In response to North Korea's latest missile launch, South Korea and the United States military fighter wall of missiles into the sea in the early hours of Wednesday.

North Korea Missile Launch: One of the four missiles failed, crashed shortly after launch

South Korea and USA held bombing drills on Tuesday (October 4) in response to missile launch by North Korea over Japan, said South Korea's military. It said that four F-15K fighter jets were mobilised and they dropped a pair of guided bomb on a target that was off its west coast. The US joined in with four F-16 fighter jets.

On Tuesday, North Korea test-fired a ballistic missile farther than ever before. The test sent missiles soaring over Japan. This has happened for the first time in five years.

Officials in Tokyo and Seoul said the North’s ballistic missile flew 4,500 to 4,600 kilometres (2,796 to 2,850 miles) to a maximum altitude of about 1,000 km.

Japan warned its citizens to take cover and suspended some train services when the missile passed over its north before falling into the Pacific Ocean.

It was the latest in an escalating cycle of muscle flexing by the North. A US aircraft carrier made a port call in South Korea for the first time since 2018 on Sept. 23, and North Korea has conducted five launches in the last 10 days.

The period has also seen joint drills by the United States, South Korea and Japan, and a visit to the fortified border between the Koreas by US Vice President Kamala Harris, who accused the North of undermining security.

North Korea accuses the United States and its allies of threatening it with exercises and defence build-ups.

Recent tests had drawn relatively muted responses from Washington, which is focused on the war in Ukraine as well as other domestic and foreign crises.

WION Dispatch: Kamala Harris meets Yoon Suk-yeol amid North Korea threat

South Korea, along with the United States and Japan, conducted their first anti-submarine drills in almost five years on Friday. The drills took place just hours after multiple ballistic tests were carried out by North Korea reportedly in response to the earlier military training by US and South Korean military.

According to the official statement from the South Korean military, the one-day training involving the three nations was aimed at creating defenses against North Korea’s strategy to fire missiles from submarines. In the recent past, North Korea has added bigger submarines to its arsenal.

Besides the bigger and more advanced submarines, North Korea has also been testing specific missiles which are capable of being fired from underwater. United States, South Korea and Japan conduct trilateral anti-submarine drills

The beloved national food of South Korea, kimchi, is produced with fermented cabbage or other vegetables, and factory workers there toil assiduously at a production line producing it.

Despite the commotion, though, South Korea's kimchi producers are having trouble this year because of a shortage of cabbages brought on by climate change, which has caused prices to soar. Additionally hurting business are the less expensive products offered by Chinese rivals who don't have a cabbage scarcity.

One such business, led by Ahn Ik-jin of kimchi manufacturer Cheongone Organic, finds it difficult to get enough cabbages because of the high cost. His factory's storage spaces have almost all been vacated. To maintain production, Ahn has purchased some subpar cabbages. Still, he was forced to increase the price of the kimchi sold to other businesses by two-thirds, to 5,000 won ($3.50) per kilogramme.

Local kimchi production in South Korea has been declining for a while. Over the past 20 years, Chinese imports, which are frequently priced at around a third of locally produced kimchi, have surged to take over 40% of the local market for commercially produced kimchi.

The industry has largely collapsed as a result of recent poor cabbage crops. According to a study by Korea Rating & Data, nearly half of South Korea's 1,000 or so kimchi producers either shut down permanently or temporarily last year or reported no sales.

Korean kimchi producers are hoping that the government's strategy will at the very least stop local suppliers from losing momentum.

"We used to produce 15 tonnes of kimchi a day but now we are only producing 10 tonnes or less," he said. "We need measures for a smooth supply of good quality cabbages."

Such is the sense of crisis surrounding the spicy pickled side dish eaten daily by many Koreans and central to Korean identity. To help ease the situation, the government recently laid out plans to construct two massive cabbage storage facilities by 2025 with an investment of 58 billion won ($40 million).

At 9,900 square metres each, the facilities to be built in the rural counties of Goesan and Haenam will, combined, be equivalent to three soccer pitches in size.

The storage complexes will be able to store 10,000 tonnes of cabbages and pickle 50 tonnes of cabbages daily, said Lim Jeung-guen, deputy director of the agricultural ministry's food industry promotion division, adding that more complexes could be built if the first two work out well.

