Whether it's editorial leadership or role&nbsp;in news coverage, women continue to be severely under-represented in the media industry and taking the brunt of this are women of colour, shows a new report.&nbsp;The report titled 'From Outrage to Opportunity: How to Include the Missing Perspectives of Women of All Colors in News Leadership and Coverage' says that the media industry is persistently dominated by men and "While women in news have it hard, women of colour have it even harder."

"Women are significantly under-represented in editorial leadership roles and news coverage and their voices remain muted in a global news industry still dominated by men. However, substantive opportunities to reshape the status quo are emerging."

The report authored by Luba Kassova had been commissioned by the Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation and it "examines the harsh realities facing women of all colours in news leadership and coverage" in six countries: India, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, UK, and the USA.

It found that only one in four or 26 per cent of editors-in-chief across the six counties are women. The figure has fallen from the global average more than a decade ago. Additionally, for every woman, there are between two to 12 male editors-in-chief.&nbsp;

The proportion of female editors-in-chief is highest in South Africa and the UK at 37 per cent and lowest in India:&nbsp;11 per cent nationally and 8 per cent regionally). In the US the figure stands at 35 per cent, while for Nigeria, and Kenya, they are 18 per cent, and 19 per cent respectively.

Even in high-profile beats like politics, business, foreign affairs, and health the disparity is still there. In health five out of six nations have achieved gender parity, while in business beat only one in every three senior editors is a woman. For politics beat this figure stands at one in every four.

In the UK, no women of colour occupied the most senior editorial decision-making positions in the key high-profile news beats of politics, foreign affairs, and health.

The lack of representation as per the report means that a lot of important stories are being missed. There's a lack of gender angles and low perceived importance of gender stories.&nbsp; Additionally, the perspective of people of colour and micro (human) stories within big political, economic, or health stories are often missed out. &nbsp;

A dominos effect of this disparity is the declining news consumption of women; the report pegs it at about 11-12 per cent lower than men's.

The author Kassova writes that "organisations and leaders often expect to identify a silver bullet, a quick fix that can&nbsp;solve the problem. The truth is: there is no silver bullet". The report instead suggests a series of changes at various news levels like organizational, leadership, and sector levels that can help deal with the issue.

Gender disparity in news: Women, especially of colour, grossly under-represented in leadership and coverage

A team of Canadian researchers claim to have discovered two new minerals from their analysis of the world's ninth-largest meteorite discovered in Somalia.

They indicate that a potential third new mineral might also be present in the 15-tonne meteorite that landed in east Africa, near the town of El Ali, in the Hiiraan region.

As per The Guardian, the meteorite dubbed "nightfall" by locals, and El Ali by western scientists was unearthed in 2020.&nbsp;

However, locals claim that the extraterrestrial rock has been known to them for ages.

For classification purposes, a 70-gram slice of the iron-based meteorite was sent to the University of Alberta's meteorite collection. There Dr Chris Herd, the curator of the collection noticed "unusual" minerals in the rock.

The newly discovered minerals have been named elaliite, and elkinstantonite. The name 'elaliite' comes from the rock's location of El Ali town, while 'elkinstantonite', pays tribute to Lindy Elkins-Tanton, the principal investigator of Nasa’s upcoming Psyche mission that aims to send a spacecraft to a metal-rich asteroid.

“Lindy has done a lot of work on how the cores of planets form, how these iron-nickel cores form, and the closest analogue we have are iron meteorites. So it made sense to name a mineral after her and recognise her contributions to science,” Herd was quoted as saying by Guardian.

Herd who is a professor in the department of Earth and atmospheric sciences then asked a colleague Andrew Locock, the head of the university’s electron microprobe laboratory, to examine the sample.

It was Locock who determined that the meteorite contains two new minerals. The third potential mineral's confirmation is pending analysis.

"That was phenomenal," says Herd, adding that while in the 1980s similar minerals were created in the laboratory, this is the first time they've been recorded as appearing in nature.

He remarked that this could help ascertain how "nature's laboratory" works and that the minerals could have real-world uses. &nbsp;

The University of Alberta wanted to further examine the extraterrestrial rock, however, as per Herd, there are reports that it has been removed to China, where it may be put on the market. Meteorites have a niche in international markets where they are often brought and sold for very lucrative amounts.

Analysis of meteorite reveals two alien 'never before seen on Earth' minerals

Chinese researchers have discovered that having better developed frontal lobes keeps certain people's minds sharp as they age and may have evolved naturally over the course of human development. Their study focused on the differences between the brains of older adults with outstanding cognitive function and those with modest cognitive impairment (MCI).

