Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expecting to name Paul Pogba in the line-up for the first game of the new Premier League campaign against Chelsea next weekend, despite the Frenchman's overtures to leave the club in the close season.

Pogba said in June that he could seek a new challenge after three years at United, while his agent told The Times last month that the 26-year-old intends to leave the club amid reports linking him to Juventus and Real Madrid.

However, with a transfer having not materialised the midfielder, who joined United from Juventus in 2016 for a then-world record fee of 89.3 million pounds, could be around Old Trafford for a little while longer.

"Paul will probably be back early next week in training. It's not an injury, just some pain. He's not injured but I wasn't going to risk anything this weekend," Solskjaer told a news conference after his side's penalty shootout win over AC Milan in Cardiff.

"He should be okay (for Chelsea). I would hope so, anyway. I wasn't expecting Paul (at the airport). I spoke to him after training and he didn't feel right."

Pogba has endured a turbulent time at United, notably falling out with Solskjaer's predecessor Jose Mourinho.

However, he may be convinced by the ambition shown by the club to improve on a disappointing sixth place finish in the Premier League last season, 32 points behind champions Manchester City.

Following the acquisitions of full back Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace and young winger Daniel James from Swansea City, United are close to sealing a record 80-million pound deal for Leicester City defender Harry Maguire.

"Hopefully, the last little details will be in place and we can announce something very soon," the Norwegian coach said of the England centre back.

"Let's get the details over the line but he's played a few games over the summer so we'll just have to assess him, if and when (he is available for the Chelsea match)."

Solskjaer also said that Ashley Young would be the new club captain, taking over from Antonio Valencia who left after 10 years in Manchester to join LDU Quito in his native Ecuador last month.

Brighton &amp; Hove Albion have signed centre back Adam Webster on a four-year deal from Championship side Bristol City in a club-record deal, the Premier League team said on Saturday.

Financial details of the transfer were not disclosed but British media reported Brighton paid 20 million pounds ($24.31 million) to sign the 24-year-old defender.

"Adam is a player the club has been aware of for sometime, and someone we came up against last season at Swansea City," said new Brighton boss Graham Potter, who joined the south-coast club from Welsh side Swansea in May.

"He is a quality defender, comfortable on the ball, fits the profile of the type of player we want to bring to the club, and he was very keen to join us.

"He is still relatively young, but has good experience from the number of games he has played. Predominantly a centre-half, he can also play at right-back, and he will bring additional competition alongside our existing defensive options."

Webster played 44 league games for City last season, including 43 starts, and scored three goals.

The club's previous record deal was the 17 million pounds paid for Iran forward Alireza Jahanbakhsh last year.

Brighton, who escaped relegation last season when they finished 17th, begin the new campaign at Watford on Aug. 10.

Pep Guardiola has urged Manchester City to prepare for the "incredible challenge" of battling Liverpool for the Premier League title by landing an early blow against their rivals in Sunday's Community Shield.

Guardiola's side pipped Liverpool to the Premier League by one point last season after a thrilling title race went down to the last day.

The two clubs renew their growing rivalry when they meet at Wembley in the annual curtain-raiser to the English top-flight season this weekend.

While City won an unprecedented English treble of Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup last term, and are the bookmakers' favourites to win the title for a third successive year, Guardiola is well aware of the challenge likely to be posed by Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp's men lost only once in the league last season -- at City -- and erased the frustration of failing to catch Guardiola's team by beating Tottenham to win the club's sixth European Cup in June.

Despite a spat between the pair this week when Guardiola hit back at Klopp's jibe over City's big spending on transfers in recent years, the Spaniard remains a huge admirer of the Liverpool boss and the team he has built at Anfield.

"He inspires me in many things. He is a class manager, a top manager. He's so good and it is an incredible challenge for me every time I face his teams," Guardiola said.

Guardiola's irritation at Klopp's suggestion that City are one of a handful of clubs who live in a transfer "fantasy land" lit the fuse on what promises to be a fascinating 10-month battle for supremacy between City and Liverpool.

With City yet to win the Champions League and Liverpool without an English title since 1990, it is possible they would gladly settle for a trophy-swap this season.

But Guardiola knows Community Shield holders City could become the first team to win three consecutive Premier League titles since Manchester United between 2006 and 2009, so he won't settle for only targeting European glory.

"We won almost every trophy; not all of them. It was quite remarkable," he said of last season.

"We start from zero now – we start again – but we are ready to accept the challenge."

'There are no doubts'

Twelve months ago Guardiola warned of a need to guard against complacency after City's record 100-point haul in 2017-18.

