 2-0 win at home to Augsburg thanks for goals by Javairo Dilrosun and Krzysztof Piatek.

Having routed Leverkusen 4-1 away on Tuesday, Wolfsburg&nbsp;crashed to a 2-1 defeat at home to 10-man Eintracht Frankfurt.

Japan midfielder Daichi Kamada scored the winner 10 minutes from time while Frankfurt had replacement midfielder Lucas Torro sent off in the dying stages for a second yellow card.

Frankfurt took the lead when striker Andre Silva converted a penalty on 27 minutes, but Wolfsburg equalised when right-back Kevin Mbabu headed home on 58 minutes.

Hoffenheim are seventh after their 1-0 win at Mainz thanks to Ihlas Bebou who darted into the area, swept past two defenders, and fired home on 43 minutes.

On Friday, Leverkusen went third when Germany midfielder Kai Havertz became the first player in Bundesliga history to score 35 goals before his 21st birthday to seal a 1-0 win at Freiburg.

The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) on Monday nominated Amit Panghal along with Vikas Krishnan for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award. Amit's rise in the world of boxing has been meteoric. From winning bronze in Asian Championship 2017, gold and silver in Asian Games 2018 and Commonwealth Games 2018 respectively, to winning gold in Asian Games and again silver in World Championship 2019, Amit has knocked out everyone with his uppercut.

The Southpaw's cumulative award points over a period of four years make him a strong contender for the prestigious award but a doping ban in 2012 make things look grim. In an exclusive interview with WION's Subhayan Chakraborty, Amit Panghal talked about Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award nomination, eligibility issue, training in lockdown, fitness, Olympic gold dream and more.&nbsp;

Subhayan Chakraborty: Amit, congratulations on the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna nomination. Big moment?

Amit Panghal:&nbsp;Definitely! It feels great and I am deeply honoured. I have been trying and fighting for Arjuna Award since the last couple of years and to now get nominated for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna is a huge honour. And if I win it then it will be really special. It will be a massive confidence booster for me and my game.

SC: And the eligibility issue...

AP: Hopefully, they will consider my case for the award.&nbsp;That is a crucial part. I have come a long way since then. It is not in my hands now.&nbsp;

SC: You have had a highly impactful career so far, which is the standout moment for you?

AP: Asian Games 2018 where I won the gold. Aankhein bilkul namm thi...(I was teary-eyed). And that was even more special because my basic coach Anil Dhankar was fasting that day for me. He had said 'I won't eat if Amit doesn't win the gold'. That gold-winning moment and to recall everything on the podium was special.&nbsp;

SC:&nbsp;How much hit has your game taken due to lockdown?

AP:&nbsp;I have maintained my fitness but my game has definitely taken a hit. I haven't been able to do skill-based training, which I am looking forward to resuming as lockdown continues to ease out. Hopefully, the situation will improve soon and we will be able to resume proper training. I would require around 1 month to get back to my peak fitness. Hopefully, I will be able to give my country what no other boxer has given, a gold medal.&nbsp;

SC: What&nbsp;is the next target for you?

AP: I have been winning gold and silvers on a regular basis now and I want to continue it. I want to see our national flag fly as high as possible. Olympic&nbsp;gold is something I have dreamed of and I want to achieve it for my country. I have worked hard on my game and now, as we have some more time, I will try and be the best version of myself in the Tokyo Games. Now with things opening up a bit, I will try and get back to my regular training and get back my peak fitness and rhythm.&nbsp;

Former Sri Lanka skipper Kumar Sangakkara has said that the Indian pair of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli is the defining pair of modern cricket. Lavishing high praise on the swashbuckling Indian duo, the former Sri Lankan captain said that there is something special about Kohli and Rohit while adding the level of consistency both of them have maintained is incredible.&nbsp;

Kohli, who has an average of 60 across formats including 43 centuries is phenomenal. Whereas Rohit had a blockbuster 2019 while scoring 1490 runs including five tons in the World Cup 2019.&nbsp;

“There is something very special about Virat and Rohit. That fact that rules have changed and maybe run-scoring might have become slightly easier in one-day cricket, but the fact remains that to be so consistent across all formats, he’s so consistent in T20 cricket. It’s incredibly hard, the volume of cricket that India athletes plays,” Sangakkara said on the Cricket Connected Show.

“So, I think you have to have a lot of respect for Rohit and Virat but understand that it’s all because of the players that have gone before and have done all the hard work then as well. So, it’s a knock-on effect, so in every era, there’s always a defining pair and in the modern era, it’s Rohit and Virat for India for sure.”

