NBA player Stephen Curry chanted the name "George Floyd" as he and some of his Golden State Warrior teammates joined a throng of protesters at a peaceful march in California on Wednesday.

Curry, along with Klay Thompson, Kevon Looney and Damion Lee, participated in the Oakland march to protest the killing of Floyd, an African American man who suffocated as a white police officer knelt on his neck on May 25 in Minneapolis.

As some protesters called for others to "Say his name", Curry was among those shouting their response: "George Floyd."

The march took place in the same location as the NBA club's championship rallies and parades.&nbsp;

"We're all here for the same purpose, not just for black people," said march spokesman Juan Toscano-Anderson.&nbsp;

"Right now it's about black people, but for humanity. There's people all over the world being oppressed.&nbsp;

"And we're just trying to take a step in the right direction and start something -- me and my boys, my brothers. Thank you guys for being here."&nbsp;

Floyd was in custody for allegedly using counterfeit money to try and buy cigarettes when Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on his neck for more than eight minutes.&nbsp;

Chauvin, who was fired, was initially charged with third-degree murder, but prosecutors changed it to second-degree murder on Wednesday.&nbsp;

Tokyo 2020 officials are looking at ways to scale back next year's postponed Olympics, the city's governor said Thursday, amid reports the opening ceremony could be streamlined and spectator numbers cut.

Yuriko Koike told reporters that organisers were weighing up what could be "rationalised and simplified" as costs spiral for holding the first postponed Games in history.

The International Olympic Committee announced in March the Games would be delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic that has killed hundreds of thousands and brought international travel to a virtual halt.

The Games are now due to open on July 23, 2021, but organisers face the unprecedented headache of rearranging the event, which requires a costly rejigging of everything from venues to transport.

Local media said streamlining plans could involve cutting the number of spectators attending indoor competitions and reducing participation in the opening and closing ceremonies.

The Yomiuri Shimbun daily quoted an unnamed source as saying that everyone including athletes, officials and spectators would be required to take a test for the virus.

"The top priority is to avoid the worst scenario of cancelling the Games," an unnamed government source told the daily.

Tokyo 2020 spokesman Masa Takaya was due to brief the media later Thursday.

IOC chief Thomas Bach said last month that 2021 was the "last option" for holding the Tokyo Games, stressing that postponement cannot go on forever.

He declined to say whether a vaccine was a prerequisite for going ahead with the Olympics, but was lukewarm on the idea of holding them behind closed doors.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has said it would be "difficult" to hold the postponed Tokyo Olympics if the coronavirus pandemic is not contained.

And Tokyo 2020 president Yoshiro Mori has said the Olympics would have to be cancelled if the coronavirus pandemic isn't brought under control by next year.

All Blacks legend Dan Carter announced his return to Super Rugby at the age of 38 on Thursday, extending the career of the double Rugby World Cup winner and three times world player of the year.&nbsp;

AFP Sport looks at five other athletes who made famous comebacks:

<h2>- Tiger Woods -</h2>

The US superstar returned to the summit of golf in April last year at the age of 43 when he ended an 11-year major drought by winning an emotional fifth US Masters at Augusta, 14 years after his last Green Jacket.

It followed multiple surgeries and a string of off-course problems since his 14th major win at the 2008 US Open, with Woods at one point fearing he may never play again.

His feat was hailed as inspirational by a who's who of the sporting world and the following month he became the fourth golfer to be awarded the&nbsp;Presidential Medal of Freedom.

He capped a remarkable 2019 by equalling Sam Snead's all-time record of 82 US PGA Tour wins at the Zozo Championship in Japan in October.

<h2>- Michael Jordan -</h2>

Considered the greatest basketball player of all time, Jordan famously signed for the Chicago White Sox baseball team after unexpectedly retiring from the NBA during his prime in 1993, and was given a minor league contract.&nbsp;

But his baseball career never took off and he triumphantly returned to the hoops barely a year later, leading the Chicago Bulls to three more championships in 1996, 1997, and 1998.

The American claimed he had lost the desire to play basketball after his father's death and wanted to do something different.

He retired again in 1998, before returning for a less memorable stint with the Washington Wizards in 2001.&nbsp;

<h2>- Niki Lauda -</h2>

Austrian driver Lauda appeared to be cruising to a second Formula One World Championship in 1976 when disaster struck at the German Grand Prix in Nuerburgring.