But this year he is taking a softer approach after being impressed with his players' maturity under intense pressure from Liverpool.

"We will be nicer this season. These players convinced me with what they did last season. There are no doubts," said Guardiola, who may leave Ederson, Riyad Mahrez, Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus on the bench after their returns from international duty.

"At the end of last season I didn't know how well we'd handle our success and I think it was incredible what they did last after 100 points. The target is to keep improving."

For Liverpool, the glamour friendly represents a chance to fine-tune their preparations after an uneven pre-season.

Three defeats and some lethargic displays sparked fears that Liverpool were suffering a Champions League hangover.

Sadio Mane is still resting after the Africa Cup of Nations, but with Roberto Firmino, Alisson Becker and Mohamed Salah back in the fold after international commitments, Klopp expects a more cohesive display at Wembley.

"When you are tired, you are tired, and it's quite difficult to then play your best football. Now it's getting better. The quality of the boys who came back, of course it helps," said Klopp, whose club last won the Community Shield in 2006.

"Because the training was on such a high-intensity level in the games sometimes we were really done.

"Unfortunately, we play in public so everybody could see that. But the Lyon game helped. We were not in doubt about that but it's nice to get the proof as well."

Manchester United have reached an agreement with Leicester City to sign centre back Harry Maguire with a transfer fee of £80 million ($96.96 million) agreed, British media reports said on Friday.

Should the deal go through, Maguire will become the most expensive defender in the world, surpassing the £75 million Liverpool paid Southampton for Virgil van Dijk last year.

Maguire would also become the Old Trafford club's second most expensive recruit after midfielder Paul Pogba who was signed for a then world-record 89 million pounds from Juventus in 2016.

The 26-year-old England international, who signed a contract extension until 2023 with Leicester last year, played 31 times in the league last season and also scored three goals.

Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers had said that the 2016 league champions had rejected two bids last month for their defender because they did not meet the valuation of the club.

"The club hasn't changed its stance in terms of the valuation for the player," Rodgers told BBC on Thursday.

"I'm obviously relaxed with it. It is what it is. The player has been first class with his attitude in his training."

Manchester United agree record deal to sign Harry Maguire from Leicester: Reports

Arsenal have signed forward Nicolas Pepe from French club Lille for a club-record fee, the Premier League side said on Thursday.

Financial details of the transfer were not revealed but British media reported it was around 72 million pounds ($87.39 million), eclipsing the 56 million pounds paid to Borussia Dortmund for striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang last year.

"Nicolas is a highly-rated and talented winger who was wanted by many of the top teams in Europe," Arsenal manager Unai Emery said in a statement.&nbsp;

"Signing a top-class winger has been one of our key objectives in this transfer window and I'm delighted he's joining.

"He will add pace, power and creativity, with the aim of bringing more goals to our team."

The 24-year-old Ivory Coast international signed a five-year deal and will wear the number 19 shirt at the London club.

Pepe, who was also linked with many European clubs in the close season, scored 22 goals in Ligue 1 last season -- second only to Paris St Germain's Kylian Mbappe who scored 33 goals -- and also grabbed 11 assists.

"Being here is very emotional because it has not been easy for me," said Pepe. "I have come a long way and struggled a lot and so signing for this great club is a big reward."

Pepe is Arsenal's fourth recruit of the close season after the club signed Brazilian winger Gabriel Martinelli, midfielder Dani Ceballos on loan from Real Madrid and centre back William Saliba, who has been loaned back to St Etienne for the season.

Arsenal, who finished fifth last season, play a friendly against Barcelona on Sunday before they begin the new league campaign with a trip to Newcastle United on Aug. 11.

The English Football Association has increased its mandatory minimum ban for first-time offenders found guilty of discriminatory behaviour to six matches from five ahead of the 2019-2020 season.

The move follows an annual report from British anti discriminatory body Kick It Out that showed a 43 percent rise in reports of racist abuse in English football last season.

Chelsea banned a supporter for life last week for racially abusing winger Raheem Sterling during last season's Premier League home match against Manchester City.

World soccer governing body FIFA doubled its minimum ban for racism to 10 games last month as soccer's authorities attempt to clamp down after a number of high profile incidents in domestic and international football.

The FA's six-game ban can be increased "depending on any additional aggravating factors" and it is also in talks with various stakeholders about how best to combat discrimination on and off the pitch.

"As part of this, The FA is reviewing what the minimum match-based suspension for proven cases of discrimination should be to ensure the deterrent in place is appropriate and effective," the FA said in a statement.

The FA also revealed it had given match officials the authority to show managers and backroom staff yellow and red cards, representing cautions and dismissals, respectively.