Putting the pairing of Ganguly and Dravid beside Rohit and Kohli, Sangakkara said the latter is more dangerous due to the precise stroke-making while adding the quality has to be admired as they don’t play unorthodox cricketing strokes in a bid to find runs.&nbsp;

“If you look at Rahul and Dada, both of them are orthodox batsmen. They play beautiful cricket shots and are very technically correct, Dravid may be a little bit more so, but the ability to be as destructive with such rate and precision stroke-making is something that has to be really admired,” the former wicketkeeper-batsman added.

“If you take the modern-day game, India has two of the best players in Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who play orthodox cricket but who are just absolutely destructive in any format of the game. You don’t have to muscle the ball or put too much effort or look ugly doing it, they just play good cricket shots and results come.”

La Liga resumes on June 11 after a three-month absence due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Real Madrid and Barcelona have been unable to pull away from each other at the top of the table while Atletico Madrid are involved in what looks like a four-way fight for Champions League qualification.

AFP Sport takes a look at some key issues ahead of the run-in.

<h2>Turbulent title race</h2>

When Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu on March 1, it seemed they had halted a dip in form and seized control of the title race.&nbsp;

But a week later, they handed the initiative back as Barca regained first place by beating Real Sociedad and Madrid lost away at Real Betis.&nbsp;

A three-month break means a fresh start but Barcelona's two-point lead reflects badly on their challengers, given Barca's own problems off the pitch, including the switch to Quique Setien as coach in January.&nbsp;

Both sides' imperfections mean there will be more slip-ups to come but if this Barca make it five league titles in six years, Madrid will only have themselves to blame.

<h2>Unfamiliar homes</h2>

Real Madrid have been given permission by La Liga to play their remaining home games at the Alfredo di Stefano Stadium at their training ground to allow planned construction work to go ahead at the Santiago Bernabeu this summer.&nbsp;

With games being held behind closed doors there would have been little advantage to playing at their usual home and the players might even be better off avoiding an empty 81,000-seater stadium that they are used to being almost full.&nbsp;

<h2>Unexpected returns</h2>

Neither Eden Hazard nor Luis Suarez expected to play much, or perhaps any, part in the run-in after Hazard underwent surgery on a broken foot in March and Suarez had an operation on his right knee in January.&nbsp;

The break has allowed both players to recover and the question now is whether either can find peak form and fitness in time to make an impact in the remaining 11 games.&nbsp;

Suarez's return could be particularly helpful for Barcelona but Setien has said the Uruguayan, who has often taken time to regain sharpness, is not yet ready.&nbsp;

Real Madrid's Hazard, plagued by injuries in recent months, has had a nightmare first year in Spain but has an unexpected chance to turn things around.&nbsp;

<h2>Fight for Atletico</h2>

Atletico Madrid's momentous win over Liverpool in the Champions League offered Diego Simeone some relief after what has been a disappointing season in La Liga.&nbsp;

His team sit sixth in the table, having long fallen out of the reckoning for the title and facing a fight even to make the top four.&nbsp;

Ahead of them between fifth and third are Getafe, Real Sociedad and Sevilla, and with only two points between the four, Atletico could &nbsp;still scrape in.&nbsp;

But the resilient Getafe and free-flowing Real will both be eager to finish off brilliant campaigns while Sevilla appeared to be hitting their stride before games were suspended.&nbsp;

Atletico cannot afford to be complacent.&nbsp;

<h2>Pressure at the bottom</h2>

At the other end of the table, Espanyol look doomed, sitting in last place, six points adrift of safety. Leganes, who still have to play away at Barcelona before hosting Real Madrid on the final day, are only three points better off.&nbsp;

One point then separates Mallorca, Celta Vigo and Eibar, whose players have expressed concerns about the safety of football returning too quickly. Real Valladolid in 15th have a four-point cushion over the bottom three but two wins in their last 10 games suggests they could easily be pulled in too.

The economic hit from the coronavirus pandemic means the stakes are even higher for these clubs, as they battle to avoid the considerable financial blow of relegation. For all of them, the pressure is on.

"I am deeply saddened, truly pained and plain angry," Jordan said Sunday, as protests over Floyd's death on May 25 spawned violence and looting across the US. "I stand with those who are calling out the ingrained racism and violence toward people of color in our country.

"We have had enough," added Jordan, who was famously reluctant to comment on social issues during his playing career.

Floyd died after a white policeman in Minneapolis held his knee on the handcuffed man's neck for several minutes.

"We need to continue peaceful expressions against injustice and demand accountability," Jordan said.

Jordan joined a chorus of voices from the NBA, NFL and other US sports demanding change for black Americans, but the demands went far beyond America.

World champion driver Lewis Hamilton lashed out at "white-dominated" Formula One for failing to speak out against racism.

Hamilton warned "I know who you are and I see you" as the Briton accused his fellow drivers of "staying silent in the midst of injustice" following Floyd's death.

French footballer Marcus Thuram and England international Jadon Sancho both mounted individual protests calling for justice for Floyd after scoring in Germany's Bundesliga on Sunday.

