Singapore extends ex-Sri Lankan president Gotabaya Rajapaksa's visa by 14 days

Former Sri Lanka President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the country and took refuge in Singapore with the country experiencing major food and fuel shortages. This is the worst economic crisis in Sri Lankan history since gaining independence in 1948 and it led to a massive public uproar against Rajapaksa and his government. Although Rajapaksa is currently in Singapore, a right group called the International Truth and Justice Project (ITJP) has filed a complaint with the country’s attorney general seeking the arrest and trial of Rajapaksa for his role in the Sri Lankan civil war.

According to a report by Reuters, there is no issues when it comes to jurisdiction as he was accused of breaching the Geneva Conventions when Sri Lanka was going through a civil war in 2009.

“The criminal complaint that has been filed is (based on) verifiable information on both the crimes that have been committed, but also on evidence really linking the individual in question, who is now in Singapore,” Alexandra Lily Kather, one of the lawyers for ITJP, told Reuters from Berlin.

With an aim to bring the cryptocurrency companies on par with the country's rules and regulations, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), the country's central bank is set to take a tough stance. Reportedly, MAS is planning to hold talks with the industry players in September or October to discuss the scope of law. However, the battlelines have already been drawn.

Ravi Menon, Managing Director, MAS, in clear terms told the reporters that few crypto players will be ensnared in the legal net. "So, players who are doing some of these activities but are currently not caught, may well be caught. When we put out the consult, when we say what are the additional areas that we will regulate, it will capture a wider ambit of players," said Ravi.

Singapore-based IGSS ventures signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu Government led by Chief Minister MK Stalin, for setting up a semiconductor park in the Southern Indian state. As per the MoU, the Singaporean firm will invest Rs.25,600crores, over the next five years to establish a high-tech semiconductor park. This project is estimated to provide direct employment to 1,500 persons and indirect employment to 25,000 persons involved in circuit design, vendors selling secondary products, testing semiconductors etc.

According to a statement from the Tamil Nadu Government, IGSS Ventures will launch its semiconductor fab named ‘Project Suria’. The firm has also applied for the Central Government's Rs 76,000-crore production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for semiconductor manufacturing in India. This project is expected to come up at a facility that spans 300acres and the location for the same is being worked out, said State Industries Minister Thangam Thennarasu.

The Minister added that over the last year, the State government has signed MoUs to the tune of Rs 94,975 crore with 132 companies to generate 2.26 lakh jobs.

On Tuesday, Singapore reported its first monkeypox case in a 42-year-old British flight attendant who had flown in and out of the country last week, reported BBC, quoting authorities.

Health officials in Singapore claimed that the man had been in a stable condition after testing positive for the disease on Monday and had been transferred to an isolation ward.

Nearly 13 close contacts of the man have been traced and quarantined, which includes his crew and airline colleagues, according to media reports.

Since May, nearly 2,100 cases have been detected in close to 42 countries.

This marks the first recorded case of monkeypox in all of South-East Asia that is associated with the recent global outbreak of the disease.

In this outbreak, only one death has been recorded so far by the WHO.

Typically, monkeypox occurs in remote parts of central and west African nations; however, there has also been a mysteriously high number of infections outside of Africa this year with no travel associations to the region.

Hours after Singapore recorded its first monkeypox case, South Korean authorities also confirmed their first suspected cases of the disease.

Monkeypox is caused by the monkeypox virus, a member of the same family of viruses as smallpox. The risk of the disease remains low as transmission between humans requires close and direct physical contact with infectious lesions or ulcers.

Singapore is planning to speed up production of lab-grown mosquitos to tackle spread of dengue in the tropical city-state. Cases of dengue have risen sharply this year.

How do lab-grown mosquitoes work?

The lab-grown mosquitoes have a strain of bacteria called Wolbachia.

When mosquitoes carrying this bacterial strain mate with female urban mosquitoes, the resulting eggs do not hatch. Thus the aim of growing these special mosquitoes in the lab is to control population of mosquitoes born naturally to reduce spread of dengue.

What's Singapore planning to do?

Singapore's Minister of Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu said that each week, 5 million Aedes mosquitoes will be manufactured. This number is up from 2 million per week.

The plan has been given name Project Wolbachia. The project will cover 1400 more blocks in July in addition to 1800 already covered.

Grace Fu announced expansion of the project at Asia Dengue Summit in Singapore.

“Dengue and other mosquito-borne viruses are no longer just a problem of the tropics. Unconfined by borders or socioeconomic lines, they will challenge communities around the world,” she said.

In Singapore, there have been 1400 cases of dengue fever this year. Surge in cases has been seen in March. This is earlier than usual dengue season from June to October.

A Spiderman? Indian-origin man fined for flouting Covid rules in Singapore

For Singapore, chicken-rice is a dish that holds a special place. It is known as the national dish of the country, and it is something that people of all economic strata can enjoy. However, the supply of chicken in Singapore is heavily dependent on their neighbour Malaysia and a decision from the Malaysian government can be bad news for them. Malaysian Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has announced that the country will be banning live chicken exports from June in order to tackle a domestic shortage. This can be a huge blow to Singapore, a country that imports around 3.6 million live chickens every month, and it looks like they may have to stop consuming chicken-rice for now.

This has created a lot of uproar among the citizens of Singapore and although the government has assured that they will be looking into other options for chicken imports, the price is expected to go up. According to CNN, while traders pay $3 right now, it can go up to $4-5 in the near future.

The CNN report further stated that this can be a direct result of the supply chain issues created by the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. The rising cost of feed has resulted in the soaring cost of live chicken and hence, the country has decided to keep most of their stocks for their own citizens.

This, in turn, is the cause of the upcoming shortage in Singapore and even if the citizens try to buy bulk amounts of chicken ahead of the ban, it will be difficult for the suppliers to meet the demands.
