Britain`s four days of Platinum Jubilee celebrations to mark Queen Elizabeth`s 70 years on the throne conclude on Sunday with a pageant through central London, and with tens of thousands of people expected to take part in nationwide street parties.

Singer Ed Sheeran and more than 100 "national treasures" ranging from former soccer player Gary Lineker to children`s TV puppet Basil Brush will join military bands, performers and dancers in the parade through the capital.

The procession, which will follow a similar route the 96-year-old took on her coronation day in 1953, aims to evoke the different decades of her record-breaking reign.

There were will also be a series of "Big Jubilee Lunches" across Britain, with an estimated 16,000 street parties, and some 600 also being held across the globe, including in Canada, Brazil, New Zealand, Japan and South Africa.

The final day of festivities comes after her son and heir Prince Charles, 73, paid a personal tribute to his mother at a glittering pop concert outside Buckingham Palace on Saturday night.

"You pledged to serve your whole life – you continue to deliver. That is why we are here," Charles said in his message to the queen, who was at her Windsor Castle residence outside London.

"You have met us and talked with us. You laugh and cry with us and, most importantly, you have been there for us, for these 70 years," Charles added, referring to the queen as "mummy" at an event which began with a pre-recorded comic sketch of the 96-year-old monarch having tea with Paddington Bear.

Saturday`s concert was among a number of Jubilee events that Elizabeth has missed because of "episodic mobility problems", which have recently caused her to cancel engagements.

Elizabeth ascended the throne aged 25 on the death of her father, George VI, in 1952, inheriting dominion over a Britain still emerging from the ravages of World War Two and with Winston Churchill as prime minister.

In total, there have been 14 UK prime ministers and 14 U.S. presidents during her reign; the Berlin Wall rose and fell; Britain joined and left the European Union; and her nation`s own once-mighty empire disintegrated, replaced by a Commonwealth of 54 nations.

Elizabeth was instrumental in creating the latter and many regard its success as her greatest achievement.

"You continue to make history," said Charles, adding that his father, Prince Philip, who died last year aged 99 after more than seven decades by the queen`s side, would have enjoyed the show.

The four days of celebrations to mark the monarch`s seven decades as queen began on Thursday with a military parade and a Royal Air Force flypast, and with a National Service of Thanksgiving on Friday.

Opinion polls suggest a comfortable majority of Britons believe the monarchy should remain and a recent Ipsos survey found nine out of 10 respondents supported her.

There is now an 'assistant minister for the republic' in Australia, raising the possibility that the Queen will no longer be the country's head of state. Anthony Albanese, the new prime minister, chose Sydney MP Matt Thistlethwaite, 51, as a senior party figure.

Although creating a republic was not in Albanese's programme, past Labor leaders had pledged it. In a referendum in 1999, 55% of voters said no to a republic.

The Australian Republic Movement, which advocates for an Australian head of state, applauded the initiative.

"We are on our way," proclaimed Peter FitzSimons, a prominent republican, author and former rugby international.

"Let the record show, for the first time in the history of the Commonwealth, Australia has a member of the government singularly devoted to removing the crown, and helping Australia become a republic," he added.

In a referendum in 1999, 55 percent of Australians decided against becoming a republic. The triumph was attributed to a debate over a suggestion that the Queen's replacement be chosen by parliamentarians rather than the general public.

Albanese said on Tuesday that Labor had won enough votes in the federal elections on May 21 to govern without the help of minor parties or independents. On July 26, the new parliament will convene.

Australia step closer to replacing Queen as it appoints ‘minister for republic’

A 28-year-old man was arrested for allegedly trespassing the Buckingham Palace ground after he told the staff, "I want to see the Queen”.

According to the Mirror newspaper, Connor Attridge, who has a facial tattoo reading “truly blessed”, allegedly ran through the vehicle gate of the Royal Mews on Sunday night.

He managed to cover three to five meters beyond the palace boundary after he was confronted by a member of the household staff. Attridge had told the staff, "I want to come in. I want to see the Queen.

