Moscow claimed Monday that four US-made missiles were shot down by its air defence systems over a southern Russian region bordering Ukraine. This is the first time Russia has made such a claim since it started the war in Ukraine 10 months back.

"Four American 'HARM' anti-radar missiles were shot down in the airspace over the Belgorod region," Russia's defence ministry said in a statement on social media, referring to a region that says it is regularly hit by Ukrainian strikes.

HARM missiles have a range of more than 48 kilometres and are designed to "seek and destroy" radar-equipped air defense systems, according to the US Air Force.&nbsp;

On Tuesday,&nbsp;President Vladimir Putin said the situation in the four areas of Ukraine that Moscow declared a part of&nbsp;Russia&nbsp;was "extremely difficult". He has ordered security services to step up surveillance to secure its borders and combat new threats.

Speaking on Security Services Day, Putin said, amid the "emergence of new threats" means that there is a greater&nbsp; need for intelligence activity.

"Work must be intensified through the border services and the Federal Security Service (FSB)," Putin said.

"Any attempts to violate it (the border) must be thwarted quickly and effectively using whatever forces and means we have at our disposal, including mobile action units and special forces," he added.

Putin also visited Belarus on Monday for the first time since 2019, raising fears he might pressure Minsk to open a new invasion front.

Meanwhile, Vyacheslav Gladkov, the governor of Belgorod region, claimed that residential and industrial buildings were hit by shelling, leaving one dead and 10 injured.&nbsp;

“Yesterday was an extremely difficult day. There was shelling from the Ukrainian Armed Forces," said Gladkov in a post on the messaging app Telegram on Monday. &nbsp;

Putin orders surveillance of Russian citizens & borders as Moscow shoots down four US-made missiles

In the wake of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Belarus, Ukraine has tightened up its defences in the border near the European country fearing that Russia may launch a fresh attack from there.

Speaking to BBC, Ukraine’s Deputy Interior Minister Yevhen Yenin said that Kyiv is bolstering the Belarusian border with armed forces and ammunition.

The comment comes in response to Russian&nbsp;defence ministry's announcement that its troops stationed in Belarus would conduct joint military exercises with Belarus.

Reacting to this remark, Yenin said, "We are building up our defence lines all across the border.”

Belarus, a close ally of Russia, has supported Putin’s war on Ukraine and recently allowed Russian troops to use its territory to launch the invasion in February.

Putin is currently in Minsk for talks with President Alexander Lukashenko. It is the first time in three-and-a-half years that both leaders have met in Belarus.

Though the purpose of the visit is unknown, there have been reports in the Western media that Putin will urge Lukashenko to join its war against Ukraine.

But such assertions were firmly denied by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov calling it "as totally stupid, groundless fabrications."

The meeting was described as a "working visit" and lasted for more than two hours, reports BBC.

Putin later said that he and Lukashenko were discussing forming “a single defence space” in the region, but refuted allegations that Moscow was poised to swallow its neighbour.

“Russia isn’t interested in any kind of merger. It’s not feasible,” Putin said.

Lukashenko thanked his Russian counterpart for providing his military with Iskander short-range missiles and S-400 air defence systems. He also said the countries agreed to continue to hold joint military exercises.

The ninth package of EU punitive measures against Russia for its war in Ukraine was approved by EU leaders at a summit Thursday. It was formally adopted Friday by written procedure.

European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said the package also focuses “on tech, finance and media to push the Russian economy and war machine further off the rails.”

Von der Leyen added that the new sanctions target “almost 200 individuals and entities involved in attacks on civilians and kidnapping children.” Russia’s open effort to adopt Ukrainian children and bring them up as Russian is already well underway, in one of the most explosive issues of the war, an Associated Press&nbsp;investigation&nbsp;has showed.

Full details of the package will be revealed once they are published in the bloc’s legal records.

The targets of the latest recommended sanctions included government ministers, lawmakers, regional governors and political parties. The EU Commission also wanted to hit more Russian banks and to impose export controls and restrictions on products like chemicals, nerve agents, electronics and IT components that could be used by the armed forces.

New EU sanctions target Russian military-industrial complex

A volley of Russian strikes hit&nbsp;several cities across Ukraine early Friday after air raids sirens were sounded across the region. At least two people were reportedly killed.&nbsp;

The Associated Press, citing Ukrainian authorities, said that there were explosions in at least three cities in Ukraine on Friday morning - Kyiv, Kryvyi Rih in the south and the northeastern city of Kharkiv.

“Explosions in Kharkiv for the second day in a row. An infrastructure facility was previously under missile attack. There may be electrical problems ... Be careful and stay in cover,” Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov&nbsp;said via Telegram, according to a Google translate.

Terekhov said that the city is without electricity.&nbsp;Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said explosions were heard in the Desnyan district and warned residents to take shelter.

Earlier,&nbsp;Mykolaiv region’s Governor Vitaly Kim said that 60 Russian missiles were sported heading to Ukrainian air space.