Any member of a team's technical staff who accumulates four yellow cards during the season will receive an automatic one game touchline ban, while eight yellows will earn the offender a two match suspension.

An individual who accrues 16 yellows during the season will be charged with misconduct and have to face an independent regulatory commission.

Ahead of Manchester City's clash against J-League outfit Yokohama F-Marinos, City's manager <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=Pep+Guardiola">Pep Guardiola</a> praised young midfielder Phil Foden and hailed him as the "most talented player" he has ever seen.&nbsp;

Since making his debut in 2017, the 19-year-old has scored seven goals so far. He is expected to feature heavily in the upcoming season and might prove to be a vital cog for the team.&nbsp;

"He is the most, most, most talented player I have ever seen in my career as a football player and manager. He has everything to become one of the best players, not just in England," said Guardiola.&nbsp;

"His only problem is that sometimes his manager doesn't put him in the starting XI. Hopefully, in the future, he can improve. He deserves all the minutes but he knows what team he plays for and with his competitors, it isn't easy," Guardiola added.&nbsp;

"He knows I appreciate him. I'm here to help him as much as possible to become what he is and I am pretty sure both of us will get it," he further added.&nbsp;

Guardiola against praised Foden after City's 3-1 win over Yokohama F-Marinos on Saturday.&nbsp;

He insisted that Foden needed more time. "Phil (Foden) trained in, I think, two training sessions. So, no more than that, so it was one month off and two training sessions so he needed more time," said City's coach.&nbsp;

"His position is more central in the middle, but he can play wide because he has the ability of one-against-one, help a lot in that side to close it to defend, so that's why I am so, yeah, I'm satisfied, because I know his level so, his quality, his receptions, the vision that he has, his commitment defensively, so, but it's good," Pep added.&nbsp;

"In two games, I didn't expect (to) give him minutes and he took these minutes and that is good for, for you know, to take the best condition as possible."&nbsp;

The 22-year-old centre back is Wolves' first signing of the close season and arrives at Molineux stadium having captained Spain to the under-21 European Championship title last month. Former Real Zaragoza player Vallejo has made a total of 19 appearances in all competitions for Madrid and scored his first La Liga goal against Villarreal in May. He could make his Wolves debut on Thursday against Northern Ireland's Crusaders FC in the return leg of a Europa League second qualifying round tie. Wolves won the first leg 2-0. Nuno Espirito Santo's side begin their Premier League campaign against Leicester City on August 11.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says he does not expect to make many, if any, new signings before the transfer window closes.

The Premier League champions have made one big-money signing in the close season, brining in Rodrigo Hernandez Cascante, better known as 'Rodri', from Atletico Madrid for a club-record €70 million ($79 million).

Speaking in Yokohama on the club’s pre-season tour of Asia, Guardiola said he was happy with his current title-winning squad.

“Not many,” the Spaniard said on Friday, when asked if any more transfer deals can be expected.

“The transfer market is so difficult and we are good enough. Maybe zero, one or one and a half (transfers). We will see.”

One player Guardiola may have to replace if Bayern Munich get their way is German winger Leroy Sane.

Bayern have made it clear they would like to take the 23-year-old to Bavaria, but Guardiola has stated his resolve to keep Sane in England.

Despite Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge suggesting earlier this week that the City manager "doesn't know everything that goes on in his club," Guardiola refused to be drawn into a war of words with his former side.

“I love Bayern Munich. It is part of my life. So the people working there, I appreciate a lot,” said Guardiola, who won three league titles with the German club.

“They gave me an incredible opportunity to work in Germany at this historical club. I have real, real friends out there.

“Football is what it is. Sometimes you know I say things the people on the opposite side don’t like, but I know that they always do it with good intentions.”

Pep Guardiola plays down prospect of more Manchester City signings before deadline

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino apologised to Manchester United for his team's robust tackling in a 2-1 pre-season defeat on Thursday, but said their Premier League rivals were not blameless in the feisty encounter in Shanghai.

United youth product Angel Gomes sealed victory in the 81st minute after Spurs' Lucas Moura cancelled out Anthony Martial's first-half opener but a number of tough tackles from both teams threatened to overshadow the pre-season contest.&nbsp;

Moussa Sissoko risked being dismissed for a challenge and subsequent stamp on Daniel James that left the United winger writhing in pain while Dele Alli and United's Andreas Pereira were also guilty of poor tackles.

"I apologise to United on behalf of our players. I expect the same because there was some action in the second half that they made to us," Pochettino told reporters.

"I was a bit annoyed about some situations ... because you can arrive late and something can happen. Sometimes you need to be aggressive, play with passion but the focus is on building fitness and developing the way we want to play."

