Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne has no problem with Video Assistant Referees (VAR) in the Premier League but said he was an "old school" player who preferred matches to flow without too many interruptions.

Champions City had a late goal from striker Gabriel Jesus ruled out for handball by a VAR review as they drew 2-2 at home to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

VAR, making its Premier League debut this season, has been used in a number of high-profile competitions in recent months, but has received mixed reviews from players and coaches as well as frustrating fans.

"It feels weird to have the last-minute goal disallowed but we just have to accept it," De Bruyne told the BBC.

"I'm old school. I love the flow of the game and the enthusiasm. But if we want to get the game better, I'm fine with it.

"I have no issue with the rule -- the rule is the rule -- but it should be looked at because that situation is crazy."

Jesus also had a goal disallowed by VAR in last weekend's 5-0 win over West Ham United and the Brazilian forward expressed his frustration after Saturday's match in a heated exchange with the on-field officials.

It was all too familiar for City who were knocked out of the Champions League in April by Tottenham when they had a late "goal" from Raheem Sterling, that would have been the winner, ruled out by VAR.

Despite the disappointment of their first league home game without victory in nearly eight months, De Bruyne said City could be pleased with their effort.

"Everybody is proud with the way we performed -- Spurs got two goals but they only had two chances so they were really clinical," the Belgian added.

"To play at this level against a team like Tottenham is really good for the rest of the season."

Kevin De Bruyne prefers old school but OK with VAR

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp laughed off stand-in goalkeeper Adrian's mistake in Saturday's 2-1 Premier League victory over Southampton, joking that the howler was a "goalie thing" at the Merseyside club.

After forwards Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino put Liverpool 2-0 ahead, new signing Adrian gifted Southampton a lifeline with a poor clearance that rebounded off Danny Ings and into the net.

But Klopp made light of the incident, comparing it to an error by his first-choice goalkeeper Alisson during a win over Leicester City last season.

Asked by reporters if he had spoken to Adrian, Klopp said: "Yes: 'you finally arrived, welcome.'

"Ali did the same... it's a goalie thing at Liverpool, no problem with that as long as we win the games. All good."

Adrian, who was deployed after Allisson suffered a long-term injury against Norwich, had been passed fit for the match after sustaining a freak injury while celebrating their midweek Super Cup victory over Chelsea.

"Adrian had a swollen ankle and we played too many balls back to him in that period. I was happy with everything he did, all the saves, all that stuff," Klopp added.

"The other players have to then feel more the responsibility for the build-up and cannot give all the balls back to him and hope the painkillers still help.

"I don't think the goal was because of that, but a few other balls were. He's completely good with his feet."

Liverpool's Klopp makes light of Adrian howler

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola bemoaned a sense of deja vu as his side saw a late winner against Tottenham ruled out by VAR for the second time in four months as Saturday's Premier League clash ended 2-2.

Spurs won a thrilling Champions League quarter-final tie between the sides on away goals in April when Raheem Sterling had an injury-time strike ruled out by VAR.

And City were denied once more when Gabriel Jesus saw a stoppage-time winner disallowed on review for a handball by Aymeric Laporte.

"Deja vu. It was the same," said Guardiola. (The) last action we score a goal, VAR disallowed it. What should I say? It's the second time, it's tough."

Guardiola was angered by the inconsistent use of the technology as City were not awarded a penalty in the first-half when Rodri was hauled to the floor by Erik Lamela.

"It was incredible it wasn't a penalty in the first-half, but VAR said it wasn't and then at the end they did."

City twice led through Sterling and Sergio Aguero, but just like in last season's European clash between the sides, the hosts were susceptible on the counter-attack and at set-pieces.

Lamela's long-range effort briefly brought Spurs level in the first-half and substitute Lucas Moura equalised with his first touch 11 minutes into the second period as Mauricio Pochettino's men scored with their only two shots on target.

A share of the points sees both sides fall two points behind Liverpool just two games into the new season, but on this evidence another shootout between City and Liverpool for the title looks likely as Tottenham struggled to cope with Guardiola's men, who had 30 shots on goal.

"Better than that I don't know if we are able to reach it," added Guardiola. "We would like to win because the guys deserve it, but football sometimes is like this."

Sterling continued his stunning early-season form by opening the scoring with a fine header from a delightful cross by Kevin de Bruyne.

City had been utterly dominant for the first quarter of the match, but were hit with a sucker punch just three minutes after going in front.

Lamela was afforded acres of space inside the City half and took advantage of poor position by Ederson to curl home an equaliser from well outside the box.

The goal briefly gave Spurs the belief Pochettino had talked of before the game that they can push City and Liverpool for a three-way title race this season.

However, that quickly evaporated as the hosts took control again thanks to another sensational De Bruyne assist as this time Aguero converted the Belgian's low cross.

But Pochettino blamed the uncertainty still surrounding the futures of Christian Eriksen, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen before the transfer window closes across Europe for his side's inability to match City.

"Sometimes people struggle to realise we arrive here with our circumstances, we cannot fight face-to-face with them," said Pochettino.

"We have a lot of circumstances we have to fix in the last few weeks until the transfer window shuts in Europe."

De Bruyne should have had a hat-trick of assists before half-time as Ilkay Gundogan side-footed wide another inviting low cross, while Hugo Lloris saved from Oleksandr Zinchenko and Bernardo Silva to keep Tottenham in the game.

And that proved vital as Lucas ran straight on the pitch to flick home Lamela's corner with his head.

Spurs did not manage another effort on goal as City laid seige to their goal in search of a winner.

Jesus replaced Aguero, who was embroiled in an argument with Guardiola after leaving the field.

"We have a good relationship. It's the emotion of the game, he's an incredible competitor," insisted Guardiola.

The Argentine striker and his manager had reconciled any differences as they hugged each other in celebration when Jesus coolly slotted into the bottom corner in the 94th minute to seemingly win the game.

But replays showed the ball broke to the Brazilian via the arm of Laporte and City's ecstasy turned to agony again.

Deja vu for Manchester City as VAR saves Spurs again

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was Arsenal's match-winner again as the Gabon forward sealed a 2-1 victory against Burnley to extend his side's perfect start to the Premier League season on Saturday.

Aubameyang had netted the only goal in last weekend's win at Newcastle and he emulated that crucial contribution with another decisive strike at the Emirates Stadium.

Alexandre Lacazette's first goal of the season had given Arsenal the lead before Ashley Barnes equalised for Burnley just before half-time.

It was a encouraging afternoon for Arsenal manager Unai Emery as his widely written-off team continued to bounce back from their dismal end to last season.