Thuram took a knee after his goal for Borussia Moenchengladbach in a match against Union Berlin, while Sancho marked one of his three goals for Borussia Dortmund against Paderborn by lifting his jersey to reveal a T-shirt bearing the words "Justice for George Floyd".

Thuram's gesture echoed the protest against US racism spearheaded by former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, whose decision to kneel during the national anthem at games in 2016 sparked outrage.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver sent an internal memo to the league's employees saying it shares "the outrage" at the death of Floyd -- which comes in the wake of the police killing in Kentucky of emergency health worker Breonna Taylor in her home, and the fatal shooting of unarmed black jogger Ahmaud Arbery.

"We are being reminded that there are wounds in our country that have never healed," Silver said in the memo published by Yahoo.

"Racism, police brutality and racial injustice remain part of everyday life in America and cannot be ignored."

With US pro sports on hold during the coronavirus pandemic, American athletes had no chance to demonstrate on the field of play.

Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown drove 15 hours to lead a peaceful protest march in Atlanta, Georgia.

"First and foremost, I'm a black man and I'm a member of this community," the Georgia native said.

<h2>- 'Too many tragedies' -</h2>

Los Angeles Clippers coach Doc Rivers, himself the son of a policeman, said that as violence escalated it was imperative to keep Floyd's death at the forefront.

"The response we are seeing across the nation, to the murder of George Floyd, is decades in the making," Rivers said in a statement. "Too often, people rush to judge the response, instead of the actions that prompted it.

"We have allowed too many tragedies to pass in vain. This isn't an African-American issue. This is a human issue," Rivers said.

US tennis great Serena Williams posted an Instagram video featuring a young African-American girl overcome by emotion as she addressed a public meeting, finally able to force out the words: "We are black people, and we shouldn't have to feel like this."

Teenage tennis phenomenon Coco Gauff had a simple question on her Instagram post: "Am I next?"

And two-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka, whose mother is Japanese and father Haitian, reminded her social media followers: "Just because it isn't happening to you doesn't mean it isn't happening at all."

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said the violent protests "reflect the pain, anger&nbsp;and&nbsp;frustration that so many&nbsp;of us&nbsp;feel".

With Kaepernick still unable to find a job in the NFL, not everyone was convinced by Goodell or by San Francisco 49ers chief executive Jed York, who pledged $1 million to combat systemic racial discrimination.

Former 49er Eric Reid, who knelt alongside Kaepernick, tweeted: "Nobody wants your money Jed. We want justice."

'Plain angry' Jordan joins sports world's call for change after Floyd death

The treasurer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Arun Dhumal on Monday said that National Cricket Academy and cricket operations team are working on conducting a training camp for elite cricketers but retracted to put any time frame given the prevailing circumstances.

Even though the central government has been taking gradual steps in opening up the economy, COVID-19 cases continue to witness a sharp spike in India while inching towards the 2-lakh mark.&nbsp;

"The (resumption of) national camp is under review with the cricket operations team and NCA staff working out the possibility to have it as soon as possible. Different states are taking different measures (with regards to relaxation on lockdown), so we will take a call accordingly," Dhumal told PTI.

"Everybody (players) comes from one or the other state. They can coordinate with their respective state association and train till the time it is safe for the entire team to get together," the treasurer once again stressed on the point he had stated before the start of the fourth phase of lockdown.

England cricketers have already started training in batches whereas Australian cricketers have also started their practice sessions with David Warner and Steve Smith attending a practice session in New South Wales on Monday.

"The flights have just started. We will see the progress with regards to the flight situation and take them to a safe location where we are 100 per cent sure of their safety then we can organise that. We are looking into that."

"They can be moved out to a safe location and from there they can join the camp as and when it happens. As I said, we are looking at all the options," said Dhumal when asked about the two-star players.

India's prolific limited overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma was on Saturday nominated for the prestigious 'Khel Ratna' award by the BCCI for his stupendous performance in 2019 when he dazzled with five hundreds in the 50-over World Cup.

Rohit's opening partner Shikhar Dhawan and Ishant Sharma, the most-capped Test cricketer in the current set-up, have been nominated for the Arjuna Award.

In the women's section, Deepti Sharma got BCCI nomination for her consistent show across formats in the last three years.

The PTI on May 13 had reported about Dhawan and Deepti's likely nominations for the Arjuna award.

Dhawan was in fact nominated in 2018 alongside Smriti Mandhana but missed out on the award.

As skipper Virat Kohli has got the highest sporting honour, Rohit with his magnificent white-ball record over the years was an automatic choice. Having scored 9115 runs in 224 ODIs with 29 hundreds and 43 fifties.

He also has 2141 runs in 32 Tests with six hundreds and 10 fifties. In 108 T20 Internationals, the 33-year-old has scored 2773 runs with four fifties apart from being ICC's 'Cricketer of the Year'.