Kimchi exports from the nation increased 10.7% to $160 million in 2017, riding a wave of interest in Korean culture sparked by things like the boy band BTS and the dystopian Netflix series "Squid Game."

Domestically, meanwhile, there is growing worry that the lack of cabbage would also jeopardise the custom of "Kimjang," or the preparation and sharing of kimchi among families, friends, and communities, which is frequently done in November but is not exclusively so.

Just hours after North Korea tested missiles, US Vice President Kamala Harris and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol denounced North Korea's escalating nuclear rhetoric and weapons tests during meetings on Thursday in Seoul.

Harris met Yoon after landing in the South Korean capital early on Thursday amid simmering tensions in the area over North Korea's missile launches and China's moves in the Taiwan Strait. Kamala Harris visits DMZ after slamming North Korea's nuclear rhetoric and weapons tests

Just days after a nuclear-powered US aircraft carrier arrived at a South Korea port ahead of joint military training, North Korea launched an unidentified ballistic missile into the East Sea on Sunday, according to the South Korean military.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff in Seoul stated early on Sunday that "North Korea fired an unidentified ballistic missile" without providing any other information.

The launch, which is a part of the North's record-breaking barrage of weapons tests this year, came after rumours suggested Pyongyang might be getting ready to launch a ballistic missile from a submarine.

Citing information from Tokyo's defence ministry, the Japanese coast guard also confirmed the possibility of a ballistic missile launch and alerted ships to the situation.

The coast guard advised ships to keep an eye out for any fresh information and to report any alien objects rather than approaching them.

The item looked to have fallen outside of Japan's exclusive economic zone, according to official broadcaster NHK in Japan.

In line with Seoul and Washington's efforts to increase the number of US strategic assets operating in the region, the nuclear-powered USS Ronald Reagan and ships from its strike group berthed in the southern port city of Busan on Friday.

At least seven people were killed after a fire broke out at a mall in South Korea’s Daejeon city on Monday.

According to reports, the blaze started around 7.45 am (local time) in the basement and then quickly spread to the whole area.

More than 110 people, including mall employees and customers at a nearby hotel, were quickly evacuated from the area.

Firefighters were continuing to search for survivors after putting out the blaze, said Go Seung-cheol, an official at the Daejeon Fire Headquarters. He said it wasn’t immediately clear if there were people still missing and that smoke remained in some parts of the building.

The officials believe that the fire may have caused more damage had it started during the mall’s business hours.

A rampant United States set a new all-time women's basketball World Cup scoring record Monday with a 145-69 demolition of South Korea, while Belgium booked their place in the quarter-finals. Eight of the Americans' 12-strong roster hit doubles figures, led by Brionna Jones with 24 points, eight rebounds and one assist in Sydney. A'ja Wilson drilled 20 points and Breanna Stewart 18 as the three-time defending champions ran riot, with Shakira Austin netting a field goal with just seconds left to ensure the record.

It was previously held by Brazil, who crushed Malaysia 143-50 in a group game at the 1990 tournament. "I thought we got off to a bit of a slower start than we wanted, but we had a group that came in that really changed things for us," said USA coach Cheryl Reeve, whose team are gunning for an 11th title overall. "We got more pressure and I think our size, the number of points we got in the paint was 90 or something. So our size was a problem for them and I thought we shared the ball well."

The United States, who had already qualified for the quarter-finals, were on another level both offensively and defensively, passing 30 or more points in all four frames against a Korean team that has struggled without marquee star Park Ji-su. Defeat left the Asian side facing a crunch Group A game on Tuesday against Puerto Rico with a quarter-final slot at stake. "I try to focus on how we played rather than the result of the game. I wanted our players to show their best ability and confidence on the court," said Korean coach Jung Sun-min. "Individually I think we played very hard and very well today."

Point guard Hind Ben Abdelkader poured in 18 points for Belgium as they ended Bosnia and Herzegovina's tournament dreams. Aiming to better their fourth place in 2018, they swept home 85-55 to join the United States in the last eight from Group A. Kyara Linskens and Julie Vanloo both chipped in with 13 points for their third straight win of the 10-day competition after an opening day loss to Reeve's United States.