The study, which was released on November 11 in the peer-reviewed Chinese journal Science Bulletin, found that people with mild cognitive impairment showed structural deterioration in one area of the brain, the temporal region, while those with successful cognitive ageing (SCA) had a better preserved brain structure in the frontal region, as reported by the South China Morning Post.&nbsp;

Processing auditory data and maintaining memory are two of the key functions of the temporal lobes. The researchers found a connection between structural anomalies in the area and pathological cognitive ageing and its accompanying disorders, such dementia.

The study included three groups of older adults, aged between 70 and 88: 66 cognitively healthy controls, 68 patients with mild cognitive impairment, and 64 people who successfully age cognitively.

The different forms of brain tissue were evaluated, and the characteristics of the three groups' grey matter volume, grey matter networks, and white matter networks were compared.

The main purpose of grey matter, which is made up mostly of neuronal cell bodies, is to process information in the brain. Axons that make up the majority of white matter are used to conduct and deliver nerve impulses to different parts of the brain and spinal cord.

NASA on Saturday (Nov 26), posted a beautiful picture of Pluto's real colours from its New Horizons mission on Instagram.&nbsp;

The space agency captioned the picture as "Small planetary body Saturday." The caption further read that the picture was captured at a distance of 22,025 miles (35,445 km) from Pluto, which also reveals the planet's enormous glacier formed of nitrogen and methane, known as "heart."

A concerning outbreak of 61 meningitis cases in the state of Durango this month was associated with anaesthetic procedures carried out at local clinics, according to Mexico's Public Health Department.&nbsp;The meningitis outbreak has resulted in at least 12 deaths with another 12&nbsp;in severe condition.

“This disease was not passed from person to person,” the department said in a statement. “This is a case where the infection was (spread) directly into the central nervous system through anesthetic procedures.”

The department cited contamination as the cause of the infections but added that it was still too soon to determine if the anaesthetic medication itself or the handling of it were to blame.

“It would be speculating to attribute the cases to the bottles used or stored or applied as anesthetics to patients,” said Assistant Health Secretary Hugo López-Gatell, adding investigations were underway.

Anaesthesia linked to meningitis outbreak in Mexico; health department blames contamination

The Indian Space Agency (ISRO) has been carrying out developmental work towards its maiden Human Spaceflight mission 'Gaganyaan'. On one hand, while the&nbsp;work is progressing towards human-rating the country's largest rocket LVM3, to be able to carry astronauts;&nbsp;efforts are underway to ensure that the astronauts land safely on the water. In order to fulfil the latter objective, ISRO recently conducted a parachute-based test&nbsp;meant to be used for Mission 'Gaganyaan'.

Conducted by ISRO's lead facility, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, the test was carried out in Uttar Pradesh in Northern India, in close coordination with the Indian Air Force, Indian Army and Defence Research Development Organization(DRDO). Known as the Integrated Main Parachute Airdrop Test, or IMAT, the crew module deceleration system was tested at the Babina Field Fire Range (BFFR) in the Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh.

Objects in low Earth orbit travel at speeds over 27,000kmph and this applies to the Gaganyaan crew module carrying Indian astronauts as well. On re-entering the denser parts of the earth's atmosphere, the capsule will be encountering temperatures of several thousand degrees centigrade and will slow down considerably. Even then, the rapidly falling object would have to be further slowed down from hundreds of kilometres per hour to around 10 kilometres per hour, a safe landing speed for splashing down at sea.&nbsp;

It is for this important purpose of slowing down the rapidly falling capsule, that the Parachutes are being tested. According to ISRO, the Gaganyaan Crew Module comprises a total of ten parachutes."In flight, the parachute sequence starts with deployment of 2 Nos. of Apex cover separation parachutes (protection cover for the Crew Module Parachute compartment) followed by 2 Nos. of Drogue parachute deployment to stabilise &amp; bring down the velocity. Upon Drogue parachute release, 3 Nos. of Pilot chute will be used to extract 3 Nos. of Main parachute individually, to reduce the speed of the Crew module to safe levels during its landing. Two of the three main chutes are sufficient to land the astronauts on earth, and the third is redundant" ISRO said.&nbsp;

The recent test was a simulation, wherein the main parachute fails to open and how the landings were carried out under such a scenario. ISRO said,&nbsp;a 5-tonne dummy mass, equivalent to the Crew module mass, was taken to an altitude of 2.5 kilometres and dropped using the Indian Air force’s IL-76 heavy-lift transporter aircraft. Two small pyro-based mortar-deployed pilot parachutes then pulled the main parachutes. The fully inflated Main parachutes reduced the payload speed to a safe landing speed as the entire sequence lasted about 2-3 minutes and the payload mass landed softly on the ground.

The design and development of the parachute-based deceleration system for the crew module is a joint venture between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO).&nbsp;

SpaceX's operational dragon capsule which carries astronauts and cargo to space and returns them back to earth via water landing also uses a similar multi-parachute system to slow down the human-carrying capsule and ensure its safe landing.

