The British and the Australian MotoGPs were both cancelled on Friday as the coronavirus continued to cut a swathe through international motorsport.

The British race at Silverstone was scheduled for August 28-30, while the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island was due to take place from October 23-25.

"We're saddened to have to announce the cancellation of these iconic events," Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of MotoGP promoter Dorna Sports, said in a statement.

Organisers were unable to find a "way through the logistical and operational issues resulting from the pandemic and rearranged calendar", Ezpeleta said.

Silverstone managing director Stuart Pringle said he was "extremely disappointed about the cancellation of the British MotoGP... but we support the decision that has had to be taken at this exceptional time".

Paul Little, chairman of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation, also expressed disappointment but backed the decision to cancel.

"We're very disappointed that MotoGP fans throughout Victoria, Australia and internationally won't get the chance to make the pilgrimage to see the world's best riders compete on one of the best circuits anywhere in the world, but the right decision has been made," Little said.

Globe-trotting MotoGP and Formula One have both been battered by the coronavirus shutdown, with their seasons yet to start and the prospect of a drastically rejigged schedule in the second half of the year.

Italy's Serie A was given the green light on Thursday to resume on June 20 after a three-month absence as one of the countries hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic begins to ease restrictions.

Sports Minister Vincenzo Spadafora said that the government's Technical and Scientific Committee (CTS) had agreed to the health protocol proposed by Italian football chiefs.

"Italy has started to return to normal life again, it is only right that football should do the same," said Spadafora.

"The federation assured me that it had a Plan B and a Plan C.

"In light of these considerations, the championship can resume on June 20."

Italian football federation (FIGC) president Gabriele Gravina told the minister during the video conference there would be a play-off system if the championship were again interrupted, while the existing standings would be used if it were stopped.

"We had a very useful meeting," said Spadafora. "From the start, I said that football could restart once all the security conditions had been met."

No top-flight matches in Italy have been played since Sassuolo beat Brescia 3-0 on March 9.

One of the hardest hit countries by the coronavirus pandemic with over 33,000 deaths, Italian football now faces a scheduling nightmare, for matches which will take place behind closed doors.

"I'm happy and satisfied," said Gravina.

"The restart of football represents a message of hope for the whole country."

Lega Serie A will meet on Friday morning to examine the different calendar hypotheses for the remaining Serie A and Italian Cup matches, amounting to 127 in total.

Most teams have 12 league games left to play, but there were four postponed fixtures.

Spadafora suggested that the Italian Cup could be concluded the week before the return to Serie A action.

The semi-final return leg matches between Inter Milan and Napoli and AC Milan and Juventus, could be played on June 13-14 with the final on June 17.

"I also hope to be able to send a positive signal to the whole country by taking advantage of the week from June 13 to 20 to conclude the Italian Cup," he added.

The announcement of the resumption of the Italian league comes just after the English Premier League confirmed it will restart on June 17.

The German championship has already resumed and Spain's La Liga will return to the pitch the week of June 8.

Among the five major European championships, only the French Ligue 1 has been definitively stopped.

"Finally today we have a date and the certainty that the championship will resume, it is a further signal that Italy is starting again," said Juventus captain Giorgio Chiellini.

"We can't wait to get on the pitch and do what we love most, certain that we can give so many emotions to the millions of fans who were waiting."

But many issues remain to be resolved including match schedules, players' contracts which end on June 30, and unpaid TV rights by broadcasters.

"Having a certain date is certainly a step forward, but problems remain and we hope to resolve them," said Damiano Tommasi, president of the player's union.

"Footballers are not robots, there are concerns," the former Italy and Roman player said this week.

"A critical issue is (playing a) match at 4.30pm which in June and July in Italy is unthinkable."

The thorniest issue remains the two-week quarantine period in the case of a positive test, which Spadafora insisted would remain.

"The CTS agreed with the medical protocol, but confirmed the absolute necessity for a quarantine period if a player were to test positive," said Spadafora, who did not exclude future changes to the rule.

"I'm ready to bet on the resumption of the championship, but with this rule of quarantine of 14 days, the possibilities of concluding it are not high," said Enrico Castellacci, president of the Italian Football Doctors Association.