Lauda's Ferrari swerved off the course and struck an embankment, before exploding in flames. Lauda was trapped in the wreckage and suffered severe burns before being pulled to safety.&nbsp;

He made an incredible return to racing 43 days later at the Italian Grand Prix but was pipped to that year's drivers' crown by James Hunt.&nbsp;

He went on to win two more world championships in 1997 and 1984. He died in May last year aged 70.

<h2>- Monica Seles -</h2>

Monica Seles looked poised to rule women's tennis in the early 1990s, becoming the youngest woman to reach the world number one ranking in 1991 before winning three out of four Grand Slams in 1992 with victories at the Australian, French and US Opens.

In 1993 she again looked set to dominate, opening the year by winning the Australian Open with a defeat of German great Steffi Graf.

In April, however, Seles was stabbed by a deranged spectator while playing at a tournament in Hamburg.

Although she soon recovered from her physical injuries, the emotional scars meant Seles did not return until 1995 and the following year she won her 10th and last Grand Slam at the Australian Open.

<h2>- Michael Phelps -</h2>

The greatest medal winner in Olympics history, a burned-out Phelps called it quits after his fourth Games at London 2012 with 18 golds to his name.

He spent 20 months on the sidelines, gaining weight, playing golf and being treated for alcohol problems before deciding the water was where he wanted to be, returning for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The American crowned his glittering career with five more golds to extend his all-time Olympic record to 23 gold, three silver and two bronze medals at the age of 31, well beyond the typical peak age for a male swimmer.&nbsp;

He has subsequently spoken of a battle with depression since retiring for a second time.

Golden years: Five great sporting comebacks

England captain Joe Root would be missing the first Test match against West Indies in July if it clashes with the birth of his child. However, Root has given his full backing to vice-captain Ben Stokes, who would be taking over the charge if the right-handed batsman is absent from the inaugural Test of the three-match Test series against the Men from the Caribbean.

The Test series between England and West Indies is set to commence from July 8 in Southampton, subject to government approval.&nbsp;
Root’s wife Carrie is due to give birth to their second child early in July and the English Test captain confirmed that he is in talks with the board about whether he would be able to leave the on-site hotel and then return to the bio-secure venue.

“The due date complicates things slightly. In terms of the bubble and the pregnancy, it’s always an evolving thing,” Root told reporters.

“It’s being discussed with the medical team and we’re always trying to stay updated with it. How it will finally look I’m not exactly sure right now.

“It will have to come down to government guidelines and we have to make sure we follow those protocols and do whatever is right by that.”

“One of his great qualities as vice-captain is the example he sets -- the way he goes about his training, how he wants the ball in difficult circumstances, the way he stands up in difficult scenarios with the bat,” Root added.

“Those are great qualities to have as leader and something he could definitely take into captaincy. I love having him as vice-captain and could see him doing a very good job as captain.”

Former Pakistan pacer, Shoaib Akhtar, has been pulled up by the cybercrime unit for ‘spreading propaganda and false allegations against the Pakistan Cricket Board’. Akhtar, who has been controversy’s favourite child, finds himself in trouble after the PCB reportedly filed a complaint with the cybercrime unit of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in relation to commenting on PCB Chief Executive Wasim Khan.&nbsp;

The complaint from the PCB also came against board members, Noman Butt, Tariq Sarwar and Shakeel Shaik, with the latter particularly accused of using inappropriate language against the PCB CEO, according to a report in Cricket Pakistan.&nbsp;

Several former cricketers including Akhtar have spoken strongly against the PCB and its cricketing system with many urging to bring more reputed players within the board for the betterment of Pakistan cricket. Gareth Bale's agent says the Real Madrid forward is unlikely to return to the Premier League because he wants to finish his career at the Bernabeu.

Bale is believed to have a difficult relationship with Real manager Zinedine Zidane and was almost sold to Chinese Super League club Jiangsu Suning last year.

The former Tottenham star has been linked with a move back to the Premier League on several occasions, with Newcastle the latest club to be mentioned as suitors for the Wales international.

But Bale's agent Jonathan Barnett said the 30-year-old would happily remain in Spain.

"He has a very nice lifestyle. I don't see why he doesn't see his career out at Madrid, probably," Barnett told the BBC on Thursday.

"As I've always said, he's quite happy in Madrid. It's his life that he wants to lead.&nbsp;Financially, he will want for nothing the rest of his life, and his children and grandchildren."

