Next, it is now up to South Korea’s justice minister, Han Dong-hoon, to make the final call on whether she will be sent to New Zealand.

The woman was arrested in September following a court warrant issued after New Zealand formally arrested her provisional arrest. Following her arrest, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern-led country requested formal extradition of the accused woman from South Korea.

New Zealand police said the South Korean warrant was in connection with two murder charges, and that they requested South Korean authorities keep the woman in jail until she is extradited.

About New Zealand suitcase murders

The bodies of two children were discovered in August after a New Zealand family bought abandoned goods, including two suitcases, from a storage unit in an online auction. Police said the family had nothing to do with the deaths. The children were aged between 5 and 10 years and had been dead for years, according to police.

South Korean police say the woman was born in South Korea and later moved to New Zealand, where she gained citizenship. Immigration records show she returned to South Korea in 2018.

New Zealand 'suitcase murders': Seoul court approves extradition of suspect Korean woman

It is speculated that South Korea could be supplying artillery shells to the United States as Washington's inventory drains amidst the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. The South Korean Defence Ministry has said that it is presently negotiating to supply ammunition to the US.

South Korea maintains stand of not sending lethal arms to Ukraine

More South Koreans have been spurred to take on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) lessons following a deadly Halloween crush in capital Seoul.

A US official has said that Washington is preparing to buy South Korean artillery shells to send to Ukraine. Amid ongoing talks, the officer said that the US wants to send South Korean 155mm artillery shells to Ukraine. Meanwhile, Seoul insisted that its policy against lethal aid for Ukraine remains and that the United States must be the ammunition's end user.

The official further informed that Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) funds will probably be used to purchase the ammunition. However, it was unclear if they would be shipped though the US territory.

South Korea's defence ministry agreed that negotiations are underway, but only under the premise that US would be using the artillery since the country does not provide lethal aid to Ukraine.

Gravitas: History of the Korean Conflict

North Korea on Saturday (October 5) fired four short-range ballistic missiles into the western sea, according to South Korean military. The launch came close on the heels of a six-day military exercise between the US and South Korea.

North Korea has launched a series of missiles this week, including a possible failed intercontinental ballistic missile, drawing condemnation from the United States, South Korea and Japan, and raising speculation it could be preparing to resume nuclear weapons testing for the first time since 2017.

Launches that took place on Saturday took place between 11:31 and 11:59 am (0231-0259 GMT). The missiles flew about 130 km (80 miles), reaching an altitude of about 20 km (10 miles), Seoul said.

The allied exercise 'Vigilant Storm' involved some 240 military aircraft and two US B-1B strategic bombers, as well as four F-16 and four F-35A fighters, according to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff.

This military exercise saw for the first time the strategic B-1B bomber plane being deployed in US-South Korea drills since 2017.

Pyongyang on Friday demanded the United States and South Korea halt "provocative" air exercises. Earlier, South Korea said it scrambled warplanes in response to 180 North Korean military flights near the countries' shared border on Friday.

On Wednesday, North Korea fired a record 23 missiles in a day, with one landing off the coast of South Korea for the first time, after Pyongyang threatened to take powerful measures unless Washington halts allied air exercises with South Korea.

Also Read | Amid North Korea's threats, US deploys strategic bomber to join air drills with South Korea On Wednesday, North Korea fired a record 23 missiles in a day, with one landing off the coast of South Korea for the first time, after Pyongyang threatened to take powerful measures unless Washington halts allied air exercises with South Korea. North Korea fires missiles as US-South Korea military exercise concludes

North Korea is furious over its neighbor and its ally, the US and is letting its fury be known by taking a very aggressive stance. On Friday, Seoul scrambled its jets after spotting 180 North Korean war planes in the skies near its border.

US: North Korea making mockery of UNSC, escalating missile launches

A US B-1B strategic bomber will participate in the ongoing joint air drills with South Korea on Saturday, a defence ministry official in Seoul told AFP, a show of force after a blitz of missile launches by North Korea.

Pyongyang's flurry of launches on Wednesday and Thursday included an intercontinental ballistic missile and one that landed near South Korea's territorial waters for the first time since the end of the Korean War in 1953.

The United States and South Korea have warned that the series of launches could culminate in a nuclear test by North Korea, and extended their largest-ever air force drills to Saturday in response.

A South Korean defence ministry official told AFP that a US Air Force B-1B strategic bomber would participate on the last day of the exercises, dubbed Vigilant Storm, which were originally scheduled from Monday to Friday this week.

"B-1B is scheduled to participate in the afternoon training," the official said, without providing further details.

The show of force came a day after South Korea scrambled fighter jets in response to what it said was the mobilisation of 180 North Korean warplanes.

Pyongyang has ramped up its missile launches in protest over the US-South Korea air drills. Such exercises have long infuriated North Korea, which sees them as rehearsals for an invasion.

Pyongyang had called Vigilant Storm "an aggressive and provocative military drill targeting" North Korea, and said the United States and South Korea would "pay the most horrible price in history" if they continued.

North Korea is particularly sensitive about these drills, experts say, as its air force is one of the weakest links in its military, lacking high-tech jets and properly trained pilots.

Pyongyang has been particularly angered in the past by the deployment of US strategic weapons such as B-1Bs and aircraft carrier strike groups, which have been deployed to and near the Korean peninsula in times of high tension.

While the B-1B no longer carries nuclear weapons, it is described by the US Air Force as "the backbone of America's long-range bomber force" that can strike anywhere in the world.

The United States on Friday assailed China and Russia at the UN Security Council for having "enabled" North Korea.

US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield dismissed criticism of the drills with South Korea as North Korean "propaganda" and said they posed no threat to other countries.

South Koreans woke up to loud air raid sirens, after North Korea fires missiles

North Korea fired at least 10 missiles of various types that landed near the disputed maritime border and close to South Korean waters for the first time, Seoul’s military said on Wednesday.

In response, South Korea's military fired three air-to-ground missiles into the same area of the maritime border, reports AFP news agency.

Of those, three missiles were short-range ballistic missiles that were fired from the North Korean coastal area of Wonsan into the sea.

Another missile landed 26 kilometres south of the Northern Limit Line (NLL), a disputed inter-Korean maritime border. One of the missiles landed 57 kilometres from the South Korean city of Sokcho, on the east coast, while the other one landed 167 kilometres north-west of Ulleung, the JCS said.