Defeat ended any hope the Bosnians had in a hugely disappointing debut tournament, where they leaked 364 points over four consecutive defeats with Belgium successfully blunting the threat posed by dangerwoman Jonquel Jones. "We played a very good defence on Jones and as a team we were very focused," said Belgium coach Valery Demory.

The top four teams from each of the two groups progress to the quarter-finals with China also qualifying from Pool A if they beat Puerto Rico later. Serbia kept their hopes alive in a tough Group B, beating Mali 81-68. Canada are already through and face hosts Australia later, who can also qualify if they win. France will join them if they overcome Japan, whose ball movement and relentless defence that defined their run to the Tokyo Olympics final last year have so far been largely absent.

A US aircraft carrier arrived in South Korea on Friday for the first time in about four years, set to join other military vessels in a show of force intended to send a message to North Korea. USS Ronald Reagan and ships from its accompanying strike group docked at a naval base in the southern port city of Busan ahead of joint drills with South Korean forces.

Its arrival marks the most significant deployment yet under a new push to have more U.S. "strategic assets" operate in the area to deter North Korea.

Strike group commander Rear Admiral Michael Donnelly told reporters aboard the ship that the visit was designed to build allied relations and boost interoperability between the navies.

"We are leaving messaging to diplomats," he said, when asked about any signal to North Korea, but added that joint drills would ensure the allies were able to respond to all threats.

"It's an opportunity for us to practice tactics and operations," Donnelly said.

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has pushed for more joint exercises and other displays of military power as a warning to North Korea, which this year conducted a record number of missile tests and appears to be preparing to resume nuclear testing for the first time since 2017.

North Korea has denounced previous U.S. military deployments and joint drills as rehearsals for war and proof of hostile policies by Washington and Seoul. The drills have also sparked protests by peace activists who say they raise regional tensions.

Last week, the United States said the carrier's visit was a "clear demonstration" of its commitment to deploy and exercise strategic assets to deter Pyongyang and enhance regional security.

In announcing the visit, however, the US Navy made no mention of North Korea, referring only to a "regularly scheduled port visit" and emphasising crew members visiting Busan to volunteer at orphanages and explore the K-pop music scene.

Officials declined to provide details of the upcoming joint drills, but said the carrier would be in port for "several days." Just hours after the ship docked, long lines of crewmembers formed as they took COVID-19 tests before being bussed into the city.

One crew member, who asked not to be identified because they were not authorized to speak to the media, said that they were looking forward to a break but that the geopolitical tensions were a constant presence.

"You can't ever really forget what we're all here for," the crew member told Reuters.

The visit is the first to South Korea by an American aircraft carrier since 2018. Many drills were since scaled back or cancelled due to diplomatic efforts with North Korea or because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The carrier visit is useful for political signalling, reassuring Seoul, and training with South Korean forces, but likely does little to further deter North Korea, said Mason Richey, a professor at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul.

"A carrier group visit certainly doesn't do much - in fact, it likely does the opposite - to discourage Pyongyang from developing more nuclear weapons and delivery systems, as well as conventional capabilities," he said.

It nevertheless underscores that under Yoon the allies see tighter military coordination and interoperability as the best way to deal with North Korea, Richey added.

Questions have risen over the role the roughly 28,500 US troops stationed in South Korea might play if conflict erupts over Taiwan.

Donnelly said such questions are for policymakers above him, but said that operating with like-minded allies such as South Korea is a key part of the US Navy's efforts to maintain the regional security and stability that has existed for more than seven decades.

Scientists from Seoul National University and the Korea Institute of Fusion Energy have made a major breakthrough in their pursuit of clean nuclear energy by creating an 'artificial sun' at the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) reactor.

