South Africa is grappling with a deadly gang crisis—especially in Cape Town’s Cape Flats, where more than 100 rival gangs battle for control of the drug trade.

Frequent shootings, stabbings, and civilian deaths — including children — have become a grim reality. Many gangs recruit vulnerable kids as young as 8 to 15 years old.

The violence is fueled by deep-rooted inequality, unemployment, and limited opportunities — leaving families trapped in fear and communities struggling to survive.

In a tragic incident, the multi-millionaire owner of a game reserve in South Africa was gored and trampled to death by a charging elephant. The ghastly incident took place at 8 am on July 22 at Gondwana Private Game Reserve, when Francois Christiaan Conradie was trying to guide a group of elephants away from the tourist lodges. Conradie’s attempts went wrong when a six-tonne bull suddenly turned on him, reportedly gored the CEO with its tusks and trampled him multiple times, leaving nearby rangers powerless to save him despite their best efforts. Conradie, who also owned the Caylix Group sports management company, had a deep passion for elephants and nature, and often ventured out to photograph them, said the staff. He had honours degrees in zoology, animal studies, commerce and marketing, and was an “ambitious entrepreneur and passionate about nature”.

“FC was a great guy to work for, and he loved his elephants, which were his favourite, and he felt he had a trust with them, but you have to never forget they may live in a reserve but are wild. He will be greatly missed by all here,” said a senior source at Gondwana. Gondwana Game Reserve paid tribute to Conradie, describing him as a cherished leader, devoted husband, and father of three. “FC was more than a leader – he was a mentor, a visionary, and a truly remarkable individual,” the reserve stated, and requested privacy and space for the family during this challenging period. It is not yet known whether guests at the Big 5 reserve, home to lions, buffalo, rhinos, leopards, and Africa's southernmost elephant herd, witnessed the violent attack Gondwana Private Game Reserve is a five-star safari near Mossel Bay along the renowned Garden Route, and a popular destination for celebrities and tourists. In March 2023, David Kandela, a 36-year-old married father and staff member, was killed while guiding a herd through the Eco Tent Lodge area. Kandela was gored, dragged into the bush, and dismembered by elephants, including a former circus elephant named Bonnie.Conradie’s death has sparked debate about safety protocols in game reserves, highlighting the risks that come with working around wild animals. Experts suggest that even seasoned professionals like Conradie need to exercise extreme caution when interacting with elephants.

Francois Christiaan Conradie, a nature and animal lover well-known figure in South African eco-tourism, was trying to move the elephants away from a populated area when the deadly encounter occurred. The devastating incident unfolded at the exclusive reserve, known for hosting celebrities.

A shocking scuffle broke out during a four-day Emerging Teams match between Bangladesh and South Africa in Dhaka. Players from both teams were seen grappling each other after a heated moment on the field. The trouble started when 22-year-old Bangladesh batter Ripon Mondol hit a big six straight down the ground to South African fast bowler Tshepo Ntuli. After the shot, the two players shot daggers at each other. As Ripon walked towards his partner, Ntuli suddenly rushed towards him. What followed was a disturbing scene. Ntuli tried to grab Ripon’s helmet and pulled it multiple times. Umpire Kamruzzaman stepped in and tried to control the situation, but the fight kept getting worse. Other South African players also rushed in, and the argument turned into a full brawl in the middle of the pitch.

Mother confessed to neighbour that she had sold her daughter Lourentia Lombaard, Smith's friend and neighbour, told the court that the mother confessed to her about doing "something silly", confiding to her that she had sold her daughter to a healer. This was before the girl disappeared. A few days later, she saw the mother get into a car with Joshlin and another woman, whom she believed was the sangoma. One of Joshlin's teachers told the court that the mother once told her that her daughter was already "on a ship, inside a container, and they were on the way to West Africa". A pastor revealed to the court that he overheard Racquel talking about selling her three children for 20,000 rand, or $1,114. The police arrested a sangoma last year. However, she was released for lack of evidence. In March, police found bloody clothes near the area where Joshlin lived. Western Cape province police commissioner Thembisile Patekile told reporters that their goal is to find the "child alive."