"We went through a lot of data and considered various parameters before shortlisting the nominees. Rohit Sharma has set new benchmarks as a batsman and achieved scores people thought were not possible in the shorter formats of the game," BCCI president Sourav Ganguly said, referring to his three double hundreds in 50-over cricket.

"We feel he is worthy of getting the prestigious Khel Ratna award for his commitment, conduct, consistency and his leadership skills," Ganguly added.

Secretary Jay Shah termed Rohit as perfect "teamman" who led well in absence of regular skipper Virat Kohli.
"In the last five years, Rohit Sharma has not only raised the bar with his individual performances but has also led the Indian team with distinction in Virat Kohli's absence," Shah was quoted as saying in a BCCI press release.

For 31-year-old Ishant, it was a long wait to earn the nomination as he is the senior-most member in the current Test set-up with 97 Tests under his belt apart from 80 ODIs and 14 T20Is.

Ishant has 297 Test wickets under his belt and by the end of the year is expected to be second pacer in the country after Kapil Dev to complet 100 Test matches.

"Fast bowlers are prone to injuries and Ishant has had a fair share of them but he has fought hard to be back on the park every time," Ganguly commented on his nomination.

The 34-year-old Dhawan holds the record for the fastest Test century on debut and is the only batsman in the world to have won two consecutive golden bats (for most runs) in the ICC Champions Trophy.

He is also the quickest Indian batsman to reach 2000 and 3000 runs in ODIs and second-fastest Indian to score 4000 and 5000 runs in ODIs.

In 136 ODIs, he has scored 5688 runs with 17 hundreds apart from 2315 runs in 34 Tests (7 hundreds) and 1588 runs in 61 T20 Internationals.

The 24-year-old Deepti has already played 54 ODIs and 48 T20 Internationals for the country. She also holds the record of highest individual score by an Indian woman in ODIs - 188. She has so far scored 1840 international runs and taken 117 wickets across two formats.

Ace Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah reckons cricket should seek an ‘alternative’ for polishing the ball if the gentlemen’s governing body bans&nbsp;the usage of saliva before the resumption of international cricket following the prolonged break due to COVID-19 pandemic.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is all set to implement a ban on the usage of saliva for the game’s return when they meet after being provided with medical advice that spit poses a COVID-19 transmission risk.

Handshakes, high-fives and hugs are also expected to be out from the game when international cricket resumes with safety protocols in place.&nbsp;

"I was not much of a hugger anyway, and not a high-five person as well, so that doesn't trouble me a lot," Bumrah said in an ICC video chat with the former West Indies pace bowler Ian Bishop and the ex-captain of South Africa, Shaun Pollock.

"The only thing that interests me is the saliva bit," added the 26-year-old Bumrah.&nbsp;

La Liga announces fixtures for 2019-20 season restart; Barca to host Mallorca, Real Madrid to face Eibar

Australia star Steve Smith admitted Monday he has barely picked up a bat since cricket shut down, but said he was in his best physical shape in years.

The 30-year-old, the world's number one Test batsman, has been out of action since March, when Australia's one-day series against New Zealand was abandoned due to the coronavirus pandemic.

He returned to training with his New South Wales teammates Monday as they await the green light for competitive cricket to start again, targeting a home one-day series against Zimbabwe in August.

"I feel like I've had a pre-season the last couple of months. Got myself into probably the best shape I've been in years. Lots of running, lots of gym stuff," Smith said.

"It's been a couple of months of good hard work and now back with the boys, which is great."

But with no net practice, he has barely picked up his bat.

"I haven't touched a bat, really. A couple of little drills at home but that's about it," said Smith, who has plundered more than 7,000 Test runs.&nbsp;

"I've just tried to switch off from it a bit, which I don't do very often. I was just focusing on getting myself fit and strong and refreshing mentally.

If the virus had not struck, Smith would have been in the plane to Bangladesh this month for a two-Test series, after playing in the postponed Indian Premier League.

He was one of six Cricket Australia-contracted players in the New South Wales squad who rejoined their state teammates Monday, including David Warner, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon.

The squad has been divided into four groups who alternate morning and afternoon indoor gym and skills sessions as part of COVID-19 return-to-training protocols.

"It's been a couple of months of good hard work and now back with the boys, which is great." But with no net practice, he has barely picked up his bat. "I haven't touched a bat, really. A couple of little drills at home but that's about it," said Smith, who has plundered more than 7,000 Test runs. "I've just tried to switch off from it a bit, which I don't do very often. I was just focusing on getting myself fit and strong and refreshing mentally. Smith 'in best shape' despite not picking up bat in months

Former skipper Kumar Sangakkara believes missing Angelo Mathews due to an injury hurt Sri Lanka badly in the summit clash of the 2011 World Cup, which hosts India won after a gap of 28 years.