Pochettino was concerned that his players would pick up injuries in a heated clash where United defender Eric Bailly hurt his knee when he tried to block Son Heung-min.

"Of course I was worried ... Bailly got injured and I'm sorry for that ... when players start to build their fitness and fight for their place, when something happens in pre season it's always tough," the Argentine added.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said the prognosis for Bailly, who has been plagued by injuries in his time at Old Trafford, did not look encouraging.

"It seems that he's twisted his knee so we have to do some scans and checks on him. At first sight, it doesn't look great but let's see how it goes," the Norwegian told the club's television channel MUTV.

However, Solskjaer said he had no problems with the tackles his players faced.

"It's a competitive sport and we're preparing for the league. There was no tippy-toe football ... we didn't just receive. We gave as well. I thought it was a good game."

Football's world governing body FIFA has called on the game's authorities around the world to implement a "zero-tolerance" policy against racism.

In a letter seen by AFP, FIFA secretary general Fatma Samoura pressed for everyone associated with the game to adopt the organisation's three-point procedure.&nbsp;

"FIFA now urges all member associations, leagues, clubs and disciplinary bodies to introduce the three-step procedure in their domestic competitions, to pursue a zero-tolerance policy towards racist and discriminatory incidents in football, and to severely punish such behaviour," Samoura wrote in the letter.

The first step of the procedure, which FIFA introduced into its competitions at the 2017 Confederations Cup, involves the referee stopping a match to request a public announcement to call for any racist behaviour to cease.

That will be followed by the referee suspending the match until it stops, and finally, abandoning the match altogether.

FIFA said earlier in July that it wanted teams to forfeit matches if their supporters were deemed to be guilty of racist behaviour.&nbsp;

A report released by campaign group Kick It Out on Wednesday said reported incidents of racist abuse in English football rose by 43 percent in the 2018/19 season.

A number of incidents of racist abuse tarnished matches across Europe last season.

Montenegro fans marred England's Euro 2020 qualifier by abusing Danny Rose, Raheem Sterling and Callum Hudson-Odoi.

Manchester City winger Sterling was also the victim of alleged racist abuse in a match at Chelsea and Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had a banana skin thrown at him by a Tottenham fan.

Pep Guardiola made an impassioned defence of Manchester City and his players after criticism in China's state media over his club's "arrogance" during their stopover in Nanjing and Shanghai for last week's Premier League Asia Trophy.

The Premier League champions, who played in the four-team tournament with Newcastle United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United, were lambasted in an editorial in official news agency Xinhua, which claimed Guardiola and his players "lacked enthusiasm" during their five-day stint in China.

Speaking in Hong Kong, where City will face local side Kitchee on Wednesday evening, the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach said the club had had a positive experience so far during their Asian tour.

"I should say that I don't agree and I should say that it's false," said Guardiola. "To make a statement like this they have to know exactly what is happening within our club.

"The players had an incredible time in Shanghai. They were committed in all the commercials they have to do with the people here in China. The people from the hotel, we take care of all of them with signatures, with pictures. All the people asking something, we are ready to do that.

"So I know we come here (and) it's a unique experience for us. It's not easy to come during the season, to come to Asia, a new culture and to go to the restaurants and know the people. It's amazing to travel and know other people.

"I don't understand how the people can say that. Maybe this one journalist is a little bit upset, I don't know why. But it's far away from what is the reality."

'Commercial Obligation'

The article on Xinhua's English language website accused City, who are part-owned by the Chinese Media Capital consortium, of lack of engagement with local fans and that staff had adopted a dismissive attitude towards the country's media.

"For the Premier League champions, their appearance in China was nothing more than a commercial obligation, and their lack of enthusiasm and the indifferent treatment of their hosts stands in stark contrast to representatives of other clubs," the article stated.

"For Manchester City, they saw their recent success as a reason not to treat Chinese and foreigners with the same respect. Above all, it was an orientalist expectation on display by the Manchester City press relations staff&nbsp;that Chinese media would operate as an extension of their PR department, rather than as serious football journalists.

"An attitude of arrogance and the belief that they were the main attraction to the Premier League Asia Trophy was misplaced and stood in direct contrast to the other clubs."

While Guardiola poured scorn on those claims, he admitted the Abu Dhabi-owned outfit lack the experience of other European clubs in relation to overseas tours but that he expected City to return to China in the future.

"For our club, there's not a huge experience to go abroad, to go to other countries because we are not Manchester United or Liverpool or Bayern Munich who for a long, long time are travelling on these kind of tours," he said.

