A resident of Moscow told AP news agency that his employer, a state-funded organisation, collected the military registration cards for all male employees of fighting age.

A Chinese-made commercial drone said to be weaponised, called Mugin-5, was shot down by the Ukrainian military in the eastern part of the country over the weekend.

The wreckage of the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) — made by a Chinese manufacturer based in the eastern port city of Xiamen — was found near the city of Sloviansk, eastern Ukraine.

Chinese-made retrofitted, weaponised drone shot down by Ukrainian forces

The head of the Paris Olympics organising committee Tony Estanguet said in an interview to mark 500 days before the start of the Games that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) would have the "last word" on whether athletes from Russian and Belarus will be allowed to compete next year. &nbsp;Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, assisted by its ally Belarus, there have been calls from across the sporting world either to ban their athletes or have them compete under a neutral flag.

Last week, however, the International Fencing Federation (FIE) became the first Olympic sport to reopen events to athletes from the two nations when it decided to allow fencers to compete in Olympic qualifying events, sparking outrage in Ukraine.

"The international federations are currently refining their qualifications, to know if Russian or Belarusian athletes will be allowed to participate in these qualifying competitions," Estanguet told AFP.

"And then the IOC, depending on what the international federations have done, even if Russian or Belarusian athletes have qualified, will be able to say whether it will allow them to participate in these Games or not.

"This decision has not been taken. And Paris 2024 is not in a position to decide."

Estanguet said the priority, however, was not the Olympics but "how the situation can be resolved quickly and how we can best support the Ukrainian people, the Ukrainian athletes".

The three-time Olympic gold medallist said he had discussed the Russia/Belarus question with French President Emmanuel Macron.

"Of course there are exchanges between us and the president of the republic, and between the president and the IOC," Estanguet said.

"Again, it is the IOC that has the last word."

In spite of the crisis surrounding the ongoing war in Ukraine, Estanguet sounded upbeat as he looked ahead to next year's Olympics and Paralympics in the French capital.

"We feel that all the ingredients are in place for the magic of the Games to work," he said.

"The athletes are already qualifying, the infrastructure continues to advance... fans are readying themselves. Three million tickets were sold in the first phase of sales, in less than three weeks, a record in France.

"The green light is on, we are on schedule, we still have the same ambitions."

In spite of the high sales, the organising committee has come in for criticism for the high price of tickets and the system being used to sell them.

"There are many more people interested than there are tickets available, even though we have 13 million tickets," he said, citing numbers for the Olympics and the Paralympics combined.

"There are still opportunities (to get tickets). That starts with the second phase (beginning on Wednesday).

As many as 81 missiles were used on Ukrainian infrastructure during Thursday morning’s massive attack, including the famed Kinzhals, or “Daggers” in Russian, that have the ability to evade Kyiv’s air defences, the Ukrainian military said, according to CNN.

“The attack is really large-scale and for the first time using such different types of missiles. We see that this time as many as six Kinzhal were used. This is an attack like I don’t remember seeing before,” Yurii Ihnat, spokesman for the Air Force Command of Ukraine, said on Ukrainian television Thursday.

The Ukrainian military claimed they were able to successfully shoot down 34 cruise missiles and four Iranian-made Shahed drones.

“So far, we have no capabilities to counter these weapons,” he added, referring to the Kinzhals.

He further said that among the lethal mix of missiles, Russian forces have also launched six X-22 air-launched cruise missiles— a Soviet-era long-range airborne supersonic cruise missile.

Russia's Wagner mercenary group claimed on Friday that the Russians have surrounded the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut. Other reports claimed that the fight for the key battleground city is raging 'round-the-clock'.&nbsp;

Reports in the Ukrainian media cited authorities saying that they discovered hastily buried bodies in 'makeshift graves' when the Russian forces briefly gained control of villages and towns near Kyiv. The Kremlin has not clarified on the accusations till the time of filing of this report.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian forces were reported to be clinging on to Bakhmut despite what is being seen as a position of Russian advantage during the ongoing conflict.&nbsp;

The Russian forces have reportedly been attacking Bakhmut in Donetsk province for months, sometimes in waves, and the site has become one of the bloodiest battles of the war.

"Fighting is going on in Bakhmut round the clock...The situation is critical," Volodymyr Nazarenko, a deputy commander in the National Guard of Ukraine, was quoted as saying by Ukrainian NV Radio.

For Russia, taking Bakhmut would be a step towards seizing the rest of the surrounding industrial region known as the Donbas.

Battle for Bakhmut rages on ‘round the clock’ as Russia intensifies offensive

The United States is set to announce more military package to war-hit Ukraine on Friday, with Reuters news agency reporting it to be roughly worth $400 million, mainly ammunition.

Though the amount of the package hasn’t been revealed officially, two US officials who are familiar with the deal told Reuters that it would cost the US $400 million.

The military deal contains more Guided Multiple Launch Rockets (GMLRS) for HIMARS launchers, ammunition for the Bradley Fighting Vehicles, and armoured vehicle launched bridges.

According to reports, the military aid will be funded by the Presidential Drawdown Authority, in which the president can authorise the transfer of articles and services from US stocks without congressional approval in response to an emergency.

It is reported that President Joe Biden will discuss aid for Ukraine during his meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz at the White House on Friday.

