Chuu, a member of the South Korean pop band LOONA, has finally broken silence after being dropped by her previous agency BlockBerry Creative. The termination of Chuu from LOONA was revealed earlier on November 25 by BlockBerryCreative, who cited "violent language and misuse of power" toward a staff member as their justification.

The agency on November 28 released a second statement to clarify that their original announcement was not intended to be an exposé and that it was “the rights of Chuu herself and the staff who was harmed to provide the truth or evidence of this.” The 12-member South Korean girl group LOONA started pre-debut activities in 2016 with three sub-units. When the extended play (EP) by South Korean girl group Loona was published in 2018, the whole group made its debut. The band was a participant in the reality TV programme "Queendom 2," which had a musical theme, in 2022.

The following evening on November 28, Chuu spoke out for the first time since being let go from LOONA on her personal Instagram account. Read what she said below.

"Hello, this is Chuu. Thank you so much for your concern and comfort. As I have not received any contact regarding this series of situations or know anything about them, I’m currently grasping the situation, but what I’m sure of is that I haven’t done anything that would be shameful to my fans. In the future, as my position is decided, I will share another statement. Thank you so much for your concern and for trusting in me," as per English translation of her message by Soompi.

On November 28, it was also stated that nine LOONA members—HeeJin, HaSeul, YeoJin, Kim Lip, JinSoul, Choerry, Yves, Go Won, and Olivia Hye—had filed injunctions asking for the validity of their exclusive contracts with BlockBerryCreative to be stopped. The agency however later refuted the claims.

China not only has the responsibility but the capability to influence North Korea's behaviour, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol said, calling on Beijing to dissuade Pyongyang from pursuing banned development of nuclear weapons and missiles.

In a wide-ranging interview with Reuters on Monday, Yoon urged China, North Korea's closest ally, to fulfil its responsibilities as a permanent member of the UN Security Council and said not doing do so would lead to an influx of military assets to the region.

"What is sure is that China has the capability to influence North Korea, and China has the responsibility to engage in the process," Yoon said in his office. It was up to Beijing to decide whether it would exert that influence for peace and stability, he added.

North Korea's actions were leading to increased defence spending in countries around the region, including Japan, and more deployment of American warplanes and ships, Yoon noted.

It was in China's interest to make its "best efforts" to induce North Korea to denuclearise, he said.

Amid a record year for missile tests, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said this week his country intends to have the world's most powerful nuclear force. South Korean and U.S. officials say Pyongyang may be preparing to resume testing nuclear bombs for the first time since 2017.

North Korea's tests overshadowed multiple gatherings this month of international leaders, including the Group of 20 conference in Bali, where Yoon pressed Chinese President Xi Jinping to do more to rein in North Korea's nuclear and missile provocations. Xi urged Seoul to improve relations with Pyongyang.

Ahead of the G20, U.S. President Joe Biden told Xi that Beijing had an obligation to attempt to talk North Korea out of conducting a seventh nuclear test, although he said it was unclear whether China had the ability to do so. Biden's national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, said before the meeting that Biden would warn Xi that North Korea's continued pursuit of weapons development would lead to an enhanced U.S. military presence in the region, something Beijing is not keen to see.

South Korea and the United States have agreed to deploy more U.S. "strategic assets" such as aircraft carriers and long-range bombers to the area, but Yoon said he did not expect changes to the 28,500 American ground forces stationed in South Korea.

When asked what South Korea and its partners would do in the event that North Korea conducts a new test, Yoon vowed a response "not seen in the past", but did not elaborate.

"It would be extremely unwise for North Korea to conduct a seventh nuclear test," he told Reuters.

"We must respond consistently, and in lockstep with each other," Yoon said, blaming a lack of consistency in the international response for the failure of three decades of North Korea policy.

China fought beside the North in the 1950-53 Korean War and has backed it economically and diplomatically ever since but analysts say Beijing may have limited power, and perhaps little desire, to curb Pyongyang. China says it enforces the UNSC sanctions, which it voted for, but has since called for them to be eased and, along with Russia, blocked U.S.-led attempts to impose new sanctions.

OPPOSES CHANGE TO TAIWAN 'STATUS QUO'

Boosting ties and coordination with Washington is the core of Yoon's foreign policy, a focus highlighted by the main item on his desk: a sign saying "The Buck Stops Here", a gift from Biden.

Like his predecessor, Moon Jae-in, Yoon has treaded cautiously amid the rising U.S.-China rivalry. China is South Korea's largest trading partner, as well as a close partner of North Korea.

On rising tensions between China and Taiwan, Yoon said any conflict there should be resolved according to international norms and rules.

Democratic Taiwan, which China claims as its own, has come under increasing military and political pressure from Beijing, which has said it will never renounce the use of force over Taiwan.