The Shiveluch volcano on the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Russian Far East has increased its activity and is now in danger of erupting violently, the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team said on Sunday.

"As growth of the lava dome continues, a strong fumaroles activity, an incandescence of the lava dome, explosions, and hot avalanches accompanies this process,"&nbsp;the observatory said on its website.

"Ash explosions up to 10-15 kilometres (9.32 miles) ... could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft."

It is only a recent development that weed has been made legal in different parts of the world. Habitual users and marijuana connoisseurs have long claimed that the recreational drug is far less harmful than the tobacco products you can obtain easily. However, a new study has revealed that compared to cigarettes, the drug may be tougher on the lungs.

The co-author of the study, Dr Giselle Revah, a cardiothoracic radiologist and assistant professor at the Canada's University of Ottawa, says there isn't much research into marijuana's impact due to the fact that weed wasn't legal until recently.

Revah said that the fact that you can judge if a person is a longtime or heavy cigarette smoker just by looking at their CT scan, made her wonder if marijuana which is commonly the second most smoked substance will show similar results.

However, she was surprised to discover that not much information exists on this.

The study included more than 100 people, including those who smoked weed, cigarettes and even some non-smokers. Of these, 56 marijuana smokers some of which also smoked tobacco, 33 who only smoked tobacco and 57 non-smokers.

It was discovered that of the weed smokers 75 per cent had emphysema, a lung condition that causes shortness of breath, while the figure was less at 67 per cent for tobacco-only smokers and just five per cent for non-smokers.

"The main message is that it may not be as safe as people think it is, and we need more information," said Revah as per US news.

Watch | 'Toro Jubilo': Fiesta or grotesque tradition from the stone ages? She added that this study is "sort of just the opening" and that she wants people "to be aware that it may cause problems." However, she was surprised to discover that not much information exists on this. Also read | Chimpanzees show objects to others, just like humans to simply grab attention: Study The study included more than 100 people, including those who smoked weed, cigarettes and even some non-smokers. Smoking weed is more harmful to your lungs than smoking cigarettes, finds study

A new research has shown that&nbsp;Chimpanzees show each other objects just for the sake of it, akin to humans, to garner attention.&nbsp;

The study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences cites the example of a&nbsp;wild adult chimpanzee named 'Fiona' in the Kibale national park of Uganda.

In a video that has been captured during the study, Fiona can be seen picking a leaf, examining it and later shoving it under her mother Sutherland's nose momentarily, before snatching it back.&nbsp;

“She’s not offering it for food. She doesn’t want her mum to do anything," said Prof Katie Slocombe, a co-author of the study.

"She just wants them to look at it together, and be like ‘Oh, cool, nice!’," added Slocombe.&nbsp;

The behaviour, previously thought to be unique to humans has intrigued scientists who believe that Chimpanzees might be much closer to humans than we had earlier predicted.

Scientists ruled out alternative explanations for the behaviours such as food sharing and&nbsp;playing or initiating grooming. They said if the motive was to share food, Fiona would have relinquished the possession of the lone leaf but in this case, she did not.&nbsp;

The team of researchers have only recorded one instance of such behaviour but they are optimistic that similar examples can be found in future or previously collected footage.

Burning, drifting, and being devoured by insects, Canada’s Boreal forest is shrinking and climate change is to blame.

Second&nbsp;only to the South American Amazon forest, the Boreal forest is vital to ensuring the future of planet Earth, reports AFP.&nbsp;The forest which encircles the arctic and stretches across Canada, Scandinavia, Russia and Alaska has in recent times been weakened by forest fires, the melting of permafrost, an insect infestation, warming temperatures and drifting trees.

As per AFP experts have categorically warned that “the forest is encroaching on the tundra, and the prairies are slowly taking the place of the trees.”

With the rising temperatures “drunken trees” have become a common phenomenon; trees are tilted sideways due to the melting permafrost. Eventually, the soil will completely erode and the fauna will tumble down.

Edmonton-based researcher for the natural resources ministry warns "You have the potential for large shifts," adding that some areas might be flooded and even lose forests, which can eventually turn into bogs or swamps, and lakes.

With it, bacteria are eating away at the biomass collected over thousands of years, generating carbon, and methane emissions which are then contributing to the acceleration of global warming.

Data collected by Global Forest Watch, the World Resources Institute, and the University of Maryland also revealed that extreme heat waves are five times more likely today than 150 years ago.

The higher temperatures have also brought on another problem: insect infestations, which are quickly eating away at the trees.

Fauna, already weakened by the droughts brought on by heatwaves struggle to fend off bugs that exploit the longer summers and warmer winters.

Scientists as per AFP say that for now there’s still hope for the ecosystem's continued resilience, even as they ponder whether the forest’s “tipping point”, a threshold after which emissions will be inevitable and changes to the ecosystem irreversible is approaching.

