This move "allows the Kremlin to acquire additional personnel for its war effort in the face of mounting casualties" and "avoid further unpopular domestic mobilization measures in the run-up to the 2024 presidential elections," according to the Ministry.

Russian military official, Stanislav Rzhitsky, the commander of a submarine in the Black Sea, who had been placed on a blacklist of alleged war criminals by a Ukrainian website,&nbsp;was shot dead, early Monday (July 10) by an unknown assassin while he was on his morning run, reported Russian news agency TASS, citing local officials.&nbsp;

<h2>What do we know about the Russian official’s death?</h2>

The 42-year-old military official was shot in the southern city of Krasnodar, said Russia’s top investigative body. A criminal case has been launched after the alleged murder, reported TASS.&nbsp;

According to Russian media reports, Rzhitsky was the&nbsp;deputy head of military mobilisation in the city and also commanded the “Krasnodar” submarine (named after the city) in the Black Sea. Rzhitsky was reportedly shot four times in the back and chest and died on the spot.

The commander of a diesel-electric submarine, a part of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, was also allegedly responsible for launching Kalibr cruise missiles at Ukrainian targets, according to media reports from Ukraine.&nbsp;

&nbsp;Rzhitsky, was also said to have been involved in a submarine-launched missile attack on the Ukrainian city of Vinnytsia in July, last year, which killed 23 civilians, including a four-year-old girl.&nbsp;

<h2>Ukrainian involvement?</h2>

A report by Reuters said that Rzhitsky’s details, including his address were present on the Ukrainian website Myrotvorets (Peacemaker), which is said to be an unofficial database of perceived enemies of Kyiv. On Tuesday, the word “Liquidated,” in red, was superimposed on his photograph on the site.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian interior ministry adviser, Anton Gerashchenko, took to Twitter and wrote about how the Russian police and the country’s media are blaming the “carefully planned” alleged murder on the “order from Ukraine”.&nbsp;

He added, “So far, Russian police cannot find a single surveillance camera that would show the crime being committed. The search continues.” However, the Ukrainian official did not covertly indicate if the allegations are justified or not.&nbsp;

<h2>Did Putin fire the top Russian general?</h2>

Top Russian general, Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov was shown in a video released by the defence ministry, on Monday, in his first public appearance since the aborted Wagner mutiny last month.&nbsp;

He was also described as the general staff of the Russian armed forces and commander of Moscow’s forces in Ukraine,&nbsp;positions he held prior to the Wagner mutiny.

The recent footage and first public appearances indicate that Russian President Vladimir Putin has retained his two most powerful military men Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Gerasimov.&nbsp;

Russian military bloggers, for weeks, have claimed that the top Russian general had been dismissed and replaced by Putin after Wagner’s June 24 mutiny. However, both the first recent public appearances suggest that the Russian president ignored Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin’s demand for their dismissal.

On the other hand, Russian military bloggers, as per the Moscow Times claim that Gerasimov has been replaced with Colonel General Mikhail Teplinskiy who took over as commander of the Airborne Forces in June, last year and in April became deputy commander of the grouping in Ukraine.

The pro-Kremlin military blogger Vladimir Romanov reportedly also indicated that Teplinsky is the one running operations on the Russian side.

This comes after the Wagner group chief Yevgeny Prigozhin and his&nbsp;men said that they had gained control over the Russian city of Rostov and his army continued to ‘march’ towards the capital, Moscow.&nbsp;

<h2>What do we know about the raids?</h2>

According to a report by Saudi Arabia TV news channel Al-Hadath, last week, Russian military police allegedly arrested the head of the Wagner unit in As Suwayda, southern Syria and three “high-ranking commanders” at the Khmeimim Air Base.&nbsp;

The media report also alleged that it was a joint raid conducted by Russian military police and Syrian intelligence who also launched an arrest campaign against the Wagner group in Syria, on Friday evening (June 23). On the same day, Prigozhin’s armed forces declared to have gained control over the Russian city and marched towards Moscow.

