The Islamabad High Court on Tuesday (August 29) suspended former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s three-year jail sentence in the Toshakhana case (state gifts). It means that the Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman will soon be set free; although he won’t be able to fight the upcoming national elections until his sentence is completely annulled.

Imran may have gotten the final relief from the court now, but his time in jail wasn’t that miserable at all.

In fact, according to media reports, he was getting five-star facilities in Attock Jail of Punjab too. Special arrangements were made for the former prime minister, right from serving delicious chicken and mutton cooked in desi ghee to providing a special comfortable bed and chair.

<h2>Imran got special treatment in jail</h2>

According to New Day Express, the Attock jail authorities made sure Imran gets to enjoy his stay in the barrack as much as possible. The jail administration made the toilet bigger in size.&nbsp;

The washroom was adorned with amenities like a shower, tissue holder, towels and other things that are not available to common inmates. Also, a large sink was installed to let the PTI chief wash clothes with ease.

At least 53 personnel were deployed to provide Imran Khan security inside the jail premises. Not only that, according to his wishes, he was served special chicken and mutton twice a week.&nbsp;

Khan also got a comfortable bed, pillows, a chair and a special mat. A cooler was also installed to let Imran sleep in peace during hot nights. Before sleeping, he was also given some books to read.

Contrary to reports emerging in Pakistan media, Imran Khan’s own party says the PTI chief was actually offered ‘B-class’ treatment.

Dawn reported Imran’s lawyer as saying, “The prison authorities were kept 'absolutely in the dark'&nbsp;about the plan to shift Imran Khan to Attock Jail.”

Khan further counted off his government's achievements, mentioning the 'Billion Tree Tsunami', Pakistan's handling of the coronavirus pandemic, etc. Making mention of "three long marches" that took place during his regime, Khan said that no FIRs happened back then and that "whatever has happened since 25th March is planned".

Comparing the current scenario to General Pervez Musharraf's reign after the military coup of 1999, Khan said that even then, the situation wasn't this bad.

"What's happening now is a negation of our Jamhuriat (democracy)," said Imran Khan, adding that "fundamental rights, Supreme court orders are being ignored."

He also reiterated that the constitutional direction "to hold elections within 90 days was ignored by the government."

"Democracy is dead," said Khan, adding that he is appealing "to 15 judges of our Supreme Court on behalf of our people."&nbsp;

He said that "so far it seems that you are losing your power, freedom in front of the powerful" and urged them to "take a stand."

"History will remember your role," he implored.

"It is the right of every citizen to protest peacefully those who cause chaos and vandalism should be dealt with, but to destroy the entire party under the guise of it is the negation of democracy and the law of the jungle."

Khan further urged the "Judiciary to issue a suo motu notice that the women who only protested peacefully should be released and a full judicial inquiry should be conducted into the" chaos that happened during the recent protests in Pakistan.&nbsp;"We will fully cooperate in this," added Imran Khan.&nbsp;

The matter is linked to the founding of&nbsp;Al-Qadir University. Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi, and other PTI party leaders are alleged to have committed wrongdoing with regard to the Al-Qadir Trust, formed to back the university. The issue concerns an alleged agreement between his government and a real estate magnate that cost Pakistan's struggling economy $50 billion.

In order to establish the Al-Qadir University and provide "quality education" in the Sohawa Tehsil of Punjab's Jhelum area, Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi, and his close aides Zulfiqar Bukhari and Babar Awan established the Al-Qadir Project Trust, reported India Today.&nbsp;

Later, in 2019, Bushra Bibi signed a memorandum with the private real estate firm Bahria Town in order to accept donations from them. The trust later acquired land measuring 458 kanals, 4 marlas, and 58 square feet from Bahria Town as part of their agreement.

However, according to Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, Imran Khan worked out the division of the land and transferred 240 kanals of the donated land in the name of Farah Gogi, a close friend of Bushra Bibi.

According to Sanaullah, the value of this land had been underestimated and Khan obtained his part in the name of the institution. He further said that the previous PM sought to cover up the matter.&nbsp;

The scam was brought to light when the Pakistani media noted that the trust received 180 million Pakistani rupees even though the documents showed expenses of just 8.52 million Pakistani rupees. Additionally, they questioned why the institution was charging students if it was recognised as a trust.

Imran Khan&nbsp;and a few other ministers are said to have "adjusted" the $50 billion that the British National Crime Agency (NCA) gave to the government, according to a GeoNews report.

Additionally, it is alleged that the PTI leaders received illicit advantages in the form of more than 458 kanals of land in Mouza Bakrala, Sohawa, for the construction of Al Qadir University.

