On January 5 (Wednesday), there was a huge outrage when Prime Minister Narendra Modi's convoy was stuck on a flyover in Punjab, for close to 20 minutes, due to farmers' protest. As a result, PM Modi returned to the airport in Bathinda following the lapse. Thus, this led to many reactions across the nation.

Indian badminton star Saina Nehwal also reacted to the development before actor Siddharth -- most famously known for his role in Bollywood cult classis Rang De Basanti -- joined in and left a distasteful comment on her Twitter post. Saina had tweeted saying, "No nation can claim itself to be safe if the security of its own PM gets compromised. I condemn, in the strongest words possible, the cowardly attack on PM Modi by anrachists." To this, the actor replied by saying, "Subtle cock champion of the world Thank God we have protectors of India (sic)."

Siddharth later also issued a clarification, defending his tweet by saying:

Despite Siddharth's clarification on his tweets -- which have been deemed as sexist and derogatory -- the National Commission for Women (NCW) has urged the DGP Maharashtra to look into the matter and take action against the actor.

"The Commission condemns such lewd and inappropriate remarks made by actor Siddharth and requires you, to immediately investigate the matter and register FIR under the aforementioned provision of Indian Penal Code, 1860 and Information Technology Act, 2000 along-with other relevant provisions of the law. The Police must take prompt and strict action against such persons using indecent language for women on social media," the Commission said.

The Commission said that Siddharth's comments invited Section 354A of the Indian Penal Code, covering Sexual Harassment and Punishment for Sexual Harassment in addition to Section 67 of The Information Technology Act, 2000 for Punishment for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form.

For the unversed, even Saina reacted to Siddharth's response. "Ya I’m not sure what he meant. I used to like him as an actor but this was not nice. He can express himself with better words but I guess it’s Twitter and you remain noticed with such words and comments. If the security of the PM of India is an issue then I’m not sure what is secure in the country," the star shuttler said while talking to News18.com

On the other hand, Siddharth remains a firm critic of the Indian government and is vocal on various developments taking place in the country.

As the Omicron variant has rapidly reached nearly every corner of the Earth, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 25, announced that the nasal vaccination and the world's first DNA vaccine against COVID-19 will be available for inoculation soon.

"Nasal vaccine and the world's first DNA vaccine against COVID-19 will soon commence in India," Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated in a speech to the country.

PM Modi also reassured Indians that the world's first DNA vaccine against COVID-19 is still being studied and produced.

The Indian government approved emergency use authorisation for Zydus Cadila's DNA vaccine earlier this year, citing initial results from Phase III clinical trials that showed approximately 66 percent efficacy for symptomatic cases.

The world's first DNA vaccine against the COVID-19

The ZyCoV-D – the world's first plasmid DNA vaccine – was produced by Ahmedabad-based vaccine manufacturer Zydus Cadila and got Emergency Use Approval (EUA) from the Drugs Controller General of India in August earlier this year.

The DCGI has given its permission for the vaccination to be given to children aged 12 to 17.

What is a DNA-based vaccine, and how does it work?

In its most basic form, DNA stores the memories of all biological activities, without exception. It also contains hereditary or genetic information about how the body should react in the event of infection.

The DNA-based vaccinations operate by transferring a genetically modified blueprint of viral genes into small DNA molecules for injection into persons being vaccinated, according to the Milken Institute in the United States.

The ZyCoV-D was created by inserting a fragment of virus DNA into the human body, which, once inside, causes the virus to manufacture a crucial component that the immune system can recognise and so encounter.

Painless vaccine delivery

Instead of using regular syringes, the world's first DNA vaccination will be administered using a needle-free applicator called "PharmaJet." The use of a needle-free applicator enables pain-free intradermal vaccine delivery, as well as a significant reduction in any major side effects.

Efficacy rate of the DNA vaccine

In clinical trials, the vaccination was proven to be 67 per cent effective against symptomatic COVID-19.

It demonstrates that DNA vaccinations work and can aid in the control of the pandemic.

At least a dozen DNA vaccines against COVID-19 are currently in clinical trials around the world, with at least as many more in the early phases of development. Vaccines based on DNA are also being developed for a variety of other disorders.

Safety

ZyCoV-D was found to be safe, well tolerated and immunogenic in the Adaptive Phase I/II clinical trials.

According to a statement by India's Ministry of Science & Technology, this vaccine had already exhibited robust immunogenicity and tolerability and safety profile in the adaptive Phase I/II clinical trials carried out earlier.

Both the Phase I/II and Phase III clinical trials have been monitored by an independent Data Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB).

Price

Zydus Cadila has obtained an order from the Government of India to supply one crore doses of ZyCoV-D at a cost of $3.53 each dose, with the needle-free applicator costing $1.24 per dose, excluding GST.