"It's a crime. I'm not going to quarantine 50 healthy people. We don't do this if there is a positive case in a factory," argued Lazio doctor Ivo Pulcini, with the Roman club committed to a resumption of the season, as they sit just one point behind leaders Juventus.

There has been a lot of talks surrounding India’s hosting rights for the T20 World Cup in 2021 with the BCCI failing to secure tax exemptions for the showpiece event. Even the ICC has threatened to pull back the tournament from India. A BCCI official has now dismissed all the reports suggesting that India is at risk of losing hosting rights for the T20 World Cup.

Tax exemptions for ICC events are required as per host agreements and the BCCI was supposed to confirm the same by May 18 but the Indian board has asked for an extension citing lockdown rules behind failure to resolve the matter with the Indian government.

Earlier, a report in ESPNCricinfo stated that ICC has threatened to shift the tournament away from India over the tax issues. But BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal has now said that there is “no risk” to the tournament and the negotiations are on with the ICC.

Cricket Australia chief Kevin Roberts has said that the chances of T20 World Cup being played in October-November was under “very high risk” due to COVID-19 pandemic while adding in case the showpiece event gets postponed, there are potential windows in February-March or October-November, 2021.

With the election fever gripping the International Cricket Council (ICC), it was announced by the global cricket body that current president Shashank Manohar is not seeking re-election. As per reports, England’s Colin Graves is a likely successor for the top post and the BCCI will back the Englishman. However, there seems to more about this BCCI-ECB alliance.

According to a report, the BCCI-ECB alliance could open a window for Indian players as for the first time, they may participate in The Hundred tournament next summer.

ECB’s brainchild The Hundred was originally scheduled to be held in July-August this year but was postponed to 2021 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. While the new schedule hasn’t been announced, the report stated that it may be tagged along with India’s tour of England next year.

With COVID-19 pandemic leading to financial blows for every cricket board, England will need BCCI’s support to recover from the hit it has suffered due to the crisis.

"We want something that has global relevance, real commercial power, something that the whole game has ownership of and that reduces our reliance on international cricket, which is currently responsible for more than 90 per cent of our revenue," ECB chief executive Tom Harrison told The Cricketer.

In a report entitled The Impact of Covid-19 on English Cricket, Oakwell states: “The Hundred needs to be able to attract Indian players and subsequently an Indian fanbase, too. The Indian subcontinent constitutes 90% of the 1 billion cricket fans aged 16-69 globally.

"Indian investment into the Hundred, including from IPL team owners, may facilitate the involvement of Indian players in the longer term. In addition to generating revenue out of India, this would be vital in unlocking the south-Asian UK-based fanbase."

This report comes at a time when senior Indian players have been vocal about BCCI not allowing them to go to other countries and participate in cricket leagues and tournaments.

The likes of Suresh Raina, Robin Uthappa have said that playing in other leagues will improve the quality of Indian players and will allow them to get accustomed to different conditions.

The Indian subcontinent constitutes 90% of the 1 billion cricket fans aged 16-69 globally. "Indian investment into the Hundred, including from IPL team owners, may facilitate the involvement of Indian players in the longer term. In addition to generating revenue out of India, this would be vital in unlocking the south-Asian UK-based fanbase." This report comes at a time when senior Indian players have been vocal about BCCI not allowing them to go to other countries and participate in cricket leagues and tournaments. The likes of Suresh Raina, Robin Uthappa have said that playing in other leagues will improve the quality of Indian players and will allow them to get accustomed to different conditions.

Roland Garros chiefs insisted on Wednesday the French Open, delayed until September due to the coronavirus pandemic, will have fans attending even if they still have to abide by social distancing rules.

The claycourt Grand Slam, which should now have been into its first week under its traditional schedule, was pushed back by four months because of the outbreak.

However, tickets bought for the event in its May-June slot were reimbursed rather than transferred, prompting fears the tournament, now due to start on September 20, would be played behind closed doors.

