India already has air defence systems. They are sure to complement LRSAM. 
 
Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) is one such missile system that is used by all three defence services of India. The addition of S-400 will boost India's defence capabilities.

By end of this month, the delivery of the critical system will be completed and thereafter it will be deployed.

The first squadron of the S-400 system arrived in India in December 2021 and has been deployed on the Punjab border to thwart any air strikes from both Pakistan and China.

The S-400 system is capable of tracking, engaging and addressing the threat of Chinese or Pakistani fighters the moment they take off from air bases. The system can track multiple targets at multiple ranges and neutralise them simultaneously.

India decided to upgrade its military infrastructure when the country was locked in a major faceoff with China along the Line of Actual Control in July 2020. The threat of two-front war - from China and Pakistan - made India go for large scale arms deals and Russia is still one of India`s largest arms suppliers.

There were apprehension on delay in delivery of critical weapon system after Russia`s war with Ukraine. However, with delivery of the second squadron of S-400 system, India is hopeful of getting other military capabilities.

The United States has once again voiced some serious concerns over India's purchase of the multi-billion dollar missile defense system from Russia. The United States has said that Russia selling the S-400 missile defense system to India has shined a spotlight on the destabilizing role that Moscow plays in the region.

Russia has delivered to India all the contracted 70,000 AK-203 Kalashnikov assault rifles as envisaged under a contract signed late last summer between India and Kalashnikov.

The entire delivery was made earlier this week. A source explained, "delivery was fast tracked," pointing to the short time gap between the signing of the contract and its fructification.

The Indian Ministry of Defence intends to procure 670,000 AK-203 assault rifles, and the 70,000 delivered are part of that total.

The rest of the 600,000 will be manufactured in India's Amethi under a joint venture, the contract for which was signed on December 6, 2021.

The day saw the first India-Russia 2+2 meeting at the level of foreign and defence ministers, as well as Russian President Putin's visit to the annual summit in Delhi.

The total cost of the contract is around Rs 50 billion.

As part of India's localisation of defence manufacturing, a special purpose joint venture called Indo-Russian Rifles Private Ltd (IRRPL) has been created for the production of 600,000 AK-203 in India. The Joint Venture is between India, represented by the Defence PSUs-Advanced Weapons &amp; Equipment India Limited (AWEIL) &amp; Munitions India Limited (MIL) and Russia, represented by Rosoboronexport (RoE) &amp; Concern Kalashnikov (CK).

The 7.62 x 39mm calibre AK-203 rifles will replace the in-service INSAS rifles that were inducted over three decades ago. The AK-203 assault rifles have an effective range of 800 meters, are light in weight, and are seen as being as easy to use as modern assault rifles.

When asked whether India would be the first country to purchase the Russian-made S-500, Borisov told RBC TV Channel on Monday, “Beyond a doubt, once we deliver this system to our troops, India will be the first on the list, if it expresses its desire to buy these advanced armaments.”

The S-500 ‘Prometei’ anti-aircraft missile system is the most advanced Russian mobile service to air system and was put into service earlier this year. In 2019, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed interest in buying the S-500 units.

The comments from the Russian deputy prime minister comes even as the delivery of its long-range S-400 ground-to-air missile defence system to India has begun.

The $5.5 billion deal for five S-400 systems had become a thorn in the growing US-India partnership, with the latter running the risk of facing the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) sanctions.

Even though the US said it will try to negotiate with India to spurn the deal, New Delhi has been rejecting&nbsp;the jurisdiction of a third country’s domestic law.

Earlier on December 6, during the 21st India-Russia summit, Russian Foreign minister Sergei Lavrov claimed that the US had been planning to undermine the deal and make India “obey the American orders”.

Defence forms the main pillar of the partnership between Russia and India. Brahmos missile, licensed production of SU 30 aircraft, T30 Tanks are some of the examples of this cooperation.&nbsp; The next big focus is the joint production of AK series assault rifles in India.

The S-400 is claimed to have started testing in late 1999 or early 2000, with the first guns going into service in 2007.

India and Russia are likely to sign 10 bilateral agreements during President Vladimir Putin’s visit to New Delhi on Monday evening.

According to reports, these agreements will be in various fields like space, culture, science and technology, and defence, among others.

"About 10 bilateral agreements will be signed, which are quite important and include some semi-confidential ones. Work is still ongoing on them. We are confident that the package of agreements will be signed as part of the visit, " Russian Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov has told news agency ANI.

He, however, declined to name the agreements as they were still being finalized, but added, "They are important for the development of bilateral ties in most diverse areas."

Earlier, Russian envoy Nikolay R Kudashev indicated that India and Russia would achieve "military understandings" during Putin’s visit.

He said that "some new understandings in the spheres like connectivity, space, science and technology, education, arts and culture" will be achieved.