Bale has won a host of medals, including four Champions League titles, since joining Real for a then-world record £85 million ($107 million) in 2013.

But he has rarely been a regular under Zidane and has been criticised by fans and media in Spain for putting more passion into his golf hobby than his Real career.

Despite that discord, Bale has no plans to demand a move, according to Barnett.

"I have no idea what his value is," he said. "His salary is quite high and also where he wants to go is very important in his life. I can't put a figure on it.

"He's won nearly everything in the world, except the World Cup, but unfortunately he plays for Wales so some things are beyond him.

"So he's won everything else, to come back and play (in the Premier League) would be unbelievable, a big thing. I don't think he wants to do that at the moment. He's quite happy to play at Real Madrid."

Australia's world-cup winning captain Meg Lanning is hopeful that the women's ODI World Cup will go ahead as planned next year and remains confident that their preparation for the big-ticket event will not be affected due to the coronavirus-forced break.

The 50-over World Cup is scheduled to be held in New Zealand in February-March next year but with the COVID-19 pandemic taking a toll on international tournaments such as the T20 men's World Cup, there are speculations that it could have a domino effect on the women's event.

"At this stage, we anticipate the World Cup to go ahead as scheduled (early next year) but have to wait and see how that plays out. We've got a plan in place for what it looks like but also fully understanding things can change pretty quick," Lanning told cricket.Com.Au.

"The group we've got, we've played a lot of cricket together over a long period of time and if it (the coronavirus) means we've only got a short time to prepare and get ready (for the World Cup), I've got no doubt we'll be able to do that. We'll be ready to go."

Women's cricket got a major fillip when Lanning led Australia to their fifth title, beating India by 85 runs in the T20 World Cup final in front of a packed 86,000 spectators at the iconic MCG.

It was the last top-tier tournament to be held before the global health crisis halted all cricket activities worldwide.

Lanning said the forced break due to the COVID-19 pandemic will not affect the popularity and momentum which women's cricket gained post this year's T20 World Cup in March.

"I don't think it'll (coronavirus) be a massive impact," she said.

"Luckily for us, it was actually the last big tournament that got played. It's sort of the last one in everyone's memories and it was such a great event. Hopefully, it's not all lost."

The 28-year-old batswoman said she is currently enjoying the time off from cricket and working towards her Level 3 coaching badge, besides starting a business degree.

"Timing-wise coming off the World Cup it was not too bad. I've enjoyed the break and the chance to spend some time at home and do all the normal things you forget about when away on tour," Lanning said.

"I haven't hit a cricket ball in eight weeks. It's been a while, and I was looking forward to that break after the World Cup. I've been exercising a fair bit to keep me sane but it's nice to get back into training now."

Robin Uthappa emerged as one promising batsman in Indian cricket. A solid domestic record and his ability to strike the ball clean made him a bright prospect in the Indian top-order, however, he failed to cement his spot in the senior team. But he had his battle with mental challenges which made him contemplate suicide several times.&nbsp;

While speaking at Royal Rajasthan Foundation’s live session ‘Mind, Body and Soul’, Uthappa revealed that the phase between 2009-2011 was the toughest for him and it became difficult for him during the off-season and non-playing days.&nbsp;

“I remember around 2009 to 2011, it was constant and I would deal with that on a daily basis. There were times where I wasn’t even thinking about cricket, it was probably the farthest thing in my mind,” he said.

“I was thinking about how I would survive this day and move on to the next, what’s happening to my life and in which direction am I heading. Cricket kept my mind off of these thoughts but it became really difficult on non-match days and during the off-season.”

Uthappa further said he thought of jumping off the balcony while adding something held him back from doing so. The stylish right-handed batsmen then emerged as one of the most consistent performers in Indian Premier League (IPL) for Kolkata Knight Riders as he became the spine of the team in the top-order.

“On days, I would just be sitting there and would think to myself on the count of three, I’m going to run and jump off of the balcony but something kind of just held me back,” he recalled.

“...(I) started the process of just understanding myself as a person. I then started to seek outside help to make those changes I wanted to make in my life,” he said.

“...for some reason there, no matter what I did or how hard I worked in the nets, I was just not able to score a run off my bat. I would spend hours in the nets to get it right but that would just not happen,” he said.

