The tragic Halloween incident in South Korea left a scar on the lives of family members, who lost their loved ones. Now, a motion has been passed by South Korea’s National Assembly demanding the dismissal of Interior Minister Lee Sang-min. The government's response to the Itaewon crush has been criticised as 158 people were killed in the pre-Halloween crowd crush.

On Sunday, the Democratic Party (DP)-controlled parliament passed a no-confidence motion against the interior minister, blaming him for the negligence that led to the fatal incident on October 29.

The Yonhap News reported that the main opposition party used its parliamentary majority to pass the motion, which received support from 182 of the 183 lawmakers who voted, with one vote declared invalid. The report added that the ruling party, which opposed the dismissal motion, boycotted the vote.

Last month, Lee issued an apology for the horrific incident, stating that the nation has unlimited responsibility for the safety of its people. Apart from the interior minister, some government officials have come under fire for the Halloween night massacre in Seoul.

Although, President Yoon Suk Yeol might reject the motion, despite the fact that it was passed.

"Minister Lee hastily tried to minimize the nature and significance of the tragedy by referring to the [Itaewon] disaster as an 'accident' and victims as 'the dead,' and also focused on shirking his ministerial duties by making the excuse that there is no official response outlined in administrative manuals for a [mass gathering] event without an organizer," the motion said.

The demonstrating truckers in South Korea voted on Friday to end their strike as it entered its third week with weakening public support and the consistent refusal of the government to budge, claiming that the economy has suffered "astronomical" damage due to the protests.

Preparations were done by many businesses to endure the strike and suffer short-term pain when it began on November 24. However, after the pressure increased from the government side and "start work" orders were issued, more than 25,000 striking truckers returned to work this week.

The workers felt that their bid to make a government scheme over the minimum freight rates permanent was failing. The Cargo Truckers Solidarity Union on Friday said that votes of 62% of members were in favour of calling off the strike, however, the union won't give up its campaign for minimum wage protection.

"The game is over. It is so sad that all we could do is stop our cars, but nothing has changed," said a container truck driver, Kang Myung-gil, who returned to work after a two-week walkout. The drivers said that they are facing not only loss of income but the loss of jobs due to the continuation of the strike.

"The union fell into a trap," Kang stated, referring to the narrative of the government that the strike was indeed devastating for the economy of the country. "Then, we, living day by day, just have to accept the reality and move on," he stated.

After the end of the strike, President Yoon Suk-yeol's press secretary Kim Eun-hye said that government would "unwaveringly abide by laws and principles" on labour issues. She reiterated that the economy has suffered "astronomical damage" because of the strike.

The truckers' eight-day walkout led to the delay of cargo shipments from cars to cement across the fourth largest economy of Asia before it came to an end with the two sides claiming to have won concessions.

However, this time around, the bid of the union to expand the issue of minimum protection to different kinds of cargo like auto carriers, oil tankers and package delivery trucks was rejected by the government, as the latter claimed that the drivers were well paid. The government has agreed to extend the current wage programme for only three years.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of South Korea will probe into the conditions of hundreds of South Korean adoptees living in Europe and the US who claim their origins were fabricated or concealed during the mid- to late-20th century child export frenzy. The strike has also affected South Korean imports to Singapore. Online retail platforms that import golf and tennis apparel from South Korea reported the cancellation of orders by one-third due to delayed shipping.

South Korea suffers huge delays in shipments amid truckers' strike

The South Korean government on Thursday passed laws that scrap the Korean-age system and aligns it with the international standard.

From next year, the Koreans would have to include their birth date to calculate their age, which will make them at least one or two years younger. The international method of calculating age will be implemented from June 2023.

Currently, South Koreans use the Korean age system in which 1 year is added to the baby once it is born. Under this, Koreans are deemed to be a year old when born and a year is added every January 1. They tend to include the 9 months of the baby being in the mother’s womb.

The dual age system is followed to calculate the legal age for drinking alcohol and smoking.