Failing to finish in the top four and losing the Europa League final against Chelsea robbed Arsenal of a Champions League place and led to a summer of recriminations as fans vented their frustrations.

But Emery has quietly assembled a more vibrant squad than he had in his troubled first campaign.

With two successive wins to start the season for the first time in 10 years, the early signs are promising for Arsenal ahead of sterner tests against Liverpool and Tottenham in their next two games.

As well as goals for Arsenal's two main strikers, there was a virtuoso performance from on-loan Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos, who had two assists in his first start.

Club record signing Nicolas Pepe impressed after coming off the bench as half-time and although former Chelsea defender David Luiz was hardly rock solid on his debut, Emery's back four did enough to keep Burnley at bay.

Mesut Ozil was again absent from the Gunners squad after the German midfielder was ill earlier this week.

Ozil missed the Newcastle match because of "further security fears" after being involved in a carjacking incident with team-mate Sead Kolasinac in July.

But Ozil's absence wasn't a hinderance against a Burnley team who suffered their eighth successive loss at the Emirates.

Lacazette, back from an ankle injury that meant he was only a substitute at Newcastle, came close to putting Arsenal in front when he met a Sokratis flick with a close-range header that Nick Pope tipped over.

Deft touch

It was only a temporary reprieve for Burnley as Emery's side took the lead from the resulting corner in the 13th minute.

Ceballos's corner reached Lacazette at the near post and he showed impressive strength to hold off Erik Pieters as he turned away from a gaggle of Burnley defenders, his determined effort sending him slipping to the turf but not before he guided his shot through Pope's legs.

Ceballos showed a deft touch and quick feet to escape the attentions of his marker, drawing a huge cheer from the Arsenal fans who are already comparing him to Gunners great Cesc Fabregas.

Reiss Nelson squandered a chance to double Arsenal's lead when he fired too close to Pope, who also denied Matteo Guendouzi after another attack sliced through the Burnley defence.

But Burnley drew level in the 43rd minute when Dwight McNeil's shot deflected to Barnes and he took advantage of Arsenal's sloppy marking to poke home from close range for his third goal of the season.

Nelson had a goal ruled out for offside against Nacho Monreal moments later in what proved to be the young winger's last contribution before he was replaced by Pepe at half-time.

Pope was in fine form and he pushed away Ceballos's shot from the edge of the area, but even the Burnley keeper couldn't stem the tide forever.

In the 64th minute, Ceballos tenaciously won possession and found Aubameyang, who accelerated towards the Burnley area.

With Burnley's defenders backing off, Aubameyang had time and space to drill a blistering strike past Pope, sparking a fevered touchline celebration from Emery as Arsenal's early-season momentum gathered pace.

The 41-year-old, Chelsea's record goal-scorer, is certain to get a hero's welcome from his adoring fans despite the frustrating start to the season.

A crushing 4-0 defeat at Manchester United in Chelsea's opening game of the&nbsp;PremierLeague&nbsp;campaign was followed by Wednesday's penalty shoot-out loss to Liverpool in the European Super Cup in Istanbul.

Both performances featured moments of promise for Chelsea, but Lampard knows he will be judged on results, making it essential to avoid a third consecutive defeat when Leicester visit west London.

"I'm proud to manage this club. I've been back a few times and had great support," Lampard said.

'Proud' Lampard eyes first Chelsea win in home debut

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard was left disgusted by racist abuse of striker Tammy Abraham online after the UEFA Super Cup final defeat to Liverpool midweek and called on social networks Friday to do more to prevent the publication of offensive content.

Abraham saw his penalty saved by Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian on Wednesday as the European champions won a shootout 5-4 after a 2-2 draw in Istanbul.

"I am particularly disgusted by a so-called Chelsea fan," said Lampard.&nbsp;

"Tammy Abraham asked me to take the fifth penalty because he wanted to take it, wanted to stand up, be brave when the world is watching.

"Within hours somebody sitting behind a keyboard or a phone has said the most disgusting things possible.

"I don't know how these platforms are allowed, it's too easy to be done, something needs to be done as well as people obviously changing their mindsets completely.

"I'm so angry for Tammy, angry for the club because that is not what the club is about. The club does a lot of work against discrimination at all levels and it is a setback when these things happen."

Abraham is still to score his first goal for the Chelsea first-team but is expected to get far more chance to shine this season under Lampard after loan spells at Swansea and Aston Villa the past two years.

"I’ve spoken with Tammy and he is a strong character. I love his character. He's a confident boy on the pitch, he wants to do really well for this football club," added Lampard.&nbsp;

"He has an opportunity to do that this year. He's a great young man. He's experienced something that's not right and it will be a test of that character that he shouldn't need but he's got great character."

Lampard is still seeking his first win since taking charge of the club he won 13 trophies with as a player after losing his opening Premier League match 4-0 at Manchester United last weekend.

Facing a refreshed United and relentless Liverpool was a baptism of fire for the former England international, but he wants the perfect homecoming when Leicester travel to Stamford Bridge for his first home game as Chelsea boss.

"We want to win at home, it's a big game for us in front of our home fans for the first time this season," he said.&nbsp;

He's experienced something that's not right and it will be a test of that character that he shouldn't need but he's got great character." Lampard is still seeking his first win since taking charge of the club he won 13 trophies with as a player after losing his opening Premier League match 4-0 at Manchester United last weekend. Facing a refreshed United and relentless Liverpool was a baptism of fire for the former England international, but he wants the perfect homecoming when Leicester travel to Stamford Bridge for his first home game as Chelsea boss. "We want to win at home, it's a big game for us in front of our home fans for the first time this season," he said.

Alexis Sanchez still has a future at Manchester United, according to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, despite speculation that the Premier League giants are trying to offload the unproductive Chilean.&nbsp;

Reports claim United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has repeatedly attempted to find a buyer for Sanchez, who arrived at Old Trafford 18 months ago with high expectations.&nbsp;

However, Sanchez has scored just five goals in 45 appearances for the club after netting a four-and-a-half year deal reportedly worth nearly £500,000 a week.&nbsp;

Those huge wages are the stumbling block to United finding an interested buyer, even with the transfer window for European clubs open until September 2.&nbsp;

And with Romelu Lukaku having left Manchester this month to join Inter Milan, Solskjaer claims Sanchez will remain at Old Trafford to offer competition to Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial in attack.&nbsp;

"Alexis is such a professional and he comes in working every single day really hard and he wants to be a part of this," said Solskjaer.&nbsp;

"These stories that he's been put in the reserves? Of course he hasn't, he's part of our squad and he is a really good player.&nbsp;

"We don't have the biggest forward line in numbers so Alexis might end up playing a lot more games than you expect because we expect him to come good at this club, he's quality."&nbsp;

Sanchez was injured on international duty for Chile at the Copa America in June, delaying his match fitness for the current season.