The shocking incident takes place just days ahead of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations where security has been tightened around the palace.

Following his arrest, Attridge was brought to Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

In the hearing, prosecutor Leila Nahaboo-Osman said the area where Attridge allegedly trespassed is "one of the most heavily guarded places in London".

Daniel Mullin, defending, said his client suffers from mental health issues, did not use "stealth" and had "no motive or desire to go further than he did", having allegedly breached the boundary by just metres.

"This was at worst reckless and at best bordering on an accidental offence," he said.

District Judge Nina Tempia adjourned the case to June 28 for the Crown Prosecution Service to obtain consent from Attorney General Suella Braverman, which is required in cases involving trespass on a protected site.

On June 2, the four-day festivities will kick off with the Trooping the Colour, the sovereign's official birthday parade, where the Queen is expected to join working members of the royal family on the Buckingham Palace balcony.

Hollywood legend Tom Hanks and his co-star Austin Butler recently came together for a talk show and together they promoted their upcoming movie 'Elvis'. During the fun conversation, Hanks took a trip down memory lane and spoke about his dinner meeting with the Queen and the Obamas.

He revealed that the Queen’s drink of choice is a martini and he learned this fact while sitting next to her at the dinner table.

On the BBC’s The One Show, Hanks said, “The chit chat with The Queen is something that you’ve got to get ready for. I knew I was going to be sat next to her and so I wanted to be able to talk about things that were of import but not presumptuous."

"Out of nowhere, I noticed this gloved hand place a tumbler of clear liquid between me and Her Royal Majesty. But it was not in a water glass."

“It was a clear liquid and so I dared to ask the Queen, ‘and what is Your Majesty’s cocktail of choice?’, and she said, ‘ooh, martini!’.

“She had the one, that’s what she nursed throughout the course of the night, and I think, well, she’s had a wonderful reign so maybe if I were to polish up my game a bit I’ll start to drink martinis,” Hanks concluded.

Angela Wood proudly recalls the poached chicken in creamy curry sauce recipe that she helped create for Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953, and which has since become a British culinary classic.

Coronation Chicken -- also called 'Poulet Reine Elizabeth' -- is now so popular it can be found in supermarket ready-meals, pre-packed sandwiches and on the pages of many recipe books.

"It's not the same recipe though. It's just mayonnaise with a bit of curry put in," Wood, 89, says laughing as she talks about some modern versions of the famous dish.

Wood was only 19 when, as a student at the renowned Le Cordon Bleu culinary school in Winkfield, near Windsor, west of London, she was asked to perfect a recipe created by the school's director, Constance Spry.

Spry had been given the task of putting on a banquet for foreign dignitaries after the coronation on June 2, 1953.

"Constance Spry walked into the kitchen and said 'this is something we're thinking of doing for the coronation... we'll keep testing it until we get it right,'" said Wood at her home in the picturesque market town of Kimbolton in eastern England.

"Knowing that it was going to be foreign dignitaries from all over the world, she decided that it had to be slightly spicy but not over spicy," she told AFP.

Another constraint was that the dish had to be prepared in advance so had to be cold, added Wood, looking elegant with short white hair, fuchsia-coloured lips and a matching cardigan.

The ingredients also had to be available in the UK, where, even for a royal banquet, imported food was limited after World War II because of rationing.

- A strange mix -

So Wood set to work in the kitchen, experimenting "two or three times a week, for possibly three or four weeks".

"We were forever boiling chickens," she said.

After constantly tweaking the ingredients, they found the right balance.

Wood showed AFP the original recipe, published in an old edition of the British gastronomic classic "The Constance Spry Cookery Book".

The chicken should be poached with a bouquet garni, while the sauce is a reduction of chopped onions, curry powder, tomato puree, red wine and lemon juice.

The mixture is then cooled and added to mayonnaise, lightly whipped cream and apricot puree.

"It's a strange mixture. And people do the first bit (curry powder and wine) and taste it and it's just so horrible and strong," she laughs.

"I mean you can't believe that it can be right."