The system is said to be able to simultaneously engage 36 targets and if we compare S-400 to S-300, the upgraded and advanced version has four new different types of missiles from short-range (40km) to very long-range (400km). The command post, which is equipped with LCD consoles that process the air space surveillance data, control and monitor long-range surveillance radar. It tracks airborne threats and also prioritises the threats. The radar can detect and track aircraft, rotorcraft, cruise missiles, guided missiles, drones and ballistic rockets within the distance of 600km reportedly. The system was specifically designed to detect and destroy highly advanced fighter jets such as F-16 and F-22 and missiles such as Tomahawk. To enhance its defence system, India in October 2018, had signed a $5 billion deal with Russia to buy five units of the S-400 air defence missile systems. India had received a warning from the Trump administration that India might face US sanctions if it goes ahead with the contract. "That is absolutely the case with the Indo-Pacific, whose disconnection was a product of a certain period in history," Jaishankar said of the Indo-Pacific.&nbsp;

He added, "We must move beyond such anachronisms for a country like India, which now exports the majority of its goods eastward.

"Today, our interests and reach stretch all the way to the Pacific. Our most important partners are based there, with cooperation with Russia's Far East being one notable example."&nbsp;

From trade to defence, the two countries enjoy a multidimensional connection.

India is actively pursuing a trade pact with Russia's Eurasian Economic Union, and will receive the first S400 units by the end of this year.&nbsp;

Jaishankar, delivering a speech on India-Russia ties in a changing world at the Primakov Institute of World Economy and International Relations, said that this relationship is sometimes taken for granted.

“The case for its constant nurturing” is powerful, he said.

“There’s no doubt that relations between India and Russia have been among the steadiest of the major relationships in the world after the second World War,” he said.

Russians will surely recall the ups and downs in the ties with the US, Europe, China or Japan or Turkey and Iraq, the minister said.

“On their part, objective Indians would also recognise that this was the case with them as well.

“Where India-Russia bilateral ties are concerned, there have been many changes, even issues from time to time. But at the end of the day, the logic of geo-politics was so compelling that we barely remember these even as minor aberrations,” Jaishankar said.

The undeniable reality of the exceptional resilience of India-Russia ties is surely a phenomenon that is worth analysing, he said.

“That itself speaks a lot,” he said.

The visiting Indian minister discussed the upcoming visit of PM Modi to Vladivostok for the eastern economic forum(EEF) next week and the annual India-Russia summit. Military technical cooperation will be one of the focus areas when PM Modi meets Russian President Putin.

"Both of us were satisfied with the state of preparations and we expect good outcomes from Vladivostok," India's external affairs minister added.

"Our attention is on preparations for Prime Minister Modi's upcoming visit to Russia&nbsp;where he will hold talks with President Putin and attend the fifth Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok as a guest of honor. We discussed in detail the agenda of the meeting and agreed that we are moving in the right direction." Sergey Lavrov said.

Both sides covered a number of regional and global issues including the situation in the Middle-East and Afghanistan.

Defence remains one of the main pillars of India-Russia ties. Last year during the annual summit which alternates between the two countries, the S-400 deal was announced.

Earlier, there were issues related to the advance payment of S-400 missile defence system which has been settled between the two countries. The S-400 timetable on delivery of the system to India has been proceeding according to schedule.

Jaishankar briefs Russian foreign minister Lavrov on Kashmir; discusses upcoming visit of PM Modi to Russia

The first shipment of Russian <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/mike-pompeo-expresses-disappointment-over-turkeys-acquisition-of-russian-s-400-missiles-237351">S-400 defence systems</a> to Turkey has been completed and a second shipment is now being planned to arrive in Ankara, Turkish military officials said on Thursday.

On Thursday, the officials said Turkey was still engaged in talks with US officials to procure the Patriot defence system, which Washington had offered as an alternative to the S-400s.

"If the United States portrays an adversarial attitude towards us, we will take retaliatory measures, as we've told them. This is not a threat or a bluff," Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said in an interview with broadcaster TGRT Haber.

"We are not a country that will bow down to those who show a animosity towards Turkey," he said, reiterating a threat of retaliation that Turkey made last month.

Cavusoglu added that he did not expect the US administration to take such action.

"Trump does not want to impose sanctions on Turkey and he frequently says that his administration and the previous U.S. administration is also responsible for Turkey not being able to buy Patriot systems. This is true," Cavusoglu said.

Turkey, like other partners in the F-35 programme, was part of the manufacturing supply chain for the high-tech jet aircraft, producing some 900 parts. A U.S. official said it would cost some $500 million to $600 million to shift F-35 manufacturing from Turkey.

Separately, the TASS news agency cited Sergei Chemezov, head of Russia's Rostec state conglomerate, as saying that Russia and Turkey were in talks about the possibility of jointly manufacturing some components of Russia's S-400 missile defence system in Turkey.
