Lokomotiv Moscow coach Markus Gisdol said on Tuesday that he has resigned from his position at the Russian Premier League side in protest against Russia`s war with Ukraine, but the club insisted he had in fact been sacked.

In a statement published by German newspaper Bild, Gisdol said he had been forced to take action having witnessed what is going on in Ukraine.

"I cannot pursue my calling in a country whose leader is responsible for a war of aggression in the middle of Europe," the 52-year-old said. "That is not in line with my values, which is why I have resigned from my position as coach with immediate effect.

"I can`t stand on the training ground in Moscow, train the players, demand professionalism and a few kilometres away orders are given that bring great suffering to an entire people. That is my personal decision and I am absolutely convinced of it."

His club, however, took to Twitter to say that Gisdol had been dismissed.

"Markus Gisdol was dismissed from the post of head coach of FC Lokomotiv. The club and the team are working as usual and are concentrating on achieving the maximum results in the upcoming matches," Lokomotiv said.

The move came a day after FIFA and UEFA jointly suspended Russian teams from all international football, meaning Spartak Moscow, Russia`s only side left in European competition, will no longer compete in the Europa League.

The International Skating Union (ISU) said on Tuesday that competitors from Russia and Belarus will not be allowed to take part in its international events until further notice over Moscow`s invasion of Ukraine.

The move comes a day after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended that sports federations ban Russian and Belarusian athletes and officials from taking part in events following the invasion, which Russia says is a "special operation".

"The ISU Council will continue to closely monitor the situation in Ukraine and its impact on the ISU activity and will take additional steps if and when required," the international governing body for figure skating, speed skating and short track said in a statement.

The decision is the latest blow to figure skating in Russia after the controversy surrounding 15-year-old sensation Kamila Valieva at the Beijing Winter Olympics.

The international volleyball federation (FIVB) also said it had stripped Russia of the men`s world championship scheduled to be held in August and September.

It was a mini 'Hamilton' reunion during the opening of the 2022 Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards on Sunday evening as Lin-Manuel Miranda, Daveed Diggs and Leslie Odom Jr. joined the stage at the start of the show.

'The Hamilton' stars made their first appearance during the show's famous 'I Am an Actor' segment. When the camera focused on them, they all repeatedly spoke at the same time, unable to agree on who should speak. At one point, music started playing which led Miranda to quip, "Are they playing us off?"

Odom Jr also later paid tribute to Ukraine amid Russian President Vladimir Putin launching a military operation in Ukraine, reports hollywoodreporter.com.

"While tonight is a celebration, we are all at the same time holding a place in our hearts for the people of Ukraine and sending our thoughts, prayers and hopes for impending peace," he said.

The actors joined the stage, they noted that the theme for the show was "together again".

"Together again finally we return to a world where all we have to do to hang out like this is get dressed up, show up, get swabbed, sanitised, screen, mask, vaccinated, boosted, rapid tested and PCR cleared in 48 hours, now who's ready to party?" Odom Jr said.

Diggs also jokingly warned that should anyone break safety protocols, the show's "Covid compliance officers are the guards from 'Squid Game'."

Throughout the rest of their monologue, the trio poked fun at some of the nominees, including "Ted Lasso" star Jason Sudeikis, who they noted was not physically there because he owed Diggs $20, and "House of Gucci" star Lady Gaga, whom they praised for having an "ultimate fighting championship belt" among all of her accolades.

They also quipped that 'Being the Ricardos' star Javier Bardem made an appearance in 'Belfast', before showing a photograph comparing his 'No Country for Old Men' character to Judi Dench`s character in 'Belfast'.

Going into the night, 'House of Gucci' and 'The Power of the Dog' are among the top film nominees, with each movie earning three nominations.

On the TV side, top nominees are 'Succession' and 'Ted Lasso', which each secured five nominations.

The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) is planning to take a bold step in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The governing body of football is planning to ban Russia from international football as several global sporting bodies continue to impose sanctions on the country in the wake of their brutality in Ukraine.

As per a report in Reuters, FIFA is set to suspend the Russian national teams from international football until further notice. Both the men's and the women's teams will be barred from taking part in any international competitions until the ban is lifted by the governing body. FIFA is in talks with European football's governing body UEFA to take an official decision on the matter.

UEFA is also set to hold a meeting soon to discuss the issues pertaining to Russian football. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Monday recommended a ban on Russian and Belarusian teams and athletes from taking part in any organised international competitions.

The ban can be a huge setback for Russia as they are scheduled to take on Poland in a FIFA World Cup qualifying match on March 24. If they are suspended from international football, Russia will be out of the World Cup without getting a chance to play against Poland. The Russian women's team will also be banned from international football.

The Polish Football Association along with several other national football associations have already refused to play against Russia in any international competitions. FIFA too had earlier announced strict sanctions against Russia after UEFA had stripped them of the hosting rights for the Champions League final this year.

More than 5,000 people, including military personnel and civilians, have lost their lives so far as the Russian assault on Ukraine entered the fifth day on Monday.

The conflict began on Thursday after Russia’s President Vladimir Putin ordered wide-ranging attacks on Ukraine, hitting multiple cities and bases with air raids or shelling, and attacking by land and sea.

On Sunday, Ukraine’s health ministry claimed that at least 352 civilians, including 14 children, have been killed since the Russian invasion began.

While 1,684 people have been wounded, it said.

The capital Kyiv, however, under a strict state-of-war curfew, continues to be on the edge as the sounds of gunfire and blasts periodically reverberate through the city.

The United Nations said late on Saturday that it has confirmed at least 240 civilian casualties from the fighting, including at least 64 people killed, though it believed the “real figures are considerably higher” because many reports of casualties remain unconfirmed.

The UN said that by Saturday at least 134 from the Ukrainian military had been killed.

On the other hand, there are no actual figures available for Russian troops casualties.

Even though Kremlin acknowledged that there were "killed and injured" soldiers among its troops in Ukraine, it didn’t reveal how many died there.

Russian Defence Ministry spokesman Maj Gen Igor Konashenkov on Sunday said, “There are dead and wounded among our comrades”, without giving any numbers.

He added that Russia's losses were “many times” fewer than those of the Ukrainian force.

But Ukraine’s defence ministry has claimed that Russia has lost approximately 5,300 servicemen and suffered heavy losses in its arsenal.

Since the beginning of the attack, the Russian military has hit 1,067 Ukrainian military facilities, including 27 command posts and communication centres, 38 air defence missile systems and 56 radar stations, Konashenkov also said.

Russian forces have seized two small cities in southeastern Ukraine and the area around a nuclear power plant, the Interfax news agency said.

The invasion has triggered a backlash in Russia, with the police detaining more than 900 people at anti-war protests across 44 Russian cities on Sunday alone, raising the total detained since the assault started four days ago to over 4,000, independent protest monitoring group OVD-Info said.

As the war rages on, Ukraine and Russia decided to hold ceasefire talks in Belarus.

It was not clear whether any progress could be achieved after Russian President Vladimir Putin put Russia`s nuclear-armed units on high alert on Sunday.