"I am firmly opposed to any attempt to change the status quo unilaterally," Yoon said.

When asked about any role in a Taiwan conflict for South Korea or the U.S. troops stationed there, Yoon said the country's forces would "consider the overall security situation" but their most imminent concern would be any North Korean military actions to take advantage of the situation.

"What is important is responding to the imminent threat surrounding us and controlling the possible threat," he said.

REGIONAL COOPERATION

Yoon has also made increasing cooperation with Japan a core goal, despite lingering legal and political disputes dating back to Japan's 1910-1945 occupation of the Korean peninsula.

South Korea, Japan, and the United States have agreed to share real time information for tracking North Korean ballistic missile tests.

As part of its biggest military expansion since World War Two, Japan is expected to procure fresh munitions, including longer-range missiles, spend on cyber defences and create a combined air, sea and land command headquarters that will work more closely with U.S. forces in Japan.

Japan's military ambitions have long been a sensitive issue in neighbouring countries, many of which were invaded before or during World War II.

Yoon's predecessor stopped many of the trilateral exercises and nearly left an intelligence sharing deal with Tokyo as relations soured.

Now Japan faced more and more threats from North Korea’s missile programme, including tests that overfly Japanese islands, Yoon said.

"I believe the Japanese government cannot be asleep at the wheel with the North Korean missile flights over their territory," he said.

South Korea Truckers Strike: President Yoon warns of crackdown on truckers

South Korea's capital, Seoul launched its first self-driving bus route on Friday as part of an experiment that engineers explained aims to make people adjust better to driverless vehicles on the roads. The new vehicle looks nothing like a regular bus. It has rounded edges along with gigantic windows that make it appear more like a toy bus than a technological innovation. As per Jeong Seong-gyun, head of autonomous driving at 42dot, the start-up responsible for self-driving technology, the shape of the bus is intentionally such to make it more people-friendly. This self-driving technology is now owned by auto giant Hyundai.

"This is the future," he told AFP, adding that the bus required "a considerable new type of design".

The bus looks a bit "like Lego" and is made of composite parts to help keep costs down and make it easy to replicate, he said.

The oldest member of K-pop phenomenon BTS will begin his military service on December 13, becoming the first in the band to enlist, local media reported Thursday.

All able-bodied South Korean men under the age of 30 must perform about two years of military service, mainly because the country remains technically at war with nuclear-armed North Korea.

That means the age cut-off is approaching for 29-year-old Jin, senior member of the hugely popular septet.

He will begin his mandatory five-week training at Yeoncheon in Gyeonggi province before being deployed to a "frontline unit", the Yonhap news agency reported, citing military and industry sources.

The singer had previously hinted on social media that he had been assigned to the front line.

Another fan said: "I can't help but think they're sending him to the hardest scariest place as punishment."

South Korea: Yoon eyes arms exports

South Korea's unionised truckers kicked off their second major strike in less than six months on Thursday, vowing to "stop driving to change the world". The strike may disrupt oil supplies at major refineries and transport at major ports and industrial plants. The organising union kicked off 16 rallies across the country on Thursday morning, including at a port in Ulsan that houses Hyundai Motor's main manufacturing plant.

The lead organiser, the Cargo Truckers Solidarity Union (CTSU), claimed that its 25,000 members, about 6 per cent of the country's total truckers, will take part in the strike along with an unspecified number of non-union members.

The noisy rally was underway at the crucial transport hub of Uiwang, about 25 kilometres south of Seoul. The protesters sported the banners and headbands saying, "Unite Fight", as they chanted, "We stop, the world will stop!"

The protesters reportedly split into two groups, half stayed at Uiwang and the other left for Pyeongtaek, about 44 kilometres away, close to the ports catering to the trade with China.

Why are South Korean truckers protesting?

The truckers, citing inflation and rising fuel costs, are demanding a permanent minimum-pay system known as the 'Safe Freight Rate'. This minimum-pay system currently exists in temporary form and is set to expire by the end of December 2022. The government has said it will extend the scheme for three years but rejected other union demands. In June, an eight-day, non-violent strike by truckers delayed cargo shipments across world's 10th-largest economy, costing more than $1.2 billion in lost output and unmet deliveries before it ended with each side claiming it won concessions.

Earlier this week, transport minister Won Hee-ryong said the Safe Freight Rate system had not been proven to improve the safety of truckers but to only raise their incomes, a reason why the government has refused to expand the scope of the scheme.

"The government and the ruling party misled, and openly defended capital saying that truckers' income levels were not low - and that if the Safe Freight Rate system were expanded, prices could rise due to increased logistics costs," Lee said.