Key issue

But Solskjaer is planning to find extra training minutes for the forward who has not completed a full 90 minutes since the opening day of last season more than a year ago.

"He has had three weeks now, so he's a few weeks behind the rest but close to being part of it.

"We've had a behind closed doors game, he's training, a little bit of extras.

"He'll be gradually integrated into more playing time, but we'll have more behind closed doors games and with only one (competitive) game a week it's hard to keep players ticking. We are arranging a few of them."

Fitness is very much a key issue at United this season and was evident in last week’s 4-0 win over Chelsea, with Solskjaer having apparently succeeded in improving the base fitness of the squad that entered last season under Jose Mourinho.

"There is a big shift and difference between the teams,” said Solskjaer.

"Chelsea outran us quite a lot in April, three games ago, now we've outrun them, so that's a good shift for us.

"But it's not just about fitness, fitness is important but a young team you expect loads of energy but we also have quality."

Solskjaer also expects Brazilian midfielder Fred, signed for £52 million last summer, to have a greater impact with United this season despite an underwhelming first year in English football, particularly with the United defence reinforced by the presence of £80 million centre-back Harry Maguire.

"Your team will always play better if you are settled and have a good foundation and not conceding goals,” said Solskjaer.

"The good teams I played in, we had a strong base, a keeper, settled backline and we hope to provide that for our attackers and midfielders and we believe Fred is going to have a big season as well."

Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian faces a late fitness test to see if he can face Southampton on Saturday after being injured by a pitch invader during celebrations of Wednesday's UEFA Super Cup win over Chelsea.

The Spaniard, who only joined the European champions on August 5, capped his full debut in style by saving Tammy Abraham's penalty to win Liverpool a shootout 5-4 following a 2-2 draw in Istanbul.

However, Adrian's ankle was injured when a fan ran on the pitch to join in the shootout celebrations and went careering into a huddle of Liverpool players when he slipped on the pitch.

"I really don’t understand it why, in the world of social media where you are all on it, when we were all together a supporter jumped over something, was chased by some security guys, slipped and kicked (Adrian’s) ankle. Crazy," said Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

"Yesterday it was swollen. Today I spoke to him and he said it is better, much better than yesterday, but we have to see.

“He could not have played directly after we landed in Liverpool, but I saw him now, he is ok and it looks better, but the decision will be made tomorrow –- there is no chance to make it early."

Liverpool are already without normal number one Alisson Becker due to a calf injury picked up in the Premier League season opener against Norwich and could have to cope without the Brazilian for up to two months.

Should Adrian not be fit, 35-year-old Andy Lonergan, who was released by Middlesbrough last season and only signed a short-term contract with Liverpool this week in the wake of Alisson's injury, could start at St. Mary's.

Major takeaways from opening weekend of English Premier League

After a close season in which he said he wanted to leave the club but ended up staying at Old Trafford, all eyes were on Paul Pogba as Manchester United began their Premier League campaign on Sunday.

Yet following a 4-0 home win over Chelsea, in which the French midfielder set up the third and fourth goals, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was full of praise for the former Juventus star.

Pogba played in a three-man midfield operating in a relatively deep role where he was penned back by Chelsea in the first half and struggled at times with his passing.

But after the break, Pogba showed his quality with a superb through ball to Marcus Rashford to score the third and then led a counter-attack himself to set up Dan James for the fourth.

"He's a top, top lad and such a pro and loves playing football and when he gets onto that pitch or behind closed doors, he grows more here (at Old Trafford), he's a World Cup winner," said Solskjaer.

"He's come so far in his career and there's no point letting yourself down. He lost it a couple of times but that doesn't matter. Get on the ball and play," he said.

The Norwegian said that he had asked Pogba, rumoured to be heading to Real Madrid or Juventus during the close season, to play a clear defensive role alongside Scott McTominay and Andreas Pereira.

"Paul can do many many many jobs, he can do an attacking midfield job and today he's more of a link player and when you've got (Victor) Lindelof, (Harry) Maguire and David (de Gea) at the back, they can feed Paul the ball, so he'll get it in good positions.

"Paul can do everything a midfielder can. Today, he was asked to play that sitting role and in the first half I thought Chelsea pegged us too much back so he had to do loads of running.

"But we're fit and he's fit and that is a fantastic pass for the third goal and the run for the fourth, I just wanted him to go all the way," added Solskjaer.

Though pleased with the performances of new signings Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Dan James, Solskjaer still accepted his team remained far from the level he wants them to reach.

"This is a work in process, the boys have been excellent since July 1 and have been fit enough to implement what we wanted to," he said.

"This is just the start. The more we get to play with each other and show we're a team, we'll improve."

Solskjaer praises Paul Pogba after opening Manchester United triumph

Champions Manchester City delivered an emphatic statement of intent with a 5-0 thrashing of West Ham United as they began their bid for a hat-trick of Premier League title on Saturday.

Raheem Sterling's hat-trick fired City to a crushing victory as they more than matched title rivals Liverpool's 4-1 hammering of Norwich City on Friday.

Tottenham Hotspur, the only side to keep pace with City and Liverpool last season before falling away and finishing a distant fourth, began their campaign with a 3-1 home victory over Aston Villa -- Harry Kane scoring two late goals.

There were also impressive wins for Burnley and Brighton &amp; Hove Albion on the opening Saturday of the season while Sheffield United marked their return to the Premier League by picking up a point at Bournemouth.

Champions League winners Liverpool, who finished one point behind City in an epic title race last season, lit the touchpaper at Anfield but Pep Guardiola's City, as they seemingly always manage to do, stole the limelight.

Brazilian Gabriel Jesus, preferred to Sergio Aguero in attack, opened the scoring in the 25th minute and Sterling made it 2-0 six minutes after the interval with a cool finish after being put through by Kevin De Bruyne.

Jesus became the first player to have a goal disallowed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the Premier League when, in the 53rd minute, he finished off Sterling's pass following a fine move. However, the VAR adjudged Sterling had been offside.

VAR, making its Premier League debut this season, was used again to review and validate Sterling's second and the video staff were busy again in the 84th minute when Aguero's soft penalty was saved but VAR ruled that Declan Rice was encroaching into the box and referee Mike Dean ordered a re-take.