Wood is sometimes asked why she didn't use mango, as is used in many of today's versions of the classic.

"Well, we didn't have mangoes..., we didn't have Greek yoghurt," she said, adding that "nowadays people add all sorts of things".

The dish was described on the banquet menu, written in French, as "Poulet Reine Elizabeth" and was served to the 350 foreign guests with a rice salad containing peas and herbs.

It followed a tomato and tarragon soup and trout.

Strawberry galette was served for pudding, all washed down with Moselle and Champagne wines.

- Platinum pudding -

Wood never pursued a professional career as a cook, and instead ran the family farm after she got married.

But for special occasions, she and her daughter still sometimes prepare the recipe that has assured her place in British culinary history.

She said she is "honoured" to have helped create the British classic, which earned her a reception with the Queen at the royal estate in Sandringham in February to mark her 70 years on the throne.

To celebrate the monarch's record-breaking Platinum Jubilee, which will see four days of celebrations in early June, Britons have been invited to create a dessert for the Queen.

The best entry is due to be announced on Thursday.

"It's quite surprising how it (Coronation Chicken) certainly stood the test of time and I hope whoever wins the pudding, the same thing happens," said Wood.

It would be a fitting tribute to "the most incredible reign" and a woman who "dedicated her whole life to the country", she adds.

UK's Queen meets Canada's PM in first in-person meeting since catching Covid; pays tribute to Ukraine

Prince Charles has been reinfected with the coronavirus and met recently with his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, raising questions about whether the 95-year-old monarch is at risk of contracting the virus.

The queen is not showing symptoms of COVID-19, according to an official at Buckingham Palace, who said the queen was being monitored closely. The official did not say whether the queen had been tested for the virus, nor did he offer specific details about when Charles, who tested positive Thursday, was last in contact with her. Charles was at Windsor Castle, where the queen is currently in residence, on Tuesday for an investiture ceremony, according to a palace official.

Elizabeth received a dose of coronavirus vaccine in January 2021 at Windsor Castle, along with her husband, Prince Philip. The palace has not confirmed any subsequent vaccine doses. Charles has said that he is fully vaccinated and boosted.

In recent weeks, the queen has begun appearing again in public after a difficult stretch last fall, when she cancelled a number of public engagements because of what Buckingham Palace officials described as exhaustion.

Philip died in April 2021 at the age of 99, and the queen was forced to isolate herself during his funeral service because of the pandemic. A photographer captured a poignant image of her, grieving alone and wearing a mask, in a choir stall at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor.

Charles, who is 73 and the heir to the throne, has gone into self-isolation, according to his household, Clarence House. He contracted and recovered from a mild case of the virus in March 2020, when it was first engulfing Britain. His representatives did not immediately comment on the severity of his infection this time.

Charles got the news that he had tested positive Thursday morning, according to Clarence House, and postponed a trip to Winchester, England, at the last minute. He “is deeply disappointed not to be able to attend today’s events in Winchester and will look to reschedule his visit as soon as possible,” Clarence House said in a statement.

Speaking to Sky News in June 2020, Charles said he “got away with it quite lightly” the first time he contracted the virus.

“I was lucky in my case,” he said, “but I’ve had it, and I can so understand what other people have gone through.”

Charles’ wife, Camilla, tested negative for the virus and has continued with her schedule of public appearances, according to Clarence House.

On Wednesday evening, she and her husband attended a gala reception at the British Museum. Other guests included three senior British government officials: the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak; the home secretary, Priti Patel; and the health secretary, Sajid Javid.

The queen marked the 70th anniversary of her accession to the throne Saturday at her country estate, Sandringham. In a statement issued that day, she said she hoped that when Charles succeeded her, Camilla would be known as queen — a major endorsement that the couple had long sought from the monarch.

“We are deeply conscious of the honour represented by my mother’s wish,” Charles said in a statement. “As we have sought together to serve and support Her Majesty and the people of our communities, my darling wife has been my own steadfast support throughout.”