"In the autumn, we will play Roland Garros with an optimum spectator capacity which allows fans to respect social distancing," Jean-Francois Vilotte, the director-general of the French Tennis Federation (FFT), told AFP.

A working group has already been created consisting of the ministries of sports and foreign affairs as well as Roland Garros officials and health bodies.

"The aim is that there will be spectators but we will have the capacity to organise Roland Garros whatever the option decided, including behind closed doors."

For the players, "the prize money is very important" as is the eco-system of tennis in France for which Roland Garros accounts for 80% of revenue.

If fans are to be welcome at the rescheduled tournament, then tickets would have to go on resale.

"We have set ourselves a deadline (for resale) ... but you will not know it," added Vilotte.

"It will be an exceptional tournament anyway," he said, adding the organisation was working on holding a "postponed tournament" and not a "downgraded" version.

- 'Roof baptised' -

In other words, juniors, singles, doubles and wheelchair tennis events will still be staged.

International tennis has been suspended globally since mid-March while Wimbledon was cancelled for the first time since World War II.

The US Open in New York, due to start on August 24, is still under a cloud with organisers due to decide its fate in mid-June.

Officials in Paris have played down hosting a Grand Slam outdoors in a European autumn.

They point to Roland Garros having eight floodlit courts, including all three showpiece arenas -- Philippe Chatrier, Suzanne Lenglen and Simonne Mathieu.

"The point is not to schedule matches late at night but to finish the matches started," said Vilotte, pointing out that night sessions will not start until the 2021 edition when the tournament slips back into its usual May-June home.

The risk of rain is greater in the autumn in Paris.

However, the Philippe Chatrier court at Roland Garros now has a roof, bringing the tournament into line with the other three majors.

"From the start, the objective was to respect the outdoor nature of the tournament," said Vilotte.

"It is not a closed court, contrary to what exists at Wimbledon, at the Australian Open and even at the US Open where the roofs hermetically seal the stadiums to air condition them."

The new roof on Chatrier has 11 metal and canvas sections, weighing 350 tons each for a total area of 10,000 square metres.

It can cover the sport's most famous clay court in 15 minutes, while allowing air to pass through the sides.

The efficiency of the roof, which cost 55 million euros ($60.45 million), was tested during torrential rains that lashed Paris a few weeks ago.

"It was baptised," said Vilotte. "The roof was absolutely not affected by these rains and the water drainage channels worked without any of them overflowing."

The Suzanne Lenglen court will also have a roof installed in time for the 2024 Olympic Games.

Roland Garros planning for fans not empty seats

Alex Hales's hopes of an international recall suffered a setback Wednesday when England limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan said it would take yet "more time" for the Nottinghamshire batsman to regain trust following a drugs ban.

Nottinghamshire opener Hales was dropped from the World Cup squad shortly before last year's tournament after it emerged he had tested positive for drugs.

England went on to win the event on home soil in dramatic fashion without him and he has not played international cricket since.

England, however, are set to name a training squad of up to 45 players on Friday.

It is unlikely players will be allowed to move between formats as England seek to cram a full programme of Test and limited overs internationals into a season that will start in July at the earliest after the coronavirus wiped out the initial few months of their home campaign.

That led to suggestions Hales, who has three of England's five highest Twenty20 scores to his credit, was in line for a recall.

But even though England all-rounder Chris Woakes said last week that Hales deserved a "second chance", Morgan appeared to be in a less forgiving mood.

"On the cusp of a World Cup the huge breakdown in trust between him and the players was extremely dramatic," said Morgan, speaking at an online event to mark the 15-year anniversary of cricket charity Chance to Shine, which promotes the game in British state schools.

"I've certainly spoken to Alex and see an avenue for him to come back."

- 'Values' -

Nevertheless, Morgan added: "It's only been 13 months since the incident. Given that it could have derailed a World Cup campaign, I think it will take more time, yes.

"It's not about performance with Alex, he's a fantastic player and it's never been discussed as to whether he's good enough to be in the squad.

"It's about on and off the field and values we adhere to."

Hales might also have been looking at a recall this season as a way of forcing his way back into the squad for the World Twenty20 in Australia this year.