According to the price breakdown, the Centre will be able to purchase a single dose of the vaccine for $5, which includes the cost of the jet applicator and GST, bringing the total cost of the 3-dose shot to $15.

With a visit to the Dubai Expo and the signing of the India-UAE free trade agreement, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in United Arab Emirates (UAE) on January 6.

PM Modi will be visiting the "India Pavillion" at the Dubai Expo. It is a massive four-floor pavilion which showcases India's culture, Yoga, Ayurveda and space programme.

The pavilion was inaugurated by India's trade minister Piyush Goyal on October 1. It has been visited by many foreign leaders including by Cyprus foreign minister and the King of Sweden. The pavilion also has a model of Ram temple and the BAPS Hindu temple that is being built in Abu Dhabi.

The other key focus of the visit will be the signing of the India-UAE free trade agreement. Earlier this month speaking at an event, trade minister Goyal said that the FTA is an "outstanding achievement for India. It will open lot of doors for lot of sectors...it will be the fastest FTA India has ever entered into. A full FTA".

Talks for the FTA was launched in September. December first week saw the third round of the India-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in Delhi. Trade between the two countries has been robust. UAE is the second-largest export destination of India after US with an amount of over $30 billion for the year 2018-19.

For UAE, India was the second-largest trading partner during 2018 with US$ 36 billion (non-oil trade). UAE has committed $100 billion for investment and infrastructure creation in India.

India and UAE have "Comprehensive Strategic Partnership" and have seen increased engagement at every level.

PM Modi had visited the West Asian country in 2015, 2018 and 2019. UAE has conferred the highest civilian award "the Order of Zayed" on the PM. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, (MBZ) Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of UAE Armed Forces had visited India in February 2016. MBZ visited India again in January, 2017 as the chief guest at India’s Republic day celebrations

The country's diaspora forms a deep connect with India. UAE hosts one of the largest populations of Indians outside of India. Indian expatriate community is approximately 3.3 million which is the largest ethnic community in UAE constituting roughly about 30 per cent of the country’s population. Among the Indian states, Kerala is the most represented followed by Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Indians from the northern states also form a significant portion of the UAE's population.

PM Modi will not be going to Kuwait as was being reported earlier. The last high-level visit from India to the country under the current Modi government was by external affairs minister Dr. S. Jaishankar in June. During the visit, EAM called on the Prime Minister of Kuwait and held a meeting with foreign minister of Kuwait. The last prime ministerial visit from India to Kuwait was by PM Indira Gandhi in 1981 and work is on for the visit of PM Modi to the country soon.

The visit of PM Modi to UAE will be his first foreign visit in 2022. More visits are planned next year, including to Denmark, Germany, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and others but the COVID-19 situation globally will weigh on how the plan goes forward.

2021 saw PM going to Bangladesh, US, Italy and United Kingdom for a bilateral visit and summits like Quad, G20 and the climate change summit.

MBZ visited India again in January, 2017 as the chief guest at India’s Republic day celebrations The country's diaspora forms a deep connect with India.

A whole host of countries from West Asia to Europe will be on the list of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's foreign travel in 2022, all of which depends on the COVID-19 situation globally.

Amid the COVID-19 crisis, few VVIP visits have happened. PM Modi visited Bangladesh in March this year, his first visit abroad since November 2019. Since the Dhaka visit, PM has been to Washington for the Quad summit, New York for United Nations General Assembly meet, Italy for G20 summit and UK's Glasgow for the climate summit.

Indian President visits Dhaka later this month, his first visit abroad amid the pandemic.

UAE

It looks clear now that Prime Minister will be travelling to the United Arab Emirates in early January. PM Modi will be visiting the mega India pavilion at Dubai Expo. It will be PM Modi's fourth visit to the country since 2014. He had earlier travelled to the west Asian country which has emerged as a close ally of New Delhi in 2015, 2018 and 2019.

Germany

PM Modi is also expected to travel to Germany for the 6th Indo-German Inter-Governmental Consultations(IGC) that alternates every two years between the two countries.

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel had been to India for the IGC in 2019. The visit of PM Modi to Berlin will provide an occasion to meet the new Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz.

Asked about the visit, German envoy Walter Lindner in response to a WION question earlier this year said, "You have to ask your prime minister because this is the standard because every two years either we come or PM comes to Germany. Merkel was here two ago, so next year if the Covid situation allows your PM will be in Germany. So we hope it happens within the next 6 months, this will be the first official meeting of the two heads of government."

Germany is also the chair of G7 in 2022. India has been regularly invited for the summit since 2019 when France was the host of the summit. Last year saw the then US President Trump talking about inviting India and others for the summit in the country but the summit never happened. This year UK as the host invited India but due to the second wave of the COVID-19 crisis in India PM Modi could not visit.