"It's a new experience every season. It will help on the pitch what we did last season and of course off the pitch, to show the people how good a team we are and how amazing a club we are and how we are trying to be better every season.

"That's why I'm so proud of what they have done. All the marketing department, all the people who have built this tour and I'm pretty sure, maybe not next season but in two years we are going to come back to China when the club decides to come."

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, reported to be on the verge of agreeing a six-year contract extension, has said he would welcome being captain of the Premier League club.

De Gea, 28, has long been linked with a move away from Old Trafford but said he wanted to help the team return to the summit of English soccer at a supporters' event in Singapore.

United's previous captain Antonio Valencia left at the end of last season and De Gea is one of several players in the frame to replace him along with Ashley Young, Juan Mata, Chris Smalling and Paul Pogba.

"I've been captain for some games. Of course it is amazing to be captain of a club like Manchester United and defend this badge," De Gea said. "It's amazing, so of course I'll be really, really happy to captain.

"It's my ninth season, I feel like one of the most experienced players. We have to improve a lot.

"We are Manchester United, we need to fight for trophies. When you put on this badge, that's what it means — fight for everything, give your best and bring the team again to the top."

David De Gea keen to captain Manchester United as keeper nears new deal

Alejandro Pozo delivered the late dagger in 10-man Sevilla's 2-1 friendly win over Liverpool in Boston Sunday, a defeat made worse for the European champions when they saw Yasser Larouci stretchered off.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was furious at Joris Gagnon's outrageous kick at an on-rushing Larouci in the 76th minute. Gnagnon was shown a straight red card after sweeping one of the Frenchman's legs out from underneath him, toppling him to the pitch where his head bounced hard on the ground.

"(It's) much too early in the season to create headlines with saying the things I think about the situation," Klopp said at his post-match press conference, where he added that it appeared that the 18-year-old Larouci was "lucky" in terms of avoiding serious injury.

"But of course, how it always is with these things we have to wait a little bit. I don’t know 100 percent. It looks like he was lucky but I only spoke quickly to the Doc and that's what he said, but we have to see."

Even with the La Liga outfit reduced to 10 men, Liverpool were unable find a way ahead, and Pozo sealed it in the 90th minute as he smoothly collected a pass from Munir El Haddadi, rounded Liverpool keeper Simon Mignolet and knocked the winner into an unguarded net.

Sevilla had enjoyed by far the majority of scoring chances on a sweltering evening at Fenway Park -- home of the World Series Champion Boston Red Sox. Both Liverpool and the Red Sox are owned by groups led by John W&nbsp;Henry.

Players were granted water breaks in the hot, humid conditions, and even the pitch created on the baseball diamond received extra water during the match.

The pro-Liverpool crowd weren't treated to many of the club's stars as Brazilian internationals Roberto Firmino and Alisson were both absent for the Reds following their Copa America campaign along with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, both missing due to the African Cup of Nations.

As in a 3-2 defeat to Borussia Dortmund on Friday in Indiana, there was some shaky defending from Liverpool.

Nolito's powerful shot in the 37th minute past Liverpool starting goalkeeper Andy Lonergan -- who was at Middlesbrough last season -- was Sevilla's reward after a half-hour of pressure.

It needed a sprawling save from Lonergan in the 13th minute to deny Luuk de Jong after Liverpool lost possession in their own territory and de Jong was just wide with a header in the 23rd.

'Not too cool'

Liverpool's equalizer came off a scrappy set piece as Trent Alexander-Arnold's corner was kept alive by Nat Phillips, the ball falling to an unmarked Divock Origi who swept in from close range in the 44th.

Both teams made wholesale changes at halftime, but even a match that was just one more step in both team's pre-season preparations there was nothing laid back about Sevilla.

A foul was called on Ever Banega for a hard tackle in the 12th minute and when he slammed the ball to the ground in protest he was shown a yellow card.

Liverpool midfielder Harry Wilson took a smack to the face just before halftime -- an infraction that paled in comparison to that of Gnagnon -- who was arguing with the referee as Larouci received treatment.

"Harry got a knock on his jaw and a finger in his eye, so not too cool," Klopp said. "He should be OK as well but couldn’t carry on as well."

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba is a positive influence in the dressing room and must extend his stay at the club to help bring trophies back to Old Trafford, teammate Juan Mata said.

Pogba said last month that he could seek a new challenge after three years at United, while his agent recently told The Times that the 26-year-old intends to leave the club amid reports linking him to Juventus and Real Madrid.

However, Mata wants Pogba's future to include United winning "big trophies" in 2019-20 campaign, having failed to lift a major trophy since their Europa League triumph in May 2017.