The International Cricket Council insisted earlier Wednesday that press reports the tournament would be postponed due to the pandemic were "inaccurate", while stressing it was examining contingencies.

Morgan, however, was sceptical about the prospects of the October 18-November 15 going ahead as planned given what he forecast would be Australian government reluctance to let overseas teams into a country where there have been only just over a hundred deaths from COVID-19.

"I'd be surprised if it goes ahead," said Morgan.

"My reasons for that would be if you look at how Australia have handled the pandemic, they've shut down the borders pretty early, had a limited number of cases and deaths in comparison to the rest of the world."

Dashing batsman Morgan, 33, hopes to lead England at the T20 World Cup, whenever it is, and at the following 2021 edition in India, despite a longstanding back problem.

And the left-hander hopes form and fitness will allow him to be involved in the defence of England's 50-over title in India in 2023.

"I think a lot of that is going to be dependent on my body," he said. "If my back continues to get better, yes, that could be a chance. If it continues to deteriorate, you can't look past the T20 World Cups."

The Premier League is all set to return on June 17 following talks between all 20 clubs on Thursday. The Project Restart was handed a massive boost after ‘majority’ of Premier League clubs expressed interest to get the ball rolling in the month of June after contact training was approved on Wednesday.

Defending champions Manchester City will host Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal whereas Aston Villa will take on Sheffield United in what will be the first round of matches post the resumption of the halted 2019-20 season, as per reports. The two matches are the ‘games in hand’ for the four clubs and the round of games will take all 20 Premier League to 29 fixtures in the season.

MS Dhoni last appeared on the cricket field during India’s defeat to New Zealand in the semi-final of the ICC World Cup 2019. Since then, the veteran wicket-keeper has opted to take a sabbatical from the gentlemen’s game. Dhoni was supposed to return in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 but the cash-rich tournament was suspended indefinitely due to COVID-19 pandemic.

While fans are still eagerly waiting to see the former Indian captain in action, #DhoniRetires and #DhoniNeverTires trended on social media platform Twitter on Wednesday and Thursday as fans took a nostalgic trip as they recalled some of the knocks and statistics of Dhoni.

The much-delayed 36th National Games, scheduled for October-November in Goa, was on Thursday postponed indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) recently asked the Goa government that it must host the National Games as scheduled from October 20 to November 4 this year.

However, a spurt in the number of novel coronavirus cases has led to a postponement.

"The National Games organising committee has decided to postpone National Games due to COVID-19 pandemic," Goa's deputy chief minister Manohar (Babu) Ajgaonkar, who also holds the sports portfolio, said in a statement shared by IOA President Narinder Batra.

"... Committee to hold meeting in September end and decide on fixing dates for National Games. (Goa) Government to take advice from Union Sports Ministry, need four months advance notice to organise games," he added.

The previous edition of the Games was held back in 2011 in Jharkhand.

Serie A will learn the fate of the Italian season on Thursday with a government decision awaited on whether football can resume after three months in a country hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic.

Sports Minister Vincenzo Spadafora will hold a video conference at 6:30pm (1630GMT) with representatives of Italian football including federation (FIGC) president Gabriele Gravina and Lega Serie A chief Paolo Dal Pino.

Italian football bosses are hopeful that Italy can follow the German Bundesliga, which has already returned to the pitch, and Spain's La Liga which prepares to kick off again on June 8.

The season has been on hold since March 9 when it was halted as coronavirus infections spread rapidly in Italy. The pandemic has killed more than 33,000 people in the country.

Opposition has been particularly strong in Lombardy, the region most affected by the epidemic with nearly 16,000 deaths alone, and where four Serie A clubs play: Inter Milan, AC Milan, Atalanta and Brescia.

But there are strong indications that Spadafora, who just a month ago said he was "very skeptical" about the possibility of a return, will finally give the green light.

Italy have started to ease their strict lockdown measures and the daily figures have been reassuring, even if the virus is still circulating, especially in Lombardy.

The prospect of seeing Juventus and Lazio compete for the title has become acceptable again.

Italian football bosses want competition to resume on June 13, with the possibility of starting with Italian Cup semi-finals, followed by a full return to competition on June 20.