Scientists from Seoul National University and the Korea Institute of Fusion Energy have made a major breakthrough in their pursuit of clean nuclear energy by creating an 'artificial sun' at the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) reactor. Reportedly, the reactor reached temperatures upward of 100 million degree Celsius for 30 seconds. Comparatively, the core of the sun hits temperatures around 15 million degrees. It is pertinent to note that nuclear fusion is considered the holy grail of energy and it is what powers our sun. It merges atomic nuclei to create massive amounts of energy, which is the opposite of the fission process used in atomic weapons and nuclear power plants, which splits them into fragments. × By mimicking the natural reaction of the sun, scientists are hoping that the technology may help humanity harness vast amounts of energy and help battle the energy crisis. “We usually say that fusion energy is a dream energy source – it is almost limitless, with low emission of greenhouse gases and no high-level radioactive waste – [but the latest breakthrough] means fusion is not a dream,” said Yoo Suk-jae, president, Korea Institute of Fusion Energy. Read more: China conducts nuclear fusion experiment for 'artificial sun' Unlike fission, fusion emits no greenhouse gases and carries less risk of accidents or the theft of atomic material. The scientists at KSTAR are not sitting on their laurels and have already put their sights on operating the reactor for five minutes or 300 seconds. “This is not the end of the story, we must move on to 300 seconds – 300 is the minimum time frame to demonstrate steady-state operations, then this plasma can work forever,” However, this is not the first time that an artificial sun has been created in laboratories. As reported by WION, Chinese scientists have been working on developing smaller versions of the nuclear fusion reactor since 2006. Reportedly, last year in December, the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) fusion energy reactor created an artificial sun, reaching temperatures of 70 million degrees Celsius for 1,056 seconds, which is five times hotter than the sun. Prior to that in May, the same reactor ran for 101 seconds at a temperature of 20 million degrees Celsius. South Korean scientists create an 'artificial sun' in pursuit of unlimited clean energy

South Korea's 'Squid Game' is bidding to make Emmys history Monday by becoming the first foreign-language television show to win top honors for best drama.

The Netflix show -- in which misfits and criminals compete for cash in barbaric and deadly versions of schoolyard games -- is aiming to emulate the success of Oscar-winning South Korean movie 'Parasite' with a triumph at TV's top prize gala.

But it faces tough competition from previous winner 'Succession,' the tale of a family vying for control of a media empire -- rife with Shakespearean backstabbing -- that earned the most nominations overall at 25.

"It's pretty hard to go against that HBO juggernaut," said Pete Hammond, awards columnist for Hollywood publication Deadline.

Experts polled by awards prediction site Gold Derby have tipped 'Succession' as the favorite.

"I do think ('Squid Game') is going to win best actor," noted Hammond -- an outcome that would make Lee Jung-jae the category's first winner for a non-English performance.

Other shows contending for the night's top drama prizes include Apple TV+ dystopian workplace series 'Severance,' starring Adam Scott, and the final season of Netflix's much-lauded crime saga 'Ozark.'

Zendaya, who became the youngest-ever best actress winner two years ago for HBO's hard-hitting teen drama 'Euphoria,' is tipped to repeat.

- Keaton 'lock' -

Best comedy series looks like an open goal for season two of Apple TV+'s fish-out-of-water soccer coach 'Ted Lasso.'

In the best actor category, star Jason Sudeikis is up against Bill Hader, whose dark hitman comedy 'Barry' returns from a three-year absence.

Jean Smart is heavily tipped to repeat as best comedy actress for "Hacks," in which she plays an aging Las Vegas diva forced to reinvent her dated stand-up routine.

Offering some fresh blood are the nominees in the limited series section, which honors shows capped at a single season.

Four of the five contenders chronicle real-life scandals.

'Dopesick' looks at the US opioid crisis, 'The Dropout' recounts the Theranos fraud, "Pam and Tommy" recalls an infamous celebrity sex tape and "Inventing Anna" is inspired by a Russian con artist who scammed upper-crust New York.

But the pundits' favorite in a tight race is 'The White Lotus,' a satirical look at hypocrisy and wealth among the guests at a luxury Hawaii hotel.

The show -- which is bending Emmy rules having returned for a second season, albeit with a largely new cast and location -- has a whopping eight acting nominations, including for Jennifer Coolidge.

"I think Michael Keaton has got a lock on actor in a limited series" for 'Dopesick'," said Hammond, while Amanda Seyfried's turn as disgraced Theranos boss Elizabeth Holmes in "The Dropout" is expected to prove popular.

- 'The Slap' -

The ceremony, which will be hosted by "Saturday Night Live" stalwart Kenan Thompson, is the first major Hollywood awards ceremony since this year's extraordinary Oscars.

Back in March, Will Smith stunned viewers by slapping Chris Rock live on stage for cracking a joke about his wife.

Emmy organizers say they don't expect a repeat.

"We have smart security. We have people around that make quick decisions," Television Academy head Frank Scherma told Deadline.

"I can't imagine that lightning will strike twice."