However, since the early 1960s, South Korea has for medical and legal documents also used the international norm of calculating from zero at birth and adding a year on every birthday.

“The revision is aimed at reducing unnecessary socio-economic costs because legal and social disputes, as well as confusion, persist due to the different ways of calculating age," Yoo Sang-bum of the ruling People Power Party told parliament, according to Reuters news agency.

On Thursday, the National Assembly passed a partial amendment bill to the Civil Act and a partial amendment bill to the Basic Administrative Act.

The decision to move the amendments follows a survey conducted by the Ministry of Government Legislation on unifying the age-counting system. In that opinion poll, and 8 out of 10 citizens (81.6 per cent) agreed that the system should be unified.

Moreover, 86.2 per cent of the citizens said they would use the birth date age in their daily lives after the law is enacted.

The national statistics office predicted that the percentage of South Koreans who will be living alone in 2050 will more than double from the year 2000. This represents a shift in household makeup that contributes to the lowest fertility rate in the world. In 2021, there were more single-person households (7.2 million, or one in three) than any other type of multiple-person family. According to Statistics Korea, the ratio, which was 15.5 per cent in 2000, will most likely jump to about 40 per cent by the middle of the century. The statistics show that families are changing as Koreans adjust to social conventions and economic realities in a nation that is quickly developing.

Although it still falls far short of Japan or Germany, South Korea now has a share of single-person homes that is roughly equivalent to that of the United Kingdom.

Almost half of singles stated lack of money and job security as their reasons for not getting married, while 12 per cent of respondents stated they felt burdened by having to raise children. 25 per cent of respondents claimed they haven't found the right match or don't feel the rush to get married. The country's elderly demographics will be further strained by the increase in one-person homes.

Around 200 truckers are staying inside the five tents near Seoul and fighting the narrative of the government that they are well-paid "labour aristocracy” as well as bitter cold.

These drivers claim to be aware of the impact of their strike for minimum wage protection at a time when the world is fighting inflation and say that their demand for stronger minimum pay protections is important for them to save themselves from poverty.

"We are not the enemy. We are loyal to our country, because we are contributing to exports. Our money is stretched to eat and live for a month. Labour aristocracy? That is nonsense,” Kim Young-chan, a container truck driver said.

Thousands of truckers in South Korea have been striking for more than 10 days, as negotiators representing the unions and the government are failing to make any progress on disagreements over rules of minimum pay.

As fuel costs continue to soar, more than 25,000 truckers are appealing to the government to establish a permanent minimum-pay system which is also known as the "Safe Freight Rate".

However, the government has clarified that the minimum pay system would not be expanded beyond three years for truckers. The union demands it to be permanent and wider in its scope.

President prepares to widen back-to-work order

On Sunday, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol directed officials to prepare for widening a back-to-work order, extending beyond the cement industry as the truckers' strike continues.

On Tuesday, the president issued a "start work" order, the first of its kind order to be issued in the history of the country, asking the 2,500 protesting drivers to either return to the cement industry or face penalties.

In a statement, spokesperson Lee Jae-myoung said, “On Sunday Yoon called on government ministers to make preparations to issue a return-to-work order on such sectors as oil refining and steelmaking, where additional damage is expected.”

President Yoon said that those who are violating laws while participating in the strike and appealing to ministers to work towards minimising the damage by employing alternative military personnel, drivers and military equipment should be punished.

Union plans a general strike on Tuesday

Meanwhile, a general strike is being planned by the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, which is an umbrella group, on Tuesday.

"I cannot but regard this planned strike as a politically motivated action, rather than one aimed at representing the workers' rights," said President Yoon, as quoted by Lee, referring to a harsh reaction from the government.

"Holding the people's living and national economy hostage at this time of economic difficulty makes the survival of weak, unorganised workers harder and deprives future generations and the general public of their future jobs," he added.

The industry ministry stated that the supply chain of South Korea has been disrupted by the strikes and has cost ₩1.6 trillion ($1.2 billion) in the shipments lost in the first seven days of the protest.