The head of the "people's militia" in Luhansk on his Telegram channel claimed that there were civilian casualties as a result of Ukrainian shelling on the town of Svatove on Friday morning. He provided no further details of the attack.

Russia is building a large army base in the captured port city of Mariupol in east Ukraine, satellite photos released by the American company Maxar Technologies revealed.&nbsp;The photo appeared to show the U-shaped compound near the centre of the city, with the roof pained in the red, white and blue star of the Russian army.

A Russian Army slogan can also be seen on the roof with the message, "From Russian army for Mariupol citizens".

Maxar in a tweet claimed that the building appeared to be a military facility, which is being used as weapons storage.

"In Mariupol, a Russian military compound has been recently built in the north-centre of the city. Notice the Russian Army slogan on the top of the roof (sic),” the space technology company tweeted.

According to Maxar photos, the city’s main cemetery has also been expanded.

"The main city cemetery (Starokrymske) on the western side of Mariupol has had a significant expansion of the number of graves."

The Ukrainian military has claimed that Russia is now using nuclear-capable missiles with non-explosive warheads against the country's air defences. Military official Mykola Danyliuk showed fragments of what he claimed are parts of Soviet-made Kh-55 cruise missiles that are designed for nuclear use. He said that they are being used to "exhaust the air-defence system of our country".&nbsp;

"This is a substitute for a thermo-nuclear guided charge," he said.

Danyliuk said the Kh-55 had not been used by Russia in Ukraine before October&nbsp;31.&nbsp;

The official added that the pieces were tested and they did not show abnormal levels of radioactivity. Ukraine believes that having carried out several missile strikes against the country's infrastructure, Moscow's arsenal has depleted significantly. This is why it is now using blunt projectiles that still cause devastation.

&nbsp;Kh-55 cruise missiles &nbsp;are also known as AS-15 by Nato, and the pieces were found in the Lviv and Khmelnytsky regions. The missiles were designed during Soviet times to hit "strategic targets with predetermined co-ordinates".&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the UK said the missiles were designed "exclusively as a nuclear delivery system". However, it seems the Russian military removed the nuclear warheads and replaced them with an inert system before firing them.

Danyliuk noted that the missile could cause enough damage even with a non-explosive warhead because of its kinetic energy and fuel residues.

"This is evidenced by the latest strike when a Kh-55 missile hit a residential building," he said.

Meanwhile, Ukraine's top security officials have ordered an investigation into the activities of a branch of the Orthodox Church linked historically to Moscow, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday.

He added that the probe would look into whether the Moscow branch of the church was entitled to operate at one of Ukraine's most hallowed sites, the Pechersk Lavra complex in Kyiv.

The Orthodox Church in Russia has backed Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

"We have to create conditions so that no actors dependent on the aggressor state (Russia) can manipulate Ukrainians and weaken Ukraine from within," Zelenskiy said in a video address.

A Ukrainian official has claimed that Iranian military advisers aiding Russia were killed in Crimea, and warned to carry out targeted attacks against Iranians if they are found in occupied territories and helping Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The remarks were made by the secretary of Ukraine’s national security and defence council, Oleksiy Danilov, who said&nbsp;that the Iranians were in Crimea to help Russia operate the Shahed-136 armed drones supplied by the Tehran government.

Though he did not divulge how many were killed, Israeli media in October reported that 10 from the Iranian armed forces were eliminated in the Ukrainian strikes.

“You shouldn’t be where you shouldn’t be,” Danilov said, in an interview in Kyiv, reports Guardian.

“They were on our territory. We didn’t invite them here, and if they collaborate with terrorists and participate in the destruction of our nation we must kill them.”

Earlier this month, Iran’s foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian admitted of having supplied a “small number” of drones to&nbsp;Russia, a few months before Putin launched the invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

He, however, denied that Tehran was continuing to supply drones to Moscow.

Meanwhile, Kyiv is struggling to restore its energy grid, which was bombarded by Russian strikes over the week.

On Thursday, much of Ukraine remained without heat or power even as residents in Kyiv scrambled to stock up on water, food and warm clothing fearing further targeted strikes.

According to mayor Vitaly Klitschko, about 60 per cent of three million residents in Kyiv are without power, with temperatures expected to fall well below freezing.

The senior general at the Pentagon said there was a "low probability" of Ukraine forcing Russia militarily to leave&nbsp;the occupied territories, including Crimea, adding that Moscow was still superior to its neighbour in terms of combat power despite suffering few setbacks in the war.

The Chinese military would suffer a strategic setback if they launched an attack on Taiwan in the near future, Milley told reporters.&nbsp;

"I think he evaluates things on cost, benefit, and risk, and I think that he would conclude that an attack on Taiwan in the near future would be an excessive amount of risk," he said.&nbsp;

According to Milley, that would halt China's ascent to the position of the world's leading economic and military power.

He said that the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February, which was thwarted by unexpectedly resolute Kyiv defences armed with Western weapons, provided instructive lessons.&nbsp;