"We all know Paul and he is a fantastic midfielder, and a very good guy, very positive, and a good influence for everyone," Spanish midfielder Mata told Sky Sports.

"As a teammate and a friend I would like him to stay and be happy because he is a very good player for us.

"We know we have to do better than last season. This club has won more trophies than any other club in England. We want to win big trophies again."

In Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first full season as United manager, the club will be aiming to improve on last term's sixth-placed finish in the Premier League, when they ended up 32 points behind champions and local rivals Manchester City.

Mata agreed a contract extension at United last month, and fellow Spaniard, goalkeeper David de Gea, is also closing in on a new long-term deal, according to reports in the British media.

"David is the best or one of the best goalkeepers in the world, for sure," Mata said.

"He is one of my best friends, so I want him to stay. On a professional level, it will be great for us if he stays because he will give us many points over the next seasons."

We want to win big trophies again." In Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first full season as United manager, the club will be aiming to improve on last term's sixth-placed finish in the Premier League, when they ended up 32 points behind champions and local rivals Manchester City. On a professional level, it will be great for us if he stays because he will give us many points over the next seasons." United open their 2019-20 league campaign against Chelsea on Aug. 11.

Danish internationals Thomas Delaney and Jacob Bruun Larsen scored second half goals as Borussia Dortmund handed Liverpool a 3-2 defeat in the opening game of the Premier League giants pre-season US tour on Friday.

In sweltering heat at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Indiana, Bundesliga side Dortmund punished a rusty defensive display from the European champions, who were missing several star players.

Brazilian internationals Roberto Firmino and Alisson were both absent for the Reds following their Copa America campaign along with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, both missing due to the African Cup of Nations.

Liverpool manager <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/jurgen-klopp-committed-to-liverpool-as-us-tour-kicks-off-237052">Jurgen Klopp</a> opted for a &nbsp;youthful starting line-up against his former club before making 10 changes in the second half.

"It was a very difficult game for both teams," Klopp said afterwards. "I saw a lot of good things, and a lot of good individual performances, but obviously not enough.

"We're obviously not anywhere near where we want to be," he added, referring to the goals his team conceded.

Dortmund took the lead after only three minutes when Paco Alcacer capitalised on some hesitant defending from Liverpool defender Nathaniel Clyne to rifle home from close range.

Liverpool soon began to carve out openings of their own however, and the lively Ryan Kent and Harry Wilson always looked threatening.

Kent almost equalised in the 10th minute after a driving run by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Oxlade-Chamberlain's pass to the back post was perfectly weighted but Kent's shot was blocked after a superb diving save from Dortmund goalkeeper Martin Hitz.

Hitz needed to be alert soon afterwards, when a fine through ball by James Milner released Wilson.

Wilson latched onto the pass and shot for goal, but Hitz had read the danger, advancing off his line to save.

Liverpool finally drew level with a cleverly worked goal in the 35th minute.

Again, Kent and Wilson were involved.&nbsp;

Fabinho's pass into the area was brilliantly dummied by Kent into the path of Wilson, who calmly stroked home the finish.

But despite the bright opening 45 minutes, Liverpool were soon trailing again early in the second half as Dortmund once more seized on sloppy defensive play to score two quick goals.

Delaney, one of nine Dortmund changes made at half-time, made it 2-1 in the 53rd minute after Liverpool's defence were caught square.

Six minutes later Bruun Larsen fired Dortmund into a 3-1 lead after burying Marius Wolf's cutback into the bottom corner.

That goal was the cue for Klopp to make wholesale substitutions of his own, removing all 10 outfield players on the one hour mark.

A Rhian Brewster penalty in the 75th minute after Ben Woodburn was brought down cut Dortmund's lead to a single goal.

But Liverpool were unable to find an equaliser in the closing stages.

Teenage forward Mason Greenwood rifled home in the 75th minute to give a dominant Manchester United a 1-0 victory against Inter Milan in the International Champions Cup on Saturday.

The 17-year-old turned sharply inside the box before firing into the far corner after Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic was only able to parry Ashley Young's whipped free kick.

Greenwood almost got a second goal minutes later when he flicked a looping finish onto the top of the crossbar following great work by teenage Dutch winger Tahith Chong.

Earlier, Nemanja Matic saw his header from a corner come back off the post.

A poor Inter Milan rarely troubled David de Gea's goal in a sluggish affair played in searing heat and humidity.

Rui Patricio saved three penalties as Wolverhampton Wanderers defeated Premier League champions Manchester City to claim the Premier League Asia Trophy 3-2 in a penalty shootout in Shanghai on Saturday.