The Argentine scored before Sterling completed his hat-trick in stoppage time -- the first player to do so on the opening weekend of the Premier League since Didier Drogba in 2010.

City have now won 15 Premier League games in a row.

"I cannot deny it, I'm delighted to win 5-0 away from home in the first game," said Guardiola, who felt his side had been sloppy in the first half at the London Stadium.

"The rhythm was not there but that's normal for the first game. In the second half we were better, we were more calm, we played extra passes. After we went 3-0 up the game was over."

Home start

Tottenham were playing at home on the opening weekend for the first time in eight seasons but Villa, back in the top flight after a three-season absence, led through John McGinn's ninth-minute strike and hung on grimly.

Debutant Tanguy Ndombele, Tottenham's record signing, struck a 73rd minute equalise though and Kane punished a tiring Villa side with two clinical strikes.

That condemned Villa captain Jack Grealish to his 19th Premier League defeat in a row, the longest losing run of any player in the competition's history.

Brighton made an excellent start under new boss Graham Potter with a surprise 3-0 win at Watford -- thanks to an own goal from Abdoulaye Doucoure and second-half strikes by forwards Florin Andone and Neal Maupay.

Ashley Barnes struck twice as Sean Dyche's Burnley beat Southampton 3-0 in a meeting of two of last season's strugglers at a wet and windswept Turf Moor.

Icelandic winger Johann Berg Gudmundsson added the third on a disappointing day for Ralph Hasenhuttl's side.

Local boy Billy Sharp came off the bench for Sheffield United to earn a share of the spoils in their first Premier League game since 2007 as they drew 1-1 t Bournemouth. Defender Chris Mepham had put the Cherries ahead in the 62nd minute.

Everton's investments have raised hopes of a top-six challenge but they had to settle for a point at Crystal Palace after missing a series of chances in a 0-0 draw.

Five-star City make statement, Kane seals late Spurs win

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang fired Arsenal to a 1-0 win at Newcastle in their Premier League opener on Sunday, providing hope of an improved run this season for Unai Emery's side.

The Gunners finished last season in turmoil after blowing their bid for a top-four place with a disastrous spell in the final weeks.

Adding to Emery's woes, Arsenal were crushed by Chelsea in the Europa League final to shatter their dreams of Champions League qualification.

But Arsenal have enjoyed a profitable close-season, with a host of new signings raising morale around the Emirates Stadium.

And Aubameyang gave Arsenal fans renewed belief they can get back in the top four this term with a typically predatory second-half finish to give the north Londoners a winning start.

Arsenal had a wretched away record last season, keeping just one clean sheet on their travels, so taking three points without conceding was the perfect way to turn over a new leaf.

Their often-criticised defence held firm, with centre-backs Calum Chambers and Sokratis keeping Newcastle at bay.

Aubameyang's strike ruined Newcastle manager Steve Bruce's first match in charge of the club he supported as a boy.

Bruce left second-tier Sheffield Wednesday to join Newcastle in the close-season following the departure of fan favourite Rafael Benitez, who had grown tired of a lack of backing from controversial owner Mike Ashley.

Bruce's appointment was hardly greeted with widespread joy on Tyneside and the season started with Newcastle fans staging a protest against Ashley in the streets and then boycotting the match in large enough numbers to leave numerous empty seats around St James' Park.

Emery's decision to leave new signings David Luiz, Dani Ceballos and Nicolas Pepe on the bench was rewarded by a determined, if only sporadically cohesive, display from his team.

There were starts for 19-year-old academy graduates Reiss Nelson and Joe Willock, but Mesut Ozil and Sead Kolasinac were absent after two men were arrested following a fresh incident after the pair were the victims of an attempted car-jacking in July.

Cool finish

Joelinton made his first Newcastle start after his club-record £40 million switch from Hoffenheim and the Brazilian striker needed to impress to lift the gloomy mood on a rainy day in the north-east.

He had his first sights of goal when he flicked a header just wide from Matt Ritchie's cross and then blasted straight at Arsenal keeper Bernd Leno.

Jonjo Shelvey went even closer for Newcastle as the midfielder hit the outside of a post with a stinging strike.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan squandered a golden chance to give Arsenal the lead, the unmarked midfielder firing wildly over the bar from 10 yards.

After a quiet start, Arsenal star Aubameyang, the joint top-scorer in the Premier League last season, sprang to life when he tested Martin Dubravka with a powerful strike after superbly controlling Mkhitaryan's long pass.

It was a warning that Newcastle failed to heed as Aubameyang put Arsenal ahead in the 58th minute.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles was the provider, making a timely interception of Paul Dummett's under-hit pass to Jetro Willems and surging away from inside his own half.

Unfurling a pin-point pass that curled over the back-tracking Newcastle defence, Maitland-Niles found Aubameyang in space and the Gabon striker took a touch before clipping his cool finish past Dubravka.

Ivory Coast winger Pepe, Arsenal's £72 million club-record signing, and Spanish midfielder Ceballos, on loan from Real Madrid, came off the bench for the last 20 minutes.

The new boys didn't make much of an impact as Arsenal's much-maligned defence took the plaudits.

Jose Mourinho claims <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-citys-pep-guardiola-backs-special-sterling-to-shine-as-striker-242288">Manchester City</a> are so strong the Premier League champions could even win the title with their second-string side.

Mourinho, working as a pundit for Sky Sports on Sunday, was asked who can win the title this season and the former Manchester United boss was quick to highlight City's strength in depth.

City kicked off their bid for a third successive title by thrashing West Ham 5-0 on Saturday thanks to Raheem Sterling's hat-trick and strikes from Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero.

Against West Ham, Pep Guardiola's side had a substitutes bench including new signing Joao Cancelo, Bernardo Silva, Ilkay Gundogan and Aguero, who scored a penalty after his second-half introduction.

"Man City, Tottenham, Liverpool and the Man City 'B' team," Mourinho said of the potential title challengers.

"When I looked at the bench yesterday, the players not involved, I think even the 'B' team could fight for the title."

Former Chelsea and Real Madrid manager Mourinho also admitted he did not believe United could win the title last season before he was sacked in December.

"When I said that second position the previous season (2017-18) was one of my biggest achievements in football I was not having fun with the words," he said.&nbsp;

"I just was just telling you what I was feeling.

"I didn't feel last season we did enough in the transfer window to allow us to compete for the first position because though we finished second the distance to first was very considerable.

"So I don't feel this season they can win but I hope they feel they can because that will be an important motivational push for them."