The government is deploying alternatives such as military-run container transport vehicles and considering securing more storage space in case cargoes pile up. Some industry officials noted that military vehicles may not be equipped to carry products such as steel or fresh produce.

North Korea fires ballistic missile; Pyongyang warned US of 'fiercer' response

North Korea has fired an “unidentified ballistic missile” towards the eastern sea, the South Korean military said.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff General Kim Seung-kyum said the launch was made Thursday but gave no further details.

"North Korea fires an unidentified ballistic missile into East Sea," General Kim Seung-kyum said, referring to the body of water also known as the Sea of Japan, reports AFP

The launch came hours after North Korea’s foreign minister Choe Son Hue threatened to launch “fiercer” in response to the US-South Korea-Japan summit accord on the North.

On Sunday, US President Joe Biden held talks with his South Korean counterpart Yoon Suk-yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to discuss ways to address the threat posed by the North's "unlawful weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs", the White House said.

The meeting invited a strong response from the North, with its foreign minister saying they were "bringing the situation on the Korean peninsula to an unpredictable phase."

"The US 'bolstered offer of extended deterrence and the daily-increasing military activities of the allied forces around the Korean peninsula are foolish acts," Choe said in a statement carried by state news agency KCNA.

On Tuesday, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol urged his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping to play a “more active, constructive role” in curbing threats from North Korea amid recent escalations when the two leaders met on the sidelines of the ongoing G20 Summit in Indonesia, said a statement released by his office.

This comes after North Korea fired a record number of missiles in a single day. It reportedly fired hundreds of artillery shells into the sea and made veiled nuclear threats earlier this month, while South Korea and the United States were conducting a series of military drills which Pyongyang called an “open provocation and dangerous war drill”.

“President Yoon said he hopes that China would play a more active, constructive role as its neighbour and a member of the UN Security Council.” The remark was made after he noted that North Korea has “recently escalated nuclear and missile threats by launching provocations with an unprecedented frequency.”

In response, Xi reportedly also spoke about China and South Korea’s common interest in the Korean Peninsula and that both nations must safeguard peace. The Chinese president also told Yoon that he hopes Seoul will try to improve its relations with Pyongyang and that he is willing to support South Korea’s bid for a denuclearisation offer if North Korea was to accept it.

Meanwhile, Yoon’s office also said that the South Korean president proposed holding regular high-level talks and discussing issues like the Covid-19 pandemic, the global economy and climate change.

The statement said that Xi had agreed on the need to boost bilateral dialogue and build political trust and said that he would visit South Korea after the Covid-19 situation in China stabilises. The in-person meeting on the sidelines of the G20 between the two leaders lasted nearly 25 minutes and was the first one since December 2019.

On Monday, the Hong Kong government in a strongly worded statement criticised and demanded an investigation after a popular democracy protest song was played instead of the Chinese national anthem at a rugby seven seas tournament game that the city was a part of in South Korea.

In a statement, the city’s government said that it “strongly deplores and opposes the playing of a song closely associated with violent protests and the 'independence' movement”, in place of China's national anthem. It added, “The National Anthem is a symbol of our country. The organiser of the tournament has a duty to ensure that the National Anthem receives the respect it warranted.”

The song “Glory to Hong Kong” is considered an unofficial anthem of the 2019 pro-democracy movement in the city which is now becoming increasingly controversial amid China’s crackdown on the democracy movement.

While authorities did not name the song, the widely circulated footage of Sunday’s match shows that it was played before the Asia Rugby Sevens Series finals between Hong Kong and South Korea in Incheon. A government spokesperson also wrote to the Hong Kong Rugby Union demanding them “to deal with this matter seriously, launch a full and in-depth investigation and submit a detailed report, and convey our strong objection”, to the organisers.

However, the city’s authorities said that Asia Rugby has already apologised to the union for the incident and confirmed that the recording of China’s national anthem submitted by the Hong Kong team’s coach was the correct one and that the incident occurred was a mistake “caused by human error of a junior staff”.

On Monday, the city’s rugby union expressed “extreme dissatisfaction” over the incident and said that the organisers, Asia Rugby, have “expressed their sincere apologies” and assured them that such a mistake will not be repeated.

Son Heung-min has been included in South Korea's 26-man squad for the World Cup finals in Qatar despite suffering a fractured eye socket playing for Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League earlier this month.

Head coach Paulo Bento included Son in his squad after the 30-year-old declared himself fit to feature for the Koreans, who will be making their 10th consecutive appearance at the World Cup finals.

"We are in contact with him, with the Tottenham medical department, but about the exact time, the exact day he can train with the team we don't have that information yet," Bento told reporters after unveiling his squad on Saturday.

"So we need to wait, we need to analyse day-by-day his situation. We have time to decide and the most important is he recovers as well as possible, he feels comfortable and then we will take the final decision."