The worst-case scenario would be a government refusal to return to action which, like in France, would signal the end of the season.

But even in the event of a government green light on Thursday, the football world will have to complete the health protocol applicable for competition.

- Thorny quarantine dilemma -

Many issues remain to be resolved including match schedules, players' contracts which end on June 30 and unpaid TV rights by broadcasters.

But the thorniest remains the two-week quarantine period in the case of a positive test.

Bologna on Wednesday announced a "suspicious case" among one of their coaching staff.

Pending final results, the team have returned to individual training.

Above all, players and staff members must, if the positive test is confirmed, submit to a two-week quarantine period.

Football authorities remain hopeful that with the curb of contagions falling they can request that the quarantine period be reduced to seven days and that it no longer be collective.

"I'm ready to bet on the resumption of the championship, but with this rule of quarantine of 14 days, the possibilities of carrying it out are not immense," said Enrico Castellacci, president of the Italian Football Doctors Association.

"I'm not going to quarantine people who are in good health. We don't do this if there is a positive case in a factory," argued Lazio team doctor Ivo Pulcini, with the Roman club committed to a resumption of the championship, as they sit just one point behind leaders Juventus.

But first teams need the green light from Spadafora, who has blown hot and cold on calcio throughout the crisis.

Sports daily Corriere dello Sport warned that the minister was "a formidable specialist in traps and surprises".

"Spadafora, no jokes!" wrote daily Tuttosport.

The Turin newspaper recalled that accounting for one percent of GDP and more than 1.2 billion euros ($1.3 billion) in taxes paid, football is not a trivial sector for the Italian economy.

Serie A will learn the fate of the Italian season on Thursday with a government decision awaited on whether football can resume after three months in a country hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic.

Former NBA stars Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett and six others are also slated to be enshrined next year due to the ongoing global coronavirus pandemic.

The father of Aston Villa manager Dean Smith has died after contracting the coronavirus, the English Premier League club announced late Wednesday.

Villa said 79-year-old Ron Smith, a lifelong fan of the Birmingham side, had been suffering from COVID-19 for four weeks.

"The Aston Villa family are saddened to announce that Ron Smith, the father of our current head coach Dean, has passed away at the age of 79," said a club statement.

"Ron, who had recently been living in a care home after being diagnosed with dementia six years ago, contracted coronavirus four weeks ago and after a short spell in hospital passed away with his family at his side.

"A lifelong supporter, Ron was a steward at Villa Park for many years and passed on his love of the club down to his children.

"As well as being a regular at home games, Ron was also there to witness that greatest of days in May 1982 when Villa lifted the European Cup in Rotterdam.

"The thoughts of everyone at the football club are currently with Dean and his family at this most distressing of times and we would kindly ask for the family's privacy to be respected."

Smith is not the only Premier League boss to lose a close relative to the virus, with COVID-19 also claiming the life of the 82-year-old mother of Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola last month.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has said that it will not support any move from the International Cricket Council (ICC) to reschedule the T20 World Cup for Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020. PCB further said the ICC should not prioritise a ‘domestic tournament’ (IPL) for an international tournament or bilateral series.

The BCCI is optimistic about conducting the IPL later in the year after the cash-rich tournament was postponed indefinitely due to COVID-19 pandemic and strict lockdown measures. ICC Board meeting is slated for Thursday and a decision could be taken on the T20 World Cup, however, an official announcement is not expected following a meeting.

PCB is of the view that ICC members should wait for a couple of months before taking a call on T20 World Cup. The Pakistan board also said a lot will depend on how the West Indies and Pakistan’s tour of England goes.

"We are in May and there is still time. The ICC members should wait and see where this Coronavirus pandemic goes. A decision on staging the event can be taken even after say two months," a PCB official was quoted as saying by PTI.

"There is no cricket being played right now but in two months' time we will know what is the position because West Indies and Pakistan are to play in England if things go according to plan," he added.

If the IPL is cancelled then the BCCI is expected to take a financial hit of around Rs 4,000 crore. Sri Lanka and UAE have also proposed to host IPL 2020 outside India.