"When I said that second position the previous season (2017-18) was one of my biggest achievements in football I was not having fun with the words," he said. "I just was just telling you what I was feeling. "I didn't feel last season we did enough in the transfer window to allow us to compete for the first position because though we finished second the distance to first was very considerable. "So I don't feel this season they can win but I hope they feel they can because that will be an important motivational push for them."

Manchester City's reserves could win title says Jose Mourinho

Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling's improving physicality and finesse can help him excel as a central striker when he is deployed in the role, manager Pep Guardiola has said.

England international Sterling scored a superb hat-trick as the champions kicked off their Premier League defence with a convincing <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/five-star-city-make-statement-kane-seals-late-spurs-win-242134">5-0 victory at West Ham United</a>.

Guardiola said that Sterling, who began the contest on the left of their attacking trident after record goalscorer Sergio Aguero dropped to the bench, had the versatility to perform in any position across the forward line.

"Since we started this season in China and the Community Shield he's scored one goal minimum every game," Spaniard Guardiola told City's website.

"On the first day he played as a striker and for me striker will be an incredible position for him. He can play in three positions up front.

"They're incredibly talented players but they need the group.... When the team takes a step forward he plays better. But I know the special quality of the player, the consistent physicality and the finishing."

Sterling, who was voted Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers' Association last season, scored 25 goals in all competitions across the campaign.

Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian's Premier League experience can help him seamlessly slot into their starting lineup if first choice Alisson is out for a long spell with a calf injury, defender Virgil van Dijk has said.

Brazil goalkeeper Alisson suffered the injury after slipping in the 36th minute of their 4-1 opening day victory over Norwich City and was replaced by Spaniard Adrian, who joined the club as a free agent four days earlier.

With Alisson ruled out of Wednesday's UEFA Super Cup clash with Chelsea and facing a longer layoff, Van Dijk believes that former West Ham shot-stopper Adrian has the quality to step up and perform for Jurgen Klopp's team.

"I think he's at that kind of age, that stage of his life and career that he can come in and slot in to the team pretty easy," Van Dijk told the British media.

Adrian, 32, made only five appearances in cup competitions for West Ham last season but has played 125 top-flight matches for the London club before joining Liverpool following the departure of Simon Mignolet.

"He's been through so many things in the Premier League... I'm sure he'll be fine if he does his normal thing," Dutchman Van Dijk added.

"He (Alisson) is very important for us, but I've no idea what the actual damage is. We'll see over the next days what the outcome is going to be.

"We have to deal with it and we're going to deal with it."

Two men will appear in court next month charged with a public order offence, police confirmed Sunday, in connection with two Arsenal footballers previously targeted in an attack.

Arsenal said Mesut&nbsp;Ozil&nbsp;and Sead Kolasinac would not play in Sunday's opening English Premier League fixture at Newcastle due to "further security incidents".

Former Germany midfielder&nbsp;Ozil&nbsp;and the Bosnia defender were last month&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/watch-arsenals-sead-kolasinac-fights-back-masked-robbers-in-north-london-238570">targeted by masked and armed attackers</a> who chased their car through London.

London's Metropolitan Police said two men had been arrested in an incident in the north of the city three days ago.

"Two men have been charged under Section 4a of the Public Order Act following an incident in Camden on Thursday," the police said in a statement.

"Ferhat Ercan, 27, and Salaman Ekinci, 27, were charged on August 9 following the incident and are due to appear at Highbury Corner Magistrates Court on September 6."

Reports suggested the men were arrested after becoming involved in an altercation with security staff outside&nbsp;Ozil's house.

Section 4a of the Public Order Act&nbsp;refers to offences of intentional harassment, alarm or distress, through threatening, abusive or insulting words, behaviour or displays.

Arsenal said on Friday that&nbsp;Ozil&nbsp;and Kolasinac would not be in the squad travelling to Newcastle "following further security incidents which are being investigated by the police.

"The welfare of our players and their families is always a top priority and we have taken this decision following discussion with the players and their representatives.

"We are liaising with the police and are providing the players and their families with ongoing support.

"We look forward to welcoming the players back to the squad as soon as possible."

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/ole-gunnar-solskjaer-confident-manchester-united-squad-can-win-over-doubters-241847">Ole Gunnar Solskjaer</a> said Saturday that he is banking on Harry Maguire having a transformative effect at Manchester United after making the England international the world's most expensive defender.

The £80 million ($97 million) United splashed out to take Maguire from Leicester was £5 million more than Liverpool spent in January 2018 to bag Virgil van Dijk, a signing that helped transform the fortunes of United's fierce rivals and win them the Champions League.

United meanwhile conceded 54 goals in 38 games last season, their worst defensive campaign for 40 years as they finished sixth, and Solskjaer believes Maguire will be the one that makes the difference as United open their Premier League campaign at home to Chelsea on Sunday.

"I'm delighted we have got Harry in because he's going to be great for this club," said Solskjaer.

"He was always my number one target. I more or less made my mind up when we played Leicester that if it was possible to get him, we should at least try.

"I don’t want to compare us to Liverpool or Harry to van Dijk, but I know Harry is going to have a massive impact on us."

Capped 20 times by England, Maguire made his name with a starring role in the run to the semi-finals at last year's World Cup in Russia.

He was linked with United immediately after that, but following another season at Leicester in which he played 31 times in the Premier League and scored three goals, he has now made his big move.

"Harry is so composed on the ball and he gives the team another dimension," Solskjaer enthused.

"He has already shown what a presence he will be and what an impact he will have in the squad.

"Harry is a leader, an established international, a goal threat and a very, very good defender." &nbsp;&nbsp;

Maguire is the headline arrival this summer, with the two other signings, Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace and Daniel James from Championship side Swansea, both only 21 as Solskjaer gives youth a chance in his new-look squad.

The Norwegian has also said that 17-year-old Academy product Mason Greenwood will have an opportunity in attack following Romelu Lukaku's departure for Inter Milan, with no replacement for the Belgian brought in.

It is a gamble from the United manager and board with fans voicing their anger at the club's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward at the end of Thursday's transfer deadline, but Solskjaer wants to build for the long term.

"I am just staying true to what I believe in. I believe in this way of managing a football club," he said.

"If we don’t make these decisions now, they will have to be done in 12 months or 18 months or 24 months because at some point these kids will have to be a part of Man Utd."

Tottenham led the way on a busy final day of the Premier League transfer window with deals for Giovani Lo Celso and Ryan Sessegnon, while Arsenal strengthened their defence with the signings of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/arsenal-agree-deal-for-tierney-closing-in-on-luiz-241483">Kieran Tierney and David Luiz</a>.

Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku's prolonged transfer to Inter Milan was also completed after the clubs reportedly agreed on a deal that could rise to €80 million (£74 million, $90 million).

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has been under pressure from manager Mauricio Pochettino to build on the progress made on and off the field as Tottenham moved into a new 62,000-capacity stadium and reached the Champions League final last season.

After the club-record signing of French international midfielder Tanguy Ndombele, the signings of Lo Celso and Sessegnon add some much-needed depth to a Spurs squad that had previously gone 18 months without a new recruit.

Argentine international midfielder Lo Celso has joined on a season-long loan deal from Real Betis with an option to make the transfer permanent next summer.

England under-21 international Sessegnon joins from Fulham in a £25 million deal that could rise to £30 million in performance-related add-ons on a six-year contract.

"I think it is the right time for me to come here," said Sessegnon. "It's a young, eager, exciting team for me to join and I think this team is not far off winning big things in the future."

However, a sensational swoop for Juventus' Paulo Dybala broke down, leaving Spurs short on support for Harry Kane up front.

Arsenal bolster defence

Arsenal were badly in need of defensive recruits to shore up a backline that conceded 51 Premier League goals last season to miss out on Champions League football for a third straight year.

The Londoners' long-standing interest in Tierney was finally given the green light when the payment structure of a £25-million move was agreed with Celtic.

"I've lived my dream and I've loved every single minute of it," said Tierney of leaving his boyhood club. "Now I just feel was the right time to take a step on. I feel this is a great opportunity for me."

Arsenal then secured some much-needed cover at centre-back in an £8 million deal for Luiz.

"David has huge experience and I look forward to working with him again. He is a well known player and adds to our defensive strength," said Arsenal boss Unai Emery.

The Gunners clawed back that deadline day spend after agreeing a £35 million deal to sell Nigerian international striker Alex&nbsp;Iwobi&nbsp;to Everton.

Iwobi&nbsp;is Everton's seventh signing of the summer following goalkeeper Jonas Lossl, right-back Djibril Sidibe, midfielders Andre Gomes, Fabian Delph and Jean-Philippe Gbamin, and striker Moise Kean.

Manchester City and Liverpool are expected to battle for the Premier League title once more, but were not busy on deadline day.

City brought in veteran goalkeeper Scott Carson on loan from Derby as back-up to Ederson and Claudio Bravo after the signings of Rodri, Angelino and Joao Cancelo earlier in the window.

Liverpool made just three low-key additions in teenagers Sepp van den Berg and Harvey Elliott and back-up goalkeeper Adrian over the course of the summer.

Outside the top six, Watford broke their transfer record to bring in Senegal international Ismaila Sarr for a reported €35 million from Rennes.

Wilfried Zaha's hopes of a move from Crystal Palace were snubbed as Everton could not match the London club's asking price.

"It's been well documented that he wanted to leave, but it has not worked out for him," admitted Palace manager Roy Hodgson.

Brighton bolstered their midfield options with the loan signing of Australian international Aaron Mooy.

Former England international Andy Carroll returned to Newcastle on a free transfer from West Ham, while the Magpies also secured Swedish defender Emil Krafth.

Leicester used some of the £80 million they received from Manchester United for Harry Maguire on Sampdoria midfielder Dennis Praet for €20 million.

And Burnley secured the services of Danny Drinkwater on loan from Chelsea until January.

Tottenham, Arsenal splash cash on Premier League deadline day

Manchester United can ease supporters' doubts after a relatively quiet transfer window by producing the attractive football that has delighted them in the past, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said on Friday.&nbsp;

A pall of gloom hangs over Old Trafford with many fans disillusioned with United's transfer business in the close season even though the club signed defenders Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and winger Daniel James.

However, United lost striker Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan and midfielder Ander Herrera to Paris St Germain without recruiting replacements but Solskjaer said the club would only sign players if they improved the squad.

"There are always going to be fans out there wanting to sign players. The way we can clear doubts is by playing football, showing what the team want to be and the style of football we want to play," Solskjaer told reporters ahead of Sunday's Premier League match at home to Chelsea.

"When our fans see that intention they have always been supporting the team. Within the team and the club we are feeling very confident and we don't feel that negativity.

"There is money available when the right players are available. It's not about a quick fix, it is about a longer re-build. It's not time to change that attitude when you haven't got the correct answers from the players you wanted."

Lukaku, who did not take part in United's pre-season matches due to injury, was sold to Inter for a reported fee of €80 million ($89.60 million) on deadline day and Solskjaer said the transfer was a win-win situation for all parties concerned.&nbsp;

"It was time for Lukaku to go. We got a good deal and he is happy so both parties ended that deal as it should be," Solskjaer added.

"He was injured for a while in pre-season and he didn't participate. I just hope that he gets a good start at Inter Milan."

Solskjaer expects Alexis Sanchez to fill the void after Lukaku's exit after a torrid season where the 30-year-old forward scored only two goals in all competitions.

However, the Chilean may not feature against Chelsea after returning late following his participation in Copa America which ended last month.

"Alexis has come in and trained well... he's four or five weeks behind the boys and he has not played apart from the one behind closed doors here, I think he'll see this as an opportunity to make his mark," Solskjaer said.

Defenders Eric Bailly and Timothy Fosu-Mensah are unavailable due to injuries, Solskjaer added, but Paul Pogba and new signing Maguire are fit to start.

Manchester United can ease supporters' doubts after a relatively quiet transfer window by producing the attractive football that has delighted them in the past, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said on Friday. It's not time to change that attitude when you haven't got the correct answers from the players you wanted." Lukaku, who did not take part in United's pre-season matches due to injury, was sold to Inter for a reported fee of €80 million ($89.60 million) on deadline day and Solskjaer said the transfer was a win-win situation for all parties concerned. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confident Manchester United squad can win over doubters

It was time for Romelu Lukaku to leave Manchester United according to manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Norwegian told a news conference Friday that both the club and player were happy with Lukaku's move to Inter Milan to go ahead and that he thinks United got a 'good deal'. Lukaku, who scored 28 Premier League goals over two seasons for United, signed with the Italian side, now managed by former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, in a deal reported by local media at 80 million euros ($89.61 million).

Real Madrid will rival Barcelona in the race to sign Paris Saint-Germain striker <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/prosecutors-to-drop-rape-charges-against-neymar-241655">Neymar</a> this summer, according to reports in the Spanish press on Friday.&nbsp;

Madrid have shifted focus to Neymar after the close of the English Premier League's transfer window on Thursday ended their hopes of signing Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba.