Global warming slowly devastating Boreal forest a.k.a. Earth's second lung

Indian launch vehicle firm Skyroot Aerospace has announced that their company's first rocket launch would be carried out at 11:30 am on Tuesday, 15 November. The launch of the sub-orbital rocket named 'Vikram-S' will take place from India's spaceport Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. This rocket flight will mark the first-ever launch of a privately designed and built rocket from India. The launch window was announced as 12-16 November and the launch date had to be firmed up based on the weather conditions in India's East Coast, given the prevailing North East Monsoon.&nbsp;

<meta charset="utf-8" />

Named 'Vikram-S', the rocket built by Skyroot is meant to lift three payloads belonging to their customers in a Sub-orbital flight(roughly 80 kms above sea level). Generally, anything lofted above the 'Karman Line' (100 kms above sea level) is considered a foray into space and those below the Karman Line are known as sub-orbital flights for upper-atmospheric experiments.&nbsp;

This launch gains significance because it would offer an opportunity for Skyroot to test its flight hardware and systems, thus helping validate their work so far. the company is working on three orbital-class rockets in the Vikram series. The Vikram series of rockets are named after the Indian Physicist and Astronomer Dr. Vikram A Sarabhai, who founded the Indian Space Programme and laid down the ambitious vision for India to use space technology to benefit the common man.&nbsp;

"We could build and get our 'Vikram-S' rocket mission-ready in such a short time only because of the invaluable support we received from ISRO and IN-SPACe, and the technology talent that we inherently possess. We are proud to announce our pathbreaking mission 'Prarambh'(the beginning) dedicated to the Indian private space sector, which has hugely benefited from the reforms that were guided by the Government of India and its vision" said Pawan Chandana, Co-Founder and CEO, Skyroot Aerospace.&nbsp;

Pawan had told WION that 'Vikram-S' would be a single-stage rocket that is powered by solid fuel. It will be burning a combination of Aluminium and Ammonium Perchlorate, with Hydroxyl-terminated Polybutadiene acting as a binder. This is a tried and tested solid fuel and is also the same fuel that is used in the solid-stages of India's PSLV and GSLV rockets. ISRO (then known as INCOSPAR) began experimenting with small rockets in the early 1960s and marked the beginning of India's Space programme and the launch of a private rocket from India will kick-start a new era for the private space sector in India.

India's space sector has been dominated by the state-run space agency, Indian Space Research Organization(ISRO) and a few industries that make components for ISRO. However, from 2020 onwards the Indian Government began the roll out of Space Sector Reforms. These reforms are meant to enable private firms in building their own rockets, satellites, related ground equipment etc. This was done with the intention of ensuring that more firms in India can capitalise on the booming global space economy, which is estimated around $450bn.&nbsp;

Though India has end-to-end indigenous capability in designing, building and launching rockets, orbiting satellites and using the data for civilian strategic purposes, India is a small player in the global market. While India does launch satellites for foreign nations, India's share remains around 1.6-2% of the $450bn global market. Private sector players with their innovative ideas and competitive pricing are expected to gradually push the share further and create an aerospace ecosystem in India. IN-SPACe, under the Government of India, is meant to develop the Indian Space ecosystem, accelerate the space economy in India and nurture private firms to accomplish their ventures in the space sector.

The nearest black hole to Earth has been found by astronomers, and it is just 1,600 light-years away.&nbsp;Scientists revealed on Friday that this black hole is 10&nbsp;times as large as the Sun and&nbsp;compared to the previous record-holder, it is three times closer.

According to NASA, a black hole is a region in space&nbsp;where gravity is so strong that even light cannot escape. Because the substance is compressed into such a small area, the gravity is extremely intense.&nbsp;People cannot perceive black holes because no light can escape from them. They are undetectable. Specialized space telescopes aid in the discovery of black holes. The unique instruments can see how stars that are very near black holes behave differently from other stars.

The companion star, which circles the black hole at roughly the same distance as Earth orbits the Sun, was used to identify it.

Gaia, a satellite operated by the European Space Agency, was used to discover the black hole first, according to Kareem El-Badry of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

NASA's moon rocket is back on the pad for another launch attempt after further repairs.&nbsp;The 322-foot (98-metre) rocket took off from its hangar at midnight and finished the four-mile (6.4-kilometre) journey on Friday just before daybreak. On 14 November,&nbsp;NASA plans to try a launch, sending an empty crew capsule on a spectacular test voyage around the moon and back before passengers board in a few years. Forecasters are keeping a look out for any potentially disruptive tropical weather.

To put people back on the moon by 2025, NASA has taken its largest move to date. The last time the space agency sent a person to the moon was with Apollo 17 in December 1972, almost 50 years ago.