Pakistan's political turmoil continues to escalate as the crisis-hit nation woke up on Thursday to more destruction, debris, and roadblocks. The government deployed the military to quell riots as former prime minister Imran Khan was remanded in custody for eight days on fresh corruption charges after his dramatic arrest, prompting the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party's supporters to come on the streets and protest.&nbsp;

Amid the unrest, the Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari urged the PTI to "not make matters worse". He also called for an end to violent protests in the country. Bhutto said, "Their reaction is completely unjustified. It is violent and has created a situation in which serious conversations need to be had. But the only advice I can give to PTI is that what you have done is done, those who were involved will have to give answers."&nbsp;

He asked the PTI to "abide by the rule of law and Constitution". In a press conference in Karachi, he added, "Accept that you will engage with the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) as citizens and not as terrorists."&nbsp;

The protests have triggered panic situation nationwide, with common people reeling amid the worsening crisis. As quoted by the news agency Reuters, Zardad Khan, a resident of Peshawar, where a radio building was torched by protesters, said: "Protests are necessary but they must be peaceful. All this destruction should be avoided. The people getting injured or killed on both sides are our own people, our brothers. We should protest peacefully. It is in our own interest."&nbsp;

Authorities have arrested more than 1,600 miscreants in Punjab for vandalism and also took senior leaders of Khan's party into custody. The Islamabad police said that PTI leaders, including former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, who's vice chairman of PTI were arrested&nbsp;for "inciting violent protests".

Two other senior PTI leaders, Asad Umar and Fawad Chaudhry, were arrested on Wednesday. The party has challenged Khan's arrest in the Supreme Court.&nbsp;

A statement on Qureshi's Twitter profile quoted him as saying: "There is a very real propaganda campaign against PTI, attempting to position us as violent creators of terror. The nation must continue with peaceful protests wherever they can".&nbsp;

Pakistan political crisis: Govt deploys army to quell riots; PTI leaders, activists arrested

Pakistan has sought an Interpol red corner notice against Farhat Shahzadi, a close friend of Bushra Bibi — the wife of former prime minister Imran Khan — over money laundering charges.

Red corner notice, as per Interpol, is not an international arrest warrant, rather it is a request to law enforcement globally to "locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action."

As per the PTI news agency, Farhat Shahzadi, alias Farah Khan and Farah Gogi, left the country weeks before Imran Khan was ousted from power in April last year. Her departure from Pakistan came amidst allegations by the then-opposition that claimed she was involved in corruption.

Pakistan-based publication Dawn reports that in a letter to the Interpol director in Islamabad, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has sought the red corner notice against "fugitive Farhat Shahzadi in FIR 04/23 of FIA anti-money laundering circle in Lahore."

In its letter, the FIA said that it was investigating Farhat Shahzadi on charges of laundering millions of rupees.

"On fearing that her heinous crime is likely to be exposed, Farhat Shahzadi alias Farah Gogi escaped to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on April 3, 2022," alleges the agency.

"She has been declared as proclaimed offender by the court of Mr Ghulam Murtaza Virk on March 14, 2023, by the issuance of a proclamation order (warrant)," it further said.

The investigation agency has reportedly requested Interpol to escalate the process to get the approval of this request. They've urged Interpol to send the process to its headquarters in the French city of Lyon for the early issuance of the red notice.

Shahzadi is reportedly a close friend of Bushra Bibi, the third wife of PTI chief Imran Khan.&nbsp;

Once during the tenure of Usman Buzdar, who was appointed by Khan, PML-N chief organiser Maryam Nawaz Sharif had even called her Punjab's "real chief minister".

Several Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders, including some federal cabinet members, have been pushing the current government to allow the FIA to bring back Shahzadi to the country. They want to make Shahzadi face the cases filed against her.

According to Dawn, the FIA is also investigating Ahsan Jamil Gujjar, husband of Shahzadi, concerning the money laundering case.&nbsp;According to the report, it is believed that Shahzadi left UAE and is assumed to be living either with her husband in the US or in some other nation.

With elections set to be held in the country next year this alleged recording of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder has invited widespread criticism.

FirstPost reports that the call recording was apparently leaked by a local Pakistani Journalist named Syed Ali Haider. First shared on Youtube the audio is now also making the rounds on Twitter.

Reportedly a few Pakistani news portals have also claimed that it is an old recording and that the call was made from Pakistan Prime Minister's Office.

Pakistan's Election Commission has officially started the process to remove former Prime Minister Imran Khan from the post of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief.

A notice has been issued to him regarding the case after he was disqualified from holding the position in the aftermath of the Toshakhana case, the Dawn reported on Tuesday.

Imran was found guilty of buying gifts at a discounted price from the Toshakhana (state depository) and selling them for higher prices. According to PTI, the gifts included an expensive wristwatch, and he was also found guilty of "false statements and incorrect declaration."

While PTI officials have claimed that there is no legal basis for removing Imran from his position, the Commission has cited a 2018 judgement by a three-member Supreme Court bench. It said that a person disqualified “under Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution could not head a political party”.

The Constitution dictates that all gifts of value received by office holders need to be deposited in the Toshakhana for valuation. All gifts need to be reported and the full valuation will have to disclosed.

This was the same rule that resulted in Nawaz Sharif losing his position as the head of the PML-N after he was disqualified by the Supreme Court. Imran was one of the main figures who supported the action, and the anti-corruption issue helped him in becoming the Pakistan PM in 2018.

However, in the aftermath of various corruption charges, the Imran Khan lost the government after a defeat in the no-confidence vote.
