The conflict between North Korea and South Korea continues as both countries exchanged warning shots at the disputed maritime border on Monday. The South Korean military fired at a North Korean ship for “crossing the border” prompting a similar response from Korean People’s Army.

According to reports on the local media, a merchant vessel entered South Korean waters after crossing the controversial border known as Northern Limit Line. However, the vessel immediately retreated after warning shots were fired, according to South Korea’s joint chiefs of staff.

Yonhap news agency further reported that North Korea responded to the incident by firing multiple shells at Southern Korean vessels which they claimed had “invaded” the region.

“Coastal defence units on the western front … took an initial countermeasure to powerfully expel the enemy warship by firing 10 shells of multiple rocket launchers toward the territorial waters, where naval enemy movement was detected, at 5:15,” Korean People’s Army said in a statement.

North Korea once again fired artillery shells off its west and east coasts hours after South Korea’s military began its annual field exercises. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said that the firing took place late on Tuesday as 100 shells were fired off the west coast and 150 were filed off the east coast.

South Korea begins military drills as fears loom over North Korean nuclear test

K-pop mega-band BTS will reunite on Saturday to throw a free concert in Busan to support South Korea's bid to host the World Expo, four months after the musicians announced they were taking a break from group activities.

Around 100,000 fans from around the world are expected to be in Busan for the concert, titled "BTS <Yet To Come> in BUSAN", and other related events, according to the city's government.

The global megastars are credited with generating billions for the South Korean economy, and their label enjoyed a surge in profits despite holding fewer concerts during the pandemic.

The concert is taking place after the septet dropped a bombshell announcement in June that they were taking a break as a group to pursue solo projects.

About a month after that announcement, the stars were appointed by the government as the official ambassadors for Busan's bid to host the World Expo in 2030.

The South is among four countries that have submitted a bid to host the event, along with Ukraine, Italy and Saudi Arabia, according to the expo's organising body.

The Bureau International des Expositions is scheduled to vote on the winning host country next year.

Saturday's grand event comes as the prospect of South Korea's mandatory military duty continues to hover over BTS, with its stars ranging in age from 25-year-old Jungkook to Jin, 29, who must sign up by next year or risk jail time.

All South Korean able-bodied young men under the age of 30 must perform around two years of military service, mainly because the country remains technically at war with nuclear-armed North Korea.

Seoul's defence minister in August said BTS may be allowed to continue performing and preparing for international concerts even while they undertake their military duty.

Aside from music, the band has championed global progressive causes, from the Black Lives Matter protests to battling anti-Asian racism in the United States.

North Korea fires short-range ballistic missile; South Korea deploys fighter jets in response

North Korea has test-fired a pair of long-range strategic cruise missiles, with leader Kim Jong Un lauding another successful display of the country’s tactical nuclear strike capability.

Seoul: Military prepared, working closely with the US

North Korea's state media said on Monday that the recent missile tests, including "tactical nuclear" exercises, were in retaliation for United States-led joint military operations in the region.

KCNA reported that the exercises were directed by leader Kim Jong Un over the previous two weeks and were carried out to send a clear message of war deterrent.

The state media also reported that the tests simulated striking military command facilities, main ports, and airports in the South.

South Korea's military said that North Korea fired two ballistic missiles in the early hours of Sunday (local time), a day after the joint Seoul-Washington naval exercise, involving a U.S. aircraft carrier was wrapped up, reported Yonhap. South Korea, US troops launch missiles in response to North Korea tests

South Korea’s military apologised for a failed missile launch amid its joined drill with the United States in response to North Korea. According to reports, the missile launched during the drill malfunctioned and crashed causing alarm among nearby residents who thought they were under attack from North Korea.

The incident took place on Tuesday when the live-fire drill which included South Korea and the US was supposed to show strength among the allies against North Korea which had launched a test missile over Japan, earlier that day.

However, a South Korean short-range Hyumoo-2 ballistic missile crashed to the ground inside the air base in the country’s coastal city of Gangneung and although the missile did not explode it caused quite a scare among the nearby residents who reportedly thought North Korea had launched an attack.

South Korea’s military acknowledged the attack hours later as social media users posted videos of orange flames emerging from a nearby area they described as the Gangneung air force base. “Many frantic residents called the city hall,” an official at the Gangneung City Hall told AFP.

According to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, there were no reported casualties and an investigation is underway to determine what caused the “abnormal flight” of the missile. This incident took place when South Korea and the US fired a volley of missiles into the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan.

This comes after North Korea fired a ballistic missile over Japan for the first time in 5 years. According to reports, North Korea launched an intermediate-range ballistic missile which flew a record distance of 4,600 km and at an altitude of 1,000 km, which also puts the US Pacific territory of Guam in striking distance.

The missile also reportedly landed 3,200 km east of Japan in the Pacific Ocean, which led the Japanese government to issue an alert for the citizens in Hokkaido and Aomori urging them to take cover as the ballistic missile passed high over the two regions.