“Some part of me was actually not willing to accept that I had a problem with myself...I think sometimes we don’t accept the wrong and are unwilling to do so and it is really important to have the acknowledgement.”

“The unwillingness to accept is the no one issue and especially for men, who find it difficult to accept their mental issues,” he added.

The 34-year-old was bought for Rs 3 crore by Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2020 auction after being released by KKR following years of solid service. Uthappa continued that having negative experiences in life adds to one’s growth but added it is good to talk to others when a person is having a tough time battling the challenges in life.

“I feel sometimes being negative is necessary. Being negative or having negative experiences, going through trials and tribulations is sometimes necessary for one’s own growth,” he asserted.

“...I have no regrets on my negative experience as they’ve helped me develop positively. You need to go through the lulls to make you feel ecstatic about the positives.”

“I feel life is about balance and we can’t have it one way, a lopsided life is not going to be great, both negative and positive experiences are essential,” he said.

Ace Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya is concerned about risking his injury-ravaged back for Test cricket, at the moment, as he said that he understands his “importance” in the limited-overs formats. Hardik last appeared in a Test match back in September 2018 but has been a vital cog in India’s white-ball circuits.&nbsp;

Hardik is of the view that playing Test cricket following his back surgery will be a challenge and is wary of risking his back in the longest format of the game. Hardik further added that playing Test cricket has drained him on many occasions after which he couldn’t perform up to his potential in white-ball cricket as energy is one of his traits. He also recalled how he felt his career was over after being stretchered off in the Asia Cup 2018 match against Pakistan.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp cannot wait for English football's return after a three-month layoff due to the coronavirus pandemic and promised to celebrate the Premier League title in style when it is safe to do so.

Liverpool are just two wins away from securing their first league title in 30 years.

The Reds held a commanding 25-point lead over Manchester City when play was halted in March.

Klopp's men could even clinch the title with victory in their first game back if City lose to Arsenal in one of two games scheduled to take place on June 17, before the first full round of matches the following weekend.

"I have missed it so much it's unbelievable," Klopp told the BBC.

"I know it's not the most important thing in life but it is my passion. I hope the people are looking forward to it because we are."

After such a long wait to win the Premier League, Liverpool face the anti-climax of doing so in front of empty stands with all remaining 92 league games to be played behind closed doors.

A year ago to the day, tens of thousands of fans poured onto the streets around Liverpool to celebrate a sixth European Cup win.

And Klopp insisted there will be a parade to celebrate the title, even if it is many months after the league is won.

"If we become champions, whatever celebrations are possible we will do as a team internally and with all our supporters in the moment we are allowed to do so again," he added.

"I can promise that if it happens, there will be a parade as well. Whenever. Who cares! We only need one day when everybody is able to come and then we will do that."

Klopp's men are also well on course to smash the record points tally in the Premier League, set by Manchester City who registered 100 two seasons ago.

Liverpool have already racked up 82 points with 27 still to play for and Klopp does not want to see any easing up towards the end of the campaign.

"It's nice to think about it but we are not champions yet and we know that," he said. "We know we are close but close is not there. There are 27 points left for us and we will try everything to take them all.

"We are still not champions. We have to play football games and we have to win them.

"We don't want to stop winning after two games or whatever it is. I don't see results written in the stars; we have to work really hard."

Klopp's 'passion' restored as English football nears return

The appeal by Russia's anti-doping agency against a four-year doping ban from international sport has been postponed to November, a Court of Arbitration for Sport official told AFP on Tuesday.

Originally scheduled for July, the appeal, which pits RUSADA against the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), will be held between November 2-5.

It will take place behind closed doors at an as yet unconfirmed location, despite WADA's insistence that it be public.

The ban was handed to Russia in December by WADA, who ruled that RUSADA had given it manipulated laboratory data.

In January the head of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, said that the IOC and international federations needed a CAS ruling that "does not leave any room for interpretation".

Should WADA's ruling be confirmed, Russia will miss out on the postponed Tokyo Olympics, the 2022 winter Games in Beijing and that year's World Cup in Qatar.

The sanctions wouldn't stop Russian athletes from taking part in competitions, but they would have to compete under a neutral flag and with no national anthem.

The Premier League's return is just two weeks away but there are plenty of details for the 20 clubs in the English top-flight to work out before competitive action resumes on June 17.

AFP Sport looks at what is on the agenda at the latest in a series of meetings between the clubs on Thursday.