Having played a key role in their thrilling semifinal win against New Zealand, Mathews was forced out of the final against India at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium by a quadriceps muscle injury.

Reflecting on the six-wicket loss to India, the former Sri Lankan captain said Mathews' injury forced him to opt for a 6-5 combination and was also the reason behind his decision to bat first after winning the toss.

"In that WC final, that's the biggest thing I look back and think...You can talk about drop catches and all of that happens. But the composition of the side and the fact that we were forced to make the change was to me the turning point,"

Sangakkara said in the latest episode of Instagram series 'Reminisce with Ash' hosted by India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.

Mahela Jayawardene's unbeaten 103 went in vain as India hunted down 275 with Gautam Gambhir setting up the chase with a 97-run knock before skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni finished off in style, smashing Nuwan Kulasekara for the winning six in his unbeaten 91.

"But for 100 per cent, if Angelo (Mathews) had been fit, I know for sure we would have gone for chase... I'm not sure whether the result would have changed. That balance of team that Mathews would give at seven really was a bonus," the former wicketkeeper batsman said

"If you take our entire campaign, whatever we did Mathews' overs and his ability to bat with the tail and read situations was an incredible bonus to us. He was a young chap who came into the side and from day one he could read situations. It's just instinct, how to up the rate, how to control the bowler, when to accelerate."

During the conversation, Ashwin also asked him about the controversial toss when the coin was flipped twice amid the cacophony of the Wankhede and eventually Sangakkara elected to bat.

"The was crowd was huge. It never happens in Sri Lanka. Once I had this at Eden Gardens when I could not talk to the first slip and then of course at the Wankhede. I remember calling on the toss then Mahi wasn't sure and said did you call tail and I said no I called head.

"The match referee actually said I won the toss, Mahi said he did not. There was a little bit of confusion there and Mahi said let's have another toss of the coin and heads went up again," he said.

"I am not sure whether it was luck that I won. I believe probably India might have batted if I had lost."

The loss prolonged Sri Lanka's wait for another world title as yet again the 1996 champions failed in the final hurdle.

"Whether we win or lose, we have this equilibrium on how to take a win or loss. The smile hides a huge amount of sadness, of disappointment, of thinking of 20 million people back in Sri Lanka who had been waiting for this for so long, since 1996.

"We had an opportunity in 2011, opportunity in 2007, then T20 opportunities in 2009 and 2012," Sangakkara said.

Mathews' absence in 2011 WC final hurt us: Sangakkara

Premier League football is set to return on June 17 after a three-month coronavirus-enforced absence. Nothing realistically will stop Liverpool from being crowned English champions for the first time in 30 years.

But there are a whole host of other issues to sort out, including relegation and next year's European places, with the drama set to take place in empty, echoing stadiums.

AFP Sport takes a look at what still needs to be resolved.

<h2>When will Liverpool be champions?</h2>

Liverpool were 25 points clear of Manchester City and just two wins away from becoming English champions for the first time since 1990 when the league was suspended in March.

But while COVID-19 may have delayed their title party, nobody seriously believes it is not going to happen.&nbsp;

Two more wins would make it mathematically impossible for City to catch Liverpool but the Reds could triumph by winning their first game if City lose at home to Arsenal on June 17.

Jurgen Klopp's men can also break two of City's most cherished records -- they need 19 points from the remaining 27 to beat the Manchester club's&nbsp;total of 100 points from the 2017/18 season and they could also better City's record title-winning margin of 19 points from the same campaign.

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson lifted the Champions League trophy in a packed stadium in Madrid last June but is preparing for a different experience this year.

"Of course it would feel different because if you win any trophy and receive it without any fans there, it would be pretty strange," he told the BBC.

<h2>Champions League battle</h2>

Intriguingly, the battle for the top four might instead be a battle for the top five.

Liverpool are assured of their place in the Champions League and the other top-four places are currently occupied by Manchester City, Leicester and Chelsea.

But as things stand, City cannot compete in Europe's top club competition for the next two seasons after being banned for financial fair play breaches.

Pep Guardiola's side have appealed, however, and could still compete if the suspension is overturned.

If it is upheld, whoever finishes fifth will take their place in next season's Champions League. Manchester United currently occupy that position but Wolves and Sheffield United are both just two points behind Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team.

Eighth-placed Tottenham and Arsenal, one spot lower, will also fancy their chances of finishing fifth with a late charge.

<h2>Battle to avoid the drop</h2>

Norwich, Aston Villa and Bournemouth occupy the bottom three places in the Premier League but all will harbour hopes they can escape the drop.

Norwich are rock-bottom and six points from safety but a win at home to Leicester in late February gave them hope.