According to Marca, Neymar has "returned to the scene" with the club "believing for some time that the team is lacking a big star up front".&nbsp;

Sports newspaper AS claims the Brazilian has been offered to Madrid by PSG, who are open to selling if they can either recoup the 222 million euros they spent on him in 2017 or receive half that amount, with players included in the deal.&nbsp;

It means La Liga's two greatest rivals are set to go head-to-head in the battle to sign Neymar before the Spanish transfer window closes on September 2.&nbsp;

Barcelona newspaper Mundo Deportivo says the 27-year-old will wait until August 20 for Barcelona to make a decisive move, after which "PSG's number 10 does not rule out any option in order to leave the French champions, where it is clear he does not want to stay any longer."&nbsp;

But Mundo adds that "it is clear Neymar wants to play for Barcelona" while Diario Sport agrees, writing that "the winning card Barca continues to hold is the will of the striker to runite with players like Leo Messi and Luis Suarez. With them he has a great understanding on the pitch and also a strong friendship off it."&nbsp;

Marca believes Madrid also have factors in their favour. "Neymar's priority is not to go to Barcelona. His priority is to leave the PSG," wrote Marca, also citing their "magnificent relationship" with PSG, "quite the opposite" of how the French club view Barcelona.&nbsp;

Luka Modric is mentioned as a possible makeweight while Philippe Coutinho, who reportedly rejected an offer from Tottenham this week, could be included in an offer from Barcelona.&nbsp;

Sport admits whichever team signs Neymar will "inflict a blow on their rivals by snatching a star player from the other's grasp".&nbsp;

"From now on, it will be Neymar that decides," Sport added. "Barcelona want the player to go public but he understands such a move would be risky. If Barca and PSG do not reach an agreement he would be stuck in the French capital for a third year."&nbsp;

Real Madrid go head-to-head with Barcelona for Neymar: Reports

Two workers from a British CCTV firm pleaded guilty on Friday to accessing graphic mortuary footage, later circulated on social media, of the body of the late Argentine football&nbsp;player Emiliano Sala, who was killed in a plane crash in January.

Sala, 28, was flying from his previous club Nantes in western France to Wales to join Cardiff City when the Piper Malibu aircraft disappeared over the English Channel.

The wreckage was finally located following a privately funded search and his body was recovered three days later.

Police launched an investigation in February after officers became aware that a graphic image showing the post-mortem of Sala was appearing on social media.

They raided the officers of the closed circuit TV firm which held the out-of-hours contract to monitor the mortuary and discovered that the company's director, Sherry Bray and another member of staff Christopher Ashford, had illegally accessed the footage.

Bray had taken photographs of the footage on her mobile phone and then sent the pictures to another person on Facebook Messenger, police said. Evidence showed Bray had also taken pictures of another body in the mortuary.

"It has been the two families who have been at the forefront of our minds throughout the investigation; they have been significantly impacted at what was already a difficult and traumatic time for them," said Detective Inspector Gemma Vinton.

"The actions of Bray and Ashford caused additional unnecessary distress and heartache."

Bray, 48, pleaded guilty at Swindon Crown Court to three counts of computer misuse and perverting the course of justice and Ashford, 62, admitted three counts of computer misuse. They are due to be sentenced on Sept. 20.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/manchester-united-pay-world-record-fee-for-a-defender-to-sign-harry-maguire-240869">Harry Maguire</a> will come under the microscope like never before after his 80 million pounds move to Manchester United made him the world's most expensive defender and Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk says he must focus on his game and tune out the noise if he is to handle the pressure.&nbsp;

Van Dijk preceded Maguire as the most expensive defender in world football when he joined Liverpool for 75 million pounds ($91.19 million) in 2018 before United eclipsed that mark for the former Leicester City centre back on Monday.&nbsp;

Dutch international Van Dijk told British media the price tag was not something Maguire had any influence over but there would be no escaping the attention it would bring.&nbsp;

"The price comes with pressure but it doesn't change too much because you always have&nbsp;pressure at big clubs like Man United," he said.

"It's not easy to completely shut off all the pressure."

Van Dijk has been a transformative presence for Liverpool since joining the Merseyside club from Southampton, helping them win the Champions League last season and take the Premier League title race down to the wire.

He said being able to keep things in perspective had helped him cope with the price tag and the odd wind-up from opponents.

"Quite a lot of things are more important than playing football," the 28-year-old added. "You need to enjoy it but the pressure will always be there.

"Just focus on doing what you love to do and play your best game. Get your qualities out on the pitch, enjoy your game and don't think about the other things.

"If opponents have a go during the game because you cost that much, what can you do? I'm not listening to them. It does not change anything in my head."

Arsenal captain Laurent Koscielny completed a return to France on Tuesday after agreeing a deal with Ligue 1 club Bordeaux on a reported three-year deal.

The French defender, 33, made clear his desire for a move last month when he refused to travel on Arsenal's pre-season tour of the United States.

His standoff with the club reportedly came after the Gunners rejected&nbsp;his request to be released from the final year of his contract.

"The club is delighted to be able to count on a player with such experience at the highest level," Bordeaux said in a statement.

Koscielny played 353 games for Arsenal, winning the FA Cup three times, and was named club captain at the start of last season following the retirement of Per Mertesacker.

"We thank Laurent for his contribution to the club and wish him all the best for the future," Arsenal said in a statement.

Young hopefuls at Premier League giants Chelsea were abused for years by a "prolific and manipulative" coach as staff at the club "turned a blind eye", an independent report said Tuesday.

The report, led by lawyer Charles Geekie, found that the club's former chief scout Eddie Heath, who died in 1983, was able to operate "unchallenged", abusing boys aged between 10 and 17 in the 1970s.

Victims recalled that Heath used "sexual innuendo" in the changing room, but made sure "that his most serious sexual assaults took place in private," it added.

Heath's behaviour was an open secret among players and staff.

"The boys all knew it was safety in numbers, you didn't want to be the last in the van, you risked being groped by him or having your bum slapped. He was regarded as 'Nightmare Eddie'," one witness said.

Chelsea said in a statement that "Heath was a dangerous and prolific child abuser" whose conduct was "beyond reprehensible".

"Although the club today is a very different place from the club then... we will not shy away from responsibility for what happened in the past," it added.

Claims for compensation are being assessed by insurers for the former European champions.

'Manipulative risk-taker'

Heath was sacked when England World Cup-winning hero Geoff Hurst took over the club in 1979. But the former striker, now aged 77, denied knowing about Heath's behaviour and turned down requests to be interviewed for the report.