<h2>What happens if season is stopped again?</h2>

There have been squabbles over how final league standings should be decided if the season cannot be completed but clubs need a contingency arrangement if a spike in coronavirus cases wrecks their plans.

Most of the teams in the bottom half of the table are reportedly pushing for relegation to be scrapped if the season is not completed on the field.

That still seems highly unlikely, with the English Football Association and English Football League both insisting on promotion and relegation throughout the pyramid.

A points-per-game formula is the most likely option and is part of the reason why the restart will begin with two matches on June 17, to ensure every side has played the same number of games.

<h2>Fixture list</h2>

Once the two outstanding games -- Manchester City v Arsenal and Aston Villa v Sheffield United -- have been played, all 20 sides will have nine games remaining.

No dates for other matches have yet been released, but fixtures are expected to continue from where they left off in March and be crammed into just five weeks ahead of the FA Cup final on August 1.

<h2>Substitutes and squad sizes</h2>

A long lay-off, little time together in contact training and a gruelling schedule mean players' bodies will be pushed to the limits.

In an attempt to minimise injuries and fatigue, world governing body FIFA has allowed leagues to temporarily change their rules to allow five substitutes.

Chelsea have also reportedly proposed increasing the number of substitutes available from seven to nine.

However, critics have suggested those changes will simply play into the hands of the bigger clubs with deeper squads.

<h2>Neutral venues</h2>

Premier League clubs appear to have won their battle to have games played in their own grounds rather than on neutral sites.

However, the UK's national lead for football policing confirmed last week that a "small number" of fixtures will take place at neutral venues.

That is likely to include any match that could see Liverpool crowned champions for the first time in 30 years, to try and avoid crowds gathering at Anfield.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is unconcerned by playing at neutral venues, with results from four rounds of Germany's Bundesliga showing no advantage for home sides in a closed-doors environment.

"We will not have the help from the crowd but no team will have that, so where is the advantage?" Klopp told the BBC.

"Whoever we play it is the same situation, which is why I'm not too worried about it."

<h2>VAR</h2>

The use of VAR could also be dispensed with for the rest of the season should the clubs wish to further cut the number of people required for games to go ahead.

However, the Premier League's CEO Richard Masters is keen for it to remain.

"VAR has its own social-distancing issues, but we think there is a way of completing the season with VAR," Masters told Sky Sports.

What next for Premier League's 'Project Restart'

Odion Ighalo said on Tuesday he was living the dream after his loan move to Manchester United was extended despite the coronavirus pandemic.

The Nigeria international, a lifelong United fan, joined the club on loan from Shanghai Shenhua in January due to the COVID-19 situation then prevailing in China.

But the virus then spread to Europe and brought the Premier League season to a halt in mid-March.

It looked then as if the 30-year-old's career with United might amount to just eight games given his original deal was due to expire on May 31.

But ahead of the Premier League season resuming on June 17, United said Monday they had agreed with Shenhua to extend Ighalo's loan move until January.

"I'm really happy. It's a dream for me to be here. I'm buzzing and ready to go," Ighalo told MUTV.

"The last few days have been difficult as there have been different talks about it but now I'm really happy, so I need to concentrate fully. I'm here until the end of January, so it's good for me."

The most recent of Ighalo's four goals for United came in a Europa League match away to LASK, a fixture played behind closed doors as a result of coronavirus measures in Austria.

Fixtures without spectators will become the norm when the Premier League resumes and Ighalo, recalling his experience, said: "It was strange, you know, but it's OK.

"We know there is nothing we can do now but play behind closed doors and we're happy to do it.

"In the game against LASK, it was strange because you could hear everything when your team-mates shouted. In a normal game, you can't hear, but it was clear and loud.

"It's a bit strange without fans, and difficult, but we have to be safe so we have to do it."

Cricket's world body is investigating three former Sri Lankan players over alleged corruption, officials said Wednesday, in the latest scandal to hit the sport in the country.

Sri Lanka Cricket did not name the targets of the probe by the International Cricket Council Anti-Corruption Unit, but insisted no current national players were involved.

The board was responding to media reports on comments made by Sports Minister Dullas Alahapperuma on Tuesday.&nbsp;

The reports said Alahapperuma had hinted current players were being investigated by the ICC for match-fixing. &nbsp;

"What the honourable minister actually mentioned was about an investigation launched by the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit against three former Sri Lanka players and not the current national players," the board said in a statement.