Since August, fuel leaks have prevented the rocket from taking off. At the end of September, Hurricane Ian forcibly brought the rocket back to the hangar at the Kennedy Space Center. During the period, NASA performed maintenance and changed vital batteries.

NASA's moon rocket is back on the pad for another launch attempt after further repairs. The 322-foot (98-metre) rocket took off from its hangar at midnight and finished the four-mile (6.4-kilometre) journey on Friday just before daybreak. On 14 November, NASA plans to try a launch, sending an empty crew capsule on a spectacular test voyage around the moon and back before passengers board in a few years. Indian Union minister for environment Bhupender&nbsp;Yadav on Wednesday reported that in the northern state of Punjab there has been a 19 per cent rise in the cases of stubble burning, while Haryana has witnessed a significant drop of 30.6 per cent.

Taking to Twitter Yadav lashed out at the Aam Aadmi Party-led state government of Punjab and its Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for not providing ample relief to the farmers, reports IANS.

"As of today, Punjab, a state run by the AAP government, has seen an over 19 per cent rise in farm fires over 2021. Haryana has seen a 30.6 per cent drop. Just today, Punjab saw 3,634 fires. There is no doubt over who has turned Delhi into a gas chamber," he wrote.

A recent trial raised hopes for people suffering from depression with a psychedelic compound found in magic mushrooms that helps in the treatment along with psychotherapy.

Researchers found that&nbsp;nearly a third of patients with severe depression were taken for quick remission following a single 25mg dose of psilocybin and therapy sessions focused on assisting patients in identifying causes along with potential treatments.&nbsp;

The results for three depression tests published in the New England Journal of Medicine said that the depression scale improved right away after the treatment started.&nbsp;

Despite having such positive results, many patients had several side effects, the most frequent of which were headaches, nausea, exhaustion and even vertigo. Few did not respond to the 25 mg dose of psilocybin and showed suicidal behaviours at least a month after taking the medication.&nbsp;

Later this year, a larger phase 3 experiment will begin to examine the effects of two doses of psilocybin.&nbsp;

New research has led to a breakthrough extension of the shelf life of pasta. Scientists have achieved this through a special ingredient and a new form of packaging.

You may be wondering why is this even news. The answer is simple. Even though this may seem like insignificant research it can have noteworthy implications on the significantly problematic issue we call "food wastage".

How is that?

The research has successfully prolonged the shelf life of pasta by 30 days. Earlier its shelf life if stored properly was between 30 to 90 days and now thanks to the addition of "good" bacteria it has been extended to 120 days.&nbsp;

As per the research paper published in the journal Frontiers in Microbiology, this breakthrough can have "potential benefits on the economy and on the environment, spurring innovation in existing production models."

How does the new technology work?

It uses a film that is less permeable to oxygen and with an atmosphere of 40 per cent carbon dioxide to 60 per cent nitrogen as opposed to the conventional packing that uses 20 per cent carbon dioxide to 80 nitrogen.&nbsp;

Additionally, a multi-strain probiotic mixture or bioprotective cultures (BCs) was added to the dough used to make the pasta.

The product when refrigerated at 4ºC outlasted pasta packaged conventionally, which over the 90 days storage period showed growth of visible mould, reports Guardian.

Researchers report that the data obtained hints that the bioprotective cultures (BCs) can also be used in other types of cereal-based products and that this may even have possible implications that viable microorganisms in the food can have potentially positive effects on the gut microbiota of consumers, however, this would have to be explored.

NASA Lunar flashlight: Moon has water in form of water ice. This fact is established. But to sustain long-term human presence on Earth's only satellite, we need to find a way to purify the water to make it drinkable and even use it in fuel. And for this, we need to pinpoint the areas on the Moon that have a considerable concentration of water ice.

Scientists at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) are taking steps in this direction. They are planning to launch a satellite which will use a 'torch' or a 'flashlight' to sense presence of water.

NASA is going to use a 'torch' to find water on Moon

On Christmas Eve 2021, a meteor struck Mars, shaking the planet so intensely that NASA's InSight lander captured the tremblings.

Until NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, a satellite orbiting the red planet, took pictures of the fresh impact crater, scientists had no idea where the earthquake originated. On Thursday, NASA made the discovery public.

"It was immediately clear that this is the biggest new crater we've ever seen," Ingrid Daubar, InSight impact science lead, said in a press briefing. "It's about 500 feet wide or about two city blocks across. And even though meteorites are hitting the planet all the time, this crater is more than 10 times larger than the typical new craters we see forming on Mars."

A striking glow could be seen everywhere around the new crater: boulder-sized pieces of water ice that had been thrown up during the explosion from below the surface. NASA has never discovered water this close to the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/science/ancient-bacteria-shielded-from-harsh-space-radiation-might-be-sleeping-on-martian-surface-528845">Martian equator</a>. Scientists had only before observed water ice grouped close to the poles.