Villa had lost four straight games before the shutdown so the break could end up helping the Birmingham team, who have a game in hand over their rivals, while Eddie Howe will be desperate for Bournemouth to find some form after a run of seven defeats in 10 games.

Above the current bottom three, Watford are still in trouble despite their impressive initial revival under Nigel Pearson, while West Ham and Brighton are far from safe.

<h2>Fit to play</h2>

A clutch of top players will be raring to go after lengthy spells on the sidelines.

England striker Harry Kane is hungry for a return and Spurs team-mate Son Heung-min will also be able to feature after recovering from a broken arm.

Manchester United pair Paul Pogba, with just eight appearances this season, and Marcus Rashford, out of action since January with a back injury, should also feature.

Premier League return: the issues to resolve

British Police want at least six Premier League matches and any Liverpool title clincher to be played at neutral venues when the season resumes in a bid to avoid supporters gathering outside stadiums.

Premier League chiefs have set June 17 as the date for the top flight to restart following the coronavirus delay.

They hope to play the majority of the matches behind closed doors on a home and away basis at clubs' usual stadiums.

However, police are concerned about the issue of hardcore fans potentially flouting social distancing rules by congregating wherever their team play.

With Liverpool two wins away from clinching their first English title for 30 years and other relegation and European qualification issues to be decided in the remaining 92 fixtures, there is potential for police resources to be stretched if matches draw crowds outside grounds.

Police bosses have spoken to the Premier League about games they consider especially tricky and the matches they requested to take place at neutral grounds are Manchester City v Liverpool, Manchester City v Newcastle, Manchester United v Sheffield United, Newcastle v Liverpool and Everton v Liverpool.

"Our discussions with the Premier League throughout this process have been positive, with a shared focus on the priority of public health," said Deputy Chief Constable Mark Roberts of South Yorkshire Police.

"As such we have reached a consensus that balances the needs of football, while also minimising the demand on policing.

"The majority of remaining matches will be played, at home and away as scheduled, with a small number of fixtures taking place at neutral venues, which, contrary to some reports, have yet to be agreed."

<h2>- Sporting integrity -</h2>

Liverpool could even clinch the title as early as the first weekend of the restart if Manchester City lose to Arsenal and they beat Everton.&nbsp;

The police statement added that "the game in which Liverpool could secure the league title" should also be moved, although that may end up needing to be more than one match if the Reds did not clinch it at the first attempt.

"The Premier League's ambition is to complete all of our remaining fixtures this season home and away, where possible," a Premier League statement said.

"We are working with our clubs to ensure risks are assessed and minimised, while co-operating with the police at a local and national level.

"Discussions with the National Police Chiefs' Council and UK Football Policing Unit have been positive and are continuing. We are prepared for all outcomes and have a neutral venue contingency."

There had been complaints from some clubs towards the bottom of the table, including Brighton, about the impact of playing at neutral venues on sporting integrity.

Brighton chief executive Paul Barber is confident his relegation-threatened side's matches will not be at neutral venues.

"Obviously the majority of home games we expect to be at home for everybody," he said.

"And I understand there are some small number of games where the police do need to look more carefully at the operations for those games.

"But we don't know which games they are, we haven't been given that information so, as far as we're aware of this side, it doesn't affect our club."

Individual police forces were asked which games concerned them and clubs will hold further discussions on whether to proceed with the season on this basis when they meet again on June 4.

It has not yet been decided where neutral games would be staged.

"The views and agreement of forces which host Premier League clubs have been sought and where there were concerns, the Premier League has been supportive in providing flexibility in arranging alternative venues where requested," Roberts said.

Police want Liverpool title clincher played at neutral venue

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said on Friday that fans could be allowed to attend top-flight matches in the 2020-21 season on a "phased basis".

The Premier League plans to resume the 2019-20 campaign on June 17 following the coronavirus lockdown.

But the remaining 92 fixtures will be played behind closed doors to minimise the health risks of football's return in a country badly hit by the pandemic.

The prospect of playing the next season with no fans is unappetising for the Premier League and Masters suggested it could be possible to being back supporters at some stage.

"No one knows when matches will move away from the behind-closed-doors model and it is right to have contingency plans in place, but there is optimism at the Premier League and at clubs that we will see fans back in the stadiums next season and it may happen on a phased basis," Masters told Sky Sports News.

"Hopefully it will be a huge morale boost and that is what we've been working towards.

"We've got some incredible fans in this country and we all know the Premier League as we know and love it won't be fully back until we have fans back through the turnstiles."

The biggest concern for 'Project Restart' is another wave of the virus, which could lead to the competition being suspended again.

With that in mind, Masters said it was crucial clubs agreed on a plan for what would happen if the season had to end early before games resume.

But he would not be drawn on whether an unweighted points-per-game model would be used in decide the final table in the event of the season being abandoned.