The ICC said it would not comment on any active investigation.

Sri Lanka introduced tough penalties for match-fixing and tightened sports betting restrictions in November in a bid to stamp out graft that has tainted the country's cricket team.

Allegations of corruption included claims of match-fixing ahead of a 2018 Test against England.

Betting on sports events in Sri Lanka was already illegal, but the new rules ban Sri Lankans from gambling on overseas contests. They face up to 10 years in jail and fines of up to $555,000 for match-fixing.

The new law also bans people with family links to gambling businesses from sitting on cricket's governing body.

The provision was in part to target the former Sri Lanka Cricket president, Thilanga Sumathipala, who was an executive committee member even though his family owns a gambling business.

Sumathipala, a businessman and politician, has repeatedly denied involvement in the gambling side of the family business.&nbsp;

A former sports minister, Harin Fernando, had said cricket in Sri Lanka was riddled with graft "from top to bottom", and that the ICC considered Sri Lanka one of the world's most corrupt nations.

Former Sri Lankan fast bowler Dilhara Lokuhettige was suspended in 2018 for corruption linked to a limited-over league.

He was the third Sri Lankan charged under the ICC anti-corruption code, following action against former captain and ex-chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya, and former paceman Nuwan Zoysa.

Jayasuriya was found guilty of failing to cooperate with a match-fixing probe and was banned for two years. Zoysa was suspended for match-fixing.

Sri Lanka Cricket says 3 former players in ICC graft probe

Kolkata Knight Riders CEO Venky Mysore on Wednesday said that getting players ready after a long lockdown will be one of the biggest challenges his support staff will face.

The Indian Premier league, which was scheduled to start on March 29, stands indefinitely postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The BCCI is looking at the September-October window for hosting the cash-rich tournament.

"These are unusual times. One of the challenges which was identified by support staff during these unusual times is how to get players ready as they have gone completely cold," Mysore said in a webinar organised by FICCI.

Countries all across the world started going into lockdown mid-March to stem the growth of the cornavirus outbreak.

All sporting action including international and domestic cricket was either called-off or postponed, leaving the players to rely on home workouts to keep themselves fit.

"The support staff and back staff are all ready. A lot of discussions have happened from a support staff point, from a team stand point, on what we have to do," Mysore said.

"So a lot of one on one conversations are happening to get the players ready despite some of the limitations like not even having access to a gym. There is a lot of enthusiasm. We'll all be tested but I think is cautiously optimistic."

Even when sport resumes, matches will be held inside empty stadiums with no fans. Asked about players playing behind closed doors, Mysore said the stakeholders have an interesting opportunity in hand.

"This is a huge opportunity. The barriers that a stadium used to offer in terms of capacity to now when we can open it up to the universe.

"Now fans can have virtual presence, now we have to think in a different paradigm. Crowd noise can be real with the virtual presence of fans there. We have an interesting opportunity in hand," he added.

The brutal killing of a pregnant wild elephant in Kerala has led to widespread outrage all over India. The pregnant elephant was offered a pineapple filled with powerful firecrackers that burst inside her mount when she chomped on it. Hours later, in pain and shock, the elephant breathed her last, along with her baby inside her, in Velliyar River under Mannarkkad forest division on May 27.

While the internet has been condemning the barbaric act, popular personalities have been calling for strict action against the perpetrator. Indian skipper Virat Kohli took to social media platform Twitter to post about the saddening incident as he wrote: “Appalled to hear about what happened in Kerala. Let's treat our animals with love and bring an end to these cowardly acts.” Kohli's wife and Bollywood superstar Anushka Sharma also expressed her anger and sadness after the incident.&nbsp;

“Her jaw was broken and she was unable to eat after she chewed the pineapple and it exploded in her mouth. It is certain that she was offered the pineapple filled with crackers to eliminate her,” Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) and Chief Wildlife Warden Surendrakumar told PTI.

Meanwhile, the police have launched a probe in a bid to catch the perpetrators while filing an FIR against the unknown persons.&nbsp;

The information of the pregnant elephant’s death came to light after Mohan Krishnan, a forest officer, wrote an emotional post on his Facebook page, narrating her death in the Velliyar River.

“When we saw her she was standing in the river, with her head dipped in the water. She had a sixth sense that she was going to die. She took the Jalasamadhi in the river in a standing position,” Mr. Krishnan, who was deputed to bring the elephant back to the shore, wrote.