Denmark

A large part of PM's visits will be to Europe this year. He is expected to travel to Denmark for the second India-Nordic summit. During the visit of Denmark PM Mette Frederiksen in October this year she had invited the Indian PM for the second India-Nordic summit to be convened in Copenhagen in 2022. The first Indo-Nordic summit involving all five Nordic countries - Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark and Iceland took place in April 2018 in Stockholm.

Indonesia

Indonesia's Bali will see leaders of G20 grouping descending for the annual summit of the twenty most powerful economies. Next year's summit is important for India since the presidency will be handed over to New Delhi. Indonesian President Joko Widodo will hand over the presidency to PM Modi during the summit that is expected to take place in October 2022. India will host the summit in 2023 for the first time.

Russia

Russia will be a key stop next year for the annual India-Russia summit. Russian President was in New Delhi in December for the summit that alternates annually between the two countries.

PM Modi last visited Russia's Vladivostok in 2019 for the summit. President Putin's was the only head of state to visit India this year after Denmark PM's visit. New Delhi in pre-Covid times has been a busy capital with many world leaders visiting the country. The last major visit to India was of Myanmar's then president and former US President Trump in February 2020.

Japan

Japan will be the destination for the second Quad in-person summit. The Quad grouping of India, US, Australia and Japan consolidated this year with a virtual summit followed by an in-person summit in September in Washington.

The grouping whose emergence China is not very pleased about has worked on a number of issues from producing Covid vaccines and Quad principles on technology, design, development and governance. The in-person Quad summit in Japan is likely to take place in February according to initial indications.

Sri Lanka

In the neighbourhood, PM could travel to Sri Lanka for the BIMSTEC or Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation.

Sri Lanka is the chair of the group and will host the 5th in-person summit next year. The country was expected to host the summit this year but it did not materialise. On the agenda at the summit will be the approval of the BIMSTEC Charter, BIMSTEC Master Plan for Transport Connectivity & BIMSTEC Convention on Mutual Legal Assistance on criminal matters.

The grouping is also working on the finalisation of the BIMSTEC coastal shipping agreement and the motor vehicles agreement. In 2019, India had invited BIMSTEC heads of government and states for PM Modi's oath-taking ceremony for the second term. After Sri Lanka, Thailand will be the host of the grouping. BIMSTEC group has been high on India's priority given SAARC has largely been defunct.

Rwanda

Rwanda is likely to be the Prime Minister's destination in Africa since the country hosts the Commonwealth summit (or Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting) CHOGM meet. The summit has been postponed twice in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid and new dates have been suggested. PM Modi last participated in the CHOGM summit in the UK in 2018.

ASEAN, SCO & BRICS

Other destination of India's PM includes Cambodia for the ASEAN summit, Uzbekistan for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit and China for BRICS but it depends if the summit happens in-person. The BRICS and ASEAN summit have been taking place virtually for the past two years. The SCO summit this year was in hybrid mode due to the COVID-19 crisis.

Indian PM Modi calls for review on easing international travel plans amid Omicron variant concerns

On the 13th anniversary of the dastardly 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, India summoned a senior diplomat of the Pakistani High Commission and asked Islamabad to ensure expeditious trial in the case.

Around 166 people, including 25 foreigners, died in the attack carried out by 10 Pakistani militants associated with the terror group Lashkar-e-Tayyiba between November 26 and November 29.

In a note verbale handed over to the diplomat, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also asked Pakistan to abide by its commitment to not allow territories under its control for terrorism against India.

“It is a matter of deep anguish that even after 13 years of this heinous terror attack, the families of 166 victims from 15 countries across the globe still await closure, with Pakistan showing little sincerity in bringing the perpetrators to justice," it said in a statement.

The MEA asserted that the terror attack was planned, executed and launched from Pakistan’s territory.

26/11- A day etched in our collective memory The world stands united in remembering the victims and seeking justice.#MumbaiTerrorAttacks#NeverForget pic.twitter.com/T2237WCmb9 — Arindam Bagchi (@MEAIndia) November 26, 2021 × “We once again call on the government of Pakistan to give up double standards and to expeditiously bring the perpetrators of the horrific attack to justice,” it said. “This is not just a matter of Pakistan's accountability to the families of the innocent victims who fell to terrorists, but also an international obligation,” the MEA added. It said India will continue to make every effort to seek justice for the families of the "victims and the martyrs" of the attack. "On the 13th anniversary of the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attacks, the government and people of India somberly remember the victims of this dastardly attack and the valiant security personnel who laid down their lives to protect ours," the MEA said. Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to the victims, saying that India cannot forget the wounds of the Mumbai attack. “I pay homage to all those who died in the Mumbai attack. Many brave police personnel were also martyred in the strike. I also pay homage to them. India cannot forget the wounds of the Mumbai attack.