The Portuguese goalkeeper kept out spot kicks from Ilkay Gundogan, David Silva and Lukas Nmecha as Nuno Espirto Santo's Wolves side won the four-team pre-season tournament, which also featured Newcastle United and West Ham United, after the game was goalless at the end of 90 minutes.

The match at Hongkou Stadium was a frustrating tale of missed penalties for Pep Guardiola's English champions as Raheem Sterling was also off target from the spot during regulation time.

The England international was in electric form in the opening exchanges but failed to cap a fine start with a goal when he fired over the bar from the penalty spot just before the midway point of the first half.

Patricio was kept busy in the Wolves goal, with the keeper called upon to make a routine save from Sterling with less than two minutes on the clock before pulling off a reflex save to keep out Aymeric Laporte's close-range attempt.

Referee Martin Atkinson awarded City a penalty 20 minutes into the game when Leroy Sane was hauled down by the combined efforts of Conor Coady and Morgan Gibbs-White, only for Sterling to send his spot kick high and wide.

Wolves eventually broke out of the City stranglehold to put some pressure on the Premier League champions' goal as the half wore on but it was Guardiola's side who always looked the more likely to score.

Patricio denied City again 13 minutes from the end, this time making a flying save to ensure substitute Silva's free kick did not curl inside his left post.

Wolves held out despite City dominating possession, clinging on for a scoreless draw to take the game into a penalty shootout where Patricio performed more heroics.

Earlier in the day, Yoshinori Muto gave Steve Bruce a winning start to life as Newcastle United head coach when the Japan international scored the only goal of the third-place playoff against West Ham United.

Bruce, who was appointed as Rafael Benitez's replacement earlier in the week, watched from the stands as the unmarked Muto flicked home a Jamie Sherry cross 11 minutes before halftime to give Newcastle the win.

Premier League interim chief executive Richard Masters admits VAR is certain to cause "controversy" when the technology makes its English top-flight debut in the forthcoming season.

The video referee system will be used for the first time in the Premier League after its introduction was delayed for a year to allow time to develop the system.

VAR has been used in England in the FA Cup and League Cup, as well as in numerous other foreign leagues and tournaments including the Champions League.

It hasn't been a huge success, with complaints from managers and fans about the slowness of the system and mistakes made by the officials.&nbsp;

"I have no doubt it will create some controversy because it is about the big decisions but we are prepared for that," Masters said.

"We have spent two years working up to this point, and we were committed to doing it in our heads for two years.

"We have been training and testing and making sure when it happens, particularly on Saturday afternoons when we have got multiple matches going on, that we have a number of VARs trained. We feel that is done and we are ready to launch it."

Masters is adamant the Premier League have looked at ways to ensure VAR operates effectively, taking lessons from the initial use of the system elsewhere.

He hopes there will be fewer stoppages for referees to consult monitors than seen during other events such as the Champions League last season or the recent Women's World Cup.

"I think fans want to see those clear and obvious mistakes changed and put right," Masters said in China, where he has been attending the Premier League's pre-season Asia Trophy.

"But they don't want to see the Premier League or English football interrupted, or the pace of the game changed.

"I think the only difference you might see is the referees using the referee review area a bit more sparingly and relying more on the VAR for the more subjective decisions.

"But we are putting something new into the Premier League and if it needs to be refined or improved or tweaked we will look at it when the moment arises.&nbsp;

"We've got to let it happen first and keep an open mind about whether it is really working."

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said he was encouraged by the performance of the European champions on Saturday despite their defeat by his former side Borussia Dortmund who are further ahead in pre-season preparations.

Goals from Harry Wilson and Rhian Brewster were cancelled out by Dortmund's Paco Alcacer, Thomas Delaney and Jacob Bruun Larsen as Liverpool were beaten 3-2 in stifling conditions at the Notre Dame stadium in Indiana.

"I don't like what I see in a game in pre-season very often but there is always a reason for it. I'm not over the moon with our performance but I know there is lots to come," Klopp told a news conference.

The defeat comes on the back of a 6-0 victory over Tranmere Rovers and a 3-1 win over Bradford City but Klopp said he had "learned nothing" from the latest result with several senior players getting their first taste of pre-season action.

Liverpool were also without their first-choice attacking trio of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino who are yet to return following national duty.

"You could see that Dortmund are a step further in their preparations but there was a lot of good things for us," the German added.

"How we conceded goals was a lack of organisation, but it is difficult to have that at this stage... I learned nothing... it was a tough night for both teams, it was really warm."