The pregnant elephant was offered a pineapple filled with powerful firecrackers that burst inside her mount when she chomped on it. Hours later, in pain and shock, the elephant breathed her last, along with her baby inside her, in Velliyar River under Mannarkkad forest division on May 27. While the internet has been condemning the barbaric act, popular personalities have been calling for strict action against the perpetrator. Indian skipper Virat Kohli took to social media platform Twitter to post about the saddening incident as he wrote: “Appalled to hear about what happened in Kerala. Let's treat our animals with love and bring an end to these cowardly acts.” Kohli's wife and Bollywood superstar Anushka Sharma also expressed her anger and sadness after the incident. Former Pakistan star Waqar Younis has called on Shahid Afridi and Gautam Gambhir to end their social media war, and for India and Pakistan to resume playing cricket.

After being fierce on-field rivals, Pakistan's Afridi and former Indian opener Gambhir have become involved in heated social media exchanges over the troubled Kashmir region, which is claimed by both countries.

Gambhir is now a lawmaker in the Indian parliament, while Afridi has his own foundation and is a vocal activist.

Waqar advised the pair to "calm down" in an online chat show.

"The banter between Gautam Gambhir and Shahid Afridi has been going on for a while now. I think they both got to be smart, sensible, and calm down," said Waqar.

"It has been going on for way too long. My advice to them is to maybe catch up somewhere around the world and talk it out if you cannot really calm it down."

India and Pakistan have not played a series since 2012-2013 and have hit a new peak in tensions over Kashmir, which they have fought over since their independence in 1947.

India frequently accuses Pakistan of organising militant attacks in the sector of the Himalayan region that it administers.

Waqar, 48, said a cricket series would boost relations between the arch-rival neighbours.

"I think that it would be the biggest hit of the world," said Waqar.

"I think Pakistan (and) India should play, and should play on a regular basis to avoid depriving cricket lovers."

Cricket West Indies (CWI) selection panel on Wednesday named a 14-man Test squad and eleven reserves for their tour of England 2020. The three-match Test series, to be played behind closed doors, is set to commence from July 8, subject to the UK government clearance.&nbsp;

The Windies squad will be tested for COVID-19 this week and is scheduled to fly to the United Kingdom on private charters on June 8.

The West Indies squad will be locked into a “bio-secure” environment where they will live, train and play during the seven weeks of their tour. The reason behind the selection panel naming eleven reserves is to help train the Test squad for the series and back-ups are available in case of any injury.

Three players in Shimron Hetmyer, Darren Bravo and Keemo Paul decline the invitation to be in the squad&nbsp;and travel for the tour due to health fears with Cricket West Indies stating it fully respects their call. COVID-19 continues to leave an impact but good news for everyone associated with the game is it is kicking back to life.&nbsp;

Looking at the squad, Holder continues to be the centre of attraction as the leader with some exciting talents included in the likes of Blackwood and Bonner. Eyelids will closely follow all-rounder Rahkeem Cornwall as well after the youngster made a marking impact in the India Test series. Huge responsibility will be on Chase, Dowrich, Hope and Roach to keep the spine of the team impact. Nonetheless, it promises to be an enthralling contest between the two sides following a prolonged break.

“The new cricketing environment will take some getting used to. However, being in England and working together for four weeks before the first Test will give the squad the opportunity to get acclimatized and hopefully, mentally and technically adjusted to the demands of the new environment. Playing in July could be a blessing as the weather is likely to be warmer which will allow the squad more of an opportunity to play its best cricket."

More than half of the squad were involved in the victorious Test series against England in the Caribbean last year so they will bring that experience, that knowledge and belief with them and marry it to the enthusiasm and vitality of the newcomers. The experience of the players who toured England before in 2017 will also benefit the squad greatly. I expect that the bowling unit will once again provide a serious challenge for England and our batting will have to deliver. La Liga president Javier Tebas said Spanish football's return will allow people to feel a sense of normality again but it may also serve as a reminder of an uncomfortable new reality.&nbsp;

Spain's top division is set to restart on June 11 and to be completed on July 19, yet the expectation is players will be subjected to safety protocol for several months and stadiums will not be full again until next year.&nbsp;

In the short-term at least, its reemergence could offer some comfort. "There is no doubt the resumption of football will contribute to a general sense of relief among certain groups of people, who have been struggling with the pandemic," David Moscoso, a specialist in sports sociology, told AFP.&nbsp;