The girl named Joshlin Smith vanished from outside her home in Saldanha Bay, near Cape Town, in February 2024. The mother is said to have sold her daughter to a healer for her “blue eyes” and “fair complexion.”

US President Donald Trump has offered refuge to a group of 59 South Africa's Afrikaners, claiming that they were facing genocide and discrimination in South Africa, a country where they make up some 7 percent of the population but own more than 70 percent of the land.
As they arrived at the Dulles International Airport, US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau welcomed them, saying, "We respect what you have had to deal with these last few years."

Afrikaners are a white ethnic group in South Africa, descended mainly from Western Europeans, and then settled on the southern tip of Africa during the 17th Century.
They include a mix of Dutch (34.8%), German (33.7%) and French (13.2%) settlers and form a "unique cultural group", which identified itself "completely with African soil".

Also known as Boers, Afrikaners actually mean farmer, and the group is closely associated with farming.
They also played a major role in the creation and enforcement of apartheid, the racial segregation regime that lasted until 1994. However, it ended over 30 years ago, and Afrikaners continue to hold a wide area of land as well as wealth.

Here's their story

The concern for Afrikaners intensified after the South African government introduced the Expropriation Act in early 2025 to address long-standing inequalities in land ownership, which was rooted from apartheid-era dispossession.
The act allows the state to acquire land without providing compensation under specific conditions, including when the land is unused, abandoned or held for speculative purposes.
However, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa defended the law, calling it a tool for equitable reform, not blanket confiscation.
He stressed that land redistribution is important to keep a check on past injustices and foster inclusive economic growth. However, the group has condemned it, calling it a direct attack on white South Africans' property rights.

Earlier on Monday, Trump during a news conference, reiterated that white people have been facing systematic violence since the end of apartheid, or white minority rule, in South Africa.
In March, Trump took to Truth Social, stressing that South Africa is being "terrible" to farmers in their country, adding that South African farmers are invited into the US.
However, after the group of 59 Afrikaners arrived in the US, Ramaphosa called them "cowards", adding "they'll be back soon".
"As South Africans, we are resilient. We don't run away from our problems. We must stay here and solve our problems. When you run away you are a coward, and that's a real cowardly act," he said.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa met with Donald Trump at the White House on Wednesday (May 21), calling for a "reset" in relations between the two countries. The meeting followed growing tensions, triggered in part by Trump’s controversial claims about the treatment of white farmers in South Africa.
Trump repeats controversial “genocide” remarks
During their talks, Trump said the US had received “tremendous complaints” about Africa, including South Africa. He repeated allegations that white farmers in the country are facing persecution and even used the term “genocide”.“We have many people that feel they’re being persecuted, and they’re coming to the United States,” Trump said. “Generally, they’re white farmers and they’re fleeing South Africa, and .... it’s a very sad thing to see. Ramaphosa requested the meeting to address the claims directly and try to mend relations, which have reached their lowest point since the end of apartheid in 1994.
Refugee debate surfaces during talks
Trump was also questioned about why some white South Africans were allowed to apply for refugee status in the US, even though the broader refugee programme remains on hold.In response, Trump said, “Don’t say we didn’t take them,” suggesting the US had accepted people who claimed to be fleeing persecution. He again pointed to illegal immigration across the southern border, repeating familiar themes about who is being let into the country.
Trump deflects with southern border rhetoric
When asked why Afrikaners might be treated differently to people from countries like Venezuela, Afghanistan or Haiti, Trump said, “They say there’s a lot of bad things going on in Africa and that’s what we’re going to be discussing today.”He denied that the US is being selective in who it accepts as refugees, and added, “Just look to the southern border.”
Trump claims US brought peace to Congo
During the meeting, Trump also claimed that the US had played a key role in resolving conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo, referencing Rwandan-backed rebel involvement.“I think we have done it, believe it or not,” he said, without giving further detail.
Relations at a critical point
Ramaphosa’s appeal for a “reset” signals Pretoria’s concern over the direction of US-South Africa relations. The controversy surrounding Trump’s comments on white farmers has placed significant strain on diplomatic ties, and the meeting was seen as an attempt to restore communication and cooperation.