Liverpool manager <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=Jurgen+Klopp">Jurgen Klopp</a> said Thursday he expects to remain at Anfield for at least three more years as the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/champions-manchester-city-to-kick-off-premier-league-season-at-west-ham-226813">Premier League</a> giants prepare to kick off their pre-season tour to North America.

Klopp, who successfully guided Liverpool to a sixth Champions League crown last month, was taken aback when asked to comment on reports suggesting he may leave the club when his current contract expires in 2022.

"Wow! I don't think a lot of people get asked that question three years before the contract is expiring," Klopp said.

"We will see. Why should we think about this? At least three years - that's the answer. At least three years."

Media reported last month that Klopp was pondering a sabbatical when his Liverpool contract ends. Agent Mark Kosicke meanwhile has hinted that Klopp may be interested in taking over as coach of the German national team.

Klopp however was solely focused on preparations for the coming season on Thursday as the Reds begin a three-game US tour that starts on Friday against Borussia Dortmund in South Bend, Indiana.

"I'm excited about having the first proper test," said Klopp, who added that he is not overly concerned by results during the tour.

"So far, so good but there is a lot of work to do," said Klopp. "We played at a specific level last year which should be the basis for what we expect from ourselves for next season.

"It's not about results, it’s about performance and there is still space for improvement and that's what we are working on. We know that."

Liverpool's preparations have been disrupted by the international football calendar.

Goalkeeper Alisson and forward Roberto Firmino will only join the squad later in the pre-season following their Copa America campaign with Brazil, while striker Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane are also absent due to African Cup of Nations commitments with Egypt and Senegal.

"It's a slightly different situation to last year; players coming back late, we had a shorter holiday than pretty much all the other teams because the Champions League final was three weeks after the season ended," he said.

"So that's the situation but we knew that, we planned that. It still makes it a bit more difficult than in other pre-seasons maybe, but that’s all.

Klopp meanwhile said Liverpool were girding themselves for another daunting title chase with Manchester City, who pipped them to the Premier League crown on the final day of the season.

However Klopp said he expected other teams to improve.

"It would be great if we could be around Man City again because that’s the only possibility to have to pass them because it is already clear they are the big favourite again," Klopp said.

"All the teams will start again: there is no duel with City and Liverpool and all the rest are watching us. That's not how the Premier League is, all of these games are so difficult to play.

"What we did last year, we were really rock solid in all; we were difficult to play, difficult to outplay, in general we always created chances, we were strong in a lot of departments, didn’t get nervous in difficult situations in a game, could increase pressure in different situations on the other teams."

Manchester United manager <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/watch-manchester-uniteds-boss-ole-gunnar-solskjaer-plays-cricket-at-australias-waca-237107">Ole Gunnar Solskjaer</a> said Romelu Lukaku was not fit to play against Inter Milan in Singapore on Saturday, as the Italian side reiterated their desire to lure the striker to Serie A.&nbsp;

Speaking to media on Friday ahead of the match at Singapore's National Stadium in the International Champions Cup, Solskjaer said,&nbsp;"He is not fit, so he won't be able to play."&nbsp;

Asked if Lukaku would still be a United player at the start of the season, he added,&nbsp;"I don't have any updates."&nbsp;

Lukaku is yet to feature on the pre-season trip to Australia, Singapore and China after taking a knock in training earlier this week.&nbsp;

The Belgium international, who joined United two years ago, has been targeted by Inter Milan, but talks between the two clubs have stalled recently, according to British media reports.&nbsp;

Inter Milan coach Antonio Conte, who also spoke to media on Friday, did not hide his desire to secure a deal for Lukaku.&nbsp;

"I like this player and I consider him an important player for us to have a good improvement. We will see what will happen but now, for sure, Lukaku is a United player," Conte said.

Solskjaer was also pressed on the focus and form of midfielder Paul Pogba, who joined United from Juventus in 2016 for a then-world record fee of £89.3 million ($110.83 million) and has been linked with a move away from the club.

"I'm looking to get all the players back to the form that we were on when I first came in. It's not about just Paul Pogba getting back to that form. It's every one of us," Solskjaer said.

"Everyone has been spot on pre-season and the games they've played. When they are out on the pitch, I can't fault anyone. When we have got meetings, they are more proactive...I've been very encouraged."

United have pledged to invest in their squad in the close-season following a disappointing sixth-placed finish in the Premier League, 32 points behind champions Manchester City.

They have so far signed defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace and Wales winger Daniel James from Championship side Swansea City. Solskjaer said the club is working on "one or two" more targets before the transfer window closes.

Solskjaer has already said the team would need a "miraculous season" to mount a challenge in the next campaign because of how much their rivals have improved.