The finding is encouraging for NASA's goal of sending people to Mars in the future.

Their observations from those meteor hits, which were presented in two papers and published on Thursday in the journal Science, may help resolve a long-standing conundrum about the geography of Mars.

A large international study published in BMJ has linked AstraZeneca's nasal Covid vaccine to a 30 per cent higher risk of causing rare blood clot conditions in comparison to that of Pfizer.

Several countries worldwide have already altered the vision of Covid vaccine after it was discovered that in a&nbsp;tiny number of cases, thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS) can be a possible effect due to the use of the adenovirus sector or an "engineered" virus used by AstraZeneca or Johnson &amp; Johnson.&nbsp;

TTS is a condition where life-threatening blood clots are formed with low levels of platelets.&nbsp;

The research analysed over 10 million people across France, Germany, Netherlands and UK.

In its first test, data of nearly 1.3 million people with the first dose of AstraZeneca vaccine was compared to 2.1 million people who took the Pfizer one. After the test, a total of 862 people recorded "thrombocytopenia" within 28 days after taking AstraZeneca vaccine compared to over 500 who took Pfizer's. This clearly showed a 30 per cent high risk of the rare blood condition, AFP reported.

However, there was no&nbsp;additional risk in the case of the second dose in both vaccines.&nbsp;

Since the analysis was observational, it could not determine cause and effect. Further analyses are being carried out.&nbsp;

A microbiologist in the UK said the rare condition of thrombocytopenia was recorded after just 0.04 per cent of vaccines were given in Germany and UK.&nbsp;

The AstraZeneca vaccine was never authorised by the US. It performed poorly in its first trial as the vaccine promoted antibodies in a few participants and the immune responses were also weak in comparison to traditional jabs.

A large international study published in BMJ has linked AstraZeneca's nasal Covid vaccine to a 30 per cent higher risk of causing rare blood clot conditions in comparison to that of Pfizer. Several countries worldwide have already altered the vision of Covid vaccine after it was discovered that in a tiny number of cases, thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS) can be a possible effect due to the use of the adenovirus sector or an "engineered" virus used by AstraZeneca or Johnson & Johnson. New study links AstraZeneca Covid vaccine to 30% higher risk of rare blood clotting condition

The World Health Organization&nbsp;(WHO) has&nbsp;released a list of more than a dozen fungus that are dangerous to the general public's health.

The global health organisation has identified 19 "priority pathogens" that include yeasts and moulds and are evolving and becoming resistant to treatments, as reported by The Daily Mail.&nbsp;

Over 150 million serious infections and over 1.7 million fatalities globally are annually attributed to fungus infections.

However, during the pandemic, the infections—which proliferated in hospitals and can be fatal for patients with compromised immune systems—became increasingly widespread.

The pathogens target individuals with compromised immune systems, such as those who are battling <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/covid-flare-up-at-worlds-largest-iphone-factory-in-china-affects-operations-528785">COVID-19</a>. Steroids are one of the Covid treatments that can make the body's defences against fungus even weaker.

A comparable list of the most deadly bacteria is published by the WHO, which also created a list of dangerous fungus due to a general lack of funding for their research.

According to the WHO, fungus-related infections continue to pose a serious threat to the public's health despite inadequate funding being allocated to their research.

There have historically been gaps in our understanding of diagnostics and effective therapies due to a lack of research on fungal pathogens.

Dr Hanan Balkhy, the WHO's assistant director-general, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) said: 'Emerging from the shadows of the bacterial antimicrobial resistance pandemic, fungal infections are growing, and are ever more resistant to treatments, becoming a public health concern worldwide.'

The health organisation encouraged nations to strengthen their mechanisms for detecting the 19 types of hazardous fungi and taking action.

According to Dr. Haileyesus Getahun, Director of the WHO's AMR Global Coordination Department, "Countries are encouraged to follow a step-by-step approach, starting with strengthening their fungal disease laboratory and surveillance capacities, and ensuring equitable access to existing quality therapeutics and diagnostics, globally."

Fatal fungi: WHO publishes first ever list of fungal infections that are 'becoming a threat to humanity'

Our feline friends cannot be tamed. For they possess a fiercely independent streak that makes them masters of their own will. These furballs with feet wander everywhere casting (judgemental?) glances at you and turn on their 'aww-worthy' charm just when they are hungry. It may seem to many cat owners that their pets just love to ignore them. But a new study says that this may not be true. But like many cat-things, even this has a caveat.

A study has found that cats can not only recognise their master's voice but also can differentiate between speech directed at them and speech directed at other human beings in the household.&nbsp;

So when you call your little munchkin of a fur-ball with a cute tum-tum (in that tone), the cat is actually listening.

The study has been published in the journal Animal Cognition.

In the study,&nbsp;behaviour of 16 cats was studied in experimental conditions. A number of voice recordings were played. Each set of recordings had three parts.