Meanwhile, on the sidelines of the G20 foreign ministers meeting in India’s capital New Delhi, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Thursday where the US official urged Moscow to end the war and reverse its suspension of the New START (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty) on nuclear weapons, a senior US official told Reuters.

This was the first in-person encounter between the top diplomats since the invasion.

The Russian foreign ministry said Lavrov and Blinken spoke "on the move" for less than 10 minutes.

Even as Ukraine seeks India’s backing in a draft resolution against Russia at the upcoming UN General Assembly meet, New Delhi has been taking great efforts to avoid discussion on additional sanctions against Moscow at the G20 bloc’s finance chiefs gathering scheduled to take place on Thursday in India's southern Bengaluru city.

According to Reuters news agency, which has quoted Indian government sources, India was not keen on discussing the issue even though US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that they will "join with allies in holding Russia accountable" for the war during G20 meetings in India.

"India is not keen to discuss or back any additional sanctions on Russia during the G20. The existing sanctions on Russia have had a negative impact on the world,” one of the unnamed Indian officials was quoted as saying.

Apart from that, confusion prevailed at the meeting convened on Wednesday to decide on the draft of the G20 communique witnessed.

Despite India’s best efforts to form a consensus on the words by calling it a "crisis" or a "challenge" instead of a "war", discussions remained inconclusive, delegates of at least seven countries present in the meetings told Reuters.

Meanwhile, a top US official on Tuesday described President Vladimir Putin's&nbsp;accusations that Russia had been threatened by the West&nbsp;"absurdity."

"Nobody is attacking Russia. There's a kind of absurdity in the notion that Russia was under some form of military threat from Ukraine or anyone else," White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told reporters.

Putin added that the "material state" of those living in Ukraine has degraded.

"They are responsible for the escalation of the situation in Ukraine for the huge numbers of casualties," said Putin.

"And of course, the Kyiv regime is essentially alien to the people of Ukraine. They are not protecting their own interests, but those of their minder countries."&nbsp;

Putin also said that the West's sanctions have failed to derail the country's war-effort&nbsp;and claimed that they have not&nbsp;destabilised its economy.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has urged the alliance member countries to ramp up ammunition production for Ukraine while warning that Russian President Vladimir Putin is preparing fresh attacks against the embattled country.&nbsp;

Speaking to reporters in Brussels on Monday, Stoltenberg said that Ukraine's consumption of ammunition is much greater than the production capacity of the collective West.&nbsp;

He added that it represents not only a challenge to Kyiv, but also to NATO, given that it also means its own stockpiles are being depleted.&nbsp;

“The urgent issue right now is to deliver what has always been promised”, namely armoured vehicles, including German Marders and US Bradleys, Leopard battle tanks and others. &nbsp;

“We need the training, we need the equipment, we need the ammunition and that’s exactly what allies are now providing and will be a top issue at the meetings today here at&nbsp;NATO,” he added.&nbsp;

According to the Associated Press news agency,&nbsp;Ukraine&nbsp;is consuming 6,000-7,000 artillery shells a day, about a third of the number Russia is using.&nbsp;

The member countries have assembled in Brussels for the ninth meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, which focuses on providing support to Ukraine in its war against Russia.&nbsp;

US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin, who is also participating in the meeting, said he expects to see Ukraine conduct an offensive in the spring.&nbsp;

“What Ukraine wants to do at the first possible moment is to establish or create momentum and establish conditions on the battlefield that continue to be in its favour,” he said in a news conference in Brussels on Tuesday.&nbsp;

On Saturday, the Russian mercenary Wagner Group said its forces had taken control of Blahodatne, but Kyiv said it had repelled an attack on the village.&nbsp;

Bakhmut has emerged as the latest flashpoint of the Russia-Ukraine battle as Moscow looks to gain control of the prized Donbas region.&nbsp;

Since the invasion, Russia has been eyeing control of the Donbas region, where the separatists backed by Moscow have been fighting the Ukrainian government since 2014.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The move prompted strong reactions from Pyongyang with a senior North Korean official warning that the US would face a “really undesirable result” if it persists in spreading the “self-made rumour”.

“Trying to tarnish the image of [North Korea] by fabricating a non-existent thing is a grave provocation that can never be allowed and that cannot but trigger its reaction,” said Kwon Jong-gun, director general of the department of US affairs.

He also called it “a foolish attempt to justify its offer of weapons to Ukraine”.

Apart from China, Russia is one of North Korea’s few international friends and has previously come to the regime’s aid.

Russian media reports claiming that mercenary group Wagner is hiring Serbian locals for the Ukrainian war has caused outrage in the country, with the president asking the group to back off and stop involving their citizens in the conflict.

The public outburst from Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic on Tuesday is considered rare, given that Serbia is known to be a close ally of Russia.

“Why do you, from Wagner, call anyone from Serbia when you know that it is against our regulations?” Vucic said on Serbian television.

He slammed Russian websites and social media groups for posting hiring advertisements in the Serbian language, in which the Wagner Group calls on volunteers to join its ranks, according to local reports.

Vucic reiterated that Serbia was "neutral" regarding the war in Ukraine, but added that he had not spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin for "many months", reports BBC.

Russia’s RIA news agency on Tuesday published footage purportedly showing two Serbian citizens participating in a weapons training course in Ukraine.