Pakistan will not support ICC in rescheduling of T20 World Cup for IPL 2020: PCB official

There might be no fans in the stadiums but the Bundesliga knows the world is watching and on Tuesday Bayern Munich's Thomas Mueller was part of its charm offensive.

Because of the coronavirus pandemic the German top-flight is the only top-level game on the planet and football fans everywhere are watching.

After scoring the only goal as Bayern won a crunch match in Dortmund, Joshua Kimmich displaced Donald Trump as the top-trending subject on Twitter in the US.

Cue Bayern veteran Mueller smiling and joking as he reached out to international viewers with a post-match interview in almost faultless English.

Mueller is known in his own country as a an interviewee with a sense of humour.

After the victory, he beamed as he faced a microphone and happily showed off his German sense of humour as he talked about the length of Roman Buerki's arms and compared teenage team-mate Alphonso Davies to the Roadrunner, complete with sound effects.

Mueller described Kimmich's game-winning lob over home keeper Buerki as "having a long hang time" while miming watching the ball pass over his head.

"I had a good feeling," he said.

"Roman Buerki is a great keeper but one of his strengths is that he is maybe one of two steps outside his goal because maybe he has not got the longest arms so with these one of two steps he tries to have a better angle and Joshua saw that."

The interviewer quickly asked about the impressive and pacy Canada wing-back Davies, who tracked back to tackle a counter-attacking Erling Braut Haaland in the first half.

"A player with a lot of heart and with extreme power," said Mueller, a 30-year-old Germany international. "Although sometimes he has not the best position."

"When the opponent thinks 'Oh, I have time,' 'meep, meep, meep' the Roadrunner comes and steals the ball."

Mueller was pleased with his team's display in a game in which both teams showed occasional signs of rust.

"We did a great performance. With the ball perhaps not our best, but with our heart and that's the most important thing," said Mueller, tapping his chest.

"This game is maybe the decider and we won it. It's a great feeling"

"It looks better than before."

Olympic chief Thomas Bach on Wednesday held a series of talks with International Olympic Committee members on the potential consequences of the coronavirus pandemic that has seen the Tokyo Games pushed back a year to 2021, sources said.

Bach was to address the 100 IOC members in three different sessions decided by language and local time zone.

Bach's aim is to canvas the members for their view on "how to handle the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic", a source told AFP.

The IOC president wants to hear "thoughts, ideas and experiences of all members across the globe", it added.

While Bach addressed all Olympic actors on March 24 when announcing the postponement of the Tokyo Games, it is the first time since the COVID-19 outbreak that he has specifically consulted IOC members.

Bach was backed up by Olympic Games executive director Christophe Dubi, IOC sports director Kit McConnell, IOC director general Christophe De Kepper and chief operating officer Lana Haddad.

The IOC's medical and scientific director, Richard Budgett, also took to the floor to discuss "the issue of a vaccine", according to a second source.

Bach warned last week that 2021 was the "last option" for holding the delayed Tokyo Games, stressing that postponement cannot go on forever.

He said he backed Japan's stance that the Games will have to be cancelled if the coronavirus pandemic isn't under control by next year.

The German wouldn't say, however, whether a vaccine was a prerequisite for going ahead with the Olympics, but was lukewarm on the idea of holding them without fans.

In March, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics were postponed to July 23, 2021 over the coronavirus, which has killed hundreds of thousands around the world and halted international sport and travel. It was the first peacetime postponement of the Olympics.

The IOC has already set aside $800 million to help organisers and sports federations meet the extra costs of a postponed Olympics.

According to the latest budget, the Games were due to cost $12.6 billion, shared between the organising committee, the government of Japan and Tokyo city.

Confined to their hostel rooms for more than two months due to the coronavirus-forced lockdown, elite Indian athletes such as javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra and sprinter Hima Das started outdoor training at the Sports Authority of India centre in Patiala on Wednesday.

The SAI said training, which also resumed at its Bengaluru centre, took place in strict compliance with the health guidelines of the government and the Standard Operating Procedure that was unveiled last week.