The first part was voice of the owner in a sweet, high-pitched tone. It was found that cats had keen reactions to this. They meowed back, stopped what they were doing and looked at the source of the voice and so on.

The second part was the owner repeating the same words but in a tone he/ she would use when talking normally to another human being. It was found that the cats had less pronounced reaction to this, just as if they knew the owner was not talking to them.

The third part was voice of a stranger repeating the same words. Cats did not have any reaction to this and appeared to ignore it.

This was first experiment to test how cats respond to cat-directed speech and human-directed speech.

So next time you want your cat to pay attention, be nice and call your twiddly-dum in a voice that goes with the 'shweet' words.

Cats can actually recognise your mushy voice directed at them: Study

For all the technological advances we still haven't been able to develop a technique that'll help us predict earthquake with 100 per cent accuracy. Earthquakes&nbsp;therefore cause massive damage and even level entire towns. Rescuing those trapped under the rubble often becomes a challenging task for the rescuers.

A new approach may make the search and rescue effort more efficient and it may save more lives. A Belgian non-profit APOPO is training rats with 'backpacks' to search people trapped under debris.

“Rats are typically quite curious and like to explore – and that is key for search and rescue,” says Donna Kean, a behavioural research scientist and leader of the project. She was quoted by CNN.

Rats also have adventurous spirit and quickly move around even in tight places.

The rats are currently in initial stages of training. Right now, they have to locate a person in an empty room, trigger a beeper attached to the vest they are wearing and return to the starting point.

In order to solidify its position in the worldwide market for commercial satellite launches, India's space agency Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launched 36 satellites using its biggest rocket just after midnight on Sunday. The rocket successfully placed 36 OneWeb satellites into orbits, confirmed ISRO.&nbsp;

NASA has posted images of 'pillars of creation' clicked by James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). These 'pillars' are huge structures of gas and dust that are teeming with stars.

The twinkling of thousands of stars illuminates the telescope's first shot of the gigantic gold, copper and brown columns standing in the midst of the cosmos.

Bright red lava-like spots can be seen at the ends of several pillars.

"These are ejections from stars that are still forming," only a few hundred thousand years old, NASA said in a statement.

These "young stars periodically shoot out supersonic jets that collide with clouds of material, like these thick pillars," added NASA.

These 'pillars of creation' in the Eagle Nebula in Milky Way Galaxy. The nebula is 6,500 light years away from Earth.

The pillars were first captured by Hubble Space Telescope, humanity's original 'eye-in-the-sky'. They were clicked first in 1995 and then again in 2014.

But thanks to Webb's infrared capabilities, the newer telescope -- launched into space less than a year ago -- can peer through the opacity of the pillars, revealing many new stars forming.

"By popular demand, we had to do the Pillars of Creation" with Webb, Klaus Pontoppidan, the science program manager at the Space Telescope Science Institute, said Wednesday on Twitter.

A new study has helped further research on the linkages between a good night's sleep and chronic illnesses. As per the study's findings, middle-aged people who get less than five hours of sleep every night are more susceptible to multimorbidities like heart disease, cancer or diabetes.

The research which was led by UCL researchers has been published in PLOS Medicine and to analyse the impact of sleep duration on health it included more than 7,000 men and women of the ages 50,60 and 70 years.

As per ANI, it found that there is a definite link between how long a participant slept, and their diagnoses of chronic diseases.

Also read |&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/science/hair-straightening-can-lead-to-a-threefold-increase-in-the-risk-of-this-rare-type-of-cancer-526403" hreflang="en">Hair straightening can lead to a threefold increase in the risk of this 'rare' type of cancer</a>

People who reported getting less than five hours of sleep or less at the age of 50, were found to be at a 20 per cent higher risk of being diagnosed with a chronic disease. Compared to those who get more than seven hours of sleep, the risk for those with insufficient sleep doubles to 40 per cent over 25 years.
&nbsp;
"Multimorbidity is on the rise in high-income countries and more than half of older adults now have at least two chronic diseases. This is proving to be a major challenge for public health, as multimorbidity is associated with high healthcare service use, hospitalisations and disability," said the study's lead author, Dr Severine Sabia.

She further adds that while with age our sleeping patterns and habits change naturally, it is still recommended to catch at least seven to eight hours of sleep every night. &nbsp;

To ensure a good night's sleep, experts recommend good sleep hygiene; this includes making sure to sleep in a quiet, dark room that is at a comfortable temperature, not using electronics around bedtime, and avoiding heavy meals before sleeping.

While researchers didn't find any linkages between sleeping for nine hours or more and multimorbidity in healthy people, longer sleep in people with a chronic illness was found to have associations with a 35 per cent increase in developing another illness.

