"We need to address the concern that these messages may have lost their novelty, and to an extent, we worry that they may have lost their impact as well," said Canadian Minister of Mental Health and Addictions Carolyn Bennett.

"Adding health warnings on individual tobacco products will help ensure that these essential messages reach people, including the youth who often access cigarettes one at a time in social situations, sidestepping the information printed on a package."

Planning to introduce the change during the second half of 2023, Bennett noted that the current proposal is: "Poison in every puff".

Welcoming the proposal, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada's CEO Doug Roth told public broadcaster CBC that "Canada will now have the strongest health warning regime for cigarettes in the world."

"These are deadly products, and these measures will help to further reduce their appeal to youth and non-smokers, as well as to support current smokers in their efforts to quit."

Meanwhile, Rob Cunningham, a senior policy analyst at the Canadian Cancer Society said, "This is going to set a world precedent. It's a warning that you simply cannot ignore. It's going to reach every smoker, with every puff."

According to Statistics Canada, over four million Canadians were daily or occasional smokers in 2020.

Notably, almost six million people in England smoke. It is the single biggest cause of preventable illness and death, with around one in four deaths because of smoking, according to the official figures.

A similar plan was introduced by New Zealand as well in 2021.

It also sought guidelines for the closing of dedicated smoking zones at airports, restaurants etc.

This law comes at a time when the country has already been observing a drop in the daily smoking rates. Over time, the rate has dropped from 18 per cent a decade earlier to nearly 11.6 per cent in 2018. However, the daily smoking rates for Māori and Pacifika stayed high at 29 and 18 per cent respectively. Authorities hope that if the smoking rate drops in general, the same will follow for Māori and Pacifika and soon it will be below five per cent.

After pleading guilty to verbally insulting an auxiliary police officer, two ladies, aged 49 and 50, were fined S$3,000 apiece on Wednesday (September 8).

The two ladies are Koh Lee Yen and Chee Kam Fah, according to court documents obtained by Mothership.

She was permitted by the National Environment Agency to take legal action against public health violators.

She saw Koh and Chee smoking outside the designated area and approached them, asking for their personal information so she could summon them.

While she was documenting Koh's details, the duo began verbally abusing her.

"Your salary how much, one thousand just one month I suppose," they said, and "crazy girl, better go back and hug your pillow and cry, your pay not enough for me to buy a pillow..."&nbsp;

To enhance employee health, Japan's largest brokerage company, Nomura, has advised its workers not to smoke during working hours, even if they work from home.

The company released a memo stating that the new policy will take effect in October.

According to Nomura spokesperson Yoshitaka Otsu, the company would not monitor or discipline its employees because the rules will be based on mutual trust.&nbsp;

Nomura said in a separate statement on Wednesday that the steps are being implemented to establish a positive working atmosphere, reduce secondhand smoking, and enhance employee health.&nbsp;

"There needs to be an environment in which everyone is healthy and can live lively in order for employees to fully demonstrate their ability, characters," it said.&nbsp;

According to Nomura's website, the company wants to lower the smoking rate among its employees in Japan to 12% by 2025, down from 20% in March 2020.

Since 2017, the brokerage has offered financial assistance to workers who want to quit, according to Otsu.&nbsp;

According to an estimate released earlier this year by an international team of experts, over 7.69 million people died globally in 2019 from a range of smoking-related ailments, including about 200,000 in Japan.

According to the estimate published in the British medical journal the Lancet, China had the most deaths with 2.42 million, accounting for about 30% of the global total, followed by India with 1.01 million, the United States with 530,000, Russia with 290,000, and Indonesia with 250,000.&nbsp;

"Young people are particularly vulnerable to addiction, and with high rates of cessation remaining elusive worldwide, the tobacco epidemic will continue for years to come unless countries can dramatically reduce the number of new smokers starting each year," Marissa Reitsma, the lead author of the study said.

The experts also noted that while there has been a decline in the spread of this habit in the last three decades, the habit of smoking has increased for men in 20 countries and for women in 12 countries.

China is the worst affected country by this deadly habit as one in three tobacco smokers live in the Asian country. China is closely followed by India, Indonesia, Russia, the US, Bangladesh, Japan, Turkey, Vietnam and the Philippines.

Experts believe it is extremely important on part of governments to come up with ways of keeping the young generation away from the deadly habit, as they are less likely to get addicted to smoking if they do not pick up this habit in their 20s.

"Ensuring that young people remain smoke-free through their mid-20s will result in radical reductions in smoking rates for the next generation," Reitsma explained.

One suggested way is to extend the ban on advertising of tobacco and cigarettes to online media too and also bring a stricter crackdown on similar products such as flavoured cigarettes and e-cigarettes.

"Despite progress in some countries, tobacco industry interference and waning political commitment have resulted in a large and persistent gap between knowledge and action on global tobacco control," said Vin Gupta, co-author of the study. "Bans on advertising, promotion and sponsorship must extend to internet-based media, but only one in four countries have comprehensively banned all forms of direct and indirect advertising."

Public health organisations say tobacco affects low-income communities harder. The number of tobacco retailers is four times higher in such neighbourhoods and the same for the indigenous communities. Data reveals 30 per cent of Maori women smoke every day. Cancer is the leading cause of death in their community.

For these groups, there is an incentive to ban smoking. It has gotten them hooked and emptied their pockets.

However, with this proposal, small shops will be the worst hit as cigarettes are their biggest movers. So, a smoke-free New Zealand would be a poorer New Zealand for them.

Also, it might bring a rise in the black market and with the illegal nicotine trade comes street muscle and gangs which is very much different from the usual spirit of New Zealand.

New Zealand has announced a number of proposals that intend to outlaw smoking for the next generation and making the nation smoke-free by 2025.&nbsp;

These plans include gradually increasing the legal smoking age, which could lead to a complete ban on the cigarettes and tobacco products sale to people born after 2004, reports The Guardian.&nbsp;

Considerations are also being made to greatly reduce the level of nicotine allowed in tobacco products, set a minimum price for tobacco, and restrict places where these products are sold.&nbsp;

"We need a new approach," Associate Health Minister Dr Ayesha Verrall said on Thursday, as she announced the proposals.&nbsp;

A survey was conducted by the National Health Interview Survey, whereby 8,000 participants between the age group of 18-25 were assessed based on the risk indicators carved out by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These included smoking and health conditions. Researchers at the University of California looked at these assessments.

In the smokers category, men are at a higher risk of developing severe symptoms. Women, on the other hand, had a higher risk in the nonsmoker group.

The lead author of the study, Sally Adams, claimed that “smoking is associated with a higher likelihood of COVID-19 progression”, which could translate into severe illness.