"The return of football is a sign that society is progressing to the new normal," agreed Tebas earlier this month, adding "it will restore a part of life that people in Spain know and love."&nbsp;

Spain has managed to bring the number of infections under control in recent weeks, with the government reporting no deaths from coronavirus on Monday for the first time since the beginning of March.&nbsp;

But with more than 27,000 confirmed fatalities, the country has been one of the worst-hit in the world and it is no surprise the approach to football's return has been cautious and the attitude of some fearful.&nbsp;

"It is possible that by losing the passion and intensity, which is really the essence of football, it will also lose that emotional centre that is the hook for so many people," said psychologist Adelaida Navaridas.&nbsp;

Many are adamant that, without fans, the campaign should not resume at all.&nbsp;

"We understand we cannot go to the stadium due to the risk of infection," said Joseba Combarro, president of the Eskozia La Brava, the most significant supporters' club at Eibar, whose squad members have expressed reservations about playing too soon.&nbsp;

"But the players share the same risk as the fans, the risk is for everyone. The league should be suspended."&nbsp;

<h2>- 'Social heart' -</h2>

It is not only the atmosphere inside stadiums that will be lost.&nbsp;

"The social heart of football comes from people getting ready for the game with friends, with family, and then staying together afterwards. All that is broken," adds Guillermo Fouce, a professor of psychology at Madrid's Complutense University.&nbsp;

"But between having it back at 100 per cent or nothing at all is something in between that helps us to adapt. I think it's still better to move closer to what was normal before."

La Liga have been eager to point to the economic benefits too, for people's jobs and livelihoods.&nbsp;

"Football's return means the revival of a very relevant economic sector," said Tebas.&nbsp;

"It contributes 1.37 per cent of GDP and generates 185,000 jobs at a time when the economic situation is already the main concern."&nbsp;

"It is the primary service export industry in our country," adds Moscoso. "It's economic role is self-evident."&nbsp;

Television companies like Movistar, the biggest broadcaster of games in Spain, have also been promoting the idea that football's revival amounts to progress.&nbsp;

Every Sunday night this month, Movistar has hosted a programme called "Volver Es Ganar", "To Return is To Win", a slogan that has also been carried by players and clubs alike.&nbsp;

First and foremost, the game is coming back because of its own financial needs, with Tebas admitting clubs stood to lose around 1 billion euros ($1.1 billion) if the season was cancelled.

Fans will have football again but, for a while at least, in a very different way to before.

"Perhaps we have to consider that our new normal is going to be different," Fouce said. "That nothing is going to be exactly the same as before."

England vs West Indies: ECB announces schedule and venues for 3-match Test series

India's table tennis star Manika Batra was on Tuesday recommended for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award by the national federation TTFI.

Manika, who missed out on India's highest sporting honour last year, is the first woman paddler from her country to win a singles gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. She achieved the feat in the 2018 edition in which she won as many four medals including two gold medal.

In the same edition held in Gold Coast, the 24-year-old had led India to its first ever women's team gold at the Commonwealth Games. Five months later, the current world number 63 created more history by winning a mixed doubles bronze alongside Sharath Kamal at the Asian Games in Jakarta.

"We feel she deserves the honour and that is why decided to nominate her for the second time," TTFI secretary general M P Singh told PTI.

In 2019, wrestler Bajrang Punia and para-athlete Deepa Malik got the highest sporting award.

The federation has recommended veteran Madhurika Patkar, Manav Thakkar and Suthirtha Mukherjee for the Arjuna Award. Mukherjee recently broke into the top-100 of the ITTF world rankings.

Coaches Jayanta Pushilal and S Raman have been nominated for the Dronacharya honour.

A panel formed by the Sports Ministry will shortlist the nominations received from various national federations with the awards to be presented on National Sports Day, August 29

Meanwhile, the TTFI has received another 'no' from players after being asked about their availability to join the national camp. Following central government's decision to open sports stadiums and complexes without spectators, the TTFI had sough players' availability twice, first for beginning of June and then for June last week.

Considering the COVID-19 cases continue to rise in India, players are not comfortable travelling anytime before August.
"They have conveyed to us that they are not ready for the camp till August. We respect their decision," Singh added.&nbsp;

World body ITTF has suspended all its activities until July end due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