"Elite athletes housed in the National Centre of Excellence in Patiala and Bangaluru have resumed sporting activities from Wednesday...," the SAI said in a statement.

The National Centre Of Excellence (NCOE) Patiala, also known as National Institute of Sports (NIS), is currently home to weightlifters, including those who have qualified for Tokyo Olympics, and eminent track and field athletes such as Neeraj and Hima.

The Bengaluru centre is host to the senior men's and women's national hockey teams and race walkers like K T Irfan and Bhawana Jat.

"In keeping with the government guidelines, all necessary safety measures of hygiene and social distancing are being maintained by athletes on the field of play," the SAI said.

"Equipment are being self-sanitised by athletes after use and no two athletes are allowed to use the same equipment during the sports activity."

The SAI further stated that in both the centres, the athletes trained in staggered schedules to ensure social distancing.

"Sanitisation of hands, shoes and kits is being followed at both the centres."

Athletes at all the SAI centres across the country were stuck in their rooms after the government imposed a nationwide lockdown on March 25 to control the COVID-19 pandemic.

But the sportspersons heaved a sigh of relief when the government, on May 17, permitted the use of stadia and sports complexes without spectators and under strict guidelines, allowing the athletes to return to outdoor training.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has threatened to pull back India’s hosting rights for the 2021 T20 World Cup as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) failed to get tax exempted for the tournament.

Following BCCI’s failure of getting tax exempted for the T20 World Cup, ICC has sent hard-hitting emails to the Sourav Ganguly-led Indian board while reminding that cricket’s global body reserves the right to shift the marquee tournament from India.

A deadline of May 18 was given to BCCI by the ICC to sort out the tax issue with the Indian government but the Indian board had asked for the deadline to be extended to June 30.

"In light of the BCCI's notification of force majeure, we would highlight the obligation on the BCCI of the Host Agreement and that IBC (ICC Business Corporation) is entitled to terminate the agreement with immediate effect at any time from 18 May 2020," Jonathan Hall, the ICC's general counsel, was quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

"The BCCI has clearly had many years to arrange the tax solution which is why the agreement asks for it to be provided .no later than 18 (eighteen) months prior. and why the BCCI was required to provide it by 31 December 2019. In such circumstances, IBC is not prepared to agree to the requested extension to June 30, 2020 or 30 days after the lockdown is lifted whichever is later.

"In the meantime, all of IBC's rights are reserved in full including the right to challenge whether or not a valid force majeure exists," Hall wrote in a letter to the BCCI on April 29.

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson says playing at an empty Anfield and winning the Premier League title with no fans present would be "pretty strange".

Liverpool were 25 points clear of 2019 champions Manchester City and on the verge of their first English top-flight crown for 30 years when the league was shut down by coronavirus in March.

Clubs returned to training in small and socially distanced groups last week ahead of a proposed restart in June.

Henderson lifted the Champions League trophy in a packed stadium in Madrid last June but is preparing for a different experience this year.

"Of course it would feel different because if you win any trophy and receive it without any fans there, it would be pretty strange," he told the BBC.

The 29-year-old England international midfielder said the title race was still not over.

"We still have work to do and we still need to perform at a high level right the way until the season finishes because we want to finish as strongly as we can to make sure it is a full season," he said.

Henderson, who has been pivotal in Liverpool's renaissance under Jurgen Klopp, said he hoped there would be a title celebration with fans inside Anfield in the future if, as appears certain, they finish the job.

"Whether we win it or whatever, then (receiving) the trophy and the fans not being there... you just have to deal with it when it comes," he said.

"Hopefully it does happen. We are still in a very good position.

"It will mean we have won the Premier League and we will all be very happy but then we can look to the future -- and whenever fans are allowed back into the stadium, I am sure we will have some sort of celebration together."

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has warned that the transfer market will look drastically different due to the coronavirus fallout, saying football will not be ready for "crazy numbers".

Spurs bought Steven Bergwijn for £27 million ($33 million) from PSV in January, while also breaking their club record to sign Tanguy Ndombele for a reported £54 million last year.

But Mourinho believes the Premier League and other leagues around the world will need a different approach to cope with the financial impact of COVID-19.