"We need to have plans in place so that we go into the start of the season knowing that if it can't be completed, what then happens," Masters said.

"(But) I'm not going to give away any of the details of the private discussions we are having with our clubs."

<h2>- 'Legitimate concerns' -</h2>

The video assistant referee (VAR) system is set to be used in the remaining matches, but Masters said it would be done remotely rather than from the officials' usual base at Stockley Park.

"VAR has its own social distancing issues but we think there is a way of completing the season with VAR, so absolutely our intention is to complete the season with VAR in place," he said.

"The hub itself could be a problem, so if you can't do the hub you have to do it remotely, and that's what we're looking at."

Police chiefs are concerned about the safety risks of Liverpool fans gathering outside Anfield or any other stadium their team are playing at.

Masters said talks with the police about neutral venues for some games are on-going, but he hopes Liverpool can at least have a trophy presentation.

"They (the police) have legitimate concerns but we think we can mitigate some of the issues they're trying to deal with," he said.

"Ultimately, we want the season to be played out on the pitch and we're discussing a number of options to make it as fair as possible.

"We'll do everything we possibly can to deliver a trophy presentation. It's really important to mark that moment and to give the fans that memory to mark it."

Fans could return for 20-21 season: Premier League chief

The All India Football Federation on Friday decided to delay the start date of the domestic season till further notice in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a circular sent to all its members, the AIFF said it was done by following the guidelines issued by the world body FIFA as well as those by the Indian government.

"In view of the current situation of pandemic, we are unsure as to when things would go back to normal and sports can be played again in the country. Hence, AIFF has decided to postpone the start date of the upcoming season i.E. 2020-21 season and its first registration period till further notice," the AIFF said.

"The same shall be declared through a separate circular," it said in the circular titled 'COVID-19 Football Regulatory Issues in India'.

Last year, the Indian Super League began on October 20 while the I-League started on November 30.

The AIFF said Article 5.1 paragraph 1 of Annexe 3 of the FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players provides that prior to a registration period commencing, associations may amend or modify the dates under "exceptional circumstances".

"The COVID-19 outbreak is clearly an exceptional circumstance, the AIFF said.

"In view of the above, FIFA has decided to allow all its MAsto amend season dates and/or registration periods, either within the FIFA Tansfer Matching System (TMS) or by otherwise notifying FIFA."

The AIFF said its Executive Committee on May 13 took a decision to conclude the current season (2019-20) on its original end date of May 31.

Regarding 'Expiring Agreements and New Agreements', the AIFF said: "There will not be any effects on an agreement expiring at the end of the current season as there is no change in the actual end date of the 2019-20 Season and all such agreements shall expire on their original end date.

"In case, an employment agreement is due to commence at the original start date of a new season, such commencement be delayed until the new start date of a new season.

"Notwithstanding the recommended amendment to agreement dates, any payment that contractually falls due prior to the new commencement date of an agreement should be delayed until the new start date of the 2020-21 Season.

AIFF decides to delay start of upcoming domestic season due to COVID-19 pandemic

UEFA is planning to complete the 2019-20 Champions League and Europa League competitions by playing the remaining round of matches in one host city, as per Getafe president Angel Torres.

Both Champions and Europa League were put on hold at the round of 16 stage in March due to the COVID-19 outbreak with the Champions League final in Istanbul and Europa League spectacle in Gdansk also postponed.&nbsp;

“UEFA’s idea is to play the Champions League and Europa League, starting from the quarter-finals, across one match in one venue although nothing has been confirmed yet,” Torres told Spanish radio station Cadena COPE on Friday.

“They will come to a decision on June 17 (when the executive committee meets).”

According to Torres, the traditional two-legged ties of the knockout competitions until the final will be scrapped with just one match deciding the outcome.&nbsp;

UEFA said: “A working group has been set up with the participation of representatives from the leagues and clubs to examine calendar solutions and format options that would allow for the completion of the current season.

“A variety of options are being looked at and no decisions have been made at this stage.”

Getafe’s round of 16 first-leg match against Inter Milan was postponed after stern criticism by Torres about the match being played in Italy, which was the European epicenter of the pandemic, at that time.

Meanwhile, the second legs of four Champions League RO16 fixture are still pending with four clubs in Atletico Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Atalanta and Red Bull Leipzig qualifying for the quarter-finals.

A Brazilian judge has suspended Neymar's payment of a fine of 88 million reais ($16.28 million) to tax authorities for irregularities, notably in connection with his transfer to Barcelona in 2013.

The judge, Decio Gabriel Gimenez, at a court in Sao Paulo, suspended the payment of the fine "until further notice", on the grounds that the exact amount due to be paid by Neymar was not clarified.

According to Brazilian press reports, the state has already appealed the decision.

In September 2015, the Brazilian Treasury froze 188.8 million reais of the player's assets, due to unpaid taxes linked to his image rights from 2011 to 2013.