Geekie talked to 23 witnesses who claim that they were targeted by Heath, saying they painted a picture of an "audacious, manipulative risk-taker".

One witness said staff and players "must have known or been suspicious of what he was doing... but turned a blind eye to it."

One former player described how Heath would come into the urinals and watch, while another said he peered over the shower cubicle while he was inside.

Heath would lavish praise on his "favourites", inviting them around to his house to watch football matches, offering out money and sweets and befriending their parents.

Many said they were fearful of telling the authorities and getting Heath into trouble, while others "wanted to impress him" to ensure they kept being picked.

One former player said the abuse had had a "massive impact on me and my family".

Veteran manager Dario Gradi, who worked at Chelsea at the time, also came in for criticism, with the report finding he failed to report Heath despite receiving a complaint that he had indecently assaulted a boy in the showers.

Ex-Chelsea football star Alan Hudson said it was "common knowledge" that Heath was a paedophile.

"It was common knowledge that Eddie Heath was a 'nonce' (slang for paedophile)," Hudson wrote on Facebook when the allegations first surfaced.

Players from other London clubs he worked for, Leyton Orient and Charlton, also came forward about his predatory behaviour.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said he expects this season's Premier League title race to be more open than last season's when his side pipped Liverpool to the line in a two-horse race after an epic tussle.

City beat Liverpool on penalties in Sunday's Community Shield at Wembley -- the traditional curtain-raiser to the season -- after a high-tempo clash ended 1-1.

The two sides look likely to go toe-to-toe again when the season begin at Anfield on Friday with Liverpool' home clash against Norwich City before City open away to West Ham United a day later.

Last season City won the title with 98 points to Liverpool's 97 after Guardiola's side won their last 14 Premier League games. Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Manchester United completed the top six.

Guardiola played down suggestions a similar story would unfold.

"I think at the beginning of the season, all six of these teams are contenders," he said.

"I don't know if it will be like last season, two real contenders, I think United with (expected new signing, Harry) Maguire and the other players, Arsenal too, Chelsea and Tottenham.

"I think there will be many, many contenders this time."

City dominated the first half against Liverpool with Raheem Sterling giving them an early lead.

But Joel Matip levelled late on and Liverpool would have won but for the excellence of City keeper Claudio Bravo who made several fine stops and saved Georginio Wijnaldum's penalty in the shootout which City edged 5-4.

Both teams struggled for intensity at times, Liverpool before the break and City after it and Guardiola suggested the demands on players over the summer were unreasonable, especially with many of his squad being involved in the African Cup of Nations and Copa America tournaments.

"The show must go on and I'm optimistic if they listen to the players," the Spaniard said.

"The NBA has an incredible amount of games but then five months off. Riyad Mahrez had 10 days off.

"People say about the amount of money we earn but it's not normal."

Harry Maguire became the world's most expensive defender on Monday when Manchester United signed him for a reported fee of £80 million ($97 million).

"Manchester United is delighted to confirm the signing of Harry Maguire from Leicester City," the club said in a statement on its website.

"Harry signs on a six-year contract, with the option to extend for a further year."

The England international, 26, was strongly linked with both Manchester clubs over the summer but Leicester held out for their valuation and the fee surpasses the £75 million Liverpool paid Southampton for Virgil Van Dijk in January 2018.

"I am delighted to have signed for this great club," Maguire told United's official website. "I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Leicester and would like to thank everyone at the club, and the fans, for their fantastic support over the past two seasons.

"However, when Manchester United come knocking on your door, it is an incredible opportunity.

"From my conversations with the manager, I am excited about the vision and plans he has for the team. It's clear to see that Ole (Gunnar Solskjaer) is building a team to win trophies. I am now looking forward to meeting my new teammates and getting the season started."

Manchester United pay world-record fee for a defender to sign Harry Maguire

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/pep-guardiola-urges-manchester-city-to-strike-early-blow-against-liverpool-240382">Pep&nbsp;Guardiola</a> has dominated English football in his time at Manchester City, winning five of the six domestic trophies in the last two seasons, and once again is putting Premier League glory at the top of his list of ambitions for the new season.

On Sunday, City tackle Champions League winners Liverpool in the Community Shield at Wembley in the traditional season curtain-raiser.

Liverpool won their sixth European Cup with victory over Tottenham in May, and while Guardiola does want to conquer Europe with City, he prefers the sustained excellence that a successful league campaign brings over the vagaries of the post-Christmas knockout rounds.

The 48-year-old Spaniard has won eight titles in ten seasons as a manager and he is now aiming to repeat the three straight league title wins he had at German giants Bayern Munich with City.

"The Champions League is an important tournament and difficult to win," he said.

"But it's seven games (the knockout stages). I am not going to go to the casino and gamble everything I have in my pocket on seven games. I don't want that.

"I want to be happy for 11 months and the Premier League makes me happy. Every game when we win, I am happy and I go to a restaurant feeling better.

"Why am I going to wait until February for seven games and put everything on black? From my point of view, that is too risky."

Guardiola, whose side were knocked out of the Champions League by Liverpool and Spurs in the past two seasons, said the title meant everything to him. &nbsp;

"To maintain the health and focus of the team, the most important thing is the Premier League," he said.

"It is the standout competition because it is every weekend. In the Champions League, many things can happen in one or two games.

"We will be closer to achieving in Europe when we have more Premier League titles. That is a nice process and the right process to do at Manchester City.

"If I could have one thing this season, right now, it would definitely be the title."

'Players were incredible'

The discussion has been had all summer about whose achievements were greater last season, Liverpool's Champions League glory or City winning the three domestic trophies -- Liverpool pushing City all the way in the Premier League title race -- in England plus the Community Shield.

But it was 3-0 in the Reds' favour in nominations for the best male player for the Best Fifa Football Awards, which were announced last Wednesday.

Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane are on the ten-man shortlist.

It has left Guardiola wondering what City's players must do to receive wider acclaim for their performances.

"I cannot imagine Real Madrid or Barcelona winning four titles in one season and not having a single player there," he said.

"That is impossible. I am not going to say that the ten guys nominated don't deserve it, but I am a bit surprised we had no one because our players were incredible.

"For example I don't think any player made a better season than Bernardo Silva, who also won the Nations League with Portugal."

Guardiola had to acknowledge that success in Europe is the only remedy to resolving the conundrum.&nbsp;

"These awards are normally when you win the Champions League or are in the latter stages," he said.

"The other competitions do not count. So if we win the Champions League, our players will be there."&nbsp;