"It is normal you are going to have a different market," the 57-year-old told Sky Sports. "I don't see the world, and especially the football world, ready for some crazy numbers we are used to having and some crazy investments that sometimes some clubs and some leagues are used to doing.

"But my first question after that is: 'When will the transfer window be?' Because I don't think it will be July-August any more, it will obviously have to go further than that.

"If you ask me what I want in my club, I would like my club to be what I know it is going to be: sensible, balanced, not going to spend rivers of money, and we are trying to respect the situation, not just of football but of the world and society overall."

The Premier League is yet to set a date for a return and players have not resumed full-contact training.

Top-flight clubs are expected to approve phase two of training on Wednesday as they inch closer to a restart after the postponement of the Premier League in March.

The Bundesliga has already resumed and Mourinho is itching to get playing again.

"Honestly, since the moment Bundesliga started, the Portuguese league and Spanish league announced a date to start, I think it is the most difficult moment for us, because we want to play," he said.

"It is hard to see other countries playing football and we don't do it."

Cricket Australia (CA) has locked in the hosts for the four-match Border-Gavaskar Test series against India later in the year with Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney gearing up to host the Virat Kohli-led outfit.

The four-match Test series between India and Australia will commence at the Gabba, on December 3, where the Baggy Greens haven’t lost a Test since 1988.

Following the series opener, India will head to Adelaide in a bid to end Australia’s unbeaten record in day-night Tests at the iconic venue, as per a report. Interestingly, Perth has been omitted from the list of venues and the series will consist of just one day-night match.

The monumental Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) will then host India for the traditional boxing Day Test before both the teams move to Sydney for the New year Test.

As the situation surrounding COVID-19 is improving in Australia, it is possible that the tour could go without the quarantine hub. However, it is yet unclear whether fans will be allowed to witness the much-awaited series.

Former Australia pacer Brett Lee is of the view that it will be tougher for bowlers to regain the lost rhythm after cricket resumes post lockdown while adding they will need at least eight weeks to get back to optimum fitness for any format of the gentlemen’s game.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has recommended a minimum preparation period off eight to 12 weeks for Test bowlers, six weeks for ODIs and five weeks for T20s as cricket gears up to come back to life.

When asked on ‘Cricket Connected’ about the preparation phase for players after the lockdown, Lee, who has played 76 Tests and 221 ODIs for Australia, said that bowlers require six to eight weeks to regain the full pace again after a prolonged break.

"I think it's hard on both batsmen and bowlers."

"Probably takes a bit longer for a bowler to try to find that form, because its normally a six to eight-week period where you get upto full pace again," Lee said.

"Playing one-day cricket or Test cricket, a good eight weeks of leading and bowling at full pace to get into that match fitness. So, it will be a bit tougher for the bowlers," added the pacer.

Just a day before the all-important International Cricket Council (ICC) meeting, reports surfaced on May 27 (Wednesday) that the T20 World Cup 2020, scheduled to be hosted by Australia in October-November, has been rescheduled to 2022, opening a window for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020.

WION contacted the ICC to get a clearer picture regarding reports of the postponement of T20 World Cup 2020 and the global cricket body said that no decision has been taken to postpone the showpiece event and the preparations are ongoing for the tournament in Australia later in the year, as per the initial plans.

“ICC has not taken a decision to postpone the T20 World Cup and preparations are ongoing for the event in Australia this year, as per plan. The topic is on the agenda for ICC Board meeting tomorrow and a decision will be made in due course,” said an ICC spokesperson on Wednesday.

As per earlier reports, the T20 World Cup was set to be rescheduled to 2022 with India hosting the T20 World Cup and 50-over World Cup in 2021 and 2023 respectively. However, the ICC has now rubbished all the reports while stating no decision has been taken on the marquee event while adding the topic is on the agenda for ICC Board meeting on May 28 and a decision will be made in due course.

Notably, no major ICC tournament is scheduled in the year 2022 and it would be interesting to see whether the apex cricket body shifts the tournament by two years. However, a proper call on the tournament is expected following ICC Board meeting on May 28 (Thursday).