Neymar had left Brazilian side Santos for Barcelona in 2013.

The fine was reduced in 2017 after a tax appeals council quashed two of the five convictions.

The Paris Saint-Germain star, the world's most expensive footballer, agreed to pay a much smaller fine, before the treasury announced in 2018 that he still owed 88 million reais.

Neymar's transfer from Santos to Barca attracted the attention of Spanish authorities, who prosecuted the now-28-year-old and the La Liga giants for "fraud" and "corruption".

Barcelona officially said the transfer cost 57.1 million euros ($63.6 million), with 40 million euros going to Neymar's family and 17.1 million to Santos, but Spanish prosecutors later said it actually cost at least 83.3 million euros.

Vincent Kompany has turned down an offer from Manchester City to become Pep Guardiola's assistant coach, according to various Belgian media reports on Friday.

The former City captain is under contract as player-manager of Anderlecht until 2022, having left the Etihad Stadium last year following a trophy-laden 11-year spell in England.

Kompany, who has never concealed his desire to one day be City manager, said he wanted to stay at Anderlecht.

On Thursday, Belgium's most successful club responded to recent financial difficulties as Wouter Vandenhaute took over from Marc Coucke as president.

Anderlecht finished only eighth in the Belgian league season, which was curtailed by the coronavirus pandemic, their worst post-war position.

City boss Guardiola has been looking for a new assistant since Mikel Arteta left Manchester to become Arsenal manager last December.

Kompany, 34, won four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and four League Cups with City and is widely regarded as one of the club's greatest ever players.

The England and Wales (ECB) on Friday confirmed a 55-man back-to-training squad who have been asked to returning to training as England prepare for the resumption of cricket, behind closed doors, subject to UK government clearance. While there were new faces in the list, one big name – Alex Hales – was missing from the list, days after limited-overs skipper Eoin Morgan said it would yet "more time" for the Nottinghamshire batsman to regain trust following a recreational drugs ban before the ICC World Cup 2019.

Hales was dropped from the World Cup squad and missed out on what has been England’s biggest success in their history, winning the quadrennial event. While many have urged the England management to reconsider its stance on Hales, the swashbuckling batsman hasn’t been recalled to the side.&nbsp;

Former England captain Michael Vaughan reacted on Hales’ omission from the side as he took to social media platform Twitter to write: Surprised by @AlexHales1 omission from today’s squads .. He screwed up pre World Cup,was punished correctly &nbsp;&amp; paid the penalty .. but he should have been given a chance now to redeem himself imo !! #Cricket

Hales has been in sensational form in limited-overs cricket and enjoyed a tremendous run with the willow in the Big Bash League (BBL) and Pakistan Super League (PSL). However, his run-scoring prowess has been once again ignored by the ECB and only time will tell when the 31-year-old returns to the England squad.

ECB Performance Director Mo Bobat said: “It’s really pleasing to be in a position to have players returning to training and a huge amount of work has been done by many to get us this far. The pool of players will give selectors strong options when it comes to selecting squads across formats further down the line, as we move closer to our aim of playing international cricket this summer.”

“We will need to continue to work closely with our medical team and government to ensure that our return to training and play activities are in line with best-practice guidelines. We’re also really grateful for the positive and collaborative response from our county colleagues who are doing a great job at facilitating coaching and support for the players. The fact that we can call on our network to support the national effort shows the strength of our system.”

Williams revealed on Friday that they are considering selling the Formula One team after a multi-million pound drop in the company's financial results.

The William Grand Prix Holdings group reported an adjusted loss of £13 million ($15.9 million) for the year ending 2019.

After posting a £12.9 million profit in 2018, Williams have responded to the blow by seeking new investment.

A minority or majority stake will be offered to investors, along with the option for an outright buy-out.

"The WGPH board believes that the strategic review and formal sale process is the right and prudent thing to do in order to take time to consider a full range of options and put the Formula One team in the best possible position for the future," a Williams statement said.

"As part of this new strategic direction, the WGPH board is undertaking a review of all the various strategic options available to the company."

The British-based team are yet to receive any formal approaches but confirmed "preliminary discussions" have taken place with possible investors.

Despite the change of approach, the company said it has both the funds and the intent to reclaim its place on the grid when Formula One returns after the coronavirus crisis.

"Any interested party participating in the formal sale process will be required to enter into a non-disclosure agreement with WGPH on terms satisfactory to the WGPH board," the statement said.

"The company is not in receipt of any approaches at the time of this announcement and confirms that it is in preliminary discussions with a small number of parties regarding a potential investment in the company. There can be no certainty that an offer will be made, nor as to the terms on which any offer will be made.

"While the company has faced a number of challenges, Williams currently remains funded and ready to resume racing when the calendar allows in 2020."