South Korea has broken its own record for the world's lowest fertility rate. Official figures released in November put the number of children a South Korean woman will have in her lifetime at just 0.79. As per OECD, for a country to ensure a stable population, the optimum fertility rate per woman must stand at 2.1 children in a lifetime. However, for South Korea, the number stands at not even half of the recommended rate.

This presents challenges for the country, which faces a looming labour shortage to support its pension system and an ageing population.

CNN reports that in September, the nation's President Yoon Suk Yeol admitted that in the last 16 years, more than $200 billion have been spent on efforts to boost the population.

This includes financial aid for new babies: a monthly allowance for parents of children under one-year old that as per the Yoon Administration is set to increase from the current 300,000 won ($230) to 700,000 won ($540) in 2023 and to 1 million Korean won ($770) in 2024.

Even though the nation's government-funded nurseries are aplenty, in recent years, a number of scandals in which CCTV footage of caregivers striking infants has emerged.

Other problems parents like Min-jeong face are traditional gender roles; women are expected to take care of the home along with work, and the husbands who want to pitch in find that business culture doesn't allow for that.

Portugal is going to have a difficult time in this game since South Korea will have to put in a lot of effort to win. There is little doubt that Bento's team is capable of winning, but Portugal has the better team overall, thus we anticipate that they will advance to nine points in the group.

Given the caliber of their opponents, it was always going to be difficult for The Tigers of Asia to advance from this group, but they are still in the running at this point, and the fact that Portugal has already qualified may work in their favour on Friday. Portugal's win or a draw in this game would ensure first place in the group. Cristiano Ronaldo became the first male player to score in five World Cups as Santos' team defeated Ghana 3-2 in their opening World Cup encounter.

Bruno Fernandes scored twice for Portugal in a 2-0 victory over Uruguay on Monday to guarantee their place in the tournament's final 16 round. The squad leads the section going into the last matchday, three points ahead of second-placed Ghana, who are in a strong position to clinch the second qualifying spot.

South Korea predicted lineup: Seung-gyu; Young-gwon, Jin-su, Moon-hwan, Min-jae; In-beom, Woo-young; Woo-yeong, Chang-hoon, Heung-min; Gue-sung

Portugal predicted lineup: Costa; Dias, Guerreiro, Dalot, Pepe; Neves, Palhinha, Bernardo; Fernandes; Ramos, Ronaldo

South Korea on 24 November drew 0-0 with Uruguay to begin their Group H campaign in FIFA World Cup before losing 3-2 to Ghana on Monday in their second game. At Education City Stadium, Paulo Bento's team came from two goals behind to tie the game at 2-2.

Caught on camera: South Korean YouTuber harassed on Mumbai streets, two arrested

At least two Chinese bombers and six Russian fighter jets and bombers entered the Korean air defence zone on Wednesday prompting South Korea to scramble its fighter jets, said Seoul’s military. However, the planes did not violate the airspace, while China and Russia had previously said that they are conducting joint exercises.

“Our military dispatched air force fighter jets ahead of the Chinese and Russian aircraft's entry of the KADIZ (Korea Air Defence Identification Zone) to implement tactical measures in preparation for a potential contingency,” said South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) in a statement.

Around 5:50 am (local time), two Chinese H-6 bombers entered the KADIZ off the coast of the southern and northeast regions of South Korea, said the JCS. Subsequently, two bombers along with Russian TU-95 bombers and SU-35 fighter jets re-entered the air defence zone from the Sea of Japan and left after 18 minutes.

This move also prompted Japan’s Air Self Defence Force to scramble its fighter jets after the two Chinese bombers, accompanied by two Russian drones entered the Sea of Japan from the East China Sea, said Tokyo’s defence ministry, in a press release.

While this did not violate Seoul or Tokyo’s airspace, an air defence zone like the KADIZ requires foreign aircraft to specially identify themselves, however, there are no rules governing this space. Notably, Russia does not recognise Korea’s air defence zone, while Beijing believes that since it is not a territorial airspace every country should be able to move freely.