Earlier this year, Assad also met with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin and said that he supported Russia’s war in Ukraine and recognises territories claimed by Russia in Ukraine. Syria would also welcome more Russian forces and new military bases which need not be temporary, the Syrian president told the Russian media.

<h2>Wagner leaders, fighters in Syria arrested?</h2>

Al-Hadath also reported that Wagner leaders, including recruiters and fighters, were rounded up amid raids in the three previously mentioned cities and Russian forces allegedly arrested three Wagner officers, one of whom is a lieutenant colonel.&nbsp;

The arrests were also confirmed by a Pentagon official in Washington and the German defence official, reported Sky News Arabia.

It also said that fighter plans had flown sorties as a part of the drill. The previously unannounced drills caused several flights to reroute and led airlines to reschedule flight plans. An hour or so after the airspace was shut, the city government officials also took to the messaging platform and said, “The skies over St. Petersburg are open, all temporary restrictions have been lifted”. The flights began diverting from 11:00 am (local time) and by 12:00 pm (local time) they had resumed.&nbsp;

Russian media had previously reported that the airspace was shut after an unidentified object such as a drone had been spotted in the area, however, this claim has not been confirmed. During a press briefing after the flights had resumed Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declined to comment on the incident or the causes and said Russian President Vladimir Putin has been made fully aware of the situation. Notably, Pulkovo which is around 15 kilometres south of central St. Petersburg, is Russia’s fourth busiest airport.

The targeted attack on Ukrainian infrastructure has left around 10 million Ukrainians without any proper source of electricity and even the World Health Organisation said that the lack of power can result in the winter turning “deadly” for a lot of them.

The city of Kharkiv was one of the first ones to restore electricity in most parts as regional governor Oleg Sinegubov confirmed that the remaining infrastructure should get repaired next week. This was good news for Ukraine after the country decided to impose emergency blackouts to conserve power.

On the other hand, Kyiv decided to stop Metro services to provide shelter to people at the underground stations. Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said that services will resume shortly along with the water supply.

However, a third of Kyiv residents were still without power, Klitschko added.

Ukraine works to restore power as Vladimir Putin meets Russian military officials

The Kremlin said on Monday that the oil price cap imposed by the European Union members may have a major impact on the global energy markets but "will not affect” the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The western countries have imposed massive sanctions on Russia in the aftermath of the conflict but most countries have not stopped their reliance on the imports. After the enforcement of the price cap, Russia said that it was preparing its response while evaluating the impact that it can have on the economy.&nbsp;

"Russia and the Russian economy have the required capacity to fully meet the needs and requirements of the special military operation," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.&nbsp;

Since the implementation of oil price cap, prices around the world have gone up. According to Reuters, the brent crude price went up by around 0.6 per cent and it is currently $86 a barrel.&nbsp;

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has been going on for more 100 days and it has already witnessed untold tragedies and loss of life at an alarming rate. However, the war has also given us some stories of rare heroics. One such story is that of Andriy Pokrasa, 15, and his dad, Stanislav – the duo who are using drones to track the movement of the Russian military. The father-son duo, who lived on the outskirts of the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, used a small drone to follow the movement of the Russian tanks and the data was relayed back to the Ukrainian troops. This resulted in a number of successful counter-offensive missions for Ukraine and made them into heroes in the eyes of Ukraine’s people.

“These were some of the scariest moments of my life,” Andriy told Associated Press while recounting the early days of the Russian invasion.

“We provided the photos and the location to the armed forces. They narrowed down the coordinates more accurately and transmitted them by walkie-talkie, so as to adjust the artillery.”

While Stanislav helps with the process, it is Andriy who pilots the drone. “I can operate the drone, but my son does it much better. We immediately decided he would do it,” Stanislav said.

With the Russian military approaching their village on the western side of Kyiv, they kept operating their drones to gather information before they had to move out in order to avoid getting captured. They were not clear about the impact of their actions but according to Andriy, "around 20 tanks" were destroyed.

Andriy went to Poland with his family but came back to join his father after a few weeks.