New Zealand's Maori Party has said that the country should stop considering British monarch as head of the state. Maori, the indigenous people of New Zealand faced oppression during colonial times.

The call for 'divorce' from the British monarchy came on 182nd anniversary of signing of the Treaty of Waitangi.

Te Tiriti o Waitangi, as it is called in the Maori language is the foundational legal document.

“If you look at our founding covenant as a marriage between tangata whenua [indigenous people] and the crown, then Te Tiriti is the child of that marriage. It’s time [for] tangata whenua to take full custody,” Maori Party co-leader Rawiri Waititi said as quoted by The Guardian.

“This won’t mean the crown is off the hook. If a couple gets divorced, you don’t lose responsibility for your child. This will be an opportunity to reimagine a more meaningful and fulfilling partnership,”

The Treaty of Waitangi recognised Maori rights on their lands and provided guarantee against their possession by the crown. However, in 100 years after sigining of the treaty about 90 per cent of Maori lands were confiscated by colonial interests.

Among New Zealanders opinion to stop considering British Queen as head of state finds backers. As per 1News Colmar Brunton Poll, 30 per cent of the respondents preferred severing ties with the queen while 47 per cent were against such a move. 20 per cent of the respondents were undecided.

UK turns blind eye to Covid rise, looks to celebrate queen's 70 years on throne

One of the Queen’s Royal Guards trampled over a kid who got in his way during a routine patrol at the Tower of London. A video of the incident has gone viral.

The clip purportedly shows a kid accidentally stepping into the path of one of the two guards who were marching in unison in front of a small crowd.

Following the incident, the Ministry of Defence issued a statement to the Daily Mail Online.

The United Kingdom police arrested a 19-year-old who entered the grounds of Windsor Castle with a crossbow, where Britain's Queen Elizabeth II was spending Christmas with some other members of the Royal Family.

Thames Valley Police Superintendent Rebecca Mears said, "The man has been arrested on suspicion of breach or trespass of a protected site and possession of an offensive weapon."

The Metropolitan Police later said that the Southampton man was stopped "within moments" and he did not enter any buildings. The incident happened around 08:30 GMT on Christmas Day.

The police also said that the man was "in the care of medical professionals" but later a report by British tabloid The Sun reported that the crossbow-wielding man was threatening to "assassinate the Queen in revenge for the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre".

The Sun published a report citing a video obtained by them, which shows the man [the suspect of Windsor Castle breach], clad in a black hoodie with a mask, holding a black crossbow and using a distorted voice to make the threats.

Michael Fagan incident

The Windsor Castle security breach recalls the shocking Michael Fagan incident when he broke into the Queen's bedroom in Buckingham Palace in 1982 when she was sleeping.

The intrusion happened in the early hours of July 9 when Fagan scaled Buckingham Palace's 14-foot-high perimeter wall, climbing up the drainpipe, entering the Palace. The British man somehow managed to reach the Queen's bedroom.

His movements were detected by an alarm sensor but it is claimed that the security silenced it after they thought it to be faulty. Reports have mentioned that Fagan roamed the corridors of the majestic Palace for several minutes.

He reportedly broke a glass ashtray when he had entered one of the rooms and cut his hand. If reports are believed to be true, he was carrying a fragment of the glass when he entered the Queen's bedroom.

Well, this wasn't the first time, Fagan's first intrusion into the palace took place in early June 1982 when he had reportedly entered the Palace and then sneaked back out.

Queen Elizabeth, who enjoys a dry martini every day, has been advised by her doctors to forego her routine of having the alcoholic beverage every evening.

According to a report from Vanity Fair, who cited two sources from close to the Queen, “Doctors have advised the Queen to forgo alcohol except for special occasions to ensure she is as healthy as possible for her busy autumn schedule and ahead of her Platinum Jubilee celebrations next June.”

The report comes after the Queen, who is in good health physically, was seen using a cane for some time now, including when she addressed the Welsh Parliament and was in the news after she appeared with a cane after her knee surgery.

Palace sources further said the Queen enjoys a drink most nights and usually chooses a dry martini.