Astronomers using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope have made a unique measurement that indicates a jet, ploughing through space at speeds greater than 99.97% the speed of light, was propelled by the titanic collision between two neutron stars.

Have scientists spotted something faster than the speed of light?

As per a new study women who use chemical hair-straightening tools frequently are at a greater risk of a comparatively rare type of cancer.

The study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, incorporated data from almost 34,000 women in the United States over a period of around 11 years (10.9 to be exact). Participants were aged between 35 to 74 years.

It points to the fact that women who use hair straightening products are at significantly higher risk — almost three times— of Uterine cancer.

A Reuters report quotes the study's lead Alexandra White of the US National Institute of Environmental Health Safety (NIEHS) as saying: "We estimated that 1.64 per cent of women who never used hair straighteners would go on to develop uterine cancer by the age of 70, but for frequent users, that risk goes up to 4.05 per cent."

She added that it is important to put this information into context given that "Uterine cancer is a relatively rare type of cancer."

To reach their conclusion the researchers accounted for other risk factors, however, they found that chances of uterine cancer increased by 2.5 times for women who used chemical straightening products more than four times a year.

The study did not find any racial linkages, but due to the fact that black women are more frequent users of these products and tend to start using them at a younger age, the researchers stress the importance the findings could have for them.

Previous studies as per Reuters have shown that these products contain "endocrine disrupting" chemicals that have been previously associated with higher risks of breast and ovarian cancer.

However, as per the researchers, these findings are only "the first epidemiologic evidence of an association between use of straightening products and uterine cancer" and more research is required to identify the specific chemicals behind the risks.

A Reuters report quotes the study's lead Alexandra White of the US National Institute of Environmental Health Safety (NIEHS) as saying: "We estimated that 1.64 per cent of women who never used hair straighteners would go on to develop uterine cancer by the age of 70, but for frequent users, that risk goes up to 4.05 per cent." She added that it is important to put this information into context given that "Uterine cancer is a relatively rare type of cancer." Hair straightening can lead to a threefold increase in the risk of this 'rare' type of cancer

After Covid lockdown, screen time for an individual has increased, especially for children, as they were attending their classes through phones and laptops.

Recently, experts have cautioned that this increased screen time has caused children as young as six to have excruciating eye conditions, or in simple words, red eyes that generally affect adults.

The eye condition generally affects a person in his or her 50s or 60s. If this is ignored or not treated well, it can cause gritty, itchy, red, sensitive eyes and many more uncomfortable yet painful symptoms. As per experts, some of the tear-producing glands in the eyelids may suffer irreparable damage if the problem is not treated. &nbsp;

When asked about how it actually feels, the majority of people have described it as a sensation that feels like when you slice onions.&nbsp;

According to a specialist Sarah Farrant, an optometrist and dry eye specialist said that now many primary-aged children are visiting her for the eye problem.

She attributed the cause to the increased screen time because it leads to slower blinking.&nbsp;

Sarah, further referring to the situation when she opened her clinic, said that there weren't any children visiting her, but now the situation is different. She said that in the last five or six years, young children have often visited her. The youngest patient she attended was a six-year-old girl.&nbsp;

According to a dry eye expert, Dr. Matthew Olsen, dry eye disease has been considered to have a major effect on the quality of one's life, so it is very important for all age groups to be more aware of the value of taking good care of their eyes, as it is something that cannot be reversed if the damage is done.&nbsp;

Excessive screen time causing dry eye problems in kids, experts warn

Have you ever thought why hearing birds chirp in the mornings seems to be so calming? According to a recent study, listening to bird sounds can aid humans in overcoming tension and anxiety. A group of researchers from Germany assessed the impact of urban traffic noise versus natural bird singing on the participants' cognitive and emotional function.

Another objective was to assess the impact of lower vs. higher soundscape variety by varying the number of various typical traffic noises or different bird species' songs within the respective soundscapes, according to a study published in the Nature portfolio magazine Scientific Reports.

295 participants were randomly chosen&nbsp;for&nbsp;one of four treatments—traffic noise low, traffic noise high, birdsong low, and birdsong high diversity soundscapes—for six minutes in an online experiment conducted by the researchers. Before and after the exposure, the subjects also completed digit-span and dual n-back tasks, as well as surveys for sorrow, anxiety, and paranoia.

A Newsweek report says&nbsp;that as the world rapidly urbanises, so does the environment in which people live. Around 70% of the world's population is projected to live in cities by 2050, with certain regions, like Europe, already exceeding this percentage.

Given that urbanisation has been linked to worse mental health outcomes, understanding how the urban environment affects our wellbeing is crucial. However, traditional psychological research usually undervalues the impact of environmental influences on human wellbeing and cognition.

The Lise Meitner Group for Environmental Neuroscience at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development and the University Medical Center Hamburg-Department Eppendorf of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy are partners with the German researchers, according to Newsweek.
